Abstract:Signature of dynamics resonances were observed in the benchmark polyatomic F+CH 4 /CHD 3 reactions more than a decade ago, however, the dynamical origin of the resonances is still not clear due to lack of reliable quantum dynamics study on accurate potential energy surfaces. Here, we report a six-dimensional state-to-state quantum dynamics study on the F+CHD 3 →HF+CD 3 reaction on a highly accurate potential energy surface. Pronounced oscillatory structures are observed in the total and product rovibrational-state-resolved reaction probabilities. Detailed analysis reveals that these oscillating features originate from the Feshbach resonance states trapped in the peculiar well on the HF( v '=3)-CD 3 vibrationally adiabatic potential caused by HF chemical bond softening. Most of the resonance structures on the reaction probabilities are washed out in the well converged integral cross sections, leaving only one distinct peak at low collision energy. The calculated HF vibrational state-resolved ICS for CD 3 ( v =0) agree quantitatively with the experimental results, especially the branching ratio, but the theoretical CD 3 umbrella vibration state distribution is found much hotter than the experiment.

Abstract:The transition state governs how chemical bonds form and cleave during a chemical reaction and its direct characterization is a long-standing challenge in physical chemistry. Transition state spectroscopy experiments based on negative-ion photodetachment provide a direct probe of the vibrational structure and metastable resonances that are characteristic of the reactive surface. Dynamical resonances are extremely sensitive to the topography of the reactive surface and provide an exceptional point of comparison with theory. Here we study the seven-atom F + CH 3 OH → HF + CH 3 O reaction using slow photoelectron velocity-map imaging spectroscopy of cryocooled CH 3 OHF − anions. These measurements reveal spectral features associated with a manifold of vibrational Feshbach resonances and bound states supported by the post-transition state potential well. Quantum dynamical calculations yield excellent agreement with the experimental results, allow the assignment of spectral structure and demonstrate that the key dynamics of complex bimolecular reactions can be captured with a relatively simple theoretical framework.
Dynamical resonances in the fluorine atom reaction with the hydrogen molecule

Abstract:[Reaction: see text]. The concept of transition state has played a crucial role in the field of chemical kinetics and reaction dynamics. Resonances in the transition state region are important in many chemical reactions at reaction energies near the thresholds. Detecting and characterizing isolated reaction resonances, however, have been a major challenge in both experiment and theory. In this Account, we review the most recent developments in the study of reaction resonances in the benchmark F + H 2 --> HF + H reaction. Crossed molecular beam scattering experiments on the F + H 2 reaction have been carried out recently using the high-resolution, highly sensitive H-atom Rydberg tagging technique with HF rovibrational states almost fully resolved. Pronounced forward scattering for the HF (nu' = 2) product has been observed at the collision energy of 0.52 kcal/mol in the F + H 2 (j = 0) reaction. Quantum dynamical calculations based on two new potential energy surfaces, the Xu-Xie-Zhang (XXZ) surface and the Fu-Xu-Zhang (FXZ) surface, show that the observed forward scattering of HF (nu' = 2) in the F + H 2 reaction is caused by two Feshbach resonances (the ground resonance and first excited resonance). More interestingly, the pronounced forward scattering of HF (nu' = 2) at 0.52 kcal/mol is enhanced considerably by the constructive interference between the two resonances. In order to probe the resonance potential more accurately, the isotope substituted F + HD --> HF + D reaction has been studied using the D-atom Rydberg tagging technique. A remarkable and fast changing dynamical picture has been mapped out in the collision energy range of 0.3-1.2 kcal/mol for this reaction. Quantum dynamical calculations based on the XXZ surface suggest that the ground resonance on this potential is too high in comparison with the experimental results of the F + HD reaction. However, quantum scattering calculations on the FXZ surface can reproduce nearly quantitatively the resonance picture of the F + HD reaction observed in the experiment. It is clear that the dynamics of the F + HD reaction below the threshold was dominated by the ground resonance state. Furthermore, the forward scattering HF (nu' = 3) channel from the F + H 2 ( j = 0) reaction was investigated and was attributed mainly to a slow-down mechanism over the centrifugal exit barrier, with small contributions from a shape resonance mechanism in a narrow collision energy range. A striking effect of the reagent rotational excitation on resonance was also observed in F + H 2 ( j = 1), in comparison with F + H 2 ( j = 0). From these concerted experimental and theoretical studies, a clear physical picture of the reaction resonances in this benchmark reaction has emerged, providing a textbook example of dynamical resonances in elementary chemical reactions.

