Abstract:Gliomas are the most common type of brain tumor and have a poor prognosis. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a class of small, endogenous, and non-coding RNAs that play crucial roles in cell proliferation, survival, and invasion. Deregulated expression of miR-206 has been investigated in many cancers. However, the role of miR-206 in glioblastoma is still unclear. In the present study, we found that the expression of miR-206 was decreased in cancer tissues compared with normal tissues. However, the expression level of BCL-2 was higher in cancer tissues than that in normal tissues (all p < 0.001). Statistically, the expression level of BCL-2 was inversely correlated with the miR-206. In addition, the overall survival of glioblastoma patients with lower miR-206 expression was significantly shorter than those with high miR-206 expression (p < 0.001). Besides, the expression of miR-206 was also decreased in U87 and U251 cells. In vitro assays showed that ectopic miR-206 expression affected the proliferation, cell cycle, and invasion in U87 and U251 cells. Importantly, we identified BCL-2 as a direct target of miR-206 in U87 and U251 cells using luciferase assay. Overexpression of BCL-2 partially attenuated the miR-206-mediated cell proliferation. In vivo, overexpression of miR-206 suppressed the progression of glioblastoma cells using mice xenograft model. In conclusion, this study suggested that miR-206 could act as a tumor suppressor gene through inhibiting BCL-2 in the development of glioblastoma.

Abstract:Subsequently to the publication of the above paper, an interested reader drew to the authors' attention that certain of the control western blotting data featured in Fig. 5 on p. 2581 had also appeared in a couple of other articles featuring several of the same authors [Tu K, Dou C, Zheng X, Li C, Yang W, Yao Y and Liu Q: Fibulin‑5 inhibits hepatocellular carcinoma cell migration and invasion by down‑regulating matrix metalloproteinase‑7 expression. BMC Cancer 14: 938, 2014; and Gai X, Tu K, Li C, Roberts LR and Zheng X: Histone acetyltransferase PCAF accelerates apoptosis by repressing a GLI1/BCL2/BAX axis in hepatocellular carcinoma. Abstract:Subsequently to the publication of the above article, the authors have realized that the cell migration and tube formation assay data portrayed in Figs. 2 and 4 in their paper were published with some inadvertent errors. Specifically, the photograph selected for the ACHN-SFM group was accidentally misused for the 769P/LV-miR-218 group in Fig. 2F. Secondly, the photograph for the 786O/LV‑NC group in Fig. 2F was accidentally misused as the image for the 786O/shNC group in Fig. 4E; and thirdly, the photograph selected for the ACHN/shNC group in Fig. 4C was inadvertently misused for the ACHN/shNC group in Fig. 4D. These errors arose inadvertently as a consequence of the authors' mishandling their data; however, the authors were able to retrieve their original data, and have been able to reassemble these figures to show the data as was originally intended. The revised versions of Figs. 2 and 4, featuring the corrected data panels for the 769P/LV‑miR‑218 group in Fig. 2F, the ACHN/shNC group in Fig. 4D and the 786O/shNC group in Fig. 4E, are shown on the next two pages. Abstract:The authors of the above article drew to our attention that they had identified three instances of data overlapping between data panels, suggesting that data purportedly showing results obtained under different experimental conditions had been derived from the same original source. Comparing between the two figures, two pairs of panels in Fig. 4B (the Mimics control and blank experiments for the U87 and U251 cell lines) were shown to be overlapping, and a further pair of panels showed overlapping data in Fig. 6B (the data panels for the miR‑375 mi + .pCDNA/RWDD3 and miR‑375 mi + .pCDNA experiments for the U87 cell line). The authors were able to re‑examine the original data files and retrieve the correct data panels. The errors in these figures arose through inadvertently assembling Figs. 4 and 6 incorrectly. The revised versions of Figs. 4 and 6, featuring the corrected data panels for the Mimics control and blank experiments for the U87 and U251 cell lines in Fig. 4B, and the correct data for the U87 cell line in Fig. 6B, are shown opposite and on the next page, respectively. Abstract:Following the publication of the above article, the authors have informed us that they found errors in two of the published figures that occurred whilst compiling them. In Fig. 8, the representative images selected for the migratory and invasive A375 cells in the Lv‑control + miR‑367 NC group experiments were found to be overlapping. After having consulted their original data, the authors noted that the error arose during the data acquisition process, and an area of the image captured for the migratory A375 cells was inadvertently re‑used as the invasive A375 cells for the Lv‑control + miR‑367 NC group. Likewise, in Fig. S3, the error arose during the process of assembling the data in the figure: In this case, the (A) migratory and (B) invasive cell images shown for the SK‑MEL‑28/Lv‑LINC00961 + PTEN siRNA experiments were selected incorrectly.
