Abstract:Present work prepared a series of Eu2O3 and Dy2O3 co-doped aluminoborosilicate glasses with different network modifier addition by melting and annealing method.The emission spectra of these samples had been measured under UV light excitation.A combination of blue,green,yellow and red emission bands ascribed to transitions for Eu2+,Eu3+and Dy3+ions was shown for these glasses.It presented that the relative emission in-tensity could be adj usted with different network modifier oxides,and resulted in the change of luminescence col-or.White light emission could be obtained by appropriate network modifier oxides addition.Interestingly,it should be noted that the coexistence of Eu3+and Eu2+ions in the aluminoborosilicate glasses was observed ac-Cording to emission spectra.The Eu3+→Eu2+reduction degree decreased by substituting Li2O for ZnO,while it increased by substituting CaO for BaO.The change was discussed with the different optical basicity of the com-ponents.
Multiple Doping Structures of the Rare-Earth Atoms in Β-Sialon:Ce Phosphors and Their Effects on Luminescence Properties.

Abstract:The critical doping structures of rare-earth atoms in the promising β-SiAlON phosphors have long been argued owing to the lack of direct evidence. Here, the exact locations and coordination of the Ce rare-earth atoms in the β-SiAlON structure have been examined using an atom-resolved Cs-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope. Three different occupation sites for the Ce atoms have been directly observed: two of them are in the structural channel coordinated with six and nine N(O) atoms, respectively; the other one is the unexpected substitution site for Si(Al). The chemical valences and stabilities of the doping Ce ions at the different occupation sites have been evaluated using density functional calculations. Correlation of the different doping structures with the luminescence properties has been investigated by the aid of cathodoluminescence (CL) microanalysis, which verifies the different contribution of the interstitial trivalent Ce ions to the light emission while no luminescence is observed for the substitutional doping of quadrivalent Ce.
Influence of different additives on the luminescent properties of Sr4Al14O25:Eu, dy phosphor materials

Abstract:The influence of H3BO3, NH4H2PO4 and CaF2 additives on the luminescent properties of Sr4Al14O25:Eu, Dy was studied. The results indicate that the formation of Sr4Al14O25:Eu phase is facilitated with the addition of these additives. The emission spectra show that the main emission peaks of Sr4Al14O25:Eu, Dy doped with the additives intend to blue shift compared to that without additives. In addition, the luminescent properties of Sr4Al14O25:Eu. Dy is improved by the additives, especially H3BO3, which increases the initial brightness from 1756 med·m-2 to 5327 med·m-2 and prolongs the afterglow time.

Abstract:Rare-earth doped CaIn2O4 phosphors have been widely investigated due to their excellent luminescent property, but the site occupation of rare-earth ions in CaIn2O4 is not very clear and needs to be clarified. Using Eu3+ as a fluorescence probe, such a clarification has been made in this work. 1% and 2% Eu3+ doped CaIn2O4 powder samples have been prepared by the sol-gel method. The X-ray diffraction results indicate that the lanthanide doping does not influence the structure of CaIn2O4. Site selective excitation at low temperature disclosed five different luminescent centers marked as A, B, C1, C2 and C3. The spectral analysis revealed that the A and B sites belong to Eu3+ embedded in In3+ sites; the other three are attributed to Eu3+ substitution on Ca2+ sites, which show slight distortion. Energy transfers from the B site to the A and C1 sites were observed in the 2% Eu3+ doped CaIn2O4 sample. The transitions of Eu3+ ions in the Ca2+ sites make the main contribution to the emission spectra excited at room temperature. These results may provide a guide for optimizing rare-earth doped CaIn2O4 phosphors for their application in the solid state lighting field.

Abstract:The effects of different doping concentration of Eu2+ on the properties of Sr2Al6O11-based phosphor were studied. The results indicate that there are two main emission peaks at 403nm and 493nm existing, in the phosphor, while the doping concentration of Eu2+ is below 0.01mol, which are corresponding to various, Sr1 and Sr2 sites in the Sr2Al6O11 matrix. While increasing the doping concentration of Eu2+, the emission peak of 403nm disappears and the peak of 493nm becomes strong simultaneously due to the energy transfer. between the different Eu2+ centers. Decay curves imply that. the phosphor without co-doping Dy3+ has no long afterglow properties. When the doping concentration of Eu2+ is 0.01mol, the long afterglow is the best in three experimental samples with different Eu2+ contents. The luminescent properties will decrease while increasing the doping concentration of Eu2+ due to the concentration quenching.
Preperation and Photoluminescent Properties of Ca2AlSi3O2N5:Sm3+ Phosphor

Abstract:Ca2AlSi3O2N5:Sm3+ phosphor was prepared by a combination of in-situ co-precipitation method with a gas-reduction-nitridation method at 1100 degrees C. Its structure and luminescent properties were investigated with XRD and PL. The emission spectrum of Ca2AlSi3O2N5:Sm3+ shows several pesks at 602 nm ((4)G(5/2) -> H-6(7/2)), and 650 nm ((4)G(5/2) -> H-6(9/2)) under 287 nm excitation. The effect of the doping concentration of Sm3+ activator on the luminescence properties was studied. It is found that the luminescence intensity increases with increasing of Sm3+ doping concentration within limits, and then decreases. The photoluminescence intensity reaches the highest when the Sm3+ doping concentration is 1 mol%.

