Abstract:The chemical compositions of low-pressure premixed flames of mixed hydrocarbon/oxygenate fuels were systematically investigated for a series of ethane/oxygen/argon flames blended with dimethoxymethane (DMM) or dimethyl carbonate (DMC). A total of nine flames were established at a carbon-to-oxygen ratio of C/O = 0.5 at 40 mbar. Ethane was replaced incrementally by either additive, so that the entire range from 100% ethane to 100% oxygenated fuel was covered. Temperature profiles for these flames were measured with laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) of the OH radical and quantitative mole fraction profiles for a large number of species were determined with flame-sampling molecular-beam mass spectrometry (MBMS) employing synchrotron vacuumultraviolet (VUV) photoionization (PI). The addition of DMM or DMC to the ethane flame showed a strong reduction of hydrocarbon intermediate (soot precursor) formation, which is consistent with the lack of any CC bond in these oxygenate fuels. Particularly, DMC showed more pronounced effects than DMM for the reduction of methane and C2 to C4 hydrocarbon species and for the early formation of CO2. As for the harmful oxygenated species, DMC favored the formation of formaldehyde, while DMM enhanced the production of both formaldehyde and methyl formate, which was attributed to the efficient CH3OCHO formation pathway through the decomposition of the CH3OCHOCH3 radical in DMM-fueled flame. The species mole fractions and the major trends of ethane replacement by oxygenates presented here will enable a more detailed understanding of the combined reaction sequences in such fuel blends and potentially enable the tests of modeling predictions for blends of hydrocarbon fuels and oxygenated additives to assess their emission potential.
