Abstract:In this article, five typhoon cases observed by quasi-concurrent satellite-based synthetic aperture radar SAR and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer MODIS were studied with a feature-tracking technique. The rainband features around typhoon eyes were first delineated using wavelet analysis, and then the wind speeds were estimated by feature tracking using quasi-concurrent multi-sensor images. It was found that the feature tracking-estimated wind speeds are reasonable compared with the maximum wind speed reported by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center JTWC, which accounts for the radial dependence of wind speed using the Rankine combined vortex approximation. In a specific case, with the aid of Doppler radar observations near the northern coast of Taiwan, wind speed estimation based on the multi-sensor also shows consistent results. This study demonstrates that the local wind distribution of cyclonic winds around typhoon eyes at different radial distances from the typhoon centres may be derived from rainband feature tracking using quasi-concurrent multi-sensor images. This technique may offer useful wind information for typhoon simulations and forecasting.

Abstract:By comparing the normalized radar backscatter cross sections (NRCS) and significant wave height detected by the Jason-1 altimeter with high wind speeds data, an empirical algorithm valid for wind speeds larger than 20 m s-1 is developed and proposed. The study shows that the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and average relative error of the new algorithm are 5.44m s-1 and 16.5%, suggesting increased accuracy by including significant wave height in the retrieval algorithm. Therefore, the proposed algorithm, suitable for retrieving sea surface wind speeds in typhoon and other strong wind conditions, could be treated as supplementary algorithm to the Jason-1 operational algorithm.

Abstract:Geophysical model function(GMF)is the basis of scatterometer wind field retrieval and the prerequisite to effective running of the retrieval algorithm.GMF modeling using traditional statistical method usually needs a great number of backscattering coefficient measurements under various observing parameter conditions.Taking SeaWinds,a type of conically scanning scatterometer,as an example,a unified neural network model(NN GMF)for two polarization modes is designed.Moreover,effects of wind speed sampling interval,wind relative direction sampling interval,and the number of measurements on modeling precision are also analyzed in detail.Compared with Qscat-1 model function,the neural network model is able to reflect the backscattering signature of SeaWinds scatterometer very well,even on the condition that sampling intervals of wind speed and wind relative direction are large or the number of backscattering measurements is small.
Multimodal surface waves during energetic typhoons

Abstract:<p>Ambient noise tomography is a revolutionary technique in past twenty years, and has many far-reaching applications from exploration, regional and continental to global scales. Recently, surface wave overtones have been efficiently extracted from ambient noise cross-correlations by the frequency-Bessel (F-J) transform method. The excitations of overtones from noise cross-correlations, however, have not be investigated well. Here we collect 16-day continuous seismic data recorded by a seismic array installed in Mongolia during two super typhoons in 2011. Utilizing the F-J transform, we extract daily multimodal dispersion&#160;curves with high signal-to-noise ratios from vertical-vertical (Z-Z) component cross-correlations and transverse-transverse (T-T) component cross-correlations. For both the fundamental mode and overtones, our results show that the cross-coefficients between the wind speeds and the Z-Z dispersion amplitudes over 0.1Hz are over 0.6 in typhoon track regions, which suggests that these two typhoons excite Rayleigh waves over 0.1Hz.&#160; For T-T surface waves, however, typhoons only excite the fundament mode over 0.1Hz, and overtones do not relate to typhoons. Our results indicate that energetic typhoons can efficiently excite multimodal Rayleigh waves while Love waves during this period may not come from the microseisms excited by typhoons, which may help us to deepen our understanding of the coupling system among the atmosphere, oceans and the solid earth.</p>

Abstract:Aiming at the main problems in establishing a neural network model for retrieval of the ocean surface wind vector from SeaWinds data, and in consideration of the SeaWinds scatterometer's geometry observation characteristics, the paper presents a neural network retrieval model and a corresponding algorithm, which are suitable to the conical scanning mode of the scatterometer. The retrieval of the model consists of two steps-the wind direction retrieval and the wind speed retrieval. Two sets of data, Level 2A and corresponding Level 2B, and buoy data were selected to validate the model preliminarily. The experimental results demonstrated the feasibility of the retrieval model. The retrieval efficiency of the model was approximately five times higher than that of the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method without obviously reducing the retrieval precision. Thereby, the model provides the possibility for real-time retrieval of ocean surface wind vectors.

