Abstract:The rise in living standards has generated a demand for higher aquatic environmental quality. The microalgal community and the surrounding organic molecules, environmental factors and microorganisms, such as bacteria, are together defined as the phycosphere. The bacteria in the phycosphere can form consortia with microalgae through various forms of interaction. The study of the species in these consortia and their relative proportions is of great significance in determining the species and strains of stable algae that can be used in sewage treatment. This article summarizes the following topics: the interactions between microalgae and bacteria that are required to establish consortia; how symbiosis between algae and bacteria is established; microalgal competition with bacteria through inhibition and anti‐inhibition strategies; the influence of environmental factors on microalgal‐bacterial aggregates, such as illumination conditions, pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature and nutrient levels; the application of algal‐bacterial aggregates to enhance biomass production and nutrient reuse; and techniques for studying the community structure and interactions of algal‐bacterial consortia, such as microscopy, flow cytometry, and omics.

Abstract:Aquaculture is an important industry providing high-quality animal protein to humans, but it brings serious environmental pollutions, such as eutrophication of water bodies and the abuse of antibiotics. Microalgae cultivation, which can recover nutrients, release oxygen and yield value-added biomass, has been studied intensively as a promising biotechnology for aquaculture wastewater treatment and fish diet production. Herein, we introduce a novel concept of applying microalgae biotechnology in aquaculture by integrating wastewater remediation, biomass harvesting and aquatic animals rearing systems. We review recent progress in aspects of value-added algal species screening, algae cultivation systems design, nutrient recovery by algal-bacterial interactions, and biomass harvesting technologies. Finally, we discuss some problems, including bacterial contamination, unfavorable conditions in effluent and lack of technological assessment, which may hinder the application of microalgae biotechnology. It is expected that this paper could attract researchers' and technicians' attention to the microalgae-based pollution control and promote the development of ecofriendly aquaculture. Abstract:In the recent years, microalgae have captured researchers' attention as the alternative feedstock for various bioenergy production such as biodiesel, biohydrogen, and bioethanol. Cultivating microalgae in wastewaters to simultaneously bioremediate the nutrient-rich wastewater and maintain a high biomass yield is a more economical and environmentally friendly approach. The incorporation of algal–bacterial interaction reveals the mutual relationship of microorganisms where algae are primary producers of organic compounds from CO2, and heterotrophic bacteria are secondary consumers decomposing the organic compounds produced from algae. This review would provide an insight on the challenges and future development of algal–bacterial consortium and its contribution in promoting a sustainable route to greener industry. It is believed that microalgal-bacterial consortia will be implemented in the near-future for sub-sequential treatment of wastewater bioremediation, bioenergy production and CO2 fixation, promoting sustainability and making extraordinary advancement in life sciences sectors.

Abstract:Microalgae have been developed as promising candidates for bioenergy production, coupled with answering challenges related to water pollution and global warming. When combined with wastewater, microalgal biomass production could be freed from a strong dependence on freshwater and chemical nutrients, as well as achieve the additional advantage of wastewater reclamation. However, despite those dual benefits, certain limitations on the growing of algae in wastewater remain to be resolved, including the inevitable presence of bacteria in wastewater, which influences biomass productivity and quality in various ways. Pointing at microalgal-bacterial relationships, this study provides an updated review of the application of microalgal-bacterial consortia (MABC) to benefit biomass yield and harvest, and in wastewater remediation, focusing on the main interactions established between the microorganisms integrated within MABC and the factors influencing the behaviours of MABC. The challenges faced by the MABC biotechnology are also discussed, which are primarily rooted in undesirable bacteria that parasitically eat microalgal products and inhibit algal growth through nutrient competition, lysate exudation, or reducing the algal resistance to biotic stress. However, there is a lack of systematic studies on maintaining stable and effective operation of MABCs for wastewater cultivation and high-value bioproduct generation. Knowledge gaps are identified as including systematic information about the responses of MABC to culture conditions and wastewater-borne bacterial communities, and the metabolic mechanisms underpinning the interactions between algae and bacteria in wastewater. Further research focuses and methodologies are proposed in this review, making full use of the advent of omics and computational technology.

