Abstract:To improve the calibration efficiency and accuracy of line structured light sensor, a plane checkerboard and concentric circle complementary line structured light calibration system was designed integrating with self-backlighting and pose-adjustable functions. Based on the geometric relationship between the real projection position of the concentric circle center and the center of projection ellipse, the nonlinear optimized compensation model for eccentric error was established, which precisely determined the eccentric error compensation position of the circle center under the perspective projection. Compared with the traditional calibration method, the proposed method reduced the re-projection error by 84.7% and effectively solved the problem of high-precision calibration for eccentric error compensation of circular markers. By combining the plane passing through the optical center and the center line of the light bar with the target plane in the camera coordinate system, the coordinate information of the spatial intersection lines was obtained for many times to increase the feature points, and the problem of lower calibration precision of plane fitting due to the fewer feature points was solved by using the least square method to fit the optic plane equation. In complex environments, the average error of the outer diameter of the large-size grinding wheel is 0.005 1 mm measured by repeated experiments, and the results show that the designed calibration system has certain precision,simplicity, and practicability.

Abstract:Multi-line structured light three-dimensional (3D) scanning measurement system enables to obtain the richer 3D profile data of the object simultaneously during one frame, ensuring high accuracy while structured light is deformed for the modulation by the object. Nevertheless, current calibration methods cannot fully take advantage of its high precision. In this paper, a fast and high-accuracy 3D measurement system based on multi-line lasers with a spatially precise structure via integrating a diffraction grating was proposed. This helps achieve precise calibration results of the light planes by introducing spatial constraint relations of the diffractive light, thus improving measurement accuracy. The operating principle and the workflow of the proposed system were described in detail. The measurement accuracy of the developed prototype was verified through contrastive experiments. At a working distance of 400 mm, the results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) of the proposed system is 0.083 mm, which is improved by 37.6% compared to the traditional calibration method of light planes for the ranging system. The system utilizing a grating that facilitates the integration of the device has great application value.

Abstract:Laser and visual imagery have been broadly utilized in computer vision and mobile robotics applications because these sensors provide complementary information. Since the single-point laser range finder can provide depth information of a single pixel in the observed image, its price and size is very suitable for handheld devices or very lightweight robotic platforms. So the combination of a single-point laser range finder and a camera has become increasingly useful in recent report and industrial applications. In this paper, we propose two accurate calibration methods for determining the position and direction of the laser range finder relative to the camera. Furthermore, we can accomplish calibration even without observing the laser spot in camera image. We evaluate the two methods through experiments which demonstrate their efficiency and high reliability.

Abstract:Line structured light vision sensor (LSLVS) with given movement is widely used in many fields of industry for simple structure, fast scanning speed, and low power consumption. One of the applications is rotating LSLVS as a 3-D LiDAR, which is applicable to tasks with limited power consumption, such as the planetary exploration task. Accurate calibration between the LSLVS and the rotating platform is essential to such system, which is difficult for the characteristics of the movement and the problem of time synchronization. In this work, we aim to perform the spatial and the temporal calibration for the rotating LSLVS in two stages. In the first stage, the extrinsic parameters are calculated based on the image data captured in different orientations, during which the LSLVS remains static to avoid errors caused by time offset. Also, multiple constraints are added in this stage in order to have the high accuracy and robustness of calibration. Then, in the second stage, with the extrinsic parameters being precisely calibrated, the temporal calibration is performed by minimizing the reprojection errors of visual feature points, which indicates the asynchronization between the trajectory profile of the LSLVS recorded by the rotating platform and retrieved from images. The observability of the extrinsic parameters and the time delay are analyzed in detail. Simulated and realistic experiments show the competitive accuracy and robustness of the proposed method.
A Long-focus Camera and Telemetry LiDAR Calibration for Rapid Transit Equipment.

Abstract:The fused use of the long-focus camera and telemetry LiDAR is necessary for advanced long-distance detection requirements in autonomous driving vehicles and unmanned subways, and the extrinsic parameter calibration is a precondition for multi-sensor fusion use. However, the inaccuracy of long-focus camera detection and low accuracy of data association between LiDAR-camera make the calibration a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel calibration method that treat the detection poses as variables in the optimization framework, which significantly reduces the impact of detection errors on calibration accuracy. Furthermore, we construct 3 error terms to obtain better estimation of the variables, and the designed error terms only require plane-to-plane data association, avoiding incorrect data association that leads to failure in extrinsic parameter estimation. Then we made a full comparison with other methods through real-world experiments, which showed that our method achieves the best calibration result.
Rapid calibration based on SQP algorithm for coordinate frame of localizers

