Abstract:Although a relatively new area of nanoscience, nonlinear plasmonics has become a fertile ground for the development and testing of new ideas pertaining to light–matter interaction under intense field conditions, ideas that have found a multitude of applications in surface science, active photonic nanodevices, near-field optical microscopy, and nonlinear integrated photonics. In this review, we survey the latest developments in nonlinear plasmonics in three-dimensional (metallic) and two-dimensional (graphene) nanostructures and offer an outlook on future developments in this field of research. In particular, we discuss the main theoretical concepts, experimental methods, and computational tools that are used together in modern nonlinear plasmonics to explore in an integrated manner nonlinear optical properties of metallic and graphene based nanostructures.

Abstract:Metal-coated, nanometer-size particles are modeled with a realistic distribution of coating thicknesses. General expressions are given for the local-field enhancement, absorption, and nonlinear optical response. In addition, heuristic arguments are used to determine the effects of a diffuse, rather than a sharp interface. The linear and nonlinear optical properties are discussed within the context of the effective medium theory for small volume fractions. An efficient method of solution is used with the flexibility to handle an arbitrary number of coatings.

Abstract:Metal-coated particles of nanometer dimensions can exhibit unusual optical properties due to the local-field enhancement mechanism. However, the properties are affected by uncontrollable factors that degrade the expected performance. In this paper we report theoretical results of coating thickness variations and diffuse interface effects on the optical absorption and the nonlinear optical response of particles with a CdS core and a silver coating. The linear and nonlinear optical properties are discussed within the context of the effective medium theory for small volume fractions.

In this review, we discuss some of the properties of individual and some assembled metallic nanoparticles with a focus on their interaction with cw and pulsed laser light of different energies. The potential application of the plasmon resonance as sensors is discussed.

Abstract:Nanoparticles are the key in nanotechnology and nano science, and are widely implemented in various domains, including biochemistry, biophysics, and nanoscience. Laser processing is the ideal method for manufacturing colloidal alloy nanoparticles with high-purity surface in a liquid by laser pulses, which is a sustainable and convenient production process. Molecular dynamics proves to be a powerful tool to provide a numerical insight for the laser interaction with material, and helps understand the mechanisms better. This paper discusses the application of molecular dynamics simulations in the characteristics and behaviors of laser processing metal nanoparticles. The cluster-based two-temperature model molecular dynamics emerges as an efficacious method for scrutinizing the microscopic dynamics of gold nanoparticles. The two-temperature model integrated with molecular dynamics model effectively emulates energy transfer and relaxation processes that underpin the ultimate nanoparticle size and morphology. Additionally, this paper delves into the interaction of laser with nanoparticles suspended in liquid and the influence of metal film thickness on nanoparticle size and distribution. Furthermore, the paper explains the impact of the liquid medium and laser energy on nanoparticle morphology, size, and properties. In summary, this review offers a comprehensive synopsis of recent advancements in molecular dynamics simulations of laser-processed metal nanoparticles.

Abstract:Nanomaterials have demonstrated excellent mechanical, thermal, optical, and electrical properties in various fields, including 1D carbon nanotubes, as well as 2D materials starting from graphene. Metal-based nanomaterials, mainly divided into metal and metal oxide nanoparticles, also gradually come into the sight of ultrafast photonics applications due to the outstanding optical properties. The optical properties of metal nanoparticles can be enhanced by the interaction between conduction electrons with electric fields that is called surface plasmon resonance. As for metal oxide nanoparticles, optical properties are closely related to bandgap structures. When it comes to transition metal oxides, other phenomena also play important roles in optical absorption such as spin inversion and excitons of iron. Moreover, preparation methods of materials are also crucial for their properties and further applications. Therefore, in this review, commonly used physical and chemical fabrication methods for metal-based nanomaterials are first introduced. Then the optical properties of typical metal and metal oxide nanoparticles are discussed specifically. In addition, the applications of metal-based nanomaterials in ultrafast lasers based on mode-locked and Q-switched techniques are also summarized. Finally, a summary and outlook toward the synthesis, optical properties, and applications in ultrafast photonics of metal-based nanomaterials are presented.

