Abstract:The phase diagram can guide the comprehensive utilization of salt lake brine, particularly lithium extraction. In this paper, the study on phase equilibria of the quinary system Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O saturated with NaCl·2H2O and its subsystem Li+, Na+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O at 258.15 K were carried out using the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. Based on the experimental data, equilibrium diagrams for stable phases were plotted. For the equilibrium diagram of the quaternary system Li+, Na+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O at 258.15 K, there are two invariant points, five univariant curves, and four crystallization fields. The quinary system Li+, Na+, K+, Mg2+//Cl––H2O saturated with NaCl·2H2O at 258.15 K contains three invariant points, seven univariant curves, and five crystallization fields. Comparing the phase diagram of the system at 258.15 K to that at 298.15 K reveals that, except KCl, all crystallization zones have decreased, and LiCl·MgCl2·7H2O has the smallest crystallization zone compared to the other salts in the systems. This fundamental research could be valuable for promoting comprehensive utilization of the lithium-containing salt lake brine.

Abstract:According to the composition characteristics of lithium, potassium, bromine, and other resources rich in the salt lake brine of the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau, the phase equilibria of the quaternary system LiBr-NaBr-KBr-H2O and its ternary subsystem LiBr-KBr-H2O at 323.15 K are studied by an isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. The solubility of each system in equilibrium solution at the corresponding temperature is measured, and the corresponding phase diagrams are drawn according to the phase equilibrium experimental data. The results show that there is no complex salt or solid solution in the ternary system LiBr-KBr-H2O at 323.15 K. The phase diagram contains one invariant point (E1), two univariate curves (AE1 and BE1), and two equilibrium solid crystallization regions (corresponding to LiBr·H2O and KBr), belonging to the simple cosaturated type. The quaternary system LiBr-NaBr-KBr-H2O also has no formation of complex salt and solid solution. The phase diagram contains two invariant points (F1 and F2), five univariate curves (E1F1, E3F1, F1F2, E2F2, and E4F2), and four equilibrium solid-phase crystallization regions (corresponding to LiBr·H2O, KBr, NaBr·2H2O, and NaBr). At the same time, to further explain the phase equilibrium relationship of each system at different temperatures and the change rule of each component, comparison and discussion are carried out.

Abstract:To achieve efficient separation of alkali metal borate resources from the brines of the salt lake to provide a theoretical basis, this paper adopts the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method to study the solid-liquid phase equilibrium and phase diagram of the ternary system (LiB 5 O 8 + KB 5 O 8 + H 2 O) and (LiB 5 O 8 + NaB 5 O 8 + H 2 O) at 288.15 K. The study grasps the changing law of solubility and physicochemical properties of the system, as well as analyses and identifies the solid phase in stable equilibrium. The results show that the stable phase diagrams of the two ternary systems at 288.15 K are of the simple eutectic type, containing one invariant point, two univariate saturated solubility curves, and two crystalline regions. Among them, the crystalline region of LiB 5 O 8 ·5H 2 O is the smallest, indicating that it is not easy to precipitate from the saturated liquid phase, and the density and refractive index curves of each system show regular changes with the increase of LiB 5 O 8 content.

Abstract:According to the composition characteristics of mineral elements in underground brine in the Sichuan basin of China, the complete phase equilibria and phase diagram of the quinary system LiBr–NaBr–KBr–MgBr2–H2O were studied at 298.15 K. Using the experimentally determined solubilities and equilibrium solids, the spatial stereo phase diagram of the quinary system, the dry base projection phase diagrams of the saturated surfaces of the four salts MgBr2·6H2O, KBr, LiBr·2H2O, and NaBr·2H2O, and the corresponding water content diagrams were plotted, respectively. The experimental results show that at 298.15 K, in addition to the four original components, the anhydrous salt NaBr and the double salt KBr·MgBr2·6H2O are formed. The phase diagram of the quinary system at 298.15 K contains 10 univariate curves, three invariant points, and six equilibrium solid-phase crystallization regions (KBr crystallization region, NaBr crystallization region, NaBr·2H2O crystallization region, MgBr2·6H2O crystallization region, LiBr·2H2O crystallization region, KBr·MgBr2·6H2O crystallization region). When MgBr2·6H2O or KBr is saturated, LiBr has a strong salting-out effect on KBr, NaBr, or MgBr2 and NaBr, while when LiBr·2H2O is saturated, MgBr2 has a salting-out effect on KBr and NaBr. All four saturated projection surfaces have MgBr2·6H2O, and NaBr is generated. These phase equilibrium data can provide a theoretical basis to guide underground brine mining and extract useful components.

