Abstract:Energy shortage and freshwater scarcity are critical challenges for the sustainable development of the society. The photovoltaic-thermal (PVT) hybrid system offers a promising strategy by harnessing solar energy for electricity and water cogeneration. However, existing systems suffer from relatively low efficiency due to incomplete solar spectrum utilization. To address this, we propose a novel PVT integrated system that combines semi-transparent solar cells and multistage interfacial stills to maximize solar spectrum utilization, allowing for efficient electricity and freshwater co-production. Experimental results demonstrate a record-high solar-to-vapor efficiency of 210 % with a production rate of 3.17 L m −2 h −1 under one-sun, while maintaining an uncompromised electrical efficiency of 19.57 %. Furthermore, we employ a verified theoretical framework to provide optimized strategies for concurrent enhancement of electricity-water production, by improving internal heat and mass transfer and effectively reducing the thickness of the interstage air gap. Moreover, we introduce a non-contact model for system structure optimization proposed to match the high transmittance of solar cells. This work realizes full solar spectrum utilization to cogenerate electricity and freshwater, offering optimized strategies from the thermal perspective for future research.

Abstract:Desalination processes often require large amounts of energy to create clean water, and vice versa for the generation of energy. This interdependence creates a tension between the two essential resources. Current research focuses on one or the other, which exacerbates water‐energy stress, while few tackle both issues jointly. Herein, a low‐carbon technology, H2O–H2 co‐generation system that enables concurrent steady freshwater and clean energy output is reported. The water‐energy coupled technology features a spectrally and thermally managed solar harvesting gel for photoredox and photoheating effects. This photothermal catalytic gel exploits interfacial solar heating for heat confinement, and localized plasmonic heating at the catalyst active sites to remarkably improve water and hydrogen production, thus maximizing energy value per area. To this end, a stand‐alone renewable solar desalination system is successfully demonstrated for parallel production of freshwater and hydrogen under natural sunlight. By doing so, the water–energy nexus is transformed into a synergistic bond that offers opportunities to better meet expected demand rather than acting in competition.

Abstract:Energy and freshwater, as natural and important strategic resources, are the lifeblood and basic security of economic and social development. Freshwater production consumes vast energy, and vice versa. It is rare and still a significant challenge in the rational design of implementation for efficient clean water and chemical fuel production via solar-thermal technology, reconciling the water-energy contradiction. Herein, we demonstrated a new double-stage solar catalytic membrane distillation (DSCMD) system, integrating photocatalyst into the photothermic electrospun film that is imparted with the water feeding, photothermic conversion and photo -catalysis functions, which simultaneously realized the stable freshwater and enhanced clean fuels production. The photothermal/catalytic materials synergistically harvest photons for localized heat generation, which also acts on catalytically active sites to enhance the yield of vapor and CO, so as to maximize the utilization of solar energy. As a result, the overall freshwater collection rate of 1.45 kg m -2h- 1 with the solar-to-water efficiency of up to 90.6 % and enhanced CO evolution rate of 21.29 mu mol gcat -1 h-1 from CO2 photoreduction are achieved by more effective vapor transportation and latent heat recovery, superior to the traditional photothermal membrane distillation systems, providing an alternative opportunity for sustainably alleviating the freshwater and energy shortage.

