Abstract:Green hydrogen produced through electrochemical water splitting plays an important role for the global mission of carbon neutrality. Electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) as an important step in water electrolysis have been the subject of extensive study over the past decades. However, the low efficiency of the electrolytic device, caused by the slow kinetic reaction and the reliance on noble metal catalysts such as Pt, has limited its widespread application. Owing to its excellent conductivity, high stability, and tunable composition, nano-alloyed materials have been extensively studied in HER. This article starts with an overview of the thermodynamics, kinetics, and pertinent electronic and structural descriptors essential for HER. Combining the structure-activity relationship of nano-alloy with electrochemical reaction kinetics, the construction principles for nano-alloyed HER electrocatalysts (NAEs) are emphasized. Then, the reasonable construction, mechanistic studies, and performance enhancement of electrocatalysts are deeply discussed based on structure and composition tuning. Finally, challenges and possibilities for reasonable design of highly-efficient NAEs are proposed. This review aims to deepen the understanding of the relationship between structure and electrochemical performance in alloy systems, providing guidance for the design of HER nano-alloyed materials with excellent activity and durability.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered to be an ideal safe and clean energy source, which can be produced by water splitting. The high overpotential of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is one of the bottleneck issues for the practical application of water splitting, where high-efficiency electrocatalysts are thus usually required to accommodate and facilitate the reaction. In recent years, a rapid rise in the HER electrocatalysts has been witnessed, especially nanostructured materials. Noble metals are generally regarded as the most effective electrocatalysts for HER, while some other electrocatalysts based on non-noble transition metals, including alloys, chalcogenides, phosphides, carbides and nitrides, can even approach the HER efficiency of noble metal benchmarks. This paper mainly introduces the basic principles of the HER process, evaluates different categories of nanostructured electrocatalytic materials, providing guidance for the design and fabrication of nanostructured HER catalysts. Moreover, recent progress and future research directions regarding the performance of metallic nanostructured materials are also discussed.Graphic

Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The growing demand for hydrogen and the effectiveness of alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM) electrolyzers has led to an increased interest in finding lower cost alternatives to traditional noble metal electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). High-entropy alloy (HEA) electrocatalysts have received significant attention due to their properties such as high configurational entropy and high lattice distortion which can help promote electrocatalytic reactions. In this work, an aqueously electrodeposited and structurally amorphous NiFeCoMoW HEA was synthesized and investigated for its HER performance. The importance of factors such as surface morphology, chemical composition, and microstructure on the electrochemical activity and stability was also explored. Increased electrochemical activity was observed in the HEA compared to electrodeposited binary alloys, owing to a larger number of active sites with differing electronic structures and adsorption energies. NiFeCoMoW HEAs electrodeposited at a pH of 5 exhibited the smallest Tafel slope of all the tested samples with an average Tafel slope of 83 mV/dec. Meanwhile, the lowest overpotential for 10 mA/cm(GA)(2) of 171 mV was observed in the samples prepared at pH 6, which possessed a higher roughness factor (RF). These results highlight the potential of using HEAs for electrocatalytic applications and demonstrate aqueous electrodeposition as a simple, inexpensive, and scalable synthesis method to produce effective HEA electrocatalysts.

Abstract:As a clean energy source, hydrogen plays a critical role in the global mission to achieve carbon neutrality. Among varied hydrogen production techniques, water electrolysis driven by clean energy, such as solar or wind energy, is the most promising and viable option, with the advantages of celerity, high efficiency, cleanliness, and sustainability. However, this process necessitates a highly active and durable hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalyst to enhance the overall reaction efficiency. This article thoroughly reviews the recent development of electrocatalysts exhibiting high-performance HER. In particular, a comprehensive look at noble metals platinum (Pt), ruthenium (Ru), iridium (Ir), and non-noble metals, including sulfides, carbides, nitrides and phosphides is taken. Synthesis strategies, methods for enhancing performance, and the correlation between structure, composition, and catalytic performance are discussed. We also pay particular attention to density functional theory (DFT) calculations to reveal the mechanisms behind the improvement of HER performance. Finally, the critical challenges associated with electrochemical water splitting and propose coping strategies are presented.
Highly catalytic active PtNiCu nanochains for hydrogen evolution reaction

Abstract:Efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction are key issues for sustainable energy technologies such as solar fuel synthesis and fuel cells. Here we report that trimetallic PtNiCu nanochains can function as efficient hydrogen evolution reactions (HER) electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution. In acidic media, the nanostructure produces a current density of 200mAcm−2 at the overpotential of 0.075V, which is almost 5 times more electrocatalytically active than the state-of-the-art Pt catalysts on the basis of equivalent Pt mass and is the best among the reported Pt-based materials for HER. Electrochemical and structure characterization studies indicate that the composition-dependent high hydrogen evolution activity is resulted from both the synergistic capabilities of the metal atoms and the abundance of clean active facets on the edge sites. Our findings suggest that controlling the catalytic reaction via well-defined pathways on the multi-metallic alloys provides a great opportunity to improve their catalytic properties for hydrogen evolution reactions.

