Abstract:Capturing CO 2 from the atmosphere and converting it into fuels are an efficient strategy to stop the deteriorating greenhouse effect and alleviate the energy crisis. Among various CO 2 conversion approaches, electrocatalytic CO 2 reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) has received extensive attention because of its mild operating conditions. However, the high onset potential, low selectivity toward multi-carbon products and poor cruising ability of CO 2 RR impede its development. To regulate product distribution, previous studies performed electrocatalyst modification using several universal methods, including composition manipulation, morphology control, surface modification, and defect engineering. Recent studies have revealed that the cathode and electrolytes influence the selectivity of CO 2 RR via pH changes and ionic effects, or by directly participating in the reduction pathway as cocatalysts. This review summarizes the state-of-the-art optimization strategies to efficiently enhance CO 2 RR selectivity from two main aspects, namely the cathode electrocatalyst and the electrolyte.

Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction to fuels presents one of the great challenges in chemistry. Herein we present an understanding of trends in electrocatalytic activity for carbon dioxide reduction over different metal catalysts that rationalize a number of experimental observations including the selectivity with respect to the competing hydrogen evolution reaction. We also identify two design criteria for more active catalysts. The understanding is based on density functional theory calculations of activation energies for electrochemical carbon monoxide reduction as a basis for an electrochemical kinetic model of the process. We develop scaling relations relating transition state energies to the carbon monoxide adsorption energy and determine the optimal value of this descriptor to be very close to that of copper.

Abstract:Productively harnessing CO2 as a reactant is of practical interest due to addressing the dual pressures of resource sustainability and environmental sustainability. Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) offers a promising approach for driving the chemical transformation of CO2 by exploiting green renewably generated electricity at (near) room temperature and ambient pressure, facilitating a sustainable, low-carbon footprint future. In this work, we provide a comprehensive and timely review of the various avenues that have been developed to date to modulate product selectivity, stability, and efficiency toward C2+ using Cu-based electrocatalysts. We discuss how the electrocatalyst structure can be effectively designed in order to boost performance. Special attention is paid to some of the critical intermediate species that shed light on CO2 reduction paths. We will also discuss the application of in situ and operando spectroscopy, along with computational techniques, that help to improve our fundamental understanding of ECR. Finally, development opportunities and challenge in the conversion of CO2 into multi-carbon fuels by Cu-based electrocatalysts are presented.

Abstract:The electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO2) to valuable chemicals is gaining significant attention as a pragmatic solution for achieving carbon neutrality and storing renewable energy in a usable form. Recent research increasingly focuses on designing electrocatalysts that specifically convert CO2 into ethanol, a desirable product due to its high-energy density, ease of storage, and portability. However, achieving high-efficiency ethanol production remains a challenge compared to ethylene (a competing product with a similar electron configuration). Existing electrocatalytic systems often suffer from limitations such as low energy efficiency, poor stability, and inadequate selectivity toward ethanol. Inspired by recent progress in the field, this review explores fundamental principles and material advancements in CO2 electroreduction, emphasizing strategies for ethanol production over ethylene. We discuss electrocatalyst design, reaction mechanisms, challenges, and future research directions. These advancements aim to bridge the gap between current research and industrialized applications of this technology.
Investigating Why Sulfurization Can Greatly Improve Ethanol Selectivity for Carbon Dioxide Electroreduction

Abstract:Carbon dioxide (CO2) electroreduction of products using renewable electricity sources is a promising avenue for chemical energy storage that is attracting increasing attention. Considerable effort has been focused on improving the activity and selectivity for CO2 electroreduction of C2+ products, especially for ethanol. However, studies of this process's underlying mechanism are still lacking. Herein, we use operando Raman spectroscopy combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal mechanisms that explain why sulfurization can greatly improve ethanol selectivity for CO2 electroreduction. We found that the Faradaic efficiency (FE) of ethanol increased from 15% to 55% when the Ag-Au-Ag nanorods (NRs) were sulfurized to a Au-Ag-S NRs structure, which is an increase of over three times. Operando electrochemical surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy empowered by C-12/C-13 isotope exchange finds that intermediates of CO2- and CO on the sulfurized Au-Ag-S NRs can greatly facilitate CO-CO coupling and improve ethanol selectivity. DFT calculations show that the Au-Ag-S NR structure, compared with the Ag-Au-Ag NRs, can lower the energy barrier for CO-CO coupling combined with a proton, greatly facilitating the ethanol formation. Therefore, sulfurization is an effective way to improve ethanol selectivity for CO2 electroreduction that can provide an important strategy to improve the selectivity for other reactions. Abstract:Electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction (CO2R) provides a promising pathway for sustainable generation of fuels and chemicals. Copper (Cu) electrocatalysts catalyse CO2R to valuable multicarbon (C2+) products, but their selectivity depends on the local microenvironment near the catalyst surface. Here we systematically explore and optimize this microenvironment using bilayer cation- and anion-conducting ionomer coatings to control the local pH (via Donnan exclusion) and CO2/H2O ratio (via ionomer properties), respectively. When this tailored microenvironment is coupled with pulsed electrolysis, further enhancements in the local ratio of CO2/H2O and pH are achieved, leading to selective C2+ production, which increases by 250% (with 90% Faradaic efficiency and only 4% H2) compared with static electrolysis over bare Cu. These results underscore the importance of tailoring the catalyst microenvironment as a means of improving overall performance in electrochemical syntheses. Copper catalyses electrochemical reduction of CO2 to valuable multicarbon products, but its selectivity depends on the local microenvironment near the catalyst surface. Here, the authors explore and optimize this environment to improve performance using bilayer ionomer coatings to control the local pH and CO2/H2O ratio.