Abstract:Algae-bacteria consortia treatment has been found to be a promising method for the remediation of aqueous systems. Given the scope of previous reviews on algae-bacteria interactions, the sections on chemical signaling between algae and bacteria don't cover the current knowledge gap, and recent advances of algae-bacteria consortia in aqueous remediation don't explore the full depth. Accordingly, the specific aim of this review was to thoroughly screen and summarize recent peer-reviewed literature on (1) the mechanism of algal selection and enrichment in wastewater treatment; (2) interactions between algae and bacteria in ecological niche environments; (3) chemical signaling between algae and bacteria; (4) aqueous remediation using the algae-bacteria consortia; and (5) advanced treatment techniques combined with algae-bacteria systems for improved aqueous remediation. The main current challenges and future perspectives in algae-bacteria consortia wastewater treatment are proposed, including: (i) comprehensively establishing the network of interactions between algae and bacteria, especially quorum sensing and phycospheric interactions; (ii) developing a detailed understanding of the chemical exchange between microbial species based on molecular diffusion processes; (iii) tracking complex algae-bacteria interactions in aquatic environments using machine learning (ML), providing a potential tool for the design of beneficial and customizable synthetic microbial communities for wastewater treatment; (iv) integrating advanced treatment techniques (e.g., MBRs, UV photolysis and biological activated carbon) with algae-bacteria consortia systems, increasing the sustainability and applicability of treatment processes. Biological Approaches Integrating Algae and Bacteria for the Degradation of Wastewater Contaminants—A Review

Abstract:The traditional approach for biodegradation of organic matter in sewage treatment used a consortium of bacterial spp. that produce untreated or partially treated inorganic contaminants resulting in large amounts of poor-quality sludge. The aeration process of activated sludge treatment requires high energy. So, a sustainable technique for sewage treatment that could produce less amount of sludge and less energy demanding is required for various developed and developing countries. This led to research into using microalgae for wastewater treatment as they reduce concentrations of nutrients like inorganic nitrates and phosphates from the sewage water, hence reducing the associated chemical oxygen demand (COD). The presence of microalgae removes nutrient concentration in water resulting in reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD) and toxic heavy metals like Al, Ni, and Cu. Their growth also offers opportunity to produce biofuels and bioproducts from algal biomass. To optimize use of microalgae, technologies like high-rate algal ponds (HRAPs) have been developed, that typically use 22% of the electricity used in Sequencing Batch Reactors for activated sludge treatment with added economic and environmental benefits like reduced comparative operation cost per cubic meter, mitigate global warming, and eutrophication potentials. The addition of suitable bacterial species may further enhance the treatment potential in the wastewater medium as the inorganic nutrients are assimilated into the algal biomass, while the organic nutrients are utilized by bacteria. Further, the mutual exchange of CO 2 and O 2 between the algae and the bacteria helps in enhancing the photosynthetic activity of algae and oxidation by bacteria leading to a higher overall nutrient removal efficiency. Even negative interactions between algae and bacteria mediated by various secondary metabolites (phycotoxins) have proven beneficial as it controls the algal bloom in the eutrophic water bodies. Herein, we attempt to review various opportunities and limitations of using a combination of microalgae and bacteria in wastewater treatment method toward cost effective, eco-friendly, and sustainable method of sewage treatment.

Abstract:The bacteria-algae synergistic wastewater treatment process not only efficiently eliminates nutrients and absorbs heavy metals, but also utilizes photosynthesis to convert light energy into chemical energy, generating valuable bioresource. The study systematically explores the formation, algal species, and regulatory strategies of the bacterial-algal symbiosis system. It provides a detailed analysis of various interaction mechanisms, with a particular focus on nutrient exchange, signal transduction, and gene transfer. Additionally, the efficacy of the system in removing nitrogen, phosphorus, and heavy metals, as well as its role in CO2 reduction and bioresource recycling, is thoroughly elaborated. Potential future research of bacteria-algae cell factory producing bioenergy production, feed or fertilizers are summarized. This paper clearly presents effective strategies for efficiently removing pollutants, reducing carbon emissions, and promoting resource recycling in the field of wastewater treatment. It also provides recommendations for further research on utilizing microbial-algal symbiotic systems to remove novel pollutants from wastewater and extract value-added products from the resulting biomass.

