Abstract:It is shown that an event sample from the Monte Carlo simulation of a random cascading alpha model with fixed dynamical fluctuation strength is intermittent but not chaotic, while the variance of dynamical fluctuation strength in different events will result in both the intermittency and the chaoticity behavior. This shows that fractality and chaoticity are two connected but different features of non-linear dynamics in high energy collisions.

Abstract:Motivated to explore the dynamical mechanism of multi-fragmentation phase transition and expand our knowledge on the deterministic chaos in nonlinear dynamic process, we study systematically the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of heavy ion collisions at intermediate energy. In order to highlight the general characteristics of the collision dynamics, in the present paper, we simulate a simple collision system, Ca+Ca, and obverse the performances of the typical nonlinear characteristic quantities such as the production of generalized entropy and the fractal structure of the semiclassical phase space during the reaction process. The multifragmentation entropy, information dimension and the dynamical fluctuations of fragment mass distribution in the final state of the reaction are also evaluated. Our results about the intermediate processes and the final products of the reaction are verified mutually so that confirm strongly the existence of nonlinear chaos in the heavy ion collisions at intermediate energy. Meanwhile, we find that the typical characteristics of the critical phase transition obtained in the analysis of the final production of the reaction are relatively more clear in the vicinity of the incident energies E=100 MeV.

Abstract:An experiment on fractals for undergraduates has been designed in which students can obtain various viscous fingering fractal patterns through hands-on operation and computer simulation. They can also measure the fractal dimensions of these patterns and thus grasp the basic ideas of this interesting phenomenon.

Abstract:In this study, we examine the statistics of level spectra in a noninteracting electron gas confined to a Sierpinski carpet lattice. These lattices are constructed using two types of the self and gene patterns, and they are categorized by the area-perimeter scaling law. The singularly continuous spectra, along with the nearest level spacing distribution and gap-ratio distribution, reveal a critical phase different from both extended and localized phases. This critical phase differs from the behavior near the Anderson model's metal-insulator transition. The Wigner-like conjecture is confirmed for both lattice classes, indicating Gaussian orthogonal symmetry. A similar observation was made in a quasiperiodic lattice [Phys. Rev. Lett. 80, 3996 (1998)]. The self-similar nature of fractals also leads to level clustering behavior.

Abstract:The burgeoning field of "fractons," a class of models where quasiparticles are strictly immobile or display restricted mobility that can be understood through generalized multipolar symmetries and associated conservation laws, is reviewed. With a focus on merely a corner of this fast-growing subject, it is demonstrated how one class of such theories, symmetric tensor and coupled-vector gauge theories, surprisingly emerge from familiar elasticity of a two-dimensional quantum crystal. The disclination and dislocation crystal defects, respectively, map onto charges and dipoles of the fracton gauge theory. This fracton-elasticity duality leads to predictions of fractonic phases and quantum phase transitions to their descendants that are duals of the commensurate crystal, supersolid, smectic, and hexatic liquid crystals, as well as amorphous solids, quasicrystals, and elastic membranes. It is shown how these dual gauge theories provide a field-theoretic description of quantum melting transitions through a generalized Higgs mechanism. It is demonstrated how they can be equivalently constructed as gauged models with global multipole symmetries. Extensions of such gauge-elasticity dualities to generalized elasticity theories are expected to provide a route to the discovery of new fractonic models and their potential experimental realizations. https://doi.org/10.1103/RevModPhys.96.011001 © 2024 American Physical Society

Evidence of fractal structures in hadrons

Abstract:This study focuses on the presence of (multi)fractal structures in hadronic matter through the momentum distributions of mesons produced in proton-proton collisions between 23 GeV and 63 GeV. The analysis demonstrates that the q -exponential behaviour of the particle momentum distributions is consistent with fractal characteristics, exhibiting fractal structures in confined hadronic matter with features similar to those observed in the deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP) regime. Furthermore, the systematic analysis of meson production in hadronic collisions at energies below 1 TeV suggests that specific fractal parameters are universal, independently of confinement or deconfinement, while others may be influenced by the quark content of the produced meson. These results pave the way for further research exploring the implications of fractal structures on various physical distributions.

Abstract:We identify a quantum critical point with fractal symmetry whose effective theory eludes the renormalization group framework. We consider the Newman-Moore model with three-body interaction subjected to an external transverse field, which exhibits a Kramers-Wannier type self-duality and a fractal $Z_2$ symmetry with Ising charge conserved on a fractal subset of sites, i.e., on Sierpinski gaskets. Using large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we identify a continuous quantum phase transition between a phase with spontaneous fractal symmetry breaking and a paramagnetic phase. This phase transition is characterized by the emergence of a fractal scaling dimension $d=\ln(3)/\ln(2)$ at the quantum critical point, where the power-law exponent of the correlation function is related to the fractal dimension of the Sierpinski triangle. We develop a field theory to elucidate such quantum criticality and denote the fractal scaling as a subsequence of UV-IR mixing, where the low energy modes at the critical point are manipulated by short-wavelength physics due to the fractal symmetry.

Abstract:A Clifford–Finslerian physical unification is proposed based on Clifford–Finslerian mathematical structures and three physical principles. In the Clifford–Finslerian mathematical structure, spontaneous symmetry breaking is automatically embedded in fractal branches. With the action principle, connection principle and computation principle, physics can be unified, in which the Riemman–Einstein system and Euclid–Newton system are naturally included when quaternion are reduced to complex and real phases.