Abstract:Full quantum state resolved scattering of the F atom reaction with H2(j=0) and H2(j=1) was investigated at the collision energies of 0.19 and 0.56kcal∕mol. Dramatic difference between the dynamics for the F+H2(j=0,1) reactions at both collision energies have been observed. Forward scattering HF(v′=2) products have been observed unambiguously for the F+H2(j=1) reaction at low collision energies, which was attributed to the Feshbach resonances. This study provides a unique case of reaction resonances involving a rotationally excited reagent.

Abstract:In recent decades, significant progress has been made in the precise theoretical investigation of gas-phase chemical reactions. Presently, a major challenge in the field of quantum dynamics is the development of precise methodologies for studying chemical reactions involving more than four atoms. As a typical multi-atomic reaction system, the F+CH 4 reaction and its isotopic substitution reactions have attracted widespread attention from both experimental and theoretical perspectives in recent years. Experimental studies on the reaction of F+CHD 3 revealed that the stretching vibration excitation of the C-H bond inhibits the bond dissociation, favoring the formation of DF+CHD 2 products channel. In this study, we employed a seven-dimensional quantum time-dependent wave packet method to investigate the dynamics of the F+CHD 3 reaction in both the reactant vibrational ground state and the first stretching excited state of the C-H bond. The paper analyzed reaction probabilities under different vibrational conditions, revealing that when the collision energy is below 0.06 eV, the reaction probability curves exhibit numerous fast-oscillating peaks, supporting the experimentally suggested phenomena of dynamic resonance. At collision energies ranging from 0.06 eV to 0.3 eV, the reaction probability for the HF product channel in the vibrational excited state was lower than that in the ground state, consistent with experimental observations. Through the analysis of the time-independent wave functions of product channels under low-energy collision conditions, we have found that for reactions involving vibrational ground states, the HF products in the product asymptotic region and the reaction transition state region are in the v'=2 and v'=3 excited states of stretching vibration, respectively, consistent with previous experimental observations and six-dimensional quantum wave packet simulations. For reactions involving the first excited state of C-H stretching vibration, the HF products in the product asymptotic region and the reaction transition state region are both in the v'=3 excited state of stretching vibration, consistent with the results obtained based on energy analysis. Simulation results indicated that, in the case of low-energy collisions, the time-independent wave function for the C-H stretching vibrational excited state tends to be closer to the D atom side in the transition state region. This phenomenon was attributed to the more significant energy advantage of the vibrational excited state potential energy surface in the large collision angle region, explaining the inhibitory effect of stretching vibration excitation on the HF product channel. This study offers crucial theoretical support for interpreting experimental results and contributes to a deeper understanding of the influence of vibrational mode excitations on the dynamical processes in poly-atomic reactions.

Abstract:Reaction resonances, or transiently stabilized transition-state structures, have proven highly challenging to capture experimentally. Here, we used the highly sensitive H atom Rydberg tagging time-of-flight method to conduct a crossed molecular beam scattering study of the F + H 2 → HF + H reaction with full quantum-state resolution. Pronounced forward-scattered HF products in the v ′ = 2 vibrational state were clearly observed at a collision energy of 0.52 kcal/mol; this was attributed to both the ground and the first excited Feshbach resonances trapped in the peculiar HF( v ′ = 3)-H′ vibrationally adiabatic potential, with substantial enhancement by constructive interference between the two resonances.

