Abstract:The 15 species of small carnivorous marsupials that comprise the genus Antechinus exhibit semelparity, a rare life-history strategy in mammals where synchronised death occurs after one breeding season. Antechinus males, but not females, age rapidly (demonstrate organismal senescence) during the breeding season and show promise as new animal models of ageing. Some antechinus species are also threatened or endangered. Here, we report a chromosome-level genome of a male yellow-footed antechinus Antechinus flavipes. The genome assembly has a total length of 3.2 Gb with a contig N50 of 51.8 Mb and a scaffold N50 of 636.7 Mb. We anchored and oriented 99.7% of the assembly on seven pseudochromosomes and found that repetitive DNA sequences occupy 51.8% of the genome. Draft genome assemblies of three related species in the subfamily Phascogalinae, two additional antechinus species (A. argentus and A. arktos) and the iteroparous sister species Murexia melanurus, were also generated. Preliminary demographic analysis supports the hypothesis that climate change during the Pleistocene isolated species in Phascogalinae and shaped their population size. A transcriptomic profile across the A. flavipes breeding season allowed us to identify genes associated with aspects of the male die-off. The chromosome-level A. flavipes genome provides a steppingstone to understanding an enigmatic life-history strategy and a resource to assist the conservation of antechinuses.

Abstract:The carnivorous marsupial genus Antechinus is well known for exhibiting semelparity – every year, all males die after the 1–3 week breeding period. Death of males potentially presents an opportunity for cheap energy gain via cannibalism for still-living male and female antechinuses. Cannibalistic behaviour has been reported in some dasyurids, but direct observations in the wild are rare. Here, we document observations of a mainland dusky antechinus ( Antechinus mimetes mimetes ) eating a recently deceased conspecific during the breeding period at Point Lookout, New England National Park, New South Wales. This provides rare field-based evidence of opportunistic cannibalism in a semelparous mammal.

Abstract:Sperm cells are the most morphologically diverse cells across animal taxa. Within species, sperm and ejaculate traits have been suggested to vary with the male's competitive environment, e.g., level of sperm competition, female mating status and quality, and also with male age, body mass, physiological condition, and resource availability. Most previous studies have based their conclusions on the analysis of only one or a few ejaculates per male without investigating differences among the ejaculates of the same individual. This masks potential ejaculate-specific traits. Here, we provide data on the length, quantity, and viability of sperm ejaculated by wingless males of the ant Cardiocondyla obscurior. Males of this ant species are relatively long-lived and can mate with large numbers of female sexuals throughout their lives. We analyzed all ejaculates across the individuals' lifespan and manipulated the availability of mating partners. Our study shows that both the number and size of sperm cells transferred during copulations differ among individuals and also among ejaculates of the same male. Sperm quality does not decrease with male age, but the variation in sperm number between ejaculates indicates that males need considerable time to replenish their sperm supplies. Producing many ejaculates in a short time appears to be traded-off against male longevity rather than sperm quality.

Abstract:In many social hymenopterans, workers of different ages engage in different tasks; younger workers remain inside the nest as intranidal workers, while older workers go outside the nest as extranidal workers (i.e., age polyethism). Previous studies have shown that ovarian activity is diminished in old, extranidal workers, but it remains unclear whether workers' reproductive ability persists for life or whether they exhibit post-reproductive lifespans. In this study, we investigated the age-dependence of worker reproductive ability in a monomorphic ponerine ant Diacamma cf. indicum . In Diacamma ants, all females in a colony have reproductive ability, but effective reproduction is limited to one or a few dominant females, and the remaining females act as sterile helpers. Using long-term laboratory rearing, we investigated whether worker reproductive ability lasts throughout a worker's lifetime. The ages of workers were accurately tracked, and the reproductive ability of young and old workers was examined by creating several gamergate-less sub-colonies. Results showed that at least one individual in each sub-colony developed ovaries, even in the sub-colonies that solely consisted of very old workers (> 252 days old). Interestingly, in the presence of younger workers, old workers rarely showed ovarian development. Besides age, we found a positive correlation between the amount of fat (i.e., nutritional condition) and ovarian development in old workers. Our data suggest that reproductive activity of old workers is low but maintained throughout their life in Diacamma .

Abstract:Reproduction in mammals requires distinct cycles of ovulation, fertilization, pregnancy, and lactation often interspersed with periods of anoestrus when breeding does not occur. Macropodids, the largest extant species of marsupials, the kangaroos and wallabies, have a very different reproductive strategy to most eutherian mammals whereby young are born at a highly altricial stage of development with the majority of development occurring over a lengthy lactation period. Furthermore, the timings of ovulation and birth in some species occurs within a very short interval of each other (sometimes hours). Female swamp wallabies have an oestrous cycle shorter than their pregnancy length and were, therefore, speculated to mate and form a new embryo before birth thereby supporting two conceptuses at different stages of pregnancy. To confirm this, we used high-resolution ultrasound to monitor reproduction in swamp wallabies during pregnancy. Here, we show that females ovulate, mate, and form a new embryo prepartum while still carrying a full-term fetus in the contralateral uterus. This embryo enters embryonic diapause until the newborn leaves the pouch 9 mo later. Thus, combined with embryonic diapause, females are continuously pregnant and lactating at the same time throughout their reproductive life, a unique reproductive strategy that completely blurs the normal staged system of reproduction in mammals.

