Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals, which possess 3D linear dispersion in the electronic structure as a bulk analogue of graphene, have lately generated widespread interest in both materials science and condensed matter physics. Recently, crystalline Cd3As2 has been proposed and proved to be a 3D Dirac semimetal that can survive in the atmosphere. Here, by using point contact spectroscopy measurements, we observe exotic superconductivity around the point contact region on the surface of Cd3As2 crystals. The zero-bias conductance peak (ZBCP) and double conductance peaks (DCPs) symmetric around zero bias suggest p-wave-like unconventional superconductivity. Considering the topological properties of 3D Dirac semimetals, our findings may indicate that Cd3As2 crystals under certain conditions could be topological superconductors, which are predicted to support Majorana zero modes or gapless Majorana edge/surface modes in the boundary depending on the dimensionality of the material.

Abstract:Cd3As2 is a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with separated Dirac points in momentum space. In spite of extensive transport and spectroscopic studies on its exotic properties, the evidence of superconductivity in its surface states remains elusive. Here, we report the observation of proximity-induced surface superconductivity in Nb/Cd3As2 hybrid structures. Our four-terminal transport measurement identifies a pronounced proximity-induced pairing gap (gap size comparable to Nb) on the surfaces, which exhibits a flat conductance plateau in differential conductance spectra, consistent with our theoretical simulations. The surface supercurrent from Nb/Cd3As2/Nb junctions is also achieved with a Fraunhofer/SQUID-like pattern under out-of-plane/in-plane magnetic fields, respectively. The resultant mapping shows a predominant distribution on the top and bottom surfaces as the bulk carriers are depleted, which can be regarded as a higher dimensional analog of edge supercurrent in two-dimensional quantum spin Hall insulators. Our study provides the evidence of surface superconductivity in Dirac semimetals.

Abstract:We report point-contact spectroscopy measurements on heavy fermion cousins CeCoIn5, Ce2PdIn8and Ce3PdIn11to systematically study the hybridization betweenfand conduction electrons. Below a temperatureT*, the spectrum of each compound exhibits an evolving Fano-like conductance shape, superimposed on a sloping background, that suggests the development of hybridization between localfand itinerant conduction electrons in the coherent heavy fermion state belowT*. We present a quantitative analysis of the conductance curves with a two-channel model to compare the tunneling process between normal metallic silver particles in our soft point-contact and heavy-fermion single crystals CeCoIn5, Ce2PdIn8and Ce3PdIn11.

Abstract:We report the quantum transport properties of Cd3As2 single crystals in a magnetic field. A large linear quantum magnetoresistance is observed near room temperature. With decreasing temperature, the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations appear in both the longitudinal resistance R-xx and the transverse Hall resistance R-xy. From the strong oscillatory component Delta R-xx, a linear dependence of the Landau index n on 1/B is obtained, and it gives an n-axis intercept between 1/2 and 5/8. This clearly reveals a nontrivial pi Berry's phase, which is a distinguished feature of Dirac fermions. Our quantum transport results provide bulk evidence for the existence of a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal phase in Cd-3 As-2.

Abstract:Three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetals have hitherto stimulated unprecedented research interests as a new class of quantum materials. Breaking certain types of symmetries has been proposed to enable the manipulation of Dirac fermions, and that was soon realized by external modulations such as magnetic fields. However, an intrinsic manipulation of Dirac states, which is more efficient and desirable, remains a significant challenge. Here, we report a systematic study of quasi-particle dynamics and band evolution in Cd3As2 thin films with controlled chromium (Cr) doping by both magneto-infrared spectroscopy and electrical transport. We observe the √B relation of inter-Landau-level resonance in Cd3As2, an important signature of ultrarelativistic massless state inaccessible in previous optical experiments. A crossover from quantum to quasi-classical behavior makes it possible to directly probe the mass of Dirac fermions. Importantly, Cr doping allows for a Dirac mass acquisition and topological phase transition enabling a desired dynamic control of Dirac fermions. Corroborating with the density-functional theory calculations, we show that the mass generation can be explained by the explicit C4 rotation symmetry breaking and the resultant Dirac gap engineering through Cr substitution for Cd atoms. The manipulation of the system symmetry and Dirac mass in Cd3As2 thin films provides a tuning knob to explore the exotic states stemming from the parent phase of Dirac semimetals.