Abstract:A rapid calibration method based on sequential quadratic programming (SQP) optimization algorithm for coordinate frame was researched, to address the calibration problems of movable numerical controlled localizers adopted in airplane digital assembly system.When the device was at zero position, the positions of marker points preset on localizers in device coordinate were the theoretical positions and marked as device coordinate frame.The singular value decomposition method was used to solve the least squares model of deviation between actual and theoretical values of marker points;zero calibration was performed.In the case of marker points deviate caused by the localizers move and reposition, SQP optimization algorithm was used for rapid calibration of coordinate frame.The comparison results of zero calibration and rapid calibration of coordinate frame show that rapid calibration can reduce the times of laser tracker measurement;errors arising in station movement was eliminated;the positioning accuracy of localizer can be guaranteed as high as 0.05 mm with the calibration efficiency being improved, which meets the high accuracy requirement in localizing system of large airplane digital assembly.

Abstract:We present a new method for calibrating a single-point laser rangefinder and single camera because the combination of a cheap single-point laser range finder (LRF) and a camera has become increasingly helpful in recent industrial applications. In order to effectively use the date from the camera and LRF, it is important to know their relative position and orientation from each other. In this paper, a robust extrinsic calibration method for determining the position and direction of the LRF with respect to the camera is proposed. Due to the spot of the single-point LRF we commonly use is mostly invisible, infrared camera is utilized to detect laser spot and then establish the position relationship between visible light camera and infrared camera to calibrate the extrinsic parameters. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can calibrate the extrinsic parameters with high precision and effectively.

Abstract:LiDAR-camera calibration is a precondition for many multi-sensor systems that fuse data from LiDAR and camera. However, the constraint from common field of view and the requirement for time synchronization make the calibration a challenging problem. In this paper, we propose a novel LiDAR-camera calibration method aiming to eliminate these two constraints. Specifically, we capture a scan of 3-D LiDAR when both the environment and the sensors are stationary, then move the camera to reconstruct the 3-D environment using the sequentially obtained images. Finally, we align 3-D visual points to the laser scan based on a tightly couple graph optimization method to calculate the extrinsic parameter between LiDAR and camera. Under this design, the configuration of these two sensors is free from the common field-of-view constraint due to the extended view from the moving camera. In addition, we also eliminate the requirement for time synchronization as we only use the single scan of laser data when the sensors are stationary. We theoretically derive the conditions of minimal observability for our method and prove that the accuracy of calibration is improved by collecting more observations from multiple scattered calibration targets. In addition, the proposed method is beneficial to not only plane measurement error-based calibration targets, such as chessboards, but also other point measurement error-based calibration targets, such as boxes and polygonal boards. We validate our method on both simulation and real-world data sets. Experiments show that our method achieves higher accuracy than other comparable methods, which is in accordance with our theoretical analysis.

Abstract:The laser triangulation scanning system (LTSS) is widely employed in three-dimensional (3D) measurement fields owing to its high measurement accuracy. However, due to the limitations of the exploited motion, the traditional LTSS fails to be satisfactory for certain precise and efficient industrial applications. In this paper, a new multi-line laser triangulation scanning system (MLTSS) via integrating a rotary diffraction grating was proposed to address this problem. The image sequence of the divergent laser lines with variable angles on the object can be captured as the grating rotates. This enables to obtain the multiple profiles simultaneously during one frame. A novel method to distinguish laser lines in a single frame which enhances the measurement range was described. The measurement principle and workflow of the proposed system are explained in detail. The calibration algorithm of light planes of the proposed system utilizing the equivalent grating equation is simplified compared to the traditional algorithm. The developed setup and the measured object remain stationary throughout the whole scanning, which relieves the mechanical error caused by the motion. Moreover, the utilized grating facilitates to miniaturize the device. The experiments demonstrate the validity of the proposed system.