Abstract:Ren conducted year-round observations on sexual behaviors of Sichuan snub-nosed monkeys in Shanghai Wild Animal Park from May 2000 to May 2001, which confirmed quantitatively that the species is a rigorous seasonal breeder with a single birth season between late March and early June. Lactation continues until the infant reaches about 1.5 years or it dies. Accordingly, the interbirth interval is ca. 18–20 mo. The results also confirm that females regulate the timing of reproduction. To avoid mating competition their conception times differ from one another, and they conceive between October and December. Three focal females maintained proceptive activities with significant durations due to their different ages and mating choice. If new babies died in the same year the mothers resumed sexual activity on different days. Apart from female peak mating times there is no significant difference among them regarding the regularity of their sexual activities. Temporal differences in birth peaks at different locations might be due to latitude.

Abstract:Abstract Age at mating is one of the most important factors that affect mating success and reproductive fitness in insects. The present study investigated how the age of the two sexes at mating determined mating success, reproductive fitness and longevity in Phauda flammans (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Phaudidae), a serious pest of Ficus spp. trees in South and Southeast Asia. The study may provide basic knowledge for the development of mating disruption programs using sex pheromones to control this pest. The species is monandrous and its adults live for only 4–5 d. We show that delayed mating significantly lowered mating success in both sexes, with males being more severely affected than females. Mating delay also reduced reproductive outputs of both sexes but females were more negatively affected than males. We did not find any effect of delayed mating on longevity of either sex. Our findings suggest that mating disruption with sex pheromones can be an effective method to delay mating in P. flammans, reducing reproductive success and thus limit population growth.

Abstract:Mating young can cause early death due to resulting energetic depletion, physical damage, or sexually transmitted disease, whereas waiting too long to mate has the risks of suffering reproductive senescence or death before finding a mate. The ideal age for reproducing also depends on the mate's age, as young partners may be more aggressive or less fertile and experienced than mature partners. Therefore, longevity and lifetime reproductive success depend on the combination rather than the individual effects of self- and the mate's mating age, but this idea has not been formally explored. Here I evaluated lifetime reproductive success and longevity in males and females mated at different ages (i.e., young or mature) with mates of the same or a different age. As a study system, I used the horned dung beetle Euoniticellus intermedius , a classic study subject with intense sexual selection for male horn size, which is a reliable indicator of male strength and condition. For both males and females, mating young severely reduced lifespan, independent of the mate's age, body, or male horn size. Due to reduced survival, females, but not males, had fewer offspring, with a stronger fitness effect suffered by mature than by young females. Regarding reproductive success, mature males and females had 3.4 and 1.6 times more offspring, respectively, when mated with mature than when mated with young partners, independently of their own body and horn sizes. Reproductive success of young males or females was not sensitive to the mate's age. These results indicate that the optimal onset of reproduction and the ideal reproductive investment are highly dependent on the combination of self- and the mate's age.

Abstract:Abstract Over their lifetime, individuals may use different behavioural strategies to maximize their fitness. Some behavioural traits may be consistent among individuals over time (i.e., ‘personality’ traits) resulting in an individual behavioural phenotype with different associated costs and benefits. Understanding how behavioural traits are linked to lifetime fitness requires tracking individuals over their lifetime. Here, we leverage a long-term study on a multi-year living species (maximum lifespan ~ 10 years) to examine how docility (an individual’s reaction to trapping and handling) may contribute to how males are able to maximize their lifetime fitness. Cape ground squirrels are burrowing mammals that live in social groups, and although males lack physical aggression and territoriality, they vary in docility. Males face high predation risk and high reproductive competition and employ either of two reproductive tactics (‘natal’ or ‘band’) which are not associated with different docility personalities. We found that although more docile individuals sired more offspring on an annual basis, docility did not affect an individual’s long-term (lifetime) reproductive output. Survival was not associated with docility or body condition, but annual survival was influenced by rainfall. Our findings suggest that although docility may represent a behavioural strategy to maximize fitness by possibly playing a role in female-male associations or female mate-choice, variations in docility within our study population is likely maintained by other environmental drivers. However, individual variations in behaviours may still contribute as part of the ‘tool kit’ individuals use to maximize their lifetime fitness.