Abstract:Recently, increasing interest has been placed in microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS) in the journey towards the energy and carbon neutrality of municipal wastewater treatment. Different from aerobic granular sludge, the performance of MBGS is mainly determined by the mutualism and symbiosis between coexisting microalgae and bacteria. It appears from the literature that most of studies on MBGS were conducted at small benchtop scales under controlled conditions with synthetic wastewater. Therefore, this article attempts to look into the major engineering gaps between the knowledge generated from numerous laboratory research works and the large-scale application of MBGS, including massive production of MBGS, type of bioreactor, effect of alternate photo and dark metabolisms on effluent quality, resource recovery from waste MBGS, etc. It is clearly demonstrated that MBGS is still at its infant stage, and more effort is strongly needed to identify the technological bottlenecks of full-scale applications, while providing corresponding engineering solutions.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewThe utilization of attached microalgae and bacteria to degrade wastewater has become a more promising treatment process to replace traditional methods. That is because the algae-bacteria biofilm can not only remove nutrients from the water but also achieve the effect of carbon fixation. Besides, the attached microalgae are easy to harvest and can be used for the processing of high value-added products. This paper reviews the knowledge of microalgae biofilm combined with bacteria to treat wastewater and provides insights into the bioremediation of the ecosystem by algae and bacteria.Recent FindingsDue to the photosynthesis of algae and the oxidative decomposition of bacteria, the symbiotic system of algae biofilm and bacteria from wastewater has significant advantages in harvesting and degradation. To further improve wastewater utilization efficiency and carbon fixation, it is necessary to understand the algae-bacteria symbiotic system of mechanism and influencing factors of nitrogen and phosphorus removal and carbon fixation. The photobioreactor for microalgae cultivation is gradually developed and optimized, laying a solid foundation for actual production and application.SummaryThe algae-bacteria symbiotic system is more effective compared to individual microalgae treatment since the algae-bacteria biofilm has better removal efficiency and adsorption capacity as well as easy to harvest. Abstract:Emergence of pollutants in wastewater, expensive cultivation of microalgae, and difficulties in industrial scale production are the main challenges for successful coupling of microalgae with wastewater. Nitrogen, carbon, and phosphorus in wastewater are deliberately consumed by microalgae and cyanobacteria for their growth and could act as green technology for wastewater treatment. In this review, the role and mechanistic approaches of microalgae and cyanobacteria for removal of various (in)organic compounds from wastewater have been thoroughly addressed. Distinct pathways have been reported for improving wastewater treatment technologies through large-scale cultivation of microalgal. The techno-economic feasibility and major commercial production challenges along with genetic engineering research have been addressed. A biorefinery approach with integrated biology, ecology, and engineering would lead to a feasible microalgal-based technology for various applications.Graphic abstract