Abstract:Photocatalytic water splitting (PWS) is one of the promising hydrogen production technologies. Studying the operation characteristics of multi-energy coupling system based on photocatalytic hydrogen production is beneficial to the popularization and application of this technology. A novel zero-carbon emission system that integrates freshwater, hydrogen, and electricity co-generation driven by solar energy is developed in this paper. The integrated system comprises a multistage flash desalination (MSFD) subsystem, a PWS subsystem, and a fuel cell (FC) subsystem. Considering the inherent variability and intermittency of solar energy availability, an energy storage module is strategically implemented to ensure stable and reliable system operation. The detailed model of the complete integrated system is meticulously developed and refined using Aspen Plus software. Taking the meteorological data of Hainan, China as an example, the operational parameters of the system are designed. Parametric analyses are conducted on the system’s freshwater production, hydrogen generation, and electricity output. A comprehensive evaluation is made on the thermodynamic and environmental aspects of the integrated system. The results demonstrate that the system, designed to operate continuously throughout the year, achieves this with an initial storage capacity of 85 m3 for freshwater and 130 kmol for hydrogen. Over an annual cycle, MSFD subsystem produces approximately 1812.23 m3 of freshwater, while PWS subsystem utilizes 1560.00 m3 of this freshwater to generate 2830.82 kg of hydrogen. Subsequently, FC subsystem consumes approximately 2816.63 kg of hydrogen per year to generate 43,800 kWh of electricity, while the total annual electricity consumption for the integrated system is recorded at 1995.01 kWh. The system demonstrates an average annual energy efficiency of 58.4 % and exergy efficiency of 11.2 %, illustrating both effective energy use and conversion. Furthermore, the system’s operation leads to a significant reduction in carbon dioxide emissions, amounting to a total annual decrease of 31884.98 kg. Collectively, the significant contribution of this study is to emphasize the potential of autonomously operated joint systems through the synergistic utilization of renewable energy and hydrogen energy. The specific innovative zero-carbon emission system, driven by solar energy, provides a theoretical framework for the development of integrated strategies for the utilization of solar and hydrogen energy.

Abstract:This study combines the tidal current power generation system with seawater desalination and hydrogen production by concentrated seawater electrolysis, and proposes a comprehensive utilization mode of marine energy and seawater resources. Tidal turbines can provide sufficient power for islands or offshore facilities, while seawater desalination can supply adequate freshwater to islands. However, concentrated seawater, a byproduct of seawater desalination, is usually treated as waste and discharged back to the ocean. It thus becomes a pollution source and meanwhile causes a waste of chemical resources enriched in it, such as hydrogen, chlorine, and sodium. Therefore, this paper further studies the technologies for producing hydrogen and caustic soda by concentrated seawater electrolysis using the tidal current power generation system. By this means, marine energy resources are exploited for marine use, the seawater resource is properly recycled, and the establishment of offshore hydrogen supply stations may become possible.

Abstract:Biotic-abiotic hybrid photocatalytic system is an innovative strategy to capture solar energy. Diversifying solar energy conversion products and balancing photoelectron generation and transduction are critical to unravel the potential of hybrid photocatalysis. Here, we harvest solar energy in a dual mode for Cu2-xSe nanoparticles biomineralization and seawater desalination by integrating the merits of Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 and biogenic nanoparticles. Photoelectrons generated by extracellular Se0 nanoparticles power Cu2-xSe synthesis through two pathways that either cross the outer membrane to activate periplasmic Cu(II) reduction or are directly delivered into the extracellular space for Cu(I) evolution. Meanwhile, photoelectrons drive periplasmic Cu(II) reduction by reversing MtrABC complexes in S. oneidensis. Moreover, the unique photothermal feature of the as-prepared Cu2-xSe nanoparticles, the natural hydrophilicity, and the linking properties of bacterium offer a convenient way to tailor photothermal membranes for solar water production. This study provides a paradigm for balancing the source and sink of photoelectrons and diversifying solar energy conversion products in biotic-abiotic hybrid platforms.

Abstract:Photothermal desalination driven by solar energy has emerged as a promising strategy for freshwater and clean energy production. One of the great challenges in interfacial evaporation is simultaneous achievement of superior freshwater production, salt harvesting, and electricity generation in an evaporator. Herein, an all‐inclusive photothermal solar steam generator using high‐performance photothermic converting film is reported, featuring in interconnected fibrous network, broadband absorption, heat insulation, and unidirectional water transfer. The superior characteristics can readily form a constant salinity gradient in system during vaporization, not only realizing the spatial isolation of evaporation and salt crystallization zones to harvesting freshwater and salt separately, but more importantly achieving continuous electricity generation from salinity gradient power without trade‐offs. Such stable solar steam generator integrated with efficient photothermal converting material and rational structural design highlights the practical consideration toward solar distillation by deep desalination, which can not only sustainably achieve the freshwater and salt production, but collaboratively generate the electricity for emergency needs.

