Abstract:The sol-gel chemistry of silica has long been used for manipulating the size, shape, and microstructure of mesoporous silica particles. This manipulation is performed in mild conditions through controlling the hydrolysis and condensation of silicon alkoxide. Compared to amorphous silica particles, the preparation of mesoporous silica, such as MCM-41, using the sol-gel approach offers several unique advantages in the fields of catalysis, medicament, and environment, due to its ordered mesoporous structure, high specific surface area, large pore volume, and easily functionalized surface. In this review, our primary focus is on the latest research related to the manipulation of mesoporous silica architectures using the sol-gel approach. We summarize various structures, including hollow, yolk-shell, multi-shelled hollow, Janus, nanotubular, and 2D membrane structures. Additionally, we survey sol-gel strategies involving the introduction of various functional elements onto the surface of mesoporous silica to enhance its performance. Furthermore, we outline the prospects and challenges associated with mesoporous silica featuring different structures and functions in promising applications, such as high-performance catalysis, biomedicine, wastewater treatment, and CO2 capture.

Abstract:The outstanding journey towards the investigation of mesoporous materials commences with the discovery of high surface area porous silica materials, named MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter-41) according to the inventors’ name Mobile scientists in the United States. Based on a self-assembled supramolecular templating mechanism, the synthesis of mesoporous silica has extended to wide varieties of silica categories along with versatile applications of all these types in many fields. These silica families have some extraordinary structural features, like highly tunable nanoscale sized pore diameter, good Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface areas, good flexibility to accommodate different organic and inorganic functional groups, metals etc., onto their surface. As a consequence, thousands of scientists and researchers throughout the world have reported numerous silica materials in the form of published articles, communication, reviews, etc. Beside this, attention is also given to the morphology-oriented synthesis of silica nanoparticles and their significant effects on the emerging fields of study like catalysis, energy applications, sensing, environmental, and biomedical research. This review highlights a consolidated overview of those morphology-based mesoporous silica particles, emphasizing their syntheses and potential role in many promising fields of research.

Temperature-Responsive Multifunctional Switchable Nanoreactors of Poly (N-Isopropylacrylamide)/sio2/lanthanide-polyoxometalates/au: Controlled On/Off Catalytic and Luminescent System

Abstract:A method was developed for the preparation of temperature-responsive multifunctional nanoreactor by coating the poly (N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) on the external surface of silicallanthanide-POMs/Au spheres. The nanoreactor showed the repeated on/off catalytic activity and switchable luminescence by temperature stimuli. For example, the nanocomplexes showed strong red luminescence in solution and excellent catalytic activity in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol at 25 degrees C. However, when the temperature was 40 degrees C, the red luminescence almost disappeared in solution and catalytic activity was sharply decreased. Moreover, in solutions of K4Fe(CN)(6) containing Na2SO4 at 25 degrees C, it demonstrated the well-defined cyclic voltammograms (CV) peaks with large peak currents, showing the "on" state; at 40 degrees C, the CV response was significantly suppressed, showing the "off" state. The smart nanoreactors have great potential for applications in many fields, such as bio-materials, controlled labeling catalysis, switches and so on. (C) 2017 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The ability to control the function and structure of some promising nanosystems using an external stimulus is attractive research to develop programmable and reconfigurable intelligent nanomaterials. The focal point of this review is the silicon-based nanoporous materials, and particularly the mesoporous silica materials (MSMs) class (pore size: 2–50 nm), due to their important intrinsic properties, such as high surface area, highly ordered nanostructure, narrow pore size distribution, various dimensions (one-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional), and easily functionable. One of the most essential organic components that can be incorporated in MSMs is organic photochromic molecules (OPMs), such as azobenzene, stilbene, dithienylethenes, and spiropyrans. OPMs can be incorporated into MSMs, to form photochromic mesoporous organosilica materials (PMOMs), in two different ways: physical (non-covalent immobilization) or chemical (covalent immobilization) binding. PMOMs are considered smart nanomaterials because they have the ability to undergo reversible changes in the solid state when exposed to an external electromagnetic radiation. PMOMs have been the subject of many research studies during the last decade due to their potential applications, especially as chemosensors. This review discusses the main families of OPMs, their incorporation into MSMs using different methods, and the applications of some PMOMs as chemosensors.

