Abstract:As an emerged efficient polymerization methodology, the click polymerization plays a significant role in the area of polymer and materials sciences. Similar to the click reaction, the click polymerization enjoys the advantages of high efficiency, mild reaction conditions, and high regio- and stereoselectivity etc. In this highlight, we summarize the recent progress on click polymerizations, with focus on the alkyne-based ones. Abstract:Chemical transformations of small molecules have served as a rich source of reactions for the development of new polymerization processes, and "click" reaction has the potential to become a powerful polymerization technique. We herein give a brief account of the research efforts devoted to the development of click reaction into a new polymerization process. Remarkable progresses have been made in recent years in the exploration of metal-mediated and metal-free click polymerization systems and in the syntheses of linear and hyperbranched polytriazoles with regioregular molecular structures and advanced functional properties. We also discuss the existing limitations and challenges as well as the promising opportunities and directions in fostering the click polymerization into a versatile tool for the construction of new macromolecules with well-defined structures and multifaceted functionalities.

Abstract:Click chemistry has been rapidly developed in recent years. Among various established click reaction systems, the spontaneous amino-yne click reaction stands out. In addition to the general advantages associated with click reactions, amino-yne click reaction possesses extra merits, such as spontaneity of reactions, ubiquity of amines and cleavability of products with specific stimuli. Therefore, the amino-yne click reaction has become a useful tool and provided convenience for scientists in various fields since its first report in 2017. In this review, we capture the recent progress in the applications of amino-yne click reaction, which are briefly classified and reviewed in the fields of surface immobilization, drug delivery carrier design, hydrogel materials preparation and synthesis of polymers with unique structures.

Abstract:Click polymerization, a powerful synthetic technique to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions, is of crucial importance in the areas of polymer and material sciences. A variety of click polymerizations such as azide-alkyne, thiol-yne, amino-yne, and hydroxyl-yne reactions have been established, wherein the catalytic systems play an indispensable role in realizing these highly practical reactions based on triple-bond building blocks, as they directly influence the efficiencies of the click polymerizations and the performances of the resultant polymers. The vital employment of catalysts is reviewed and their developments from innovative discoveries to the eminent position are outlined. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Click reactions, with remarkable merits including high efficiency, atom economy, mild reaction conditions, good functionality tolerance, simple isolation process, and regio‐ and/or stereoselectivity, have drawn intense attention of polymer chemists and found widespread applications in polymer synthesis. Besides the famous Cu(I)‐catalyzed azide–alkyne click reaction, plentiful click reactions, such as Diels–Alder, thiol‐based, nonaldol carbonyl, amino‐yne, hydroxyl–yne, and sulfur(VI) fluoride‐exchange click reactions, have also been introduced into the field of polymer chemistry. With these efficient click reactions in hand, diverse functional groups can be readily incorporated into polymer chains to endow them with desired functionalities. Copolymers with complex structures, such as block, graft, star, and cyclic polymers, can be synthesized using click reaction as polymer conjugation method. These click reactions have also been developed into facile polymerization techniques, that is, click polymerization, for the direct synthesis of linear, hyperbranched, and cross‐linked polymers with various properties. This article intends to give a brief summary of click reactions applied in polymer synthesis, including preparation of polymers and postpolymerization modification of preformed polymers.

Abstract:Novel polymerizations based on alkyne monomers are becoming a powerful tool to construct polymers with unique structures and advanced functions in the areas of polymer and material sciences, and scientists have been attracted to develop a variety of novel polymerizations in recent decades. Therein, catalytic systems play an indispensable role in the influence of polymerization efficiencies and the performances of the resultant polymers. Concerning the shortcomings of metallic catalysts, much of the recent research focus has been on metal-free polymerization systems. In this paper, metal-free catalysts are classified and the corresponding polymerizations are reviewed, including organobase-catalyzed polymerizations, Lewis-acid-catalyzed polymerizations, as well as catalyst-free polymerizations. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in this area are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The atom-economical alkyne polyhydrothiolations of aromatic diynes (1) and dithiol (2) catalyzed by rhodium complexes proceed smoothly under mild conditions at room temperature in a regioselective manner, producing sole anti-Markovnikov products of poly(vinylene sulfide)s (3) with high molecular weights (M-w up to 31500) and stereoregularities (E content up to 100%) in high yields (up to 95.2%). The stereostructures of the polymers are readily tuned by engineering control on the sequential addition of monomers during the polymerization process and postmanipulation by light irradiation. All the poly(vinylene sulfide)s are soluble in common organic solvents and exhibit good film-forming ability and high optical transparency. The functional pendants in 1 have endowed 3 with novel properties such as aggregation-enhanced emission characteristics, optical limiting to harsh laser pulses, and ceramization capability to semiconducting nanoparticles. The polymers are thermal and UV curable, enabling the fabrication of fluorescent photopatterns. Their thin films show high refractive indices (n(D) = 1.75-1.70) and low optical dispersions (down to 0.006) at telecom important wavelengths. Their refractive indices vary with their stereostructures and can be modulated by UV irradiation.