Abstract:Sea surface winds derived from the spaceborne rotating pencil-beam scatterometers, such as the current Chinese Haiyang-2 (HY-2) scatterometers and the Indian SCATSAT-1 scatterometer, are used in a wide range of atmospheric and oceanic applications. One key problem of the pencil-beam scatterometers is the relatively low wind quality in the nadir region, due to the poor azimuth diversity of the nadir-track observations. This article proposes to include the altimeter backscatter measurements in the wind inversion to improve the retrieved wind quality in the nadir region of HY-2B scatterometer (HSCAT). First, empirical model functions are developed to relate the C- and Ku-band altimeter backscatters to the neutral surface winds at 10-m height. Subsequently, the maximum likelihood estimator, which is commonly used to perform wind inversion for satellite scatterometers, is adapted to retrieve winds with simultaneous scatterometer and altimeter measurements. The significance of altimeter measurements in the combined wind inversion is addressed by comparing the cost functions of the combined scatterometer/altimeter wind retrieval and the nominal scatterometer inversion. The experimental results are eventually validated using moored buoy winds and the European Centre for Medium-range Weather Forecasting (ECMWF) model winds, indicating that the inclusion of altimeter backscatters has a positive impact on the wind quality over the HSCAT nadir region. Finally, the potential approaches to further improve the combined scatterometer and altimeter wind inversion are summarized.

Abstract:Sea Winds is the most advanced spaceborne scatterometer at present,and it adopts conically scanning operation mode for the first time.For Sea Winds there are only two incidence angles with different polarization respectively.Based on this characteristic of Sea Winds,using some Level 2A data of Sea Winds and corresponding F291 buoy data,according to the shortage and limitation of the traditional modeling method,an unified neural network geophysical model function for both two polarizations is established in this paper.The main feature of this model is that wind vectors used in modeling are all from buoys,so the wind vectors are more objective and accurate.By the comparison made between neural network and Qscat-1 model,and by the bias statistics made between L2B and buoy wind vectors,the established model is validated and analyzed.The results demonstrate the validity of neural network model and discover the possible systematic bias of Qscat-1 model.
Improved the Impact of SST for HY-2A Scatterometer Measurements by Using Neural Network Model

Abstract:The variation of sea surface temperature (SST) can change the backscatter coefficient measured by a scatterometer, resulting in a decrease in the accuracy of the sea surface wind measurement. This study proposed a new approach to correct the effect of SST on the backscatter coefficient. The method focuses on the Ku-band scatterometer HY-2A SCAT, which is more sensitive to SST than C-band scatterometers, can improve the wind measurement accuracy of the scatterometer without relying on reconstructed geophysical model function (GMF), and is more suitable for operational scatterometers. Through comparisons to WindSat wind data, we found that the Ku-band scatterometer HY-2A SCAT wind speeds are systemically lower under low SST and higher under high SST conditions. We trained a neural network model called the temperature neural network (TNNW) using HY-2A data and WindSat data. TNNW-corrected backscatter coefficients retrieved wind speed with a small systematic deviation from WindSat wind speed. In addition, we also carried out a validation of HY-2A wind and TNNW wind using European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) reanalysis data as a reference, and the results showed that the retrieved TNNW-corrected backscatter coefficient wind speed is more consistent with ECMWF wind speed, indicating that the method is effective in correcting SST impact on HY-2A scatterometer measurements.
A Novel Wind Speed Estimation Based on the Integration of an Artificial Neural Network and a Particle Filter Using BeiDou GEO Reflectometry