Abstract:AbstractSingle crystals of (Cd1−xZnx)3As2 were synthesized from high-temperature solutions and characterized in terms of their structural and electrical properties. Based on the measurements of resistivity and Hall signals, we revealed a chemical-doping-controlled transition from a three-dimensional Dirac semimetal to a semiconductor with a critical point xc ~ 0.38. We observed structural transitions from a body-center tetragonal phase to a primitive tetragonal phase then back to a body-center tetragonal phase in the solid solutions as well, which are irrelevant to the topological phase transition. This continuously tunable system controlled by chemical doping provides a platform for investigating the topological quantum phase transition of three-dimensional Dirac electrons.

Abstract:Three-dimensional Dirac semimetals host bulk Dirac fermions characterized by a linear dispersion relation in momentum space along all three dimensions. It has been theoretically predicted that the breaking of C-4 rotational crystalline symmetry in the Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 may give rise to the massive Dirac fermions. Here we report the phase-coherent transport in Cd3As2 nanowires studied by measuring the universal conductance fluctuations (UCFs). It is found that the UCF amplitude is largely suppressed at the Dirac point by sweeping the magnetic field at different gate voltages, which is ascribed to the breaking of the C-4 rotational symmetry-induced band-gap opening. The temperature dependence of resistance demonstrates a magnetic-field-induced metal-insulator transition, consisting of the band-gap opening. Moreover, the UCF amplitude is reduced by a factor of similar to 2 root 2 in the presence of a magnetic field, suggesting the phase transition from a Dirac-to-Weyl semimetal by breaking time-reversal symmetry.

Abstract:We measure the magnetotransport properties of the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal Cd3As2 single crystal under magnetic fields up to 36 T. Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are clearly resolved and the n = 1 Landau level is reached. A detailed analysis on the intercept of the Landau index plot reveals a significant dependence of the SdH phase factor on the orientation of the applied magnetic field. When the magnetic field is applied in the [001] direction, i.e., along the fourfold screw axis of the tetragonal crystal structure, a nontrivial p Berry phase, as predicted for the Dirac fermions, is observed. However, in a magnetic field tilted away from the [001] direction, the p Berry phase is evidently reduced, and a considerable enhancement of the effective mass is also revealed. Our observations demonstrate that the Dirac dispersion in Cd3As2 is effectively modified in a tilted magnetic field, whereas the preserved p Berry phase in a magnetic field along the [001] direction can be related to the realization of the Weyl fermions. The sudden change of the SdH phase also indicates a possible topological phase transition induced by the symmetry-breaking effect.
Point-contact Spectroscopic Studies on Normal and Superconducting AFe_2As_2-type Iron-Pnictide Single Crystals

Abstract:Point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy (PCARS) is applied to investigate the gap structure in iron pnictide single crystal superconductors of the AFe_2As_2 (A=Ba, Sr) family ("Fe-122"). The observed point-contact junction conductance curves, G(V), can be divided into two categories: one where Andreev reflection is present for both (Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4})Fe_2As_2 and Ba(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})_2As_2, and the other with a V^{2/3} background conductance universally observed extending even up to 100 meV for Sr_{0.6}Na_{0.4}Fe_2As_2 and Sr(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})_2As_2. The latter is also observed in point-contact junctions on the nonsuperconducting parent compound BaFe_2As_2. Mesoscopic phase-separated coexistence of magnetic and superconducting orders is considered to explain distinct behaviors in the superconducting samples. For Ba_{0.6}K_{0.4}Fe_2As_2, double peaks due to Andreev reflection with strongly-sloping background are frequently observed for point-contacts on freshly-cleaved c-axis surfaces. If normalized by a background baseline and analyzed by the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model, the data show a gap size ~3.0-4.0 meV with 2\Delta_0/k_BT_c ~ 2.0-2.6, consistent with the smaller gap size reported in the LnFeAsO family ("Fe-1111"). For the Ba(Fe_{0.9}Co_{0.1})_2As_2, G(V) curves typically display a zero-bias conductance peak.
Broad and Colossal Edge Supercurrent in Dirac Semimetal Cd 3 As 2 Josephson Junctions

Abstract:Edge supercurrent has attracted great interest recently due to its crucial role in achieving and manipulating topological superconducting states. Proximity-induced superconductivity has been realized in quantum Hall and quantum spin Hall edge states, as well as in higher-order topological hinge states. Non-Hermitian skin effect, the aggregation of non-Bloch eigenstates at open boundaries, promises an abnormal edge channel. Here we report the observation of broad edge supercurrent in Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 -based Josephson junctions. The as-grown Cd 3 As 2 nanoplates are electron-doped by intrinsic defects, which enhance the non-Hermitian perturbations. The superconducting quantum interference indicates edge supercurrent with a width of ~1.6 μm and a magnitude of ~1 μA at 10 mK. The wide and large edge supercurrent is inaccessible for a conventional edge system and suggests the presence of non-Hermitian skin effect. A supercurrent nonlocality is also observed. The interplay between band topology and non-Hermiticity is beneficial for exploiting exotic topological matter.