Abstract:SrHfO3:Ce and SrHfO3:Ce,Al powders were prepared by the solid-state synthesis using the commercial HfO2, SrCO3, CeO2 and α-Al2O3 as the starting materials. All the SrHfO3:Ce and SrHfO3:Ce,Al powders calcined at different temperatures within 1100 °C–1300 °C for 8 h in air exhibited a pure SrHfO3 phase. Meanwhile, the effects of different calcination temperatures and co-doped alumina on the microstructure of SrHfO3:Ce,Al powders were discussed. SrHfO3:Ce and SrHfO3:Ce,Al ceramics were successfully fabricated via the vacuum sintering at 1800 °C for 20 h. The alumina acted as the sintering aid, which promoted the densification and eliminated the intragranular pores of SrHfO3:Ce,Al ceramics. The charge disbalance was effectively compensated by co-doped alumina. SrHfO3:Ce,Al ceramics exhibited a higher light yield of 5700 ph/MeV compared with 4600 ph/MeV obtained in SrHfO3:Ce ceramics. The charge traps in ceramics and their effects on scintillation properties were also investigated by thermoluminescence measurement.

[Synthesis and Fluorescence Properties of Rare Earth Ions Co-Doped CaMoO(4)].

Abstract:In this paper, a series of CaMoO4 phosphor co-doped rare earth ions were prepared with chemistry co-precipitation method. The concentration of Pr(3+)/Tb(3+) and temperature had obvious influence on the luminescent properties. The crystal structures and spectrum characteristics of the samples were identified with X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and fluorescence spectrophotometer (PL). According to XRD analysis, the main diffraction peaks of samples are consistent with the standard card (JCPDS 29-0351) of the diffraction peak data. This showed doped rare earth ions did not change matrix lattice structure. The emission spectrum excited by 275 nm exhibit sharp lines peaking at 488, 560, 621 and 560 nm assigned to the (3)P(0)—(3)H(4), (3)P(0)—(3)H(5)，(1)D(2)—(3)H(4) and (3)P(0)—(3)F(2) transitions of the Pr(3+) ions. The intensity of fluorescence reached the strongest when the concentration of the doping amount was 3%. The optimum calcination temperatures of CaMoO(4)∶0.03Pr(3+) and CaMoO(4)∶0.05Tb(3+) were 800 and 600 ℃. Furthermore, the intensity of excitation spectra and emission spectra are dependent on the concentration of the doping amount. The emission spectra intensities of CaMoO(4)∶Pr(3+) phosphors decrease and CaMoO(4)∶Tb(3+) phosphors firstly increase and then decrease because of concentration quenching effect with increasing Pr(3+) and Tb(3+) concentration. In addition, the luminescence properties of Pr(3+) ion in CaMoO(4)∶0.03Pr(3+), yTb(3+) system could be evidently improved with co-doping of Tb(3+) ions which was due to the efficient energy transfer process from Tb(3+) to Pr(3+) ions.

Abstract:Cerium-doped Ca-alpha-SiAlON phosphors with Can-1.5xSi12-m-nAlm+nOnN16-n:Ce-x (m=2n, 0.8 <= m <= 2.4, and 0.02 <= x <= 0.40) nominal compositions have been synthesized by gas pressure sintering (GPS). The photoluminescence (PL) properties were studied in relation to phase composition, particle morphology, and microstructure. Continuous addition of Ce rare-earth (RE) could enhance the emission intensity of phosphors, which was partially attributed to the formation of increased amount of planar defects where dense doping of Ce ions is achieved. Such enhancement could hold up to x=0.32, above which the emission intensity fell slightly due to the formation of more secondary phases and a surface glassy phase rather than concentration quenching. Finally, possible ways to improve the luminescence properties of Ce-doped alpha-SiAlON phosphors were discussed through tailoring the composition and microstructure. Abstract:SrAl2O4 phosphors co-doped with Eu2+ , Dy3+ , and Nd3+ ions are synthesized through a citric acid assisted sol-gel combustion process. The crystalline phases and crystallinity of the synthesized phosphors are studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. Strong persistent phosphorescence at 882nm is observed as a consequence of irradiation by ultraviolet light at 370nm due to the persistent energy transfer from excited Eu2+ ions to Nd3+ ions. The optimum doping concentration of Nd3+ ions is estimated to be ∼2% , when the concentration of Eu2+ and Dy3+ ions are 1 and 1.5%, respectively, considering the energy transfer efficiency and the near infrared phosphorescence intensity.