Abstract:In the current global context marked by a growing population and rapid urbanization, there are pressing challenges related to shrinking arable land and the effective management of an ever-increasing volume of wastewater. The food industry, while holding the potential to address these challenges through improved techniques and exploring alternative dietary resources, is itself a significant contributor to these issues. Industry's operations demand substantial water and energy resources while generating a substantial volume of wastewater characterized by organic pollutants and nutrient richness. Microalgae-based wastewater treatment exhibits the capacity to reduce inorganic nutrient loads, sequester carbon dioxide, and minimize greenhouse gas emissions while inhibiting the proliferation of pathogenic bacteria. Therefore, an integrated approach that combines both microalgae and bacteria emerges as a comprehensive solution, addressing the challenges of reducing organic and inorganic waste simultaneously while leveraging their symbiotic contributions to biogeochemical cycling processes. By concurrently applying algae and bacteria, the wastewater management system can be significantly enhanced, thereby reducing the associated carbon footprint related to mechanical aeration for CO 2 and O 2 , which would be necessary if these organisms were cultivated independently. Additionally, this integrated system generates a substantial amount of residual microalgal biomass, which can play a pivotal role in biorefinery concepts, enhancing economic viability. The remaining biomass can also be utilized for fermentation to produce methane or ethanol, promoting sustainable development and a transition to a circular economy. This review paper outlines various methodologies for the simultaneous utilization of microalgae and bacteria in wastewater management.
Advanced wastewater treatment with microalgae-indigenous bacterial interactions

Abstract:Microalgal-indigenous bacterial wastewater treatment (MBWT) emerges as a promising approach for the concurrent removal of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). Despite its potential, the prevalent use of MBWT in batch systems limits its broader application. Furthermore, the success of MBWT critically depends on the stable self-adaptation and synergistic interactions between microalgae and indigenous bacteria, yet the underlying biological mechanisms are not fully understood. Here we explore the viability and microbial dynamics of a continuous flow microalgae-indigenous bacteria advanced wastewater treatment system (CFMBAWTS) in processing actual secondary effluent, with a focus on varying hydraulic retention times (HRTs). The research highlights a stable, mutually beneficial relationship between indigenous bacteria and microalgae. Microalgae and indigenous bacteria can create an optimal environment for each other by providing essential cofactors (like iron, vitamins, and indole-3-acetic acid), oxygen, dissolved organic matter, and tryptophan. This collaboration leads to effective microbial growth, enhanced N and P removal, and energy generation. The study also uncovers crucial metabolic pathways, functional genes, and patterns of microbial succession. Significantly, the effluent NH 4 + -N and P levels complied with the Chinese national Class-II, Class-V, Class-IA, and Class-IB wastewater discharge standards when the HRT was reduced from 15 to 6 h. Optimal results, including the highest rates of CO 2 fixation (1.23 g L −1 ), total energy yield (32.35 kJ L −1 ), and the maximal lipid (33.91 %) and carbohydrate (41.91 %) content, were observed at an HRT of 15 h. Overall, this study not only confirms the feasibility of CFMBAWTS but also lays a crucial foundation for enhancing our understanding of this technology and propelling its practical application in wastewater treatment plants.

Microalgae-based wastewater treatment technology can not only purify wastewater and solve environmental pollution problems but also use the nutrient elements in wastewater to produce algal biomass, which has attracted more and more attention. This work reviews the current status of microalgae bioremediation of wastewater, aiming to provide a reference for further research in this field.Recent FindingsMicroalgae have been proven to be used to treat municipal wastewater, agricultural wastewater, and industrial wastewater and can convert nutrients into biomass. In order to further improve the wastewater treatment efficacy and algal biomass productivity, it is necessary to understand the mechanism of microalgae to remove nutrients and pollutants from wastewater. Currently, open ponds and enclosed photobioreactors are used for large-scale cultivation of microalgae, and various harvesting technologies are developed to achieve low-cost capture of microalgae as much as possible. Microalgae are rich in pigments, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, and antioxidants and can produce a variety of value-added products, making this biotechnology more cost-effective.SummaryThis review discusses the purification efficiencies of microalgae on wastewater from different sources and introduces the mechanism and influencing factors by which microalgae remove carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, heavy metals, and antibiotics in details. Abstract:The antibiotic resistance induced by the release of antibiotics to the environment has urged research towards developing effective technologies for antibiotic removal from wastewater. Traditional technologies such as activated sludge processes are not effective for antibiotic removal. Recently, microalgae-based technology has been explored as a potential alternative for the treatment of wastewater containing antibiotics by adsorption, accumulation, biodegradation, photodegradation, and hydrolysis. In this review, the toxicities of antibiotics on microalgae, the mechanisms of antibiotic removal by microalgae, and the integration of microalgae with other technologies such as ultraviolet irradiation (photocatalysis), advanced oxidation, and complementary microorganism degradation for antibiotic removal were discussed. The limitations of current microalgae-based technology and future research needs were also discussed.