Abstract:Considered as one of the effective approaches to address the energy crisis and develop green and sustainable energy, the application of solar energy in multiple stages was investigated in this study. By designing a WS 2 /ZnIn 2 S 4 heterojunction, a multifunctional coupling system based on interfacial water evaporation technology was constructed. In this system, the water evaporation rate was 1.67 kgꞏm −2 ꞏh −1 , and the photocatalytic degradation efficiency of rhodamine B reached 96.5 %. Moreover, the electric energy output from thermoelectric conversion was innovatively in situ applied for photocatalytic hydrogen production, which increased the photocatalytic hydrogen production efficiency by five times, with a hydrogen production rate of 40.3 μmolꞏcm −2 ꞏh −1 . This study successfully integrated thermoelectric power generation, photocatalytic hydrogen production, and photocatalytic degradation of dye wastewater into an advanced solar-driven interface evaporation system, enabling the simultaneous conversion of solar energy into multiple forms of energy, improving solar energy utilization efficiency, which was of great significance for promoting the practical application of solar energy.

Abstract:Traditional photovoltaic-thermal systems achieve full-spectrum sunlight utilization while producing only lowgrade heat. This study reports an efficient PVT system designed for simultaneous hydrogen production and seawater desalination, in addition to high-efficiency electrical output. Specifically, Ag@SiO 2 /CoSO 4 -PG nanoparticle suspensions with varied loadings were prepared for photothermal and photoelectric conversion. Here, desalinated seawater can be directly utilized for electrolytic hydrogen production driven by photoelectric conversion module. System performance was evaluated across a broad range of conditions. The system exhibits peak photothermal and photoelectric conversion efficiencies of 45.57 % and 15.39 % respectively, when the nanoparticle loading is 80.00 mg/L. Using an 80.00 mg/L nanoparticle suspension filter, the system achieves a peak exergy efficiency of 60.71 % and an economic value enhancement of 75.9 % compared to a PV only system, when the worth factor w is 3. Under optimal operational conditions, the photo-hydrogen conversion efficiency reached 7.82 %. This study demonstrates an effective strategy for full spectrum solar energy conversion to hydrogen using sea water and provides a valuable guidance for future study.
Dynamic Regulation of Hydrogen Bonding Networks and Solvation Structures for Synergistic Solar-Thermal Desalination of Seawater and Catalytic Degradation of Organic Pollutants

Abstract:Although solar steam generation strategy is efficient in desalinating seawater, it is still challenging to achieve continuous solar-thermal desalination of seawater and catalytic degradation of organic pollutants. Herein, dynamic regulations of hydrogen bonding networks and solvation structures are realized by designing an asymmetric bilayer membrane consisting of a bacterial cellulose/carbon nanotube/Co2(OH)2CO3 nanorod top layer and a bacterial cellulose/Co2(OH)2CO3 nanorod (BCH) bottom layer. Crucially, the hydrogen bonding networks inside the membrane can be tuned by the rich surface -OH groups of the bacterial cellulose and Co2(OH)2CO3 as well as the ions and radicals in situ generated during the catalysis process. Moreover, both SO42- and HSO5- can regulate the solvation structure of Na+ and be adsorbed more preferentially on the evaporation surface than Cl-, thus hindering the de-solvation of the solvated Na+ and subsequent nucleation/growth of NaCl. Furthermore, the heat generated by the solar-thermal energy conversion can accelerate the reaction kinetics and enhance the catalytic degradation efficiency. This work provides a flow-bed water purification system with an asymmetric solar-thermal and catalytic membrane for synergistic solar thermal desalination of seawater/brine and catalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:Efficiently harnessing abundant and renewable solar energy for sustainable and continuous municipal sewage or industrial outlet water treatment to deal with water crisis has been an urgency for researchers in the past decades. Herein, a scalable and cost-effective solar steam device built up of surface-carbonized cane (CC) and Bi 2 WO 6 nanoflower photocatalyst is demonstrated, which exhibits high efficiency for concurrent waste water treatment and solar-to-water evaporation. CC is chosen as artificial core component in this system due to its nature-made periodic micro-/nanochannels, low heat conductivity, which contributes to extraordinary water transport, evaporation capacity and thermal management. Compared to natural cane, CC exhibits remarkably enhanced light absorption capacity and solar-to-water evaporation efficiency. Moreover, through the modification of Bi 2 WO 6 nanoflower, the system shows an optimized utilization of absorbed photons for high redox charge carriers in photocatalytic degradation and heat generation to promote the water treatment, leading to enhanced pollutant degradation efficiency. The steam generation performance reaches up to 1.417 kg·m −2 ·h −1 and solar-to-water evaporation efficiency of ~ 91.7% under 1 sun irradiation, which are among the highest values in the literatures. Continuous water purification and freshwater production from municipal sewage are also carried out in a home-made tandem system.