Abstract:(Eu2+, Dy3+)-co-doped strontium/calcium aluminate phosphor as one of color-tunable emission materials was synthesized via solid-state reactions at 1300 °C for 3 h. Effect of strontium/calcium ratio on the crystal structure, particle size/morphology as well as photo- and mechano-luminescent properties of the phosphors was investigated by X-ray diffraction, Rietveld method, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and spectrophotometry. The mechano-luminescent properties were measured by two mechanical stress instruments (i.e., impact and compression), respectively. The results reveal that a mixed phase with SrAl2O4 and CaAl2O4 has a monoclinic structure with a space group P21 for SrxCa1-xAl2O4: 0.001Eu2+, 0.001Dy3+ phosphor (x = 0.2–0.8), resulting in the change of crystallographic parameters due to different calcium/strontium ratios. According to the results of photo- and mechano-luminescent characterizations, SrAl2O4: 0.001Eu2+, 0.001Dy3+ phosphor (x = 1.0) has a superior mechano-luminescent property rather than CaAl2O4: 0.001Eu2+, 0.001Dy3+ phosphor (x = 0), although they both have photo-luminescent properties. Furthermore, the CEI diagram indicates that the emission color of the phosphor can be tuned from blue to bluish white and eventually to green, and the mechano-luminescent peak appears and becomes intense as Sr2+ ions substitute for Ca2+ ions in the phosphor gradually. In addition, the photo- and mechano-luminescent mechanisms of phosphor were also discussed.

Abstract:In order to effectively improve the afterglow properties of CaAl2O4:Eu2+,Nd3+ phosphors, a series of Ca0.982–x Al2O4:0.012Eu2+,0.006Nd3+,xGd3+ (x = 0,0.012,0.024,0.036,0.048,0.060 mol) phosphors were prepared by a high-temperature solid-phase approach. Crystalline composition and microstructure were characterized by XRD, TEM, HRTEM, and XPS, luminescence properties were systematically analyzed by fluorescence spectra, afterglow decay curves and TL glow curve. Results show that all of Ca0.982–x Al2O4:0.012Eu2+,0.006Nd3+,xGd3+ phosphors belong to monoclinic CaAl2O4, without other cystalline phase. The blue emission at 442 nm is observed, which is assigned to the 4f65d →4f7 transition of Eu2+ ions. Doping with appropriate amount of Gd3+ ions (x = 0.036mol) significantly improves the afterglow properties of phosphors, but the excessive doping of Gd3+ induces the fluorescent quenching. The doping of moderate Gd3+ changes the traps states, the trap depth varies from 0.598 to 0.644 eV and the trap concentration is also greatly improved, thus significantly improving afterglow performance.

Abstract:Cobalt-doped nanosized magnesium aluminate (Mg1−xCoxAl2O4) samples having different compositions (x = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0) were synthesized by a chemical co-precipitation method. All samples were characterized by means of x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, ultra violet–visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence and diffused reflectance spectroscopy. The results of XRD revealed that the samples were spinel single phase cubic close packed crystalline materials. The lattice constant and x-ray density were found to be affected by the ionic radii of the doped metal cations. Using the Debye–Scherrer formula, the calculated crystalline size was found to be Co2+ ion concentration-dependent and varied between 32 nm and 40 nm. Nano-dimensions and phase of the Mg1−xCoxAl2O4 samples were analyzed and the replacement of Mg2+ ions with Co2+ ions was confirmed by elemental analysis. Three strong absorption bands at 540 nm, 580 nm and 630 nm were observed for the doped samples which are attributed to the three spin-allowed 4T1g (4F) → 4T2g, 4A2g, 4T1g (4P) electronic transitions of Co2+ at tetrahedral lattice sites. Nanophosphors have optical properties different from bulk because of spatial confinement and non-radiative relaxation. Decreases in particle size can increase the surface area and the defects, which can in turn increase the luminescent efficiency to make it very useful for tunable laser operations, persistent phosphorescence, color centers, photoconductivity and luminescence for display technology. MgAl2O4 was doped with Co2+ ions using a co-precipitation method and the optical absorption studies revealed that there is a decrease of band gap due to the increase of Co2+ content. The emission intensity of this phosphor is observed at 449 nm with a sharp peak attributed to the smaller size of the particles and the homogeneity of the powder.