Abstract:Soil degradation, overuse of chemical fertilizer, and biodiversity loss are serious problems challenging the sustainable development of modern agriculture. In recent years, owing to the advantages of algae biotechnology in nutrients recovery and soil improvement, the integration of algae‐based wastewater remediation and algal bio‐fertilizer production is emerging into the limelight. In this work, we emphasize on the progresses achieved in the fields of biomass production by algae cultivation in wastewater and application of algal bio‐fertilizers. Particularly, three types of algal bio‐fertilizers, including slow‐release bio‐fertilizer, nitrogen‐fixing cyanobacteria, and liquid bio‐fertilizer, widely evaluated and utilized in agriculture are introduced.To prevent the overly optimistic prediction of algal bio‐fertilizer in a real‐world application, we point out the challenges and technical defects, such as presence of new pollution factors in wastewater, high cost of algal biomass, contamination of algal biomass in wastewater, low productivity of algae and valuable components, high water consumption, and potential threats of cyanobacteria to environment, that prevent the concept of integrating algae‐based wastewater remediation and algal bio‐fertilizer production from becoming a reality. Based on our knowledge and experience, potential solutions to the aforementioned problems are discussed in depth. It is expected that the emerging technologies of algae‐based wastewater remediation for bio‐fertilizer production will bring human beings into a new era of environmentally‐friendly, high‐yield, and resource‐recycling agriculture.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:<p>This article is in the hope to open a fundamental discussion on what should future municipal wastewater treatment process be. A paradigm shift of treatment technology from present single functionality of removing to multiple-functionality of synergetic water-resource-energy recovery and carbon neutral for maximizing both environmental and economic sustainability. However, the current treatment technologies could hardly meet such requirements. It is elucidated in this article that a microalgal-bacterial granular sludge process could offer a promising option for achieving the multiple goals of municipal wastewater reclamation including energy generation, resource recovery and carbon reduction.</p>

Abstract:The water resource crisis and concerns with environmental pollution prompt the necessity to upgrade conventional wastewater treatment processes. The microalgae-based wastewater treatment process has shown many advantages that can fulfill the stricter demands for improved wastewater treatment. Microalgae cultivation can be carried out in different photobioreactors and under different operational conditions. The cultivation of the microalgae biomass provides the bioremediation of some targeted pollutants through uptake/digestion or biosorption, resulting in treated effluent and the production of biomass. This paper reviews the progress in microalgae-biotechnology for industrial wastewater treatment. A brief overview of microalga types/classification, the cultivation photobioreactors type, and conditions was first provided. Next, a comprehensive review of the bioremediation of industrial wastewater, including distillery, heavy metals, textiles, and emerging contaminants, was provided. Finally, perspectives on the potential scale-up of the technology and some critical considerations were also discussed.

Abstract:Although microalgae can serve as an appropriate alternative feedstock for biofuel production, the high microalgal cultivation cost has been a major obstacle for commercializing such attempts. One of the feasible solution for cost reduction is to couple microalgal biofuel production system with wastewater treatment, as microalgae are known to effectively eliminate a variety of nutrients/pollutants in wastewater, such as nitrogen/phosphate, organic carbons, VFAs, pharmaceutical compounds, textile dye compounds, and heavy metals. This review aims to critically discuss the feasibility of microalgae-based wastewater treatment, including the strategies for strain selection, the effect of wastewater types, photobioreactor design, economic feasibility assessment, and other key issues that influence the treatment performance. The potential of microalgae-bacteria consortium for treatment of industrial wastewaters is also discussed. This review provides useful information for developing an integrated wastewater treatment with microalgal biomass and biofuel production facilities and establishing efficient co-cultivation for microalgae and bacteria in such systems.