In the np-NiAlTi/Al3Ti hybrid, amorphous NiAlTi serves as the active phase, while the conductive Al3Ti support affords an effective electron pathway. Meanwhile, the nanoporous electrode possesses abundant active sites and large contact areas for an efficient HER. As a result, the np-NiAlTi/Al3Ti hybrid delivers a small overpotential of 73 mV at the current density of 10 mA cm(-2), along with good stability in alkaline media. Our work would provide a feasible strategy to explore efficient and low-cost electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:Noble metal (Pt, Ru, and Ir)-based electrocatalysts are currently considered the most active materials for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Although they have been associated with high cost, easy agglomeration, and poor stability during the HER reaction, recent efforts to intentionally tailor noble-metal-based catalysts have led to promising improvements, with lower cost and superior activity, which are critical to achieving large-scale production of pure hydrogen. In this mini-review, we focus on the recent advances in noble-metal-based HER electrocatalysts. In particular, the synthesis strategies to enhance cost-effectiveness and the catalytic activity for HER are highlighted.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy serves as an ideal alternative energy carrier to fossil fuels in the future clean energy system. The hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) occurring at the cathode of water electrocatalysis has been considered as a promising approach to produce hydrogen over the past decades due to zero carbon emission. To gain a deep insight into the advanced electrocatalyst, herein, we provide a comprehensive review with an emphasis on the recent state-of-the-art advances of HER electrocatalysts in view of controlling their local electronic structure, creating defect nanostructures, exposing active sites, altering d band center, and constructing heterogeneous structure. Initially, we start with a brief introduction of the fundamental electrocatalytic mechanisms and the critical electrochemical parameters for evaluating HER. Then, we systemically discuss three representative classes of electrocatalysts, comprised of highly active noble-metal including single atom, nanoparticles, and clusters, earth-abundant transition metal such as transition metal sulfides, phosphides, carbides, nitrides, and oxides, and metal-free functional nanomaterials involving different dimensions of carbonaceous nanomaterials, boron nitrogen, and phosphorous non-carbonaceous nanomaterials by adjusting their tunable electronic structures and architectures/morphologies with a particular emphasis on the structure–function relationships. Finally, we point out the current challenges and opportunities in view of achieving highly active and stable electrocatalysts towards practical applications.

Abstract:Developing a highly efficient non-precious transition metal-based electrocatalyst via a facile approach toward the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is critical for large-scale hydrogen production but still remains challenging. Herein, a cost-effective electrochemical deposition strategy is rationally proposed to construct amorphous quaternary FeCoNiCu alloy nanosheets supported on nickel foam (NF) towards this challenge. Benefiting from the synergistic effect of multi-metal atoms interaction and the high exposure of active sites caused by abundant open voids, the as-synthesized FeCoNiCu/NF electrode exhibits high catalytic activity and robustness toward HER in alkaline solution, requiring an overpotential of only 35 mV to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2. This study may pave a new avenue to design advanced electrocatalyst for energy conversion.

Abstract:Surface high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy on hierarchical nanoporous Ni skeleton holds great promise as low‐cost efficient electrocatalysts with multisite electroactive center for ampere‐level current‐density hydrogen evolution. Associated with column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton that facilitates electron transfer/mass transportation and enables highly accessible and abundant electroactive sites, self‐supported monolithic nanoporous high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy exhibits superior nonacidic hydrogen‐evolution reaction electrocatalysis with exceptional stability. Developing robust nonprecious metal‐based electrocatalysts toward hydrogen evolution reaction is crucial for large‐scale hydrogen production via electrochemical water splitting. Herein, surface high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy on column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton is reported as multisite electrocatalyst for highly efficient hydrogen evolution in nonacidic environments by making use of surface heterogeneous atoms with distinct hydrogen and hydroxyl adsorption behaviors to accelerate water dissociation and mediate adsorption of hydrogen intermediates for combination into molecules. Associated with the column‐nanostructured nanoporous Ni skeleton that facilitates electron transfer/mass transportation and enables highly accessible and abundant electroactive sites, self‐supported monolithic nanoporous high‐entropy NiFeCoCuTi alloy electrode exhibits superior nonacidic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysis, with low onset overpotentials and Tafel slopes. It only takes overpotential of as low as ≈209 mV to deliver ultrahigh current density of 2 A cm−2, along with exceptional stability for more than 240 h, in 1 m KOH electrolyte. These outstanding properties make nanoporous NiFeCoCuTi high‐entropy alloy (HEA) electrode attractive candidate as cathode material in the water electrolysis for large‐scale hydrogen production and suggest HEAs as ideal platform to develop multisite electrocatalysts.