Abstract:The concept of using single molecules as key building blocks for logic gates, diodes and transistors to perform basic functions of digital electronic devices at the molecular scale has been explored over the past decades. However, in addition to mimicking the basic functions of current silicon devices, molecules often possess unique properties that have no parallel in conventional materials and promise new hybrid devices with novel functions that cannot be achieved with equivalent solid-state devices. The most appealing example is the molecular switch. Over the past decade, molecular switches on surfaces have been intensely investigated. A variety of external stimuli such as light, electric field, temperature, tunneling electrons and even chemical stimulus have been used to activate these molecular switches between bistable or even multiple states by manipulating molecular conformations, dipole orientations, spin states, charge states and even chemical bond formation. The switching event can occur either on surfaces or in break junctions. The aim of this review is to highlight recent advances in molecular switches triggered by various external stimuli, as investigated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (LT-STM) and the break junction technique. We begin by presenting the molecular switches triggered by various external stimuli that do not provide single molecule selectivity, referred to as non-selective switching. Special focus is then given to selective single molecule switching realized using the LT-STM tip on surfaces. Single molecule switches operated by different mechanisms are reviewed and discussed. Finally, molecular switches embedded in self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) and single molecule junctions are addressed.

Abstract:Recent progress in in-situ modification of mesoporous silica molecular sieves was reviewed.The modification was achieved by in-situ coating mesoporous host such as SBA-15 molecular sieve with basic oxide such as MgO during synthesis of mesoporous material to prepare a novel functional material with both mesoporous structure and strong basicity.Effects of salt types used in modification and the addition manner on structure and stability of SBA-15 molecular sieve were discussed.Mesoporous silica with Ia3d structure had been prepared.Large number of oxide guests can be highly dispersed in mesoporous silica molecular sieves host by grinding the synthesized mesoporous silica with metallic salts.

Abstract:Drug delivery systems (DDS) are used to deliver therapeutic drugs to improve selectivity and reduce side effects. With the development of nanotechnology, many nanocarriers have been developed and applied to drug delivery, including mesoporous silica. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have attracted a lot of attention for simple synthesis, biocompatibility, high surface area and pore volume. Based on the pore system and surface modification, gated mesoporous silica nanoparticles can be designed to realize on-command drug release, which provides a new approach for selective delivery of antitumor drugs. Herein, this review mainly focuses on the "gate keepers" of mesoporous silica for drug controlled release in nearly few years (2017-2020). We summarize the mechanism of drug controlled release in gated MSNs and different gated materials: inorganic gated materials, organic gated materials, self-gated drug molecules, and biological membranes. The facing challenges and future prospects of gated MSNs are discussed rationally in the end. Abstract:<p>Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), one of the important porous materials, have garnered interest owing to their highly attractive physicochemical features and advantageous morphological attributes. They are of particular importance for use in diverse fields including, but not limited to, adsorption, catalysis, and medicine. Despite their intrinsic stable siliceous frameworks, excellent mechanical strength, and optimal morphological attributes, pristine MSNs suffer from poor drug loading efficiency, as well as compatibility and degradability issues for therapeutic, diagnostic, and tissue engineering purposes. Collectively, the desirable and beneficial properties of MSNs have been harnessed by modifying the surface of the siliceous frameworks through incorporating supramolecular assemblies and various metal species, and through incorporating supramolecular assemblies and various metal species and their conjugates. Substantial advancements of these innovative colloidal inorganic nanocontainers drive researchers in promoting them toward innovative applications like stimuli (light/ultrasound/magnetic)‐responsive delivery‐associated therapies with exceptional performance in vivo. Here, a brief overview of the fabrication of siliceous frameworks, along with discussions on the significant advances in engineering of MSNs, is provided. The scope of the advancement in terms of structural and physicochemical attributes and their effects on biomedical applications with a particular focus on recent studies is emphasized. Finally, interesting perspectives are recapitulated, along with the scope toward clinical translation.</p>