Abstract:Ce3+/Dy3+/Tb3+/Eu3+/Mn2+ and Cr3+ ions co-doped Zn3Al2Ge2O10 phosphor were prepared by a high-temperature solid-state method. X-ray diffraction patterns prove the cubic phase structure of prepared Zn3Al2Ge2O10 phosphor. Emission, excitation spectra and decay curves confirm the tunable luminescence. Different degrees of the decrease of emission FWHM in Zn3Al2Ge2O10:0.02Cr3+,RE (RE = Ce3+, Dy3+, Tb3+, Eu3+) and Zn3Al2Ge2O10:0.02Cr3+,Mn2+ are observed. The reason of variable FWHM is the effect of crystal field splitting and nephelauxetic effect, and the nephelauxetic effect is dominant. Therefore, the emission FWHM decreases with the increasing concentration of Mn2+/Tb3+/Eu3+ in Zn3Al2Ge2O10:0.02Cr3+, and for Zn3Al2Ge2O10:0.02Cr3+,Ce3+ and Zn3Al2Ge2O10:0.02Cr3+,Dy3+, it is a constant. The variation of Zn3Al2Ge2O10:0.02Cr3+,Tb3+ is more obvious than that of Zn3Al2Ge2O10:0.02Cr3+,Eu3+, because Tb3+ ion has smaller electronegativity. Thus, the tunable luminescence of Cr3+ can be realized by co-doping different ions. And these phosphors have potential applications in light-emitting diodes for plant growth.

Abstract:BaMgAl10O17:Eu blue phosphors were synthesized and the effect of doping Er3+ and Nd3+ ions in the phosphor on the luminescent properties was investigated. When the content of Er3+ and Nd3+ ions is small, the phosphor remains single phase and the luminescent intensity of Eu2+ increases effectively. When Er3+ is doped, the shape of the excitation spectrum of the phosphor in the UV (ultraviolet) region remains unchanged. As Nd3+ is doped in the phosphor, the location and intensity of the two excitation peaks, and the emission intensity ratio excited by corresponding UV change dramatically owing to the alternation of crystal field splitting and level barycenter of 4f(6)5d configuration of Eu2+ ion.
Intense photoluminescence and mechanoluminescence of novel BaLaAl3O7:xEu3+ red nanophosphors

Abstract:A series of BaLaAl3O7:xEu3+ nanophosphors have been prepared by the high‐temperature solid state reaction method. The XRD and SEM characterization results present that there exists a slight influence on the crystal structure and the average particle size of the nanophosphors while the Eu3+ ions are doped into the matrix. The intense and narrow red photoluminescence spectra have been measured under the ultraviolet excitation and there are two optimal Eu3+ concentrations of 0.8 and 12 mol%, respectively, and the intensity of the former is stronger than that of the latter. Furthermore, the mechanoluminescence phenomena with the same color are also observed when the samples are scratched with a pen. The calculated results based on the measurements of thermoluminescence spectra reveal that the total initial concentration of trapped carriers of BaLaAl3O7:12Eu3+ nanophosphors is larger than that of BaLaAl3O7:0.8Eu3+ sample, which causes the change trend of ML intensity to be opposite to that of PL intensity even though both have the same Eu3+ doping concentrations.

Abstract:CaAl2O4‐based phosphors with Eu2+ and La3+ codoped have been prepared by the traditional solid‐sintering method, and the photoluminescence intensity can be efficiently enhanced by codoped La3+ ions. Positron annihilation spectroscopy proves that a large amount of vacancies exist in the CaAl2O4 host and the complex defects form on increasing the concentration of doped La3+ ions. The thermoluminescence spectra demonstrate that some new trap levels with various trap depths are produced on increasing the concentration of the doped La3+ ions, which are correlated to the La3+‐associated complex defects in the CaAl2O4‐based phosphor.
Effect of Starting Composition and Post-Anneal on the Structure and Luminescence Properties of Eu-doped Ca-α-SiAlON Phosphors Prepared by Combustion Synthesis

Abstract:Eu-doped Ca-α-SiAlON phosphors, featuring high phase purity, uniform particle size of 3–5μm and good luminescent properties with a yellow emission spectrum under blue light excitation, were prepared by a highly efficient combustion synthesis (CS) method. A certain amount of NaCl was applied as an innovative additive to regulate and control the properties of synthesized phosphors. Further, the effects of NaCl additive in the CS system were systematically investigated and rational proposed. It was found that the effect on accelerating nitridation and crystallization played a dominant role in the reaction as the content of NaCl was less than 6wt%, while the effect of absorbing reaction heat through vaporization was dominant with the further-increased content of NaCl. The intensity of the emission spectrum for the sample doped with 6wt% of NaCl was remarkably enhanced, nearly 40% more than the sample which was not NaCl-doped. Moreover, a continuous blue-shift phenomenon in emission spectra was observed with the increased content of NaCl.