Abstract:To fully understand the metallogenic regularity and the geochemical equilibrium rules of brine migration and transformation among potassium, barium and strontium in gas field water, the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method was used to study the phase equilibria of quaternary system KCl + BaCl 2 + SrCl 2 + H 2 O and its two ternary systems BaCl 2 + SrCl 2 + H 2 O and KCl + BaCl 2 + H 2 O at 323 K. The equilibrium liquid phase compositions of each system was measured, the corresponding equilibrium solid phases were identified by chemical analysis and X-ray powder diffraction, and the equilibrium phase diagrams were drawn. No double salts or solid solutions were found in the ternary systems BaCl 2 + SrCl 2 + H 2 O and KCl + BaCl 2 + H 2 O at 323 K and the phase diagrams both contain one invariant point, two isothermal solubility curves and two crystallization regions. The hydrate forms in the quaternary system KCl + BaCl 2 + SrCl 2 + H 2 O at 323 K are the same as those of its subsystems. The quaternary phase diagram contains one invariant point, three isothermal solubility curves and three crystallization regions, where the equilibrium solid phases are KCl, BaCl 2 ·2H 2 O and SCl 2 ·6H 2 O. These results provide basic thermodynamic data for the design of a comprehensive utilization process of potassium, barium and strontium resources in gas field water.

Abstract:Experimental studies on the metastable solubilities and physicochemical properties (density, viscosity, pH. and refractive index) of the aqueous quaternary system (NaCl + MgCl2 + Na2SO4 + MgSO4 + H2O) at 323.15 K were determined with the method of isothermal evaporation. On the basis of experimental data, the metastable phase diagram and the diagram of physicochemical properties versus composition were plotted. There are six invariant points, twelve univariant curves, and seven crystallization zones corresponding to halite, thenardite, vanthoffite (3NaSO(4)center dot MgSO4), astrakanite (NaSO4 center dot MgSO4 center dot 4H(2)O), hexahydrite (MgSO4 center dot 6H(2)O), tetrahydrite (MgSO4 center dot 4H(2)O), and bischofite (MgCl2 center dot 6H(2)O). There is no solid solution except two double salts of vanthoffite and astrakanite which existed in the metastable system. When compared with the stable equilibrium phase diagram at 328.15 K. the crystallized zones of loeweite (6Na(2)SO(4)center dot 7MgSO(4)center dot 15H(2)O) and kieserite (MgSO4 center dot H2O) disappeared; the areas of halite and hexahydrite increased: and the areas of thenardite, astrakanite, and vanthoffite decreased. It is indicated that the metastable phenomena of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate are significant. The physicochemical properties (density, viscosity. pH. and refractive index) in the metastable equilibrium system change regularly with the mass fraction change of the magnesium ion.

Abstract:Solid-liquid phase equilibria and phase diagram of the quaternary system (NH 4 Cl–MgCl 2 –SrCl 2 –H 2 O) is very important for the separation of ammonium, magnesium and strontium salts from the salt lake brines. In this paper, the solid-liquid phase equilibria of the quaternary system (NH 4 Cl–MgCl 2 –SrCl 2 –H 2 O) at 293.15 and 318.15 K were determined with the method of isothermal dissolution equilibrium. Based on the experimental results, the phase diagrams of the system were plotted. In the phase diagrams of the system there are two invariant points, five univariant curves, and four salt crystal regions. The MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O crystallization region occupies the smallest area, demonstrating that magnesium chloride has a strong desalting effect on the other salts. Comparison of isothermal sections of the quaternary system phase diagram at 293.15 and 318.15 K, it was observed that the crystallization zone of NH 4 Cl·MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O and SrCl 2 ·6H 2 O expands with the increasing of temperature, but the crystallization zone of NH 4 Cl shrinks, while the area of crystallization zone of MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O was almost constant. It can be concluded that the temperature has a remarkable impact on phase behavior of this quaternary system.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated the solid–liquid phase equilibria of the quaternary system Na+, Mg2+//CO32–, SO42––H2O and its four ternary subsystems at 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure using the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. The composition of the saturated liquid phase and wet residue composition of a series of samples were determined. A double salt is generated in the MgSO4-Na2SO4-H2O ternary system at 298.15 K, which is different from the one generated at 277.15 K. The composition of the salt was identified as Na2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O by X-ray diffraction combined with Schreinemakers' method. The phase equilibria of other ternary subsystems were also compared and discussed at different temperatures. The quaternary system Na+, Mg2+//CO32–, SO42––H2O at 298.15 K has three invariant points, seven univariant curves, and five crystallization fields, corresponding to MgCO3, MgSO4·7H2O, Na2SO4·MgSO4·4H2O, Na2SO4·10H2O, and Na2CO3·7H2O. The crystallization area of MgCO3 was the largest, indicating that it will crystallize first under the conditions used in our study. This research provides information on the phase diagram of this quaternary system, which has not previously been determined. The fundamental data obtained is important for investigating the separation and crystallization processes of inorganic salts in the treatment of phosphogypsum.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:The solid–liquid phase equilibria of brine systems containing boric acid are the theoretical basis for the development of boric acid from brine resources. The phase equilibria of the systems NaCl–CaCl2–H3BO3–H2O and CaCl2–H3BO3–H2O at 323.15 K were investigated by the isothermal solution method. The phase diagram for the ternary system is composed of one co-saturation point, two univariant solubility curves, and two singe-salt crystallization fields of CaCl2·2H2O and H3BO3. The dry-salt phase diagram for the quaternary system consists of one invariant point, three univariant solubility curves, and three single-salt crystallization fields for NaCl, CaCl2·2H2O, and H3BO3. In the phase diagrams of the quaternary system at 298.15 and 323.15 K, the areas of sodium chloride and calcium chloride salt regions are enlarged, whereas the area of the H3BO3 region is diminished significantly with the increase of temperature. Using the Pitzer model, the lacking Pitzer parameters for H3BO3 were obtained by fitting the solubilities in the CaCl2–H3BO3–H2O system. The calculated solubilities with the Pitzer model were in accord with the experimental data.