Abstract:Reaction resonances are transiently trapped quantum states along the reaction coordinate in the transition state region of a chemical reaction that could have profound effects on the dynamics of the reaction. Obtaining an accurate reaction potential that holds these reaction resonance states and eventually modeling quantitatively the reaction resonance dynamics is still a great challenge. Up to now, the only viable way to obtain a resonance potential is through high-level ab initio calculations. Through highly accurate crossed-beam reactive scattering studies on isotope-substituted reactions, the accuracy of the resonance potential could be rigorously tested. Here we report a combined experimental and theoretical study on the resonance-mediated F + HD -> HF + D reaction at the full quantum state resolved level, to probe the resonance potential in this benchmark system. The experimental result shows that isotope substitution has a dramatic effect on the resonance picture of this important system. Theoretical analyses suggest that the full-dimensional FH2 ground potential surface, which was believed to be accurate in describing the resonance picture of the F + H-2 reaction, is found to be insufficiently accurate in predicting quantitatively the resonance picture for the F + HD -> HF + D reaction. We constructed a global potential energy surface by using the CCSD(T) method that could predict the correct resonance peak positions as well as the dynamics for both F + H-2 -> HF + H and F + HD -> HF + D, providing an accurate resonance potential for this benchmark system with spectroscopic accuracy.

Abstract:The reactions of F + CD4(v(b) = 0 and 1) were investigated over the collisional energy range of 1-4 kcal mol(-1), using a time-sliced velocity-imaging technique in a crossed-beam apparatus. Both the integral and differential cross sections are reported. Experimental evidence for signatures of quantum dynamical resonances, particularly in the differential cross section, is presented in the bend-excited (v(b) = 1) as well as the ground-state (v(b) = 0) reactions. Possible involvement of multiple resonances in the title reaction is conjectured, awaiting future theoretical confirmation.

Abstract:In the course of an extensive investigation aimed at understanding the detailed mechanism of a prototypical polyatomic reaction, several remarkable observations were uncovered. To interpret these findings, we surmise the existence of a reactive resonance in this polyatomic reaction. The concerned system is HO + CH4 H2O + CH3, of which the partial potential energy surface is constructed by the coupling between vibrational models and reactive coordinates. Then we explain the formation mechanism of the reactive resonance state by the partial potential energy surface. Finally, we estimated the lifetime of the resonance state, and it is about 45fs. The study of the reactive resonance in a polyatomic reaction is more than just an extension from a typical atom + diatom reaction. As shown here, it holds great promise to disentangle the elusive intramolecular vibrational dynamics of the transient collision complex in the critical transition-state region. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Theoretical Investigations on Photodissociation Dynamics of Deuterated Alkyl Halides CD3CH2F

Abstract:The product branching ratio between different products in multichannel reactions is as important as the over-all rate of reaction, both in terms of practical applications (e.g. models of combustion or atmosphere chemistry) in understanding the fundamental mechanisms of such chemical reactions. A global ground state potential energy surface for the dissociation reaction of deuterated alkyl halide CD3CH2F was computed at the CCSD(T)/CBS//B3LYP/aug-cc-pVDZ level of theory for all species. The decomposition of CD3CH2F is controversial concerning C−F bond dissociation reaction and molecular (HF, DF, H2, D2, HD) elimination reaction. Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus (RRKM) calculations were applied to compute the rate constants for individual reaction steps and the relative product branching ratios for the dissociation products were calculated using the steady-state approach. At the different energies studied, the RRKM method predicts that the main channel for DF or HF elimination from 1,2-elimination of CD3CH2F is through a four-center transition state, whereas D2 or H2 elimination from 1,1-elimination of CD3CH2F occurs through a direct three-center elimination. At 266, 248, and 193 nm photodissociation, the main product CD2CH2+DF branching ratios are computed to be 96.57%, 91.47%, and 48.52%, respectively; however, at 157 nm photodissociation, the product branching ratio is computed to be 16.11%. Based on these transition state structures and energies, the following photodissociation mechanisms are suggested: at 266, 248, 193 nm, CD3CH2F→absorption of a photon→TS5→the formation of the major product CD2CH2+DF; at 157 nm, CD3CH2F→absorption of a photon→D/F interchange of TS1→CDH2CDF→H/F interchange of TS2→CHD2CHDF→the formation of the major product CHD2+CHDF.
Quasi-classical Dynamics Investigations of the F + D2O → DF + OD Reaction on a Full Dimensional Accurate Potential Energy Surface