Abstract:This article presents the optimization of system design and calibration algorithm for light detection and ranging (LiDAR) imager based on the single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD) image sensor. The supply voltage and the gating high-voltage driving circuit of the SPAD are optimized based on the theoretical analysis and experimental data to improve the trigger times of the SPAD for the laser echo. The real-time calibration algorithm is realized in a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to obtain the flight time and improve the measurement reliability. A 10-bit time- and area-efficient shifted interframe multievent histogram and a bubbling-based peak detection algorithm are used to calculate flight time, which requires the memory as low as 16 times smaller than storing complete histogram if the pixel values are coded on up to 10 bits and can detect up to four different targets simultaneously without increasing the measurement time. The performance of different kinds of background noise measurement methods is analyzed based on experimental data, which shows that the measurement results are more accurate with the increase of time-to-digital converter (TDC) event detection ability. The proposed crosstalk suppression algorithm based on the LiDAR transmission function can reduce optical crosstalk between adjacent pixels to improve the measurement reliability of the LiDAR imager. The LiDAR imager is presented as capable of measuring a 10-m range with 70-Klux background noise and a $30^{\circ } \times 45^{\circ }$ field of view.
Design and Calibration of a Fast 3D Scanning LADAR

Abstract:A fast 3D scanning laser radar is designed and calibrated. A set of mechanical equipment driven by a step motor is designed to rotate the scanning plane of a 2D laser range finder to realize 3D scanning. A micro-controller system is embedded for the scanning control and synchronization with the host computer. Measurement data are acquired by a self-developed high-speed data transmission board. Besides the inherent measurement error of the 2D laser range finder, the error of the resulting 3D LADAR system is mainly caused by two reasons: 1) the unknown offset between the axis of the pitching motion and the actual origin of the 2D laser range finder; 2) the initial attitude error. Based on the system measurement model, a least sum of squared error method is adopted to calibrate the system. The experimental results show that the resulting system has high scanning speed, high data accuracy and therefore is a cost effective means to acquire high quality 3D data

Abstract:To assist in the implementation of a fine 3D terrain reconstruction of the scene in remote sensing applications, an automatic joint calibration method between light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and visible light camera based on edge points refinement and virtual mask matching is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is used to solve the problem of inaccurate edge estimation of LiDAR with different horizontal angle resolutions and low calibration efficiency. First, we design a novel calibration target, adding four hollow rectangles for fully automatic locating of the calibration target and increasing the number of corner points. Second, an edge refinement strategy based on background point clouds is proposed to estimate the target edge more accurately. Third, a two-step method of automatically matching between the calibration target in 3D point clouds and the 2D image is proposed. Through this method, i.e., locating firstly and then fine processing, corner points can be automatically obtained, which can greatly reduce the manual operation. Finally, a joint optimization equation is established to optimize the camera's intrinsic and extrinsic parameters of LiDAR and camera. According to our experiments, we prove the accuracy and robustness of the proposed method through projection and data consistency verifications. The accuracy can be improved by at least 15.0% when testing on the comparable traditional methods. The final results verify that our method is applicable to LiDAR with large horizontal angle resolutions.

Abstract:Based on the characters of the line scan CCD camera and the Vehicle-borne 3D data acquisition system, it presented a novel method to calibrate the line Scan Camera (LSC) based on the laser scanner. Using the angle information in the original laser scanner data, combing the principle of the line scan camera, it built a calibration model for LSC and designed some experiment methods to implement that. Using the new model and the special experiment methods it computed out high precision LSC calibration parameters, which provides basis for the fusion of image and point cloud data and gives references to the similar sensors calibration.

Abstract:In this paper, a structured light vision measurement method using a scanning laser line and a positioning laser line is proposed. The novel method enables the scanning laser plane to slide along a slide rail while maintaining intersection with the positioning laser plane, eliminating the need to determine the scanning direction and moving step. During the measurement process, the laser plane equations need to be recalibrated for each new position, so a real-time calibration method is given. Initially, the geometric barycenter method is employed to detect the subpixel coordinates of the light stripe intersection point. Subsequently, these coordinates are projected into the camera coordinate system using the initial equations of the positioning laser plane. Finally, leveraging the normal information of the initial equation of the scanning laser plane and the three-dimensional coordinates of the light stripe intersection point, the real-time calibration of the scanning laser plane equations can be accomplished. The proposed method enables the three-dimensional reconstruction of objects, and its accuracy is verified through measurements on gauge blocks. Experimental results demonstrate that this method achieves precise and stable three-dimensional reconstruction of object surface shape.

Abstract:This paper proposes a calibration method for a self-rotating, linear-structured-light (LSL) scanning, three-dimensional reconstruction system based on plane constraints. The point cloud of plane target collected by the self-rotating, LSL scanning, 3D reconstruction system should be constrained to the basic principle of the plane equation; it can quickly and accurately calibrate the position parameters between the coordinate system of the LSL module and the coordinate system of the self-rotating, LSL scanning, 3D reconstruction system. Additionally, the transformation equation could be established with the calibrated optimal position parameters. This paper obtains the above-mentioned position parameters through experiments and uses the calibrated self-rotating, LSL scanning, 3D reconstruction system to perform three-dimensional scanning and reconstruction of the test piece. The experimental results show that the calibration method can effectively improve the measurement accuracy of the system.