Abstract:An overview has been given on fractal properties of percolating systems, introduction of fractons, their characteristic properties and experimental evidence of existence of fractons. The results of investigation on effect of fractons on Kondo-like effect in metallic glasses, specific transpost properties in dilutedd magnets, exciton relaxation dynamics in semiconductors, happing conductivity, transition temperature and conductivity temperature dependence in superconductors with fractal structure,are reported. The experimental evidence of superlocalization property of fractons in a happing system is given as well.

Abstract:It is pointed out that the concepts and methods introduced by Bachelier and by Mandelbrot to Finance and Economics can be used to examine the fluctuations observed in high-energy hadron production processes. Theoretical arguments and experimental evidences are presented which show that the relative variations of hadron-numbers between successive rapidity intervals are non-Gaussian stable random variables, which exhibit stationarity and scaling. The implications of the obtained results are discussed.

Abstract:Studies of exotic hadrons such as the $\chi_{cl}(3872)$ state provide crucial insights into the fundamental force governing the strong interaction dynamics, with an emerging new frontier to investigate their production in high energy nuclear collisions where a partonic medium is present. This contribution discusses the production mechanisms of exotic hadrons in such collisions and analyzes novel effects from the partonic medium, demonstrating the potential to use heavy ion measurements for deciphering their internal structure and understanding their in-medium evolutions.

Abstract:This work reports an extensive study of three-dimensional topological ordered phases that, in one of the directions behave like usual topological order concerning mobility of excitations, but in the perpendicular plane manifest type-II fracton physics dictated by a fractal subsystem symmetry. We obtain an expression for the ground state degeneracy, which depends intricately on the sizes of the plane, signaling a strong manifestation of ultraviolet/infrared (UV/IR) mixing. The ground state degeneracy can be interpreted in terms of spontaneous/explicit breaking of fractal subsystem symmetries. We also study the boundary physics, which in turn is useful to understand the connection with certain two-dimensional phases. Finally, we derive a low-energy but not long-distance effective field theory, by Higgsing a fractal $U(1)$ symmetry and taking the deep IR limit. This description embodies in a natural way several aspects of the phases, such as the content of generalized global symmetries, the role of fractal symmetries on the mobility of excitations, the anomalies, and the boundary physics.

Abstract:Initial geometrical distribution and fluctuation can affect the collective expansion in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. This effect may be more evident in small system (such as B + B) than in large one (Pb + Pb). This work presents the collision system dependence of collective flows and discusses about effects on collective flows from initial fluctuations in a framework of a multiphase transport model. The results shed light on system scan on experimental efforts to small system physics.

Abstract:The key role of the colliding component in soft hadronic interactions is studied. The different colliding components are found to display quite different distributions for both effective energy and fragmentation baryon momentum. After the calculation of the resonance decay correction to these distributions, a principle and method, which can directly decide the colliding component according experimental data are given. The data now available seem to rule out valence quark and support constituent quark as colliding component.

Abstract:The experimental results on factorial moments (FM's) in different phase space dimensions are examined in some detail. The general trends of one- and three-dimensional FM's and the complexity of the two-dimensional ones are pointed out. It is shown that all the complicated patterns of FM's in different dimensions can be understood comprehensively under the assumption of self-affine fluctuations in 3D, which means that anomalous scaling of FM's may exist in multiparticle final states provided the shrinkage of phase space is done correctly according to the anisotropic property of multiplicity fluctuations.

Abstract:We first revisit impact-parameter dependent collisions of ultra-relativistic particles in quantum field theory. Two conditions sufficient for defining an impact-parameter dependent cross section are given, which could be violated in proton-proton collisions. By imposing these conditions, a general formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section is derived. Then, using soft-collinear effective theory, we derive a factorization formula for the impact-parameter dependent cross section for inclusive hard processes with only colorless final-state products in hadron and nuclear collisions. It entails defining thickness beam functions, which are Fourier transforms of transverse phase-space parton distribution functions. By modelling non-perturbative modes in thickness beam functions of large nuclei in heavy-ion collisions, the factorization formula confirms the cross section in the Glauber model for hard processes. Besides, the factorization formula is verified up to one loop in perturbative QCD for the inclusive Drell-Yan process in quark-antiquark collisions at a finite impact parameter.

Abstract:Higher-order anisotropic flows v(4) and v(6) of charged hadrons in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider are studied in a multiphase transport model that has previously been used successfully for describing the elliptic flow v(2) of identified hadrons in these collisions. We find that the same parton scattering cross section of about 10 mb used in explaining the measured v(2) of charged hadrons can also reproduce the recent data on their v(4) and v(6) from Au+Au collisions at roots=200A GeV. It is further found that v(4) is a more sensitive probe of the initial partonic dynamics in these collisions than v(2). Moreover, higher-order parton anisotropic flows are non-negligible and satisfy the scaling relation v(n,q)(p(T))similar tov(2,q)(n/2)(p(T)), which leads naturally to the observed similar scaling relation among hadron anisotropic flows when the coalescence model is used to describe hadron production from the partonic matter.