Abstract:Oceanographic remote sensing, which is based on the sensitivity of reflected signals from the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), so-called GNSS-Reflectometry (GNSS-R), is very useful for the observation of ocean wind speed. Wind speed estimation over the ocean is the core factor in maritime transportation management and the study of climate change. The main concept of the GNSS-R technique is using the different times between the reflected and the direct signals to measure the wind speed and wind direction. Accordingly, this research proposes a novel technique for wind speed estimation involving the integration of an artificial neural network and the particle filter based on a theoretical model. Moreover, particle swarm optimization was applied to find the optimal weight and bias of the artificial neural network, in order to improve the accuracy of the estimation result. The observation dataset of the reflected signal information from BeiDou Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite number 4 was used as an input for the estimation model. The data consisted of two phases with I and Q components. Two periods of BeiDou data were selected, the first period was from 3 to 8 August 2013 and the second period was from 12 to 14 August 2013, which corresponded to events from the typhoon Utor. The in situ wind speed measurement collected from the buoy station was used to validate the results. A coastal experiment was conducted at the Yangjiang site located in the South China Sea. The results show the ability of the proposed technique to estimate wind speed with a root mean square error of approximately 1.9 m/s.
F2F-NN: A Field-to-Field Wind Speed Retrieval Method of Microwave Radiometer Data Based on Deep Learning

Abstract:In this paper, we present a method for retrieving sea surface wind speed (SSWS) from Fengyun-3D (FY-3D) microwave radiation imager (MWRI) data. In contrast to the conventional point-to-point (P2P) retrieval methods, we propose a field-to-field (F2F) SSWS retrieval method based on the basic framework of a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). Considering the spatial continuity and consistency characteristics of wind fields within a certain range, we construct the model based on the basic framework of CNN, which is suitable for retrieving various wind speed intervals, and then synchronously obtaining the smooth and continuous wind field. The retrieval results show that: (1) Comparing the retrieval results with the label data, the root-mean-square error (RMSE) of wind speed is about 0.26 m/s, the F2F-NN model is highly efficient in training and has a strong fitting ability to label data. Comparing the retrieval results with the buoys (NDBC and TAO) data, the RMSE of F2F-NN wind speed is less than 0.91 m/s, the retrieval accuracy is better than the wind field products involved in the comparison. (2) In the hurricane (Sam) area, the F2F-NN model greatly improves the accuracy of wind speed in the FY-3D wind field. Comparing five wind field products with the Stepped-Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR) data, the overall accuracy of the F2F-NN wind data is the highest. Comparing the five wind field products with the International Best Track Archive for Climate Stewardship (IBTrACS) data, the F2F-NN wind field is superior to the other products in terms of maximum wind speed and maximum wind speed radius. The structure of the wind field retrieved by F2F-NN is complete and accurate, and the wind speed changes smoothly and continuously.

Abstract:Timely and accurate sea surface wind field (SSWF) information plays an important role in marine environmental monitoring, weather forecasting, and other atmospheric science studies. In this study, a piecewise linear model is proposed to retrieve SSWF information based on the combination of two different satellite sensors (a microwave scatterometer and an infrared scanning radiometer). First, the time series wind speed dataset, extracted from the HY-2A satellite, and the brightness temperature dataset, extracted from the FY-2E satellite, were matched. The piecewise linear regression model with the highest R2 was then selected as the best model to retrieve SSWF information. Finally, experiments were conducted with the Usagi, Fitow, and Nari typhoons in 2013 to evaluate accuracy. The results show that: (1) the piecewise linear model is successfully established for all typhoons with high R2 (greater than 0.61); (2) for all three cases, the root mean square error () and mean bias error (MBE) are smaller than 2.2 m/s and 1.82 m/s, which indicates that it is suitable and reliable for SSWF information retrieval; and (3) it solves the problem of the low temporal resolution of HY-2A data (12 h), and inherits the high temporal resolution of the FY-2E data (0.5 h). It can provide reliable and high temporal SSWF products.