Abstract:Abstract In many species of eusocial Hymenoptera, workers exhibit a division of labour based on age, wherein young workers remain protected within the nest before transitioning to foraging activities. These changes in tasks and in external stress exposure are accompanied by physiological and anatomical modifications. Although pigmentation changes in the exoskeleton are well documented in ants, limited information is available on muscle morphology and developmental changes in the adult cuticle. Here, we investigated the alterations in the exoskeleton and thoracic muscles across different age groups of the clonal ant Platythyrea punctata, in which reproduction is monopolized by one or a few dominant workers. Our findings revealed a significant thickening of the cuticle and muscle fibres in young workers during the intranidal period, reaching a final stage in forager individuals. We further tested the influence of reproductive status on body development and found variations only in muscle fibres between reproductive and nonreproductive individuals. This suggests that dominant individuals allocate resources in egg-laying by minimizing other metabolic costs. These findings shed light on how eusociality profoundly alters selection pressures and results in temporal shifts in individual development. This strategy probably provides advantages to colonies by minimizing nutritional waste and optimizing resource allocation.

Abstract:Erect-crested penguins are the least studied of all penguins. They breed on two isolated subantarctic island groups, the Antipodes and Bounty Islands. Sporadic nest counts indicate a dramatic decline in numbers of erect-crested penguins over the last 50 years. Here we present data from a study undertaken in 1998 on the breeding biology, behavior and hormones of erect-crested penguins. It represents, even today, by far the most detailed data available on this species. The penguins exhibited extreme reversed egg-size dimorphism, whereby the first-laid A-egg was much smaller than the second-laid B-egg. A-eggs were lost before (42.3%) or on (37.8%) the day the B-egg was laid, and none survived more than 7 days after that. The penguins were in a low state of reproductive readiness, as evidenced by low levels of copulation, fighting, and testosterone in males during the courtship/laying period when, curiously, plasma levels of testosterone were at least as high in females. The laying interval (5.4 days) is the longest recorded for any penguin species, and incubation was highly variable until clutch completion. Most nests (91.2%) contained no nesting material and eggs were laid directly onto the ground. A-eggs were lost mainly by rolling out of the nest. However, even when prevented from doing so by an experimental manipulation, A-eggs survived no longer than those in control nests. Testosterone levels in males increased after clutch completion, when they remained in attendance at the nest for up to 13 days, despite females assuming most of the incubation duties. The bills of males were significantly larger than those of females and probably help with guarding the nest. We discuss explanations for obligate brood reduction in crested penguins and the options for conservation in light of our census results, which indicate that this enigmatic penguin species could be in trouble.

Abstract:In central and southern Australia, S. crassicaudata is a widespread species which shows morphological and biochemical variation throughout its range. A laboratory colony was established from wild-caught animals from central, southern and south-eastern populations. The origin of wild-caught females or the parentage of laboratory-bred females did not affect their response to any of the investigated factors influencing reproduction. Very few females produced litters after they had reached 30 months of age. The colony was maintained for nearly 10 years in one artificially illuminated room. The lighting schedule was usually 16L : 8D, but at approximately 6-monthly intervals the animals were subjected to 3 weeks of 8L : 16D. Significantly more litters were born in pairings that had experienced short days than in those continuously exposed to long days. Oestrous cycles ceased in the 8L : 16D periods and resumed at about 20-30 days after the onset of 16L : 8D in many females, although some took longer to come into oestrus. Two of 27 females did not come into oestrus within 88 days, and, of the 25 females that came into oestrus, five did not ovulate. Pathological conditions in the reproductive system were rare. Most litters were born within the first 6 weeks of pairs being formed. Females which had produced one litter were more likely to produce a second litter when returned to the father of their first litter than when caged with a different male. When two females were caged with one male, one or occasionally both females produced a litter. Breeding in response to onset of long days is not consistent with the opportunistic breeding of many desert animals.

Mitochondrial maintenance is involved in the exceptional longevity of reproductive queens of the eusocial ant Lasius niger

Abstract:Most social insects are characterized by a wide disparity in life-history traits between individuals of the same species. Sterile workers live for months or years while queens may live for decades. Theories of ageing emphasise the importance of metabolism and oxidative stress in explaining longevity, with mitochondrial bioenergetics standing at the crossroads of energy and reactive oxygen species production. Studying mitochondrial functioning therefore takes on its full relevance in determining the nature of the mechanisms that explain the contrasting longevities between insect social castes. We addressed this question in an eusocial species, the black garden ant Lasius niger. We found that caste differences in mitochondrial bioenergetics and oxidative balance only partially match with predictions of the oxidative stress theory of ageing. Long-lived queens were characterized by a lower metabolic rate, lower mitochondrial density yet not necessarily lower levels of mitochondrial oxidative damages. Despite this, queens did not show reduced ATP content; rather, they even possessed a higher energy load in their mitochondria. Converging clues suggested better mitochondrial maintenance in queen ants, with enhanced dynamics of mitochondrial fission and fusion and a more marked expression of mitochondrial enzymes of the Krebs cycle. Overall, our data paves the way for studying deeper into how the rate of ATP production per mitochondria is related to the investment in mitochondrial and somatic cellular maintenance, and whether it has specifically been selected as a key mechanism in defining the still unexplained paradoxical longevity of the queen reproductive caste.