Abstract:High energy consumption and low salt removal rate are key barriers to realizing practical electrochemical seawater desalination processes. Here, we demonstrate a novel solar-driven redox flow desalination device with double photoelectrodes to achieve efficient desalination without electrical energy consumption. The device consists of three parts: one photoanode unit, one photocathode unit, and one redox flow desalination unit sandwiched between the two photoelectrode units. The photoelectrode units include a TiO 2 photoanode and a NiO photocathode sensitized with N719 dye, triiodide/iodide redox electrolyte, and graphite paper integrated electrodes decorated with 3,4-ethylene-dioxythiophene. Two salt feeds are located between two ferro/ferricyanide redox flow chambers. Under light illumination, high-quality freshwater is obtained from brackish water containing different concentrations of NaCl from 1000 to 12000 ppm with a high NaCl removal rate. The device can work in multiple desalination cycles without significant performance declines. Furthermore, natural seawater with an ionic conductivity of 53.45 mS cm −1 is desalinated to freshwater. This new design opens opportunities to realize efficient and practical solar-driven desalination processes.

Abstract:Effectively harnessing renewable and inexhaustible solar radiation for energy conversion has attracted significant research interest in the past decade. Solar thermal conversion, as a ubiquitous phenomenon, can be implemented to evaporate water and concurrently boost photocatalytic performance for addressing freshwater scarcity and energy crisis. Most recently, solar water evaporation accompanied by photocatalytic degradation, sterilization, and hydrogen production has been proposed as a promising avenue to endow new vitality into the field of clean water and energy production. Driven by the advances of rationally designed solar-powered functional materials, a large variety of photothermal-coupled photocatalysis technologies have been exploited. In this context, it is imperative to summarize the recent progress and discuss the challenges in this multidisciplinary field. Herein, we overview photothermal materials based on various fundamental principles and highlight emerging applications in the areas of solar water evaporation, water purification, and solar-driven energy production. Furthermore, the challenges and perspectives toward both fundamental research and practical applications are also proposed. It is envisioned that this review can provide insightful suggestions to further advance the development of integrated solar thermal driven water evaporation and photocatalytic systems to fulfill concurrent energy conversion and environmental applications.

Abstract:<p>Localized heating-based solar distillation has recently emerged as an efficient and facile way to generate freshwater out of saline water. Salt fouling, however, remains a fundamental challenge to stable operation of the desalination system, in particular for high-salinity brine. Here we demonstrate a solar-driven interfacial evaporation-based desalination structure, which achieves localized surface salt precipitation through mediating the horizontal salt concentration gradient within the printed paper-based solar absorber, to minimize salt fouling while maintaining heat localization. With optimized design, such desalination system achieves a stable evaporation efficiency of ~78% under 1100 W m<sup>−2</sup> solar illumination, and simultaneously generates drinkable water out of 10 wt% brine with a solar-to-water conversion efficiency more than 40% and NaCl salts with higher productivity over conventional bulk heating-based salt farm technology. This low-cost, environmentally-friendly, bifunctional desalination technology not only helps solve the salt fouling issue but also holds the potential to offer a new way to extract minerals from seawater.</p>

Abstract:The utilization of CO2, H2O, and solar energy is regarded as a sustainable route for converting CO2 into chemical feedstocks, paving the way for carbon neutrality and reclamation. However, the simultaneous photocatalytic CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation under non-sacrificial ambient conditions is still a significant challenge. Researchers have carried out extensive exploration and achieved dramatic developments in this area. In this review, we first primarily elucidate the principles of two half-reactions in the photocatalytic conversion of CO2 with H2O, i. e., CO2 reduction by the photo-generated electrons and protons, and H2O oxidation by the photo-generated holes without sacrificial agents. Subsequently, the strategies to promote two half-reactions are summarized, including the vacancy/facet/morphology design, adjacent redox site construction, and Z-scheme heterojunction development. Finally, we present the advanced in situ characterizations and future perspectives in this field. This review aims to provide fresh insights into effectively simultaneous photocatalytic CO2 reduction and H2O oxidation under non-sacrificial ambient conditions.