Abstract:In this letter, we present a validation of the wind speed retrieval from data from the calibration microwave radiometer onboard the Haiyang-2B (HY-2B) satellite against the observations from the stepped-frequency microwave radiometer (SFMR) onboard hurricane aircraft of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) during 50 tropical cyclones (TCs). These data were collected during the cyclone season for the period from 2019 to 2022. The validation yields a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.99 m s −1 , a correlation coefficient ( r ) of 0.69, and a scatter index (SI) of 0.21 for the wind speed at wind speeds of <25 m s −1 , which are worse than those achieved through the comparison with the HY-2B scatterometer, i.e. an RMSE of 1.15 m s −1 , an r value of 0.96, and an SI of 0.11. This is probably caused by the fact that the brightness temperature measurement from the calibration microwave radiometer is likely affected by whitecaps caused by wave breaking; however, whitecaps have less influence on the sea surface backscattering signal under a regular sea state. At wind speeds of >25 m s −1 , the accuracy is reduced to an RMSE of 2.19 m s −1 , an r value of 0.75, and an SI of 0.07. In the presence of rain, significant distortion was observed, i.e. a variation of 3 m s −1 for a rain rate of 15 mm hr −1 . This behaviour was also observed in the analysis of the HY-2B scatterometer product at low-to-moderate wind speeds. In this sense, it is believed that correction associated with rain has to be conducted in wind retrieval from HY-2B data.

Abstract:The wind and wave derived from the scatterometer and altimeter on board the Chinese Haiyang-2B (HY-2B) satellite were systemically evaluated in this article. The analysis of matchups between advanced scatterometer and the winds from HY-2B scatterometer with wind speeds up to 25 m/s showed a 0.78 m/s root-mean-square error (RMSE) with a 0.97 correlation (COR), superior to the 1.2 m/s RMSE and 0.93 COR of winds from the altimeter of HY-2B. Simultaneously, significant wave heights (SWHs) measured from HY-2B were collocated with measurements from the Jason-3 altimeter. Analysis of the calibration concluded that the observations from the HY-2B altimeter performed well at low-to-moderate sea states, yielding an RMSE of 0.29 m for SWH with a 0.98 COR for geophysical data records (GDRs) data after systematic corrections using the MOE determination method. In particular there were 20 typhoons occurring in China Seas during 2019–2020. The evaluation of high SWH when compared with those (SWH > 7 m) from Jason-3/WW3 indicated that HY-2B is accurate, with a 0.87 m/0.68 m RMSE and a 0.85 COR with SWH. Finally, statistical analysis of wind speed and SWH was investigated through waves simulated from the WAVEWATCH-III (WW3)/hybrid coordinate ocean using the current and the sea surface temperature (SST). The HY-2B wind measurements performed well at sea surface currents below 1 m/s and SWH less than 3 m, while a term for SST should be included in the scatterometer wind speed retrieval. In addition, wave states likely affect the accuracy of HY-2B wave speed measurements.

Abstract:The ICESat-2 photon-counting lidar can simultaneously observe high-resolution radiometric and geometric characteristics of ocean waves. In this study, combining the wave radiometric and geometric characteristics, ICESat-2 can provide robust and accurate wind speeds over oceans that cannot be achieved by using a single characteristic. Specifically, with an along-track segment of 700 m, the sea surface photons and surface profile are detected and generated from ICESat-2 ATL03 geolocated photons by which the received energy and wave height are obtained. The unknown atmospheric transmittance and swell wave height have significant impacts on deriving the water surface reflectance (radiometric characteristic) and the wind-driven water height (geometric characteristic), respectively. We use all available ICESat-2 data in 2018 and 2019 to determine the unknown parameters and further separately estimate wind speeds. The radiation-based method performs better at low wind speeds, while the geometry-based method performs better at high wind speeds, and we combine each specific advantage to obtain more reliable wind speeds. In the Pacific Ocean, Atlantic Ocean, and Indian Ocean, thousands of ICESat-2 ground tracks from 2020 are used to estimate wind speeds, and the performance is validated against a trustworthy data source of ERA5 with a root-mean-square error (RMSE) of ∼0.3 m for wave heights and an RMSE of ∼1.5 m/s for wind speeds. ICESat-2 has shown great ability to provide independent wind speeds over oceans with high accuracy and resolution, which may fill the gap of wind speeds on a small scale as the large-scale results are well observed by spaceborne microwave devices.

