A predicted electron-capture decay directly to the ground state of argon-40 has never been observed. The KDK (potassium decay) collaboration reports strong evidence of this rare decay mode. The Final Frontier for Proton Decay

Abstract:We present a novel experimental concept to search for proton decay. Using paleo-detectors, ancient minerals acquired from deep underground which can hold traces of charged particles, it may be possible to conduct a search for $p \to \bar{\nu} K^+$ via the track produced at the endpoint of the kaon. Such a search is not possible on Earth due to large atmospheric-neutrino-induced backgrounds. However, the Moon offers a reprieve from this background, since the conventional component of the cosmic-ray-induced neutrino flux at the Moon is significantly suppressed due to the Moon's lack of atmosphere. For a 100 g, $10^9$ year old (100 kton$\cdot$year exposure) sample of olivine extracted from the Moon, we expect about 0.5 kaon endpoints due to neutrino backgrounds, including secondary interactions. If such a lunar paleo-detector sample can be acquired and efficiently analyzed, proton decay sensitivity exceeding $\tau_p\sim10^{34}$ years may be achieved, competitive with Super-Kamiokande's current published limit ($\tau_p>5.9\times 10^{33}$ years at 90% CL) and the projected reach of DUNE and Hyper-Kamiokande in the $p \to \bar{\nu} K^+$ channel. This concept is clearly futuristic, not least since it relies on extracting mineral samples from a few kilometers below the surface of the Moon and then efficiently scanning them for kaon endpoint induced crystal defects with sub-micron-scale resolution. However, the search for proton decay is in urgent need of a paradigm shift, and paleo-detectors could provide a promising alternative to conventional experiments.

A blinded analysis reveals a distinctly nonzero ratio of intensities of ground-state electron-captures (IEC0) over excited-state ones (IEC*) of IEC0/IEC*=0.0095±stat0.0022±sys0.0010 (68% CL), with the null hypothesis rejected at 4σ [Stukel et al., Phys. Abstract:In our current study, we delve into the peak-like structure observed during the reaction process of K+n→K0p at approximately s≈2.5 GeV. Our focus centers on exploring the potential S=+1 resonance P0+*≡P0* as an excited state within the extended vector-meson and baryon ( VB ) antidecuplet. To achieve this aim, we employ the effective Lagrangian method in conjunction with the (u,t) -channel Regge approach, operating within the tree-level Born approximation. We thoroughly examine various spin-parity quantum numbers for the resonance, resulting in a compelling description of the data, where MP0*≈2.5 GeV and ΓP0*≈100 MeV. Furthermore, we propose an experimental technique to amplify the signal-to-noise ratio ( S/N ) for accurately measuring the resonance. Notably, our findings reveal that background interference diminishes significantly within the K* forward-scattering region in the center-of-mass frame when the K* is perpendicularly polarized to the reaction plane. Additionally, we explore the recoil-proton spin asymmetry to definitively determine the spin and parity of the resonance. This study stands to serve as a valuable reference for designing experimental setups aimed at investigating and comprehending exotic phenomena in quantum chromodynamics. Rare K decays off and on the lattice

Abstract:The importance of rare $K$ decays especially in the context of a kaon unitarity triangle (KUT) is emphasized. The decay $K_L \to \pi^0 \nu \bar \nu$ is theoretically very clean but experimentally extremely challenging. The Standard Model prediction $\mathcal{B}\sim 3 \times 10^{-11}$ is still about two orders of magnitude away from the current experimental upper bound. One way to continue to make progress towards the construction of a KUT is by improving the accuracy in the calculation of $\varepsilon'$. Another way which is the primary focus here is via studies of $K^0 \to \pi^0 \mu^+ \mu^-$. LHCb, J-PARC, the proposed HIKE project, phenomenology, and in fact precision studies on the lattice can all play a very important role in this context.

Abstract:A bstract In this work, we study the long-standing experimental anomaly in muon ( g − 2) and also recent anomalous excess in $$ {K}_L\to {\pi}^0+v\overline{v} $$ K L → π 0 + v v ̄ at the J-PARC KOTO experiment with sgoldstino. After supersymmetry breaking, the interactions between quarks and sgoldstino ( s ) make the decays K → π + s sizable through loop diagrams, which affects the measurements of decays K → π + invisible. Furthermore, the couplings between photons and sgoldstino contribute to ∆ a μ as well as the bino-slepton contribution. With satisfying all known experimental constraints such as from NA62, E949, E137, Orsay, KTEV and CHARM experiments, these two anomalies can be explained simultaneously. The mass of CP-even sgoldstino is close to the neutral pion mass which does not violate the Grossman-Nir bound. The parameter space can be further tested in future NA62, DUNE experiments, as well as experiments in the LHC.