Abstract:Polymers synthesized from acetylenic monomers often possess electronically unsaturated fused rings and thus show versatile optoelectronic properties and advanced functionalities. To expand the family of acetylenic polymers, development of new catalyst systems and synthetic routes is critically important. We summarize herein recent research progress on development of new methodologies towards functional polymers using alkyne building blocks since 2014. The polymerizations are categorized by the number of monomer components, namely homopolymerizations, two-component polymerizations, and multicomponent polymerizations. The properties and applications of acetylenic polymers, such as aggregation-induced emission, fluorescent photopatterning, light refraction, chemosensing, mechanochromism, chain helicity, etc., are also discussed.

Abstract:The 2022 Nobel Prize in chemistry brought the world's attention to click chemistry, a field as fascinating as its name, characterized by attractive features like high yield, stereospecificity, and broad scope. Since its inception, click chemistry has been synonymous with copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne reactions, owing to their remarkable advantages. However, as the field advanced, there has been a proactive search to develop metal-free alternatives for more biocompatible applications. This led to the extensive adoption of thiol-ene click reactions in the past decade. Yet, due to the growing requirement for polymers with complex architecture and functionality, in recent years, thiol-yne click reactions have come to the forefront with additional advantages over its ene counterparts, allowing the addition of two thiols to an alkyne. This review provides a concise overview of some of the significant developments in polymer synthesis and functionalization utilizing thiol-yne click chemistry. The focus is primarily on radical-mediated thiol-yne reactions, considering the substantial body of work in this area. Moreover, the review provides adequate discussion on other mechanistic pathways like nucleophilic and metal-catalyzed thiol-yne reactions that have gained traction recently.

Abstract:Click chemistry refers to the type of chemical reactions that occur between specific pairs of reagents, taking place under mild conditions with high stereoselectivity. These characteristics help chemists to construct very complex molecules in a relatively easy, quick, and precise manner. Polymers are widely used in daily life which are composed of repeating monomers. They can be designed and synthesized to meet certain characteristics to apply in real life. Click chemistry plays an essential role in creating new polymers, including modifying them afterwards. This paper introduces three typical click chemistry reactions in polymer synthesis and modifications, which include Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC), thiol-ene reaction, and Diels-Alder reaction. They all have positive impact in synthesizing and modifying polymer. CuAAC reaction is applied to make desired polymer with crosslinking structure or other desired protein structure and modify the product by introducing new functional groups. Thiol-ene reaction makes good use in producing adhesives, including light-curing adhesive and bio-based adhesive, as well as surface modification. Diels-Alder reaction provides new insights in the synthesized polymers. At last, double click chemistry, which is still at the stage of preliminary exploration, contributes to creating complex polymers. The use of click chemistry in polymers is powerful and useful, leading the development of advanced materials and upgrading synthesizing skills.
Spontaneous Amino-yne Click Polymerization: A Powerful Tool Toward Regio- and Stereospecific Poly(β-aminoacrylate)s

Abstract:Efficient synthesis of poly(enamine)s has been a great challenge because of their poor stability, poor solubility, and low molecular weights. In this work, a spontaneous amino-yne click polymerization for the efficient preparation of poly(enamine)s was established, which could proceed with 100% atom efficiency under very mild conditions without any external catalyst. Through systematic optimization of the reaction conditions, several soluble and thermally stable poly(β-aminoacrylate)s with high molecular weights (Mw up to 64400) and well-defined structures were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99%). Moreover, the polymerization can perform in a regio- and stereospecific fashion. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectra analysis revealed that solely anti-Markovnikov additive products with 100% E-isomer were obtained. The reaction mechanism was well demonstrated with the assistance of density functional theory calculations. In addition, by introducing the tetraphenylethene moiety, the resulting polymers exhibit unique aggregation-induced emission characteristics and could be applied in explosives detection and bioimaging. This polyhydroamination is a new type of click polymerization and opens up enormous opportunities for preparing functional polymeric materials.

Abstract:Although the concept of click chemistry was proposed more than twenty years ago, the research progress of click chemistry has emerged with great vitality, and this year's Nobel Prize in chemistry has once again highlighted the importance of the field of click chemistry. Click chemistry is a reaction in which a variety of molecules are quickly and reliably synthesized by piecing together small units. In particular, it emphasizes the development of new combinatorial chemistry methods based on the synthesis of carbon-heteroatomic bonds and the simple and efficient acquisition of molecular diversity through these reactions. Based on the superior reaction characteristics of click chemistry, click chemistry methods for production are advancing toward precision, simplicity, and high returns, especially in producing polymer materials and some bright biomedical applications. Here, we describe the development logic of typical click reactions with different substrates and catalysts. The latest technologies of click chemistry in the structure control and functional properties of polymers, as well as in the field of biomedicine and its expanding applications, are discussed. Finally, we identify the challenges of click chemistry in reaction mechanisms and engineering applications, and suggest potential future development directions in the future. Pyridinium-activated alkyne-based spontaneous amino-yne click polymerization toward n-pi conjugated polyelectrolytes

