Abstract:Photovoltaic (PV) power generation is maintaining a high growth trend as the demand for renewable energy increases. A number of studies have found that PV power generation has a significant impact on microclimate in local scales and on evapotranspiration (ET) from water bodies. However, there is a lack of research on the large-scale effects of PV panels on terrestrial ET. Therefore, this study takes China as the study area, aiming to investigate the effect of PV panel coverage on terrestrial ET on a large scale. Using the MOD16 datasets, we validated the changes in ET from 2001 to 2023 in ten sites of China with PV panel installation. ET was found to be significantly decrease of ET in areas covered by PV panels after installation, with average ET reductions ranging from 3 to 18 percent. Using the Penman-Monteith method, we investigated the variation of potential ET under different PV coverage ratios. The results show that the potential evapotranspiration (PET) from both ground surface and water surface shows a significant decreasing trend with the increase of PV panel coverage. For 10 %, 30 %, and 50 % coverage, the reduction ratios of PET caused by ground-mounted PVs were 6.76 %, 20.28 %, and 33.80 %, respectively; and the reduction ratios of PET caused by water-surface PVs were 7.92 %, 23.74 %, and 39.56 %, respectively. We further assessed the impact of PV panels on terrestrial water saving with actual ET. The results show that the introduction of PV panels resulted in a remarkable gain in terrestrial water saving. With 10 %, 30 %, and 50 % PV panel coverage, it will save an average of 416.01 km 3 , 1,082.12 km 3 , and 1,748.49 km 3 of water per year in China, which is equivalent to the annual water consumption of a population of 0.99 billion, 2.58 billion, and 4.17 billion, respectively. Through a large-scale study, this study found that the deployment of PV panels will significantly reduce terrestrial ET, especially in the southern China. We hope this study can provide an important reference for PV panel layout and water resource management.