A Novel Proton Decay Signature at DUNE, JUNO, and Hyper-K

Abstract:Proton decay, although unobserved so far, is a natural expectation when attempting to explain the baryon asymmetry of the universe. $p\to K^+\bar{\nu}$ or $p\to K^+\tilde{\chi}_1^0$, with $\tilde{\chi}_1^0$ a light exotic neutral particle, represent possible decay channels achievable in models of physics beyond the Standard Model, such as the MSSM with trilinear R-parity-violating terms, or the Standard Model extended by a heavy neutral lepton. Among the decay products of these modes, the neutral fermions would typically appear as missing energy in collider searches. The present study considers how such decay modes could be differentiated in experimental settings, as the exotic $\tilde{\chi}_1^0$ may further decay if it is not protected by a symmetry (such as R-parity in the MSSM). We assess the detection prospects of the proposed experiments DUNE, JUNO and Hyper-K in this context.

Abstract: The decays and mixing of $K$ mesons are remarkably sensitive to the weak interactions of quarks and leptons at high energies. They provide important tests of the standard model at both first and second order in the Fermi constant $G_F$ and offer a window into possible new phenomena at energies as high as 1,000 TeV. These possibilities become even more compelling as the growing capabilities of lattice QCD make high-precision standard model predictions possible. Here we discuss and attempt to forecast some of these capabilities.

Abstract:As flavor changing neutral current processes, rare kaon decays K → πν ν are highly suppressed in the standard model and thus provide ideal probes for the observation of new physics effects.Given the importance of rare kaon decays, the CERN NA62 experiment aims at an observation of O(100) events of K + → π + ν ν decay and a 10%-precision measurement of the branching ratio in two years.Another experiment, J-PARC KOTO, is dedicated to search for the CP-violating K L → π 0 ν ν decay.Recognizing that the standard model predictions will soon be confronted with new experimental results, it is important to determine the long-distance contributions to K + → π + ν ν with a controlled error.Here I will present an exploratory calculation of the longdistance contributions to the K + → π + ν ν decay amplitude from first principles using lattice QCD.

Abstract:We critically review the common belief that ultrahigh energy cosmic rays are protons or atomic nuclei with masses not exceeding that of iron. We find that heavier nuclei are indeed possible, and discuss possible sources and acceleration mechanisms for such primaries. We also show detailed simulations of extensive air showers produced by ``superheavy'' nuclei, and discuss prospects for their detection in future experiments.

Discovering hidden sectors with mono-photon Z' searches

Abstract:In many theories of physics beyond the Standard Model, from extra dimensions to Hidden Valleys and models of dark matter, Z' bosons mediate between Standard Model particles and hidden sector states. We study the feasibility of observing such hidden states through an invisibly decaying Z' at the LHC. We focus on the process pp -> \gamma Z' -> \gamma X X*, where X is any neutral, (quasi-) stable particle, whether a Standard Model (SM) neutrino or a new state. This complements a previous study using pp -> Z Z' -> l+ l- X X*. Only the Z' mass and two effective charges are needed to describe this process. If the Z' decays invisibly only to Standard Model neutrinos, then these charges are predicted by observation of the Z' through the Drell-Yan process, allowing discrimination between Z' decays to SM neutrinos and invisible decays to new states. We carefully discuss all backgrounds and systematic errors that affect this search. We find that hidden sector decays of a 1 TeV Z' can be observed at 5 sigma significance with 50 fb^{-1} at the LHC. Observation of a 1.5 TeV state requires super-LHC statistics of 1 ab^{-1}. Control of the systematic errors, in particular the parton distribution function uncertainty of the dominant Z \gamma background, is crucial to maximize the LHC search

Abstract:The KOTO experiment at the J-PARC research facility in Tokai, Japan aims to observe and measure the rare decay of the neutral kaon, $K_L^0 \rightarrow \pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu}$. This decay has a Standard Model (SM) predicted branching ratio (BR) of $(3.00 \pm 0.30) \times 10^{-11}$. While this decay is extremely rare, it is one of the best decays in the quark sector to probe for new physics beyond the SM due to small theoretical uncertainties. The E391a experiment at KEK 12-GeV PS previously searched for $K_L^0 \rightarrow \pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu}$ events and set a limit of BR($K_L^0 \rightarrow \pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu}$) $< 2.6 \times 10^{-8}$ in 2010. In 2018, KOTO set a new experimental limit of BR($K_L^0 \rightarrow \pi^0 \nu \bar{\nu}$) $< 3.0 \times 10^{-9}$ from data collected in 2015, improving the best experimental upper limit by an order of magnitude. From 2016 to 2018, KOTO collected around 1.5 times more data than in 2015, and the analysis of this dataset is underway. This report covers the progress and current status of the 2016-2018 data analysis.