Abstract:CO2 electroreduction is a promising technique to convert renewable electricity and CO2 to high-value fuels and chemicals. Selectivity, energy efficiency, carbon efficiency and sustainability are the criteria for CO2 electroreduction techniques suitable for industrial application. With alkaline and neutral electrolytes, carbonate formation from CO2 leads to low carbon efficiency. High energy consumption to regenerate alkaline electrolyte and high resistance of neutral electrolyte cause low energy efficiency. Recently, CO2 reduction with acidic electrolyte becomes a hot topic due to its potential to increase carbon efficiency and energy efficiency. Improving the selectivity towards CO2 reduction is challenging in acidic condition. Diverse approaches were proposed to suppress H+ reduction and promote CO2 reduction. However, fundamental issues about cation effect and local pH effect on CO2 reduction in acidic condition are still under debate. Moreover, bicarbonate precipitation in gas diffusion electrode limits the sustainability with acidic electrolyte. This review tries to rationalize the reported strategies to improve the selectivity towards CO2 reduction in acidic condition from mass transport and electrode reactions. Different approaches, including adding alkali cations, surface decoration, nanostructuring, and electronic structure modulation, are designed based on these two aspects. This review also introduces the recent progress in CO2 electroreduction with metal cation-free acidic electrolyte. This strategy is deemed to improve the sustainability.

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 to fuels or valuable chemicals is a promising way to mitigate the greenhouse effect. Herein, ultrathin In2Se3 nanosheets are reported as a robust catalyst for CO2-to-CO conversion with a faradaic efficiency of 89% and a stable activity of > 24 h. Theoretical investigations show that the exposed electronegative Se atoms stabilize *COOH and, thus, facilitate CO2-to-CO conversion.

Abstract:The worldwide unrestrained emission of carbon dioxide (CO2) has caused serious environmental pollution and climate change issues. For the sustainable development of human civilization, it is very desirable to convert CO2 to renewable fuels through clean and economical chemical processes. Recently, electrocatalytic CO2 conversion is regarded as a prospective pathway for the recycling of carbon resource and the generation of sustainable fuels. In this review, recent research advances in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction are summarized from both experimental and theoretical aspects. The referred electrocatalysts are divided into different classes, including metal-organic complexes, metals, metal alloys, inorganic metal compounds and carbon-based metal-free nanomaterials. Moreover, the selective formation processes of different reductive products, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO-), monoxide carbon (CO), formaldehyde (HCHO), methane (CH4), ethylene (C2H4), methanol (CH3OH), ethanol (CH3CH2OH), etc. are introduced in detail, respectively. Owing to the limited energy efficiency, unmanageable selectivity, low stability, and indeterminate mechanisms of electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, there are still many tough challenges need to be addressed. In view of this, the current research trends to overcome these obstacles in CO2 electroreduction field are summarized. We expect that this review will provide new insights into the further technique development and practical applications of CO2 electroreduction.

Abstract:The increasing CO 2 emissions and accompanying climate challenges have boosted the exploration of candidate pathways for storing and utilizing renewable carbon resources. Electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECO 2 R) has been proven as a promising technology for artificial carbon fixation. Nevertheless, the unsatisfactory multi-carbon (C 2+ ) product selectivity hinders its widespread use. Recently, the indirect route via electrochemical CO reduction (ECOR) to C 2+ products has become a potential alternative through the combination with ECO 2 R. In this review, we briefly summarize the most recent and instructive research in the ECOR development process from advanced ECOR catalysts and reaction mechanisms. Furthermore, the challenges and outlooks based on current understanding in this field are expounded. These insights and perspectives offer meaningful guidance for grasping ECOR and designing relevant catalysts with enhanced C 2+ product selectivity.

Abstract:CO2 electroreduction is a prospective avenue to produce carbon-based fuels, yet atomic-level insights on the mechanistic origin of catalytic selectivity remains elusive. Taking the Ag and Cu2O@Ag electrocata-lysts as examples, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy in conjunction with theoretical calculations reveal that the hollow-nanostructured Ag promotes CO production through a lower energy barrier of the rate-limiting *CO2 to *COOH, while the Cu2O-Ag boundaries in the honeycomb-like Cu2O@Ag rein-force CO2 physisorption and chemisorption on the catalyst surface. The interfaces of Cu2O@Ag facilitate CO hydrogenation and CAC coupling, opening alternative reaction pathways toward CH4 and C2H4.