Abstract:This paper develops the models that can be used in different flight scenarios to retrieve the wind speed using the width of the normalized delay waveform (NDW). First, the factors that influence the NDW width, including the wind speed, wind direction, flight height, and elevation angle, are analyzed. The contribution of each independent variable to the regression is explored. The results show that the wind speed, flight height, and elevation angle contribute more significantly than the wind direction so the wind direction can be ignored in the model. The multiple regression, in which the function terms of NWD width, flight height, and elevation angle above are taken as independent variables and wind speed is taken as the dependent variable, is proposed to develop the model of retrieving wind speed. Through the simulation, a root-mean-square error (RMSE) over 3 m/s can be obtained. In order to improve the retrieval performance, a Back-Propagation (BP) network is trained as an alternative to the analytical models above. Better performance is achieved with an RMSE less than 2.5 m/s under the same conditions with the analytical model. The errors of retrieved wind speed are analyzed. The conclusions are that: 1) both analytical model and BP network have inherent regression biases, especially for high wind speed from 15 to 20m/s so that at wind speeds higher than 16 m/s, the tendency for retrieval accuracy to rapidly become worse appears and 2) the number of incoherent averaging should be over 1000 to reduce the impact of thermal and speckle noise. At the end of the paper, airborne data are processed to retrieve wind speed utilizing proposed models and the matching method to compare in-situ wind speed from the National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System (CFS). By comparing the retrieval results, the proposed methods could obtain the accuracy with the same level of matching method.

Abstract:Global navigation satellite system reflectometry (GNSS-R) delay-Doppler map (DDM) measures the sea surface roughness, which has recently been applied to retrieve sea surface wind speed. However, current studies on GNSS-R wind speed retrieval only use the spatial domain of the DDM without considering the variation patterns in the map, which is regarded as frequency-domain information of the map. In this study, we propose a joint frequency&ahat;“spatial domain network (FSNet) based on reflectivity data provided by the cyclone global navigation satellite system (CyGNSS) mission. We construct a matchup dataset between the CyGNSS satellite data and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) model data from 1 January 2018 to 31 December 2019. The wind speed range is 0–25 m/s. Using the proposed FSNet, frequency and spatial features are simultaneously extracted. The frequency-domain feature supplements the spatial-domain information of the mid- and high-level features in the neural network. Rather than directly concatenating the frequency-domain features with the spatial-domain features, we designed a feature fusion module (FFM) to fuse frequency and spatial features for wind speed retrieval adaptively. Experiments show that our FSNet wind speed retrieval has a root mean square error (RMSE) of 1.63 m/s for a wind range of 0–25 m/s. This accuracy is 25.4% better than the operational algorithm provided by the CyGNSS Level 2 wind speed product. For a higher wind range of 16–25 m/s, FSNet performed even better, improving the RMSE by 31%.