Abstract:In order to provide a theoretical basis for the comprehensive utilization of bittern resources, the phase equilibrium data of the ternary NH4Br–(NH4)2SO4–H2O system and quaternary Na2SO4–NaBr–NH4Br–(NH4)2SO4–H2O system at 298.15 and 353.15 K were determined by the isothermal method, and the phase diagrams were depicted. It was found that the phase diagrams of the ternary systems at 298.15 and 323.15 K were similar, with one invariant point, two univariant curves, and three crystallization regions. The phase diagram of the quaternary system at 298.15 K included four invariant points, six crystallization regions, and nine invariant curves. At 323.15 K, the phase diagram of the quaternary system comprised three invariant points, five crystallization regions, and seven invariant curves. According to the Pitzer and HW models, the experimental values of the ternary system at 298.15 K were used to fit the ion interaction parameter ψNH4–SO4–Br by the least-squares method. The solubility of the quaternary system at 298.15 K was calculated using the known Pitzer parameters and interaction parameters, and the calculated values were basically consistent with the experimental values.

Abstract:The solubilities in the ternary system KCl–CsCl–H2O at 348.15 K were studied with the isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. The phase diagram of the system at 348.15 K is composed of one invariant point, two unvariant curves, and two single-salt crystallizations for KCl and CsCl. A comparison of the diagrams of the system KCl–CsCl–H2O from 298.15 to 348.15 K shows that the solid solution forms at 298.15 K and disappears at 323.15 and 348.15 K. Combining Pitzer binary parameters of KCl and CsCl obtained from the literature and solubility data in the system CsCl–H2O, the temperature dependence equations for Pitzer mixing parameters (θK,Cs and φK,Cs,Cl) and dissolution equilibrium constants of CsCl were built on the basis of the Pitzer model. The model for the mixed system provides reasonable mineral solubility from 273.15 to 348.15 K. The assumption of no solid solution existence in the ternary system can be applied in parameter fitting and solubility calculation. The results on the phase diagrams and thermodynamic model of the system KCl–CsCl–H2O can supply basic thermodynamic data and theoretical references for CsCl separation from the brine containing KCl.

Abstract:The phase equilibria of quaternary systems LiCl+KCl+NaCl+H2O and LiCl+KCl+MgCl2+H2O at 308.2 K were investigated by isothermal dissolution equilibrium method. The results reveal that the phase diagram of the quaternary system LiCl+KCl+NaCl+H2O consists of one invariant point, three univariable curves and three equilibrium solid crystallization fields (LiCl·H2O, NaCl and KCl). Two double salts appear in the quaternary system LiCl+KCl+MgCl2+H2O, namely KCl·MgCl2·6H2O and LiCl·MgCl2·7H2O, and the phase diagram is composed of three invariant points, seven univariable curves and five crystallization fields (LiCl·MgCl2·7H2O, MgCl2·6H2O, LiCl·H2O, KCl and KCl·MgCl2·6H2O). Moreover, the solubilities of salts in two quaternary systems are predicted by applying the Pitzer model. The calculated phase diagrams were in good accordance with the experimental phase diagrams. The results clearly show that lithium chloride crystallizes as LiCl·2H2O at low temperatures; however, it is precipitated as LiCl·H2O at 308.2 K. Compared with KCl·MgCl2·6H2O, LiCl·MgCl2·7H2O has a smaller crystallization zone. The phase equilibria in invariant points of quaternary systems LiCl+KCl+NaCl+H2O and LiCl+KCl+MgCl2+H2O at 308.2 K have been explored for the first time.