Abstract:A long-term study of a population of desert seed-eating ant colonies of the red harvester ant, Pogonomyrmex barbatus , in New Mexico, USA, shows that a colony can live for 20–30 years—the lifespan of its founding queen. A colony’s collective behaviour shifts in the course of its life history. These changes, generated by social interactions within the colony, adjust the behaviour of the colony as it grows older and larger, in response to its environment and neighbouring colonies. A worker lives only a year and performs different tasks as it ages, in response to interactions with other workers and the local surroundings. A colony’s behaviour changes—becoming more stable and consistent—as the colony grows older, with more ants to participate in social interactions. A neighbourhood of colonies, often of similar age, grows old together. Colonies differ in how they regulate foraging behaviour collectively to manage water loss. These differences influence how foragers of neighbouring colonies partition foraging area. In a harsh but stable environment, the gradual behavioural shifts over a colony’s lifespan allow it to adjust to slow changes in the composition of its neighbourhood and in environmental conditions. Age-dependent male mating tactics in a spider mite-A life-history perspective

Abstract:Males often fight with rival males for access to females. However, some males display nonfighting tactics such as sneaking, satellite behavior, or female mimicking. When these mating tactics comprise a conditional strategy, they are often thought to be explained by resource holding potential (RHP), that is, nonfighting tactics are displayed by less competitive males who are more likely to lose a fight. The alternative mating tactics, however, can also be explained by life-history theory, which predicts that young males avoid fighting, regardless of their RHP, if it pays off to wait for future reproduction. Here, we test whether the sneaking tactic displayed by young males of the two-spotted spider mite can be explained by life-history theory. We tested whether young sneaker males survive longer than young fighter males after a bout of mild or strong competition with old fighter males. We also investigated whether old males have a more protective outer skin-a possible proxy for RHP-by measuring cuticle hardness and elasticity using nanoindentation. We found that young sneaker males survived longer than young fighter males after mild male competition. This difference was not found after strong male competition, which suggests that induction of sneaking tactic is affected by male density. Hardness and elasticity of the skin did not vary with male age. Given that earlier work could also not detect morphometric differences between fighter and sneaker males, we conclude that there is no apparent increase in RHP with age in the mite and age-dependent male mating tactics in the mite can be explained only by life-history theory. Because it is likely that fighting incurs a survival cost, age-dependent alternative mating tactics may be explained by life-history theory in many species when reproduction of old males is a significant factor in fitness.

Abstract:Significance Life history theory predicts that organisms can increase their fitness either by producing many offspring or by producing fewer, high-quality offspring. This “quality–quantity” trade-off is expected to be particularly salient for species such as humans that have extended offspring investment, but it may be obscured by cultural mechanisms, such as provisioning. We found strong evidence for quality–quantity trade-offs in chimpanzees, a closely related species with extensive maternal investment. Immature wild chimpanzees that were relatively young when their next sibling was born remained smaller throughout their juvenile years. Chimpanzee mothers with more resources appear to invest in faster reproduction rather than in more robust offspring. This strategy may have set the stage for rapid reproduction and postweaning investment in the human species.

Abstract:Northern quolls typically exhibit a facultatively semelparous lifestyle with male survival rates usually between 0% and 12.5% in northern Australia. Here, we observed 50% of males living into their second year in a Pilbara population, potentially due to reduced breeding‐related stress caused by low female abundance and increased rainfall. Males of the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus) are facultatively semelparous, often dying following their first breeding season. This is often driven by high breeding costs: males travel and mate extensively in breeding season, resulting in reduced body condition. Annual post‐breeding survival rates for male northern quolls have been recorded between 0% and 12.5% across their range in northern Australia. We highlight an observed 50% survival rate of male northern quolls (3 of 6) living into their second year in a Pilbara mining landscape. High male survival here may be attributed to above average rainfall in the landscape and reduced breeding opportunities, due to low female abundance—likely driven by large amounts of unfavourable mining land. This likely led to lower hormonal stress associated with breeding for males, as well as increased resource availability. Given northern quoll population persistence is highly dependent on breeding success, high survival of male northern quolls may inadvertently stabilize populations if they can breed again in a second year, though this is yet to be observed in the Pilbara region. Nevertheless, semelparity of male northern quolls likely varies with environmental and demographic factors, demonstrating that northern quoll populations may be resilient to disturbance in an unpredictable semi‐arid environment.