A Novel Method for Ocean Wind Speed Detection Based on Energy Distribution of Beidou Reflections

Abstract:The Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry (GNSS-R) technique exploits the characteristics of reflected GNSS signals to estimate the geophysical parameters of the earth's surface. This paper focuses on investigating the wind speed retrieval method using ocean scattered signals from a Beidou Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite. Two new observables are proposed by computing the ratio of the low energy zone and the high energy zone of the delay waveform. Coastal experimental raw data from a Beidou GEO satellite are processed to establish the relationship between the energy-related observables and the sea surface wind. When the delay waveform normalized amplitude (this will be referred to as "threshold" in what follows) is 0.3, fitting results show that the coefficient of determination is more than 0.76 in the gentle wind scenario (<10 m/s), with a root mean square error (RMSE) of less than 1.0 m/s. In the Typhoon UTOR scenario (12.7 m/s~37.3 m/s), the correlation level exceeds 0.82 when the threshold is 0.25, with a RMSE of less than 3.10 m/s. Finally, the impact of the threshold and coherent integration time on wind speed retrieval is discussed to obtain an optimal result. When the coherent integration time is 50 milliseconds and the threshold is 0.15, the best wind speed retrieval error of 2.63 m/s and a correlation level of 0.871 are obtained in the UTOR scenario.
Regional Forecasting of Wind Speeds during Typhoon Landfall in Taiwan: A Case Study of Westward-Moving Typhoons

Abstract:Taiwan is located on a route where typhoons often strike. Each year, the strong winds accompanying typhoons are a substantial threat and cause significant damage. However, because the terrains of high mountains in Taiwan vary greatly, when a typhoon passes the Central Mountain Range (CMR), the wind speed of typhoons becomes difficult to predict. This research had two primary objectives: (1) to develop data-driven techniques and a powerful artificial neural network (ANN) model to predict the highly complex nonlinear wind systems in western Taiwan; and, (2) to investigate the accuracy of wind speed predictions at various locations and for various durations in western Taiwan when the track of westward typhoons is affected by the complex geographical shelters and disturbances of the CMR. This study developed a typhoon wind speed prediction model that evaluated various typhoon tracks (covering Type 2, Type 3, and Type 4 tracks, as defined by the Central Weather Bureau), and evaluated the prediction accuracy at Hsinchu, Wuqi, and Kaohsiung Stations in western Taiwan. Back propagation neural networks (BPNNs) were employed to establish wind speed prediction models, and a linear regression model was adopted as the benchmark to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the BPNNs. The results were as follows: (1) The BPNNs generally had favorable performance in predicting wind speeds and their performances were superior to linear regressions; (2) when absolute errors were adopted to evaluate the prediction performances, the predictions at Hsinchu Station were the most accurate, whereas those at Wuqi Station were the least accurate; however, when relative errors were adopted, the predictions at Hsinchu Station were again the most accurate, whereas those at Kaohsiung were the least accurate; and, (3) regarding the relative error rates for the maximum wind speed of Types 2, 3, and 4 typhoons, Wuqi, Kaohsiung, and Wuqi had the most accurate performance, respectively; as for maximum wind time error (ETM) for Types 2, 3, and 4 typhoons, Kaohsiung, Wuqi, and Wuqi correspondingly performed the most favorably.

Abstract:In this paper, 17 severe typhoons that have affected Hong Kong are simulated using an advanced numerical atmospheric simulation system - Weather Research and Forecasting model (WRF). The simulated surface pressure and wind fields of these typhoons are validated against a wide range of field observations. Then azimuth-dependent models for the radius of maximum winds and the Holland parameter are established statistically at the surface level. It is observed that the shape parameter of the Holland pressure model is smaller at the surface than that at the gradient level. And the Holland wind field model cannot well reproduce the simulated radial wind profiles due to the complexities of nonuniform surface conditions and typhoon dynamics. It is found that the modified Rankine model provides satisfactory estimates of typhoon wind speeds in Hong Kong. Additionally, wind field asymmetries of typhoons approaching Hong Kong are highly correlated with the typhoon track velocity, vertical wind shear and the angle between them. The proposed statistical models and identified characteristics of wind field asymmetries of typhoons will provide useful information for rapidly assessing typhoon wind hazards.
