Research progress on lingual straight wire orthodontic techniques

Abstract:Lingual orthodontic is superior to labial orthodontic in aesthetics. But the lingual mushroom-form arch wire appliance is complex to use, and has difficulty in three-dimensional control of teeth. In order to solve the above problems, the researchers have realized straight lingual wires by changing the thickness of bonding materials, changing the shape of the bracket, and changing the vertical plane of the archwire. Lingual straight wire appliance like STb, Lingual jet, ALIAS, In-Ovation-L were clinically applied gradually. Lingual straight wire orthodontic techniques allows the application of refined continuous arch wire, which shortens clinical operation time and reduces cost. The continuous arch form improves the efficiency of tooth movement by avoiding round tripping. It also reduces the lingual inclination of the anterior tooth at the stage of space closure because some of the straight wire bracket slot is closer to the center of resistance. The characteristics mentioned above are the advantages of the straight lingual appliances. But there are still more to be answered in its orthodontic biomechanics.