Abstract:The influence of vibrational excitations in the fully deuterated water (D2O) reactant on the reaction with the fluorine atom (F) is investigated using the full-dimensional quasi-classical trajectory method on an accurate ground electronic state potential energy surface. The results show that the reactant vibrational excitation in each mode of D2O has very complicated effect on the reactivity. At low collision energy, excitations in all three modes are more effective than collision energy in promoting the reaction, and their efficacies follow this order: symmetric stretching mode > anti-symmetric stretching mode > bending mode. At high collision energies, the efficacies of the bending and the anti-symmetric stretching modes are similar to or slightly less than collision energy, while the symmetric stretching mode is significantly less effective than collision energy. These intricate mode specificities in the F + D2O -> DF + OD reaction cannot be rationalized by the sudden vector projection model due to much denser density of states and faster intramolecular vibrational relaxation rate in D2O than in H2O. Abstract:This work is an extensive investigation of the F + CH3NH2 reaction dynamics using a newly-developed potential energy surface (PES). The full-dimensional spin–orbit (SO) corrected (MRCI+Q/aug-cc-pwCVDZ) PES is developed by the Robosurfer program package and the ManyHF method is used in order to fix the Hartree–Fock (HF) convergence issues in the entrance channel. On the surface, retrieved by the fitting of the iteratively extended set of the ManyHF-CCSD(T)-F12a/triple-zeta-quality and SO-corrected energy points, quasi-classical trajectory (QCT) simulations are run. By analyzing the opacity functions and integral cross sections (ICSs) of six reaction channels, the dynamics of the two most reactive hydrogen-abstraction reactions resulting in HF + CH2NH2/CH3NH products are selected for a thorough examination. Despite the statistically and thermodynamically expected results, the kinetically preferred amino hydrogen-abstraction is the dominant mechanism at low collision energies. The initial attack angle and scattering angle distributions are investigated as well. The post-reaction energy distributions show that the collision energy mostly converts into the translational energy of the products, while the reaction energy excites the vibration of the products. The computed vibrationally resolved rotational distributions and vibrational state distributions of the HF product are compared to experimental data, and the theory and experiment are found to be in good agreement.

Abstract:The photodetachment of the F- (HOCH3) anion, which sheds light on the post-transition-state dynamics of the F + CH3OH -> HF + CH3O reaction, is investigated using a reduced-dimensional quantum wave packet method on ab initio based potential energy surfaces for both the neutral and anionic species. The detachment of an electron in the anion precursor produces both bound and resonance species in a hydrogen-bonded potential well in the product channel, in qualitative agreement with the photoelectron-photofragment coincidence (PPC) spectrum. The measured photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectroscopy is reproduced by the quantum calculations. Our results indicated that the HF product is vibrationally excited, while the OCH3 product is internally cold, thus providing unambiguous assignments of the experimental spectrum. Abstract:Collisional resonances are important tools that have been used to modify interactions in ultracold gases, for realizing previously unknown Hamiltonians in quantum simulations 1 , for creating molecules from atomic gases 2 and for controlling chemical reactions. So far, such resonances have been observed for atom–atom collisions, atom–molecule collisions 3,4,5,6,7 and collisions between Feshbach molecules, which are very weakly bound 8,9,10 . Whether such resonances exist for ultracold ground-state molecules has been debated owing to the possibly high density of states and/or rapid decay of the resonant complex 11,12,13,14,15 . Here we report a very pronounced and narrow (25 mG) Feshbach resonance in collisions between two triplet ground-state NaLi molecules. This molecular Feshbach resonance has two special characteristics. First, the collisional loss rate is enhanced by more than two orders of magnitude above the background loss rate, which is saturated at the p -wave universal value, owing to strong chemical reactivity. Second, the resonance is located at a magnetic field where two open channels become nearly degenerate. This implies that the intermediate complex predominantly decays to the second open channel. We describe the resonant loss feature using a model with coupled modes that is analogous to a Fabry–Pérot cavity. Our observations provide strong evidence for the existence of long-lived coherent intermediate complexes even in systems without reaction barriers and open up the possibility of coherent control of chemical reactions.