The result of thermodynamic calculation indicates that the solid-solid reaction for the Mg-B system will occur all in the temperature range from 298 K to 923 K. The results of diffusion experiment show that the solid reaction between Mg and B proceeds through Mg diffusing into B. The DSC research result indicates that the starting temperature of solid-solid reaction, Mg melting and liqiud-solid reaction is 527.12 degrees C, 650.73 degrees C and 660.82 degrees C, respectively. Based on the research results of diffusion and thermodynamic analysis, the reaction model of Mg-B system is proposed.

Abstract:The solubilities of salts, refractive indices, and pH values of the equilibrium liquid phases in the quaternary system LiCl–LiBO2–Li2B4O7–H2O at 323.15 K were investigated by the isothermal dissolution method for the first time. The dry-salt diagram of the quaternary system consisted of one invariant point, three univariant curves and three crystallization fields corresponding to LiCl·H2O, LiBO2·2H2O, and Li2B4O7·3H2O. The solution refractive indices and pH values change regularly with the changing of concentration. Combining the equilibrium constants for different boron species, the distributions of six boron species in the mixed solution in the systems LiCl–LiBO2–H2O, LiBO2–Li2B4O7–H2O, and LiCl–Li2B4O7–LiBO2–H2O were calculated with the total boron concentration and pH values. The main boron species in the mixed solution of the quaternary system are B3O3(OH)4 –, B4O5(OH)4 2–, B(OH)3, and B5O6(OH)4 –. The boron species distributions are mainly affected by the pH values and the concentration of total boron and LiCl in the solution. The results of phase diagram and boron species distribution in the quaternary system can supply foundation data for separating lithium borate from brines.

Abstract:The stable phase equilibria of quaternary systems LiBr-NaBr-MgBr2-H2O and LiBr-KBr-MgBr2-H2O at 298.15 K were studied by both experimental measurement(isothermal solution saturation method) and theoretical prediction(Pitzer model). The solubilities of the saturated solution have been determined experimentally and two stable phase diagrams and relevant water diagrams of the two quaternary systems were obtained. Results show that quaternary system LiBr-NaBr-MgBr2-H2O is hydrate II type as NaBr and NaBr·2H2O coexistence. Its phase diagram consists of only one invariant point, four univariant curves, and five crystallization fields. The quaternary system LiBr-KBr-MgBr2-H2O is a complex type as the double salt KBr·MgBr2·6H2O formed. In addition to this double salt, the three single salts LiBr·2H2O, KBr and MgBr2·6H2O also crystallize. In this paper, the solubilities of phase equilibria in above quaternary systems were also calculated by the Pitzer's electrolyte solution model. All the needed parameters can be obtained from the literature or be fitted by experimental data. On the Basis of the experimental and calculated results, the phase diagram of the quaternary system was plotted for comparison. It shows that the calculation results are consistent with the experimental ones.

Abstract:The solubilities, densities, refractive indices, and pH values in the systems LiBO2–Li2B4O7–H2O and Li2SO4–LiBO2–Li2B4O7–H2O at 288.15 K were studied by the classical dissolution method in this paper. The solid–liquid equilibrium phase diagrams and the physicochemical property diagrams were constructed with the experimental results. The phase diagram of the ternary system is composed of two single-salt crystallizations of LiBO2·8H2O and Li2B4O7·3H2O, two solubility univariant curves, and one invariant point saturated with the above salts. The comparison for the phase diagrams in the ternary system at different temperatures shows that the solubilities of lithium metaborate and lithium tetraborate in this system are in a positive correlation with the temperature. The dry-salt diagram of the quaternary system consists of three single-salt crystallization fields for Li2SO4·H2O, LiBO2·8H2O, and Li2B4O7·3H2O, three univariant solubility curves, and one invariant point. The physicochemical properties in the two systems change regularly as the concentration increases in solution. The calculated densities and refractive indices with empirical equations are in good agreement with the experimental results.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