Abstract:In the past decade, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) with a large surface area and pore volume have attracted considerable attention for their application in drug delivery and biomedicine. In this review, we highlight the recent advances in silica-assisted drug delivery systems, including (1) MSN-based immediate/sustained drug delivery systems and (2) MSN-based controlled/targeted drug delivery systems. In addition, we summarize the biomedical applications of MSNs, including (1) MSN-based biotherapeutic agent delivery; (2) MSN-assisted bioimaging applications; and (3) MSNs as bioactive materials for tissue regeneration.From the Clinical Editor: This comprehensive review presents recent advances in mesoporous silica nanoparticles assisted drug delivery systems, including both immediate and sustained delivery systems as well as controlled release and targeted drug delivery systems. Abstract:The fabrication of novel porous materials remains of great interest because of their intriguing architectures, various properties, and promising applications. As typical porous materials with high crystallinity, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted continuous attention to the scientific community. However, poor stability and monotonous pore structures hinder their practical and/or advanced applications. To address these concerns, many researchers have devoted themselves to the topics of hierarchical structures and composites by the combination of different components. The present review focuses on the recent advances in MOF-silica composites, where the silica materials can be porous or nonporous. It first provides the fundamentals of porous materials, including zeolites, mesoporous silica, and MOFs, and then shifts to the fabrication of MOF-silica composites. In the following sections, the emphasis of the discussion is placed on the applications of MOF-silica composites, such as adsorption, catalysis, drug release, extraction, magnetism, and sensing. Furthermore, the applications of MOF-silica composites-derived carbon materials are also reviewed and discussed in detail. Abstract:Research in intelligent drug delivery systems within the field of biomedicine promises to enhance drug efficacy at disease sites and reduce associated side effects. Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs), characterized by their large specific surface area, appropriate pore size, and excellent biocompatibility, have garnered significant attention as one of the most effective carriers for drug delivery. The hydroxyl groups on their surface are active functional groups, facilitating easy functionalization. The installation of controllable molecular machines on the surface of mesoporous silica to construct nanovalves represents a crucial advancement in developing intelligent drug delivery systems (DDSs) and addressing the issue of premature drug release. In this review, we compile several notable and illustrative examples of MSNs and discuss their varied applications in DDSs. These applications span regulated and progressive drug release mechanisms. MSNs hold the potential to enhance drug solubility, improve drug stability, and mitigate drug toxicity, attributable to their ease of functionalization. Furthermore, intelligent hybrid nanomaterials are being developed, featuring programmable properties that react to a broad spectrum of stimuli, including light, pH, enzymes, and redox triggers, through the use of molecular and supramolecular switches.

Abstract:Functionalized mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have been widely investigated in the fields of nanotechnology and material science, owing to their high surface area, diverse structure, controllable cavity, high biocompatibility, and ease of surface modification. In the past few years, great efforts have been devoted to preparing functionalized MSNs for biosensing applications with satisfactory performance. The functional structure and composition in the synthesis of MSNs play important roles in high biosensing performance. With the development of material science, diverse functional units have been rationally incorporated into mesoporous structures, which endow MSNs with design flexibility and multifunctionality. Here, an overview of the recent developments of MSNs as nanocarriers is provided, including the methodologies for the preparation of MSNs and the nanostructures and physicochemical properties of MSNs, as well as the latest trends of MSNs and their use in biosensing. Finally, the prospects and challenges of MSNs are presented.

Abstract:Hybridized nanomaterials have been extensively investigated due to their superior properties over individual nanomaterials and molecules. Amorphous silica nanoparticles are often employed as a matrix or carrier, along with a functional component, to form a silica-based nanohybrid. The functional component can be a molecule or another type of nanomaterial. These nanohybrids combine the advantages employing both silica and the functional component. So far, a variety of applications of such nanohybrids has been reported. In this review, we have covered several major types of silica nanohybrids. The functional components include regular fluorophores, chemiluminescent molecules, drug molecules, quantum dots, gold nanomaterials, magnetic nanoparticles and nanocatalysts. The synthesis strategies, properties and potential applications of each silica nanohybrid are discussed in detail. A conclusion is drawn based on the current progress and future perspectives of the silica nanohybrids.

Abstract:It has been more than 30 years since the first ordered mesoporous silica molecular sieve (MCM-41) was reported, but the enthusiasm for exploiting mesoporous silica is still growing due to its superior properties, such as its controllable morphology, excellent hosting capability, easy functionalization, and good biocompatibility. In this narrative review, the brief history of the discovery of mesoporous silica and several important mesoporous silica families are summarized. The development of mesoporous silica microspheres with nanoscale dimensions, hollow mesoporous silica microspheres, and dendritic mesoporous silica nanospheres is also described. Meanwhile, common synthesis methods for traditional mesoporous silica, mesoporous silica microspheres, and hollow mesoporous silica microspheres are discussed. Then, we introduce the biological applications of mesoporous silica in fields such as drug delivery, bioimaging, and biosensing. We hope this review will help people to understand the history of the development of mesoporous silica molecular sieves and become familiar with their synthesis methods and applications in biology.

Abstract:The creation of molecular electronic switches by using smart molecules is of great importance to the field of molecular electronics. This requires a fundamental understanding of the intrinsic electron transport mechanisms, which depend on several factors including the charge transport pathway, the molecule-electrode coupling strength, the energy of the molecular frontier orbitals, and the electron spin state. On the basis of significant progresses achieved in both experiments and theory over the past decade, in this review article we focus on new insights into the design and fabrication of different molecular switches and the corresponding switching effects, which is crucial to the development of molecular electronics. We summarize the strategies developed for single-molecule device fabrication and the mechanism of these switching effects. These analyses should be valuable for deeply understanding the switching effects in molecular electronic devices.