Abstract:The pros and cons of the strategies to construct carbon‐based noble metal hydrogen evolution reaction catalysts including loading noble metals on carbon substrates and carbonizing noble metal/carbon precursor mixtures are analyzed. Subsequently, the methods to optimize the hydrogen adsorption energy and proton transport via structure engineering are summarized. Finally, the challenges for practical water electrolysis are discussed. The electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) that converts renewable electricity into storable hydrogen, a sustainable and clean energy carrier, provides a promising method to mitigate the energy crisis and environmental pollution. In general, noble‐metal‐based nanomaterials (including Pt, Rh, Ru, Ir, etc.) have drawn tremendous research attention in the context of the HER because of their nearly optimal bindings to hydrogen, robust stability and tunable physical/chemical properties. Particularly, carbon as a substrate not only offers a stabilizing and conductive matrix, but also impacts the electronic structure of the supported metal by interfacial interaction, necessitating a detailed understanding. To speed up the sluggish kinetics of the HER, the design and construction of efficient electrocatalysts is of crucial importance. Herein, a comprehensive review of the recent advances in carbon‐supported noble‐metal electrocatalysts is presented, focusing on their synthetic strategies, structural analyses, and applications in HER electrocatalysis. Specifically, the correlation between the electronic structure and activity is discussed. Furthermore, a perspective is offered highlighting the challenges and opportunities for development of highly efficient HER electrocatalysts, with the aim for widespread utilization of practical water electrolyzers toward green hydrogen production.

Abstract:This paper provides a comprehensive review of the preparation methods for high‐entropy alloys (HEAs) and analyzes their application as catalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). High‐entropy alloys (HEAs) materials, as promising nanomaterials, have garnered significant attention from researchers due to their excellent performance in the field of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The four core effects of HEAs, including the high‐entropy effect, severe lattice distortion effect, sluggish diffusion effect, and cocktail effect, are pivotal in underpinning their remarkable mechanical and thermodynamic properties. Nevertheless, the intricate geometric and electronic structures of HEAs make their catalytic mechanisms exceptionally complex and challenging to decipher. In particular, a thorough analysis of the underlying factors responsible for the outstanding catalytic activity, selectivity, and the ability to maintain stable hydrogen production, even at high current densities, in HEAs is lacking. To provide a systematic exploration of the design and application of HEAs in HER systems, this review commences with an examination of the physicochemical properties of HEAs. It covers a wide range of topics, including the synthesis methods of HEAs, and the major reaction mechanisms of HERs, and presents innovative methods and approaches for designing HEAs specifically in the context of HERs.

Abstract:Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from alkaline electrolytes is one of most promising methods for producing hydrogen. The remaining obstacles include the development of high performance and earth-abundant electrocatalysts which can be cost-effectively fabricated in large-scale. Ni-Mo based materials are one of potential candidates which might meet the most needs. In this review, we summarize the latest progress in Ni-Mo based HER catalysts in alkaline electrolytes from theoretical calculation to experimental results. This work also summarizes several different strategies to enhance the HER rate. Finally, the future perspective of the next generation electrocatalysts is discussed.