Abstract:Abstract On-site inspection with a laser displacement sensor installed on the spindle of a three-axis machine tool has found a wide range of applications in industrial processes. The calibration of the beam direction and the integration of the on-site scanned points are crucial for the measurement of free-form surfaces. This paper presents a method to calibrate the unit direction vector of the laser beam and integrate the on-site scanned points based on a standard ball. By scanning the fixed ball, a group of nonlinear equations is constructed. The nonlinear equations are solved by the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm to get the unit direction vector of the laser beam and the center position of the standard ball. Then the coordinate transformation parameters between the world coordinate system and the sensor coordinate system are calculated. The scanned points from different coordinate systems are transformed into the world coordinate system by the coordinate transformation. The method simplifies the traditional calibration process and realizes the integration of the multi-angle scanned points on a three-axis machine tool. The feasibility and effectiveness of this method are verified through simulation and practical experiment. By comparing fitting value under different measuring conditions with the nominal, the measurement parameters including the incident angle and the scan depth are optimized. In the experiment, the measurement accuracy of this method reaches 0.02 mm.

Abstract:It is too difficult to directly obtain the correspondence features between the two-dimensional (2D) laser-range-finder (LRF) scan point and camera depth point cloud, which leads to a cumbersome calibration process and low calibration accuracy. To address the problem, we propose a calibration method to construct point-line constraint relations between 2D LRF and depth camera observational features by using a specific calibration board. Through the observation of two different poses, we construct the hyperstatic equations group based on point-line constraints and solve the coordinate transformation parameters of 2D LRF and depth camera by the least square (LSQ) method. According to the calibration error and threshold, the number of observation and the observation pose are adjusted adaptively. After experimental verification and comparison with existing methods, the method proposed in this paper easily and efficiently solves the problem of the joint calibration of the 2D LRF and depth camera, and well meets the application requirements of multi-sensor fusion for mobile robots.

Abstract:A multi-line structured light measurement method that combines a single-line and a three-line laser, in which precision sliding rails and displacement measurement equipment are not required, is proposed in this paper. During the measurement, the single-line structured light projects onto the surface of an object and the three-line structured light remains fixed. The single-line laser is moved and intersects with the three-line laser to form three intersection points. The single-line light plane can be solved using the camera coordinates of three intersection points, thus completing the real-time calibration of the scanned light plane. The single-line laser can be scanned at any angle to determine the overall complete three-dimensional (3D) shape of the object during the process. Experimental results show that this method overcomes the difficulty of obtaining information about certain angles and locations and can effectively recover the 3D shape of the object. The measurement system's repetition error is under 0.16 mm, which is sufficient to measure the 3D shapes of complicated workpieces.

Abstract:Abstract High precision and large measurement range are the target of any one three-dimensional scanner. For a line structure light vision sensor, measurement precision depends on its calibration results, i.e., determining mathematical expression of the light plane in camera coordinate system. However, as calibration results are locally optimal solutions, high precise measurement in a large range is difficult. In this paper, we give a precise measurement method and the corresponding calibration procedure for a line structure light vision sensor with a large measurement range. A motorized linear translation stages with a travel range of 150 mm and a planar target which is a surface plate with a machining precision of 0.05 mm are utilized. With the help of the linear translation stage and the planar target, functions which gives the relationship between center point of the laser stripe and the perpendicular/ horizontal distance are obtained. Once image of light stripe is captured, we can get a precise measurement result from the normalized feature points. Compared with a traditional measurement method, distortion compensation is not necessary and precision of measurement is improved significantly. Experiments show that root mean square error of measurement results according to our proposed method is reduced by 64.67% related to the traditional method.

Abstract:This paper proposes an improved calibration method for a structured light system by using the random sample consensus (RANSAC) method with nonlinear optimization and an improved gray centroid method. The proposed method is composed of two steps: calibrating intrinsic and extrinsic parameters for the camera, exploiting the improved gray centroid method to extract the centerline, and fitting the structured light plane by the RANSAC approach with the three-dimensional (3D) points obtained from different positions. The error function caused by the extracted centerline is deduced based on the pixel error perturbation method. The error results of the 3D points are simulated and analyzed. An imaging system is built to realize the 3D imaging. The experimental results show that the calibration error is within 0.08 mm and the reconstruction error is less than 0.45 mm. Moreover, it performs better for the reconstruction of complex objects compared with traditional methods.