Abstract:We report that a quasi-one-dimensional ternary compound Ca3Pt4Bi8 exhibits bulk superconductivity at 0.6 K probed by dc magnetic susceptibility and specific-heat experiments, coexisting with a surface superconductivity at 1.17 K probed by electrical resistivity measurements. The two superconducting phases exhibit significantly different upper critical fields. In electrical resistivity measurements, the resistivity exhibits strong anisotropy and the obtained upper critical field is strongly anisotropic as well, implying two-dimensional (2D) superconductivity. Meanwhile, the bulk upper critical field measured by the dc magnetic susceptibility and specific heat is much smaller than that obtained by electrical resistivity measurements. Moreover, the angular dependence of the upper critical field mu 0Hc2 based on the resistivity measurements is consistent with the 2D Tinkham model. Combined with the study of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), 2D superconductivity should occur on the surface of the sample where a thin shell surrounding the bulk phase forms possibly due to a kind of spontaneous chemical change. The first-principles calculations unveil a complicated Fermi surface with ten bands crossing the Fermi level. Some steep bands among these reflect the quasi-one-dimensional nature. This quasi-one-dimensional ternary compound exhibits interesting surface superconductivity in addition to the bulk superconductivity which is worthy of further study.
Interface Superconductivity in the Point Contact Between Topological Semimetals Polymorphic PtBi2 and Ferromagnetic Tips

Abstract:Topological semimetals, possessing topologically non-trivial band structures, serve as excellent platforms for realizing topological superconductivity through hard point-contact experiments. In this study, we successfully induce superconductivity in the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, cubic PtBi2, using ferromagnetic and paramagnetic tips in hard point contact experiments. The induced superconductivity is proven to be insensitive to ferromagnetism and exhibits unconventional features in the point-contact spectra. The highest superconducting transition temperature ( T_c ) reaches approximately 5.1 K, and the T_c values are proven to have a positive correlation with the coupling between the tip and the sample. Furthermore, we extend our point-contact experiments to trigonal PtBi2, a material possessing a type-I Weyl semimetal band structure and triply degenerate points proximate to the Fermi level. Utilizing both ferromagnetic Ni tips and paramagnetic Ag tips, we successfully enhance superconductivity with a T_c of up to 3.0 K in this material. The findings from point-contact measurements reveal that the enhanced superconductivity is compatible with ferromagnetism and the magnetism of the tip can affect the symmetry of the enhanced superconducting state. Given that the lattice structure remains stable under pressure up to 51.2 GPa for cubic PtBi2 and 12.9 GPa for trigonal PtBi2, the emergent superconducting states observed in these two PtBi2 materials could inherit their topological nontrivial nature and be promising candidates for topological superconductor.
Magnetotransport Properties Near the Dirac Point of Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2nanowires

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) Dirac semimetals are featured by 3D linear energy-momentum dispersion relation, which have been proposed to be a desirable system to study Dirac fermions in 3D space and Weyl fermions in solid-state materials. Significantly, to reveal exotic transport properties of Dirac semimetals, the Fermi level should be close to the Dirac point, around which the linear dispersion is retained. Here we report the magnetotransport properties near the Dirac point in Cd3As2 nanowires, manifesting the evolution of band structure under magnetic field. Ambipolar field effect is observed with the Dirac point at V-g = 3.9 V. Under high magnetic field, there is a resistivity dip in transfer curve at the Dirac point, which is caused by the Zeeman splitting enhanced density of state around the Dirac point. Furthermore, the low carrier density in the nanowires makes it feasible to enter into the quantum limit regime, resulting in the quantum linear magnetoresistance being observed even at room temperature. Besides, the dramatic reduction of bulk conductivity due to the low carrier density, together with a large surface to volume ratio of the nanowire, collectively help to reveal the Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations from the surface states. Our studies on transport properties around the Dirac point therefore provide deep insights into the emerging exotic physics of Dirac and Weyl fermions.
Pressure-induced Superconductivity in the Three-Dimensional Topological Dirac Semimetal Cd3As2

Abstract:The recently discovered Dirac and Weyl semimetals are new members of topological materials. Starting from them, topological superconductivity may be achieved, e.g., by carrier doping or applying pressure. Here we report high-pressure resistance and X-ray diffraction study of the three-dimensional topological Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 . Superconductivity with T c ≈2.0 K is observed at 8.5 GPa. The T c keeps increasing to about 4.0 K at 21.3 GPa, then shows a nearly constant pressure dependence up to the highest pressure 50.9 GPa. The X-ray diffraction measurements reveal a structure phase transition around 3.5 GPa. Our observation of superconductivity in pressurised topological Dirac semimetal Cd 3 As 2 provides a new candidate for topological superconductor, as argued in a recent point contact study and a theoretical work.