Abstract:The rational design of an efficient and inexpensive electrocatalyst based on earth-abundant 3d transition metals (TMs) for the hydrogen evolution reaction still remains a significant challenge in the renewable energy area. Herein, a novel and effective approach is developed for synthesizing ultrafine Co nanoparticles encapsulated in nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) grafted onto both sides of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (Co@N-CNTs@rGO) by direct annealing of GO-wrapped core-shell bimetallic zeolite imidazolate frameworks. Benefiting from the uniform distribution of Co nanoparticles, the in-situ-formed highly graphitic N-CNTs@rGO, the large surface area, and the abundant porosity, the as-fabricated Co@N-CNTs@rGO composites exhibit excellent electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity. As demonstrated in electrochemical measurements, the composites can achieve 10 mA cm-2 at low overpotential with only 108 and 87 mV in 1 m KOH and 0.5 m H2 SO4 , respectively, much better than most of the reported Co-based electrocatalysts over a wide pH range. More importantly, the synthetic strategy is versatile and can be extended to prepare other binary or even ternary TMs@N-CNTs@rGO (e.g., Co-Fe@N-CNTs@rGO and Co-Ni-Cu@N-CNTs@rGO). The strategy developed here may open a new avenue toward the development of nonprecious high-performance HER catalysts.
Hierarchical CoNiO2 Microflowers Assembled by Mesoporous Nanosheets as Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:In order to alleviate the energy crisis and propel a low-carbon economy, hydrogen (H2) plays an important role as a renewable cleaning resource. To break the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) bottleneck, we need high-efficiency electrocatalysts. Based on the synergistic effect between bimetallic oxides, hierarchical mesoporous CoNiO2 nanosheets can be fabricated. Combining physical representations with electrochemical measurements, the resultant CoNiO2 catalysts present the hierarchical microflowers morphology assembled by mesoporous nanosheets. The ultrathin two-dimensional nanosheets and porous surface characteristics provide the vast channels for electrolyte injection, thus endowing CoNiO2 the outstanding HER performance. The excellent performance with a fewer onset potential of 94 mV, a smaller overpotential at 10 mA cm-2, a lower Tafel slope of 109 mV dec-1 and better stability after 1000 cycles makes CoNiO2 better than that of metallic Co and metallic Ni.

Abstract:Low cost and highly efficient non-noble metal electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are crucially important for the commercial production of hydrogen. In the present work, we prepared a nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst using a facile electrochemical dealloying method. Due to the large surface area, fast gas releasing, and the synergistic effects of NiO and Al3Ni2, the nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst exhibits remarkable HER activity with the overpotential of 66 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and good long-time stability in alkaline conditions. The nanoporous NiO/Al3Ni2 catalyst has higher current density than the commercial Pt/C under high overpotential over 105 mV. Ni sites on the exposed active (100) surface of Al3Ni2 exhibit a moderate hydrogen adsorption energy. NiO effectively promotes water splitting and prevents intermediate poisoning on the Al3Ni2 active sites. Al3Ni2 improves the conductivity of the catalyst. This work provides a guidance for the design and development of non-noble HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered a good clean and renewable energy substitute for fossil fuels. The major obstacle facing hydrogen energy is its efficacy in meeting its commercial-scale demand. One of the most promising pathways for efficient hydrogen production is through water-splitting electrolysis. This requires the development of active, stable, and low-cost catalysts or electrocatalysts to achieve optimized electrocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting. The objective of this review is to survey the activity, stability, and efficiency of various electrocatalysts involved in water splitting. The status quo of noble-metal- and non-noble-metal-based nano-electrocatalysts has been specifically discussed. Various composites and nanocomposite electrocatalysts that have significantly impacted electrocatalytic HERs have been discussed. New strategies and insights in exploring nanocomposite-based electrocatalysts and utilizing other new age nanomaterial options that will profoundly enhance the electrocatalytic activity and stability of HERs have been highlighted. Recommendations on future directions and deliberations for extrapolating information have been projected.

Abstract:The article summarizes the recent progress in the application of noble metal‐based alloy electrocatalysts in the field of hydrogen production by water electrolysis in recent years. The related mechanisms and issues, synthesis methods, and concrete case analysis of electrocatalysts design are discussed. In addition, the prospects, opportunities, and challenges facing noble metal‐based alloy electrocatalysts are discussed. Hydrogen energy is regarded as the ultimate energy source for future human society, and the preparation of hydrogen from water electrolysis is recognized as the most ideal way. One of the key factors to achieve large‐scale hydrogen production by water splitting is the availability of highly active and stable electrocatalysts. Although non‐precious metal electrocatalysts have made great strides in recent years, the best hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts are still based on noble metals. Therefore, it is particularly important to improve the overall activity of the electrocatalysts while reducing the noble metals load. Alloying strategies can shoulder the burden of optimizing electrocatalysts cost and improving electrocatalysts performance. With this in mind, recent work on the application of noble metal‐based alloy electrocatalysts in the field of hydrogen production from water electrolysis is summarized. In this review, first, the mechanism of HER is described; then, the current development of synthesis methods for alloy electrocatalysts is presented; finally, an example analysis of practical application studies on alloy electrocatalysts in hydrogen production is presented. In addition, at the end of this review, the prospects, opportunities, and challenges facing noble metal‐based alloy electrocatalysts are tried to discuss.