Abstract:Thanks to its high efficiency, excellent selectivity, simple operation and mild reaction conditions, the click polymerization has become a powerful tool for the synthesis of polymers. Among the reported click polymerizations, the activated alkyne-based one has drawn much attention. However, the preparation of conjugated polymers with charged main chains by this click polymerization has rarely been reported. Herein, by connection of ethynyl group with pyridinium moiety at its para-position, we present a new spontaneous click polymerization of pyridinium-activated diynes and aromatic diamines toward regioregular n-pi conjugated polyelectrolytes. The resultant polymers possess excellent thermal stability and good film forming properties. Thus, this pyridinium-activated alkyne-based spontaneous amino-yne click polymerization provides a powerful and straightforward tool for the preparation of main-chain charged n-pi conjugated polymers, which greatly expands the scope of click polymerization and opens up new avenues for the development of functional polymers.

Abstract:Alkyne-based click polymerizations have been well-established. However, in order to expand the family to synthesize polymers with new structures and novel properties, new types of click polymerizations are highly demanded. In this study, for the first time, we established a new efficient and powerful phenol-yne click polymerization. The activated diynes and diphenols could be facilely polymerized in the presence of the Lewis base catalyst of 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP) under mild reaction conditions. Regio-and stereoregular poly(vinylene ether ketone)s (PVEKs) with high molecular weights (up to 35200) were obtained in excellent yields (up to 99.0 %). The reaction mechanism was well explained under the assistance of density functional theory (DFT) calculation. Furthermore, since the vinyl ether sequence acts as a stable but acid-liable linkage, the polymers could be decomposed under acid conditions, rendering them applicable in biomedical and environmental fields.

Abstract:Polymers have become one of the major types of materials that are essential in our daily life. The controlled synthesis of value-added polymers with unique mechanical and chemical properties have attracted broad research interest. Metal–organic framework (MOF) is a class of porous material with immense structural diversity which offers unique advantages for catalyzing polymerization and oligomerization reactions including the uniformity of the catalytic active site, and the templating effect of the nano-sized channels. We summarized in this review the important recent progress in the field of MOF-catalyzed and MOF-templated polymerizations, to reveal the chemical principle and structural aspects of these systems and hope to inspire the future design of novel polymerization systems with improved activity and specificity.

Abstract:Ferrocene-containing polymers (FcPs) have attracted much research interest in the last decade, due to their unique properties and enormous applications. However, it is a great synthetic challenge to prepare FcPs before the advent of click chemistry. In this review, we summarized the recent research efforts on synthesizing FcPs through click reactions, which include click modification of preformed polymers and click polymerization of ferrocene (Fc) containing monomers. Due to the containing Fc moieties, the FcPs enjoy excellent redox activity, thermal stability, electrochemical property, and magnetism. Accordingly, they are promising to be used as electrochemical sensors, catalysts, magneto-ceramics, electrode modifiers, optical devices, etc.

Abstract:A wide variety of aliphatic polycarbonates are readily synthesized via the copolymerization of epoxides and carbon dioxide. Nevertheless, these polymeric materials have limited utility, in part because of their lack of functionalities. These shortcomings can be modified by way of post-polymerization processes. Prominent among these modifications are click chemistry. Relevant pathways for these materials are thiol-ene and alkyne-azide processes. Herein, we will discuss functionalization of polymers produced from the copolymerization of CO2 and epoxides, and the ring-opening polymerization of six-membered cyclic carbonates. We will also highlight several of the unique applications these novel materials are used for particularly in biomedical science.

Abstract:Comprehensive Summary As an emerging and efficient polymerization methodology, activated internal alkyne‐based polymerization has been considered as a powerful tool for the construction of polymers with diverse architectures and versatile functions. This review focuses on the recent progresses in the polymerization using mono‐activated, di‐activated, in‐situ generated, ring‐strained ethynyl groups as substrates, coupling with post‐modification on premade polymers containing activated internal ethynyl groups. Representative examples are used to illustrate the fundamental design strategy, the development of polymerization and post‐functionalization, along with the properties and potential applications of the prepared polymers. Moreover, the challenges and perspectives in terms of new‐type active alkynes, green polymerization methodology, tailored regio‐/stereoselectivity modulation, and potentially expanded application in this area are also discussed. Abstract:Click chemistry is combinatorial synthesis on the basis of heteroatom linkage C-X-C. As a typical example of sustainable and green organic synthetic strategy for constructing functional organic/polymeric materials, it has aroused extensive interest among materials scientists in recent years. In this review, some basic conceptions of click chemistry and its category are introduced, and various organic/polymeric optoelectrical materials, supramolecular assemblies, molecular machine and recognition systems, as well as stimuli-responsive systems are summarized in detail. Finally, Friedel-Crafts type click chemistry and its future trend are prospected.