Abstract:We report an observation of a pressure-induced breakdown of the three-dimensional Dirac semimetal (3DDSM) state in Cd3As2, evidenced by a series of in situ high-pressure synchrotron x-ray diffraction and single-crystal transport measurements. We find that Cd3As2 undergoes a structural phase transition from a metallic tetragonal phase in space group I4(1)/acd to a semiconducting monoclinic phase in space group P2(1)/c at critical pressure 2.57 GPa; above this pressure, an activation energy gap appears, accompanied by distinct switches in Hall resistivity slope and electron mobility. These changes of crystal symmetry and corresponding transport properties manifest the breakdown of the 3DDSM state in pressurized Cd3As2.

Abstract:Based on the first-principles calculations, we recover the silent topological nature of Cd3As2, a well known semiconductor with high carrier mobility. We find that it is a symmetry-protected topological semimetal with a single pair of three-dimensional (3D) Dirac points in the bulk and non-trivial Fermi arcs on the surfaces. It can be driven into a topological insulator and a Weyl semi-metal state by symmetry breaking, or into a quantum spin Hall insulator with gap more than 100meV by reducing dimensionality. We propose that the 3D Dirac cones in the bulk of Cd3As2 can support sizable linear quantum magnetoresistance even up to room temperature.

Abstract:We report the first experimental observation of superconductivity in Cd$_3$As$_2$ thin films without application of external pressure. Surface studies suggest that the observed transport characteristics are related to the polycrystalline continuous part of investigated films with homogeneous distribution of elements and the Cd-to-As ratio close to stoichiometric Cd$_3$As$_2$. The latter is also supported by Raman spectra of the studied films, which are similar to those of Cd$_3$As$_2$ single crystals. The formation of superconducting phase in films under study is confirmed by the characteristic behavior of temperature and magnetic field dependence of samples resistances, as well as by the presence of pronounced zero-resistance plateaux in $dV/dI$ characteristics. The corresponding $H_c-T_c$ plots reveal a clearly pronounced linear behavior within the intermediate temperature range, similar to that observed for bulk Cd$_3$As$_2$ and Bi$_2$Se$_3$ films under pressure, suggesting the possibility of nontrivial pairing in the films under investigation. We discuss a possible role of sample inhomogeneities and crystal strains in the observed phenomena.

Observation of surface superstructure induced by systematic vacancies in the topological Dirac semimetal Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$

Abstract:The Dirac semimetal phase found in Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ is protected by a $C_{4}$ rotational symmetry derived from a corkscrew arrangement of systematic Cd vacancies in its complicated crystal structure. It is therefore surprising that no microscopic observation, direct or indirect, of these systematic vacancies has so far been described. To this end, we revisit the cleaved (112) surface of Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ using a combined approach of scanning tunneling microscopy and \textit{ab initio} calculations. We determine the exact position of the (112) plane at which Cd$_{3}$As$_{2}$ naturally cleaves, and describe in detail a structural periodicity found at the reconstructed surface, consistent with that expected to arise from the systematic Cd vacancies. This reconciles the current state of microscopic surface observations with those of crystallographic and theoretical models, and demonstrates that this vacancy superstructure, central to the preservation of the Dirac semimetal phase, survives the cleavage process and retains order at the surface.

Abstract:ZrRuAs single crystals with hexagonal crystal structure, which is a kind of non-centrosymmetric superconductor with relatively high transition temperature, is predicted to be a topological superconductor candidate. To explore the exotic properties of ZrRuAs, the superconducting gap of ZrRuAs needs to be measured. In this work, point-contact Andreev reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy is used to investigate the superconductivity of ZrRuAs single crystals. The double conductance peaks in the PCAR spectra are observed along different crystal directions. The superconducting gap can be quantitatively analyzed by using the modified Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model based on the s-wave superconductivity. The temperature dependence of the extracted superconducting gap follows the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory. Our results suggest the isotropic s-wave superconductivity in ZrRuAs.