Abstract:Nanoparticles of noble metals belong to the most extensively studied colloidal systems in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Due to continuing progress in the synthesis of nanoparticles with controlled morphologies, the exploration of unique morphology-dependent properties has gained momentum. Anisotropic features in nonspherical nanoparticles make them ideal candidates for enhanced chemical, catalytic, and local field related applications. Nonspherical plasmon resonant nanoparticles offer favorable properties for their use as analytical tools, or as diagnostic and therapeutic agents. This Review highlights morphology-dependent properties of nonspherical noble metal nanoparticles with a focus on localized surface plasmon resonance and local field enhancement, as well as their applications in various fields including Raman spectroscopy, fluorescence enhancement, analytics and sensing, photothermal therapy, (bio-)diagnostics, and imaging.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials have stimulated continued interest due to their potential applications in fields from electronic, optical to catalysis and energy. Compared with the widely studied 2D metal chalcogenides, 2D oxides could be of particular interest for a ranges of applications where oxidative and high temperature conditions are involved. This feature of 2D oxides, combined with the inherent benefits of 2D systems could also be important for nonlinear optical (NLO) studies that involves strong light-matter interactions. Here we focus on the recent advances in the exploration of 2D metal oxides for nonlinear optics and ultrafast photonic applications. Along with a brief description of the crystal structures, fabrication methods and general properties of 2D oxides, we concentrate our discussion on the recent progresses in the nonlinear optical studies on 2D systems of both metallic and nonmetallic nature. The strong NLO absorption of these 2D oxides has been utilized for the development of optical switches for driving pulse generation in a number of fiber and solid-state lasers operating in the near infrared range. This review finally presents a brief analysis of main challenges of 2D metal oxides in the field nonlinear photonics and a short discussion on potential future directions.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) materials with atomic thickness, tunable light-matter interaction, and significant nonlinear susceptibility are emerging as potential candidates for new-generation optoelectronic devices. In this review, we briefly cover the recent research development of typical nonlinear optic (NLO) processes including second harmonic generation (SHG), third harmonic generation (THG), as well as two-photon photoluminescence (2PPL) of 2D materials. Nonlinear light-matter interaction in atomically thin 2D materials is important for both fundamental research and future optoelectronic devices. The NLO performance of 2D materials can be greatly modulated with methods such as carrier injection tuning, strain tuning, artificially stacking, as well as plasmonic resonant enhancement. This review will discuss various nonlinear optical processes and corresponding tuning methods and propose its potential NLO application of 2D materials.

Abstract:Noble metal nanostructures possess novel optical properties because of their collective electronic oscillations, known as surface plasmons (SPs). The resonance of SPs strongly depends on the material, surrounding environment, as well as the geometry of the nanostructures. Complex metal nanostructures have attracted research interest because of the degree of freedom in tailoring the plasmonic properties for more advanced applications that are unattainable by simple ones. In this review, we discuss the plasmonic properties of several typical types of complex metal nanostructures, that is, electromagnetically coupled nanoparticles (NPs), NPs/metal films, NPs/nanowires (NWs), NWs/NWs, and metal nanostructures supported or coated by dielectrics. The electromagnetic field enhancement and surface-enhanced Raman scattering applications are mainly discussed in the NPs systems where localized SPs have a key role. Propagating surface plasmon polaritons and relevant applications in plasmonic routers and logic gates using NWs network are also reviewed. The effect of dielectric substrates and surroundings of metal nanostructures to the plasmonic properties is also discussed.

Abstract:The abilities to modulate linear and nonlinear optical response of materials in the nanoscale are of central importance in the design and fabrication of photonic devices for applications like optical modulators. Here, based on a simple transition metal oxide/nitride (TiO2/TiN) system, we show that it is possible to tune the optical properties by controlling the nanoscale architecture. Through controlled oxidation of the plasmonic TiN nanoparticle surfaces, we observe a continuous change of linear and nonlinear optical (NLO) properties with the increase of the thickness of the oxide layer in the TiN/TiO2 heterogeneous architecture. The NLO response is manifested by the strong saturable absorption with a structurally tunable negative NLO absorption coefficient. The variation in the NLO absorption coefficient by up to 7-fold can be connected to the relative change in the volume fraction of the metallic core and the dielectric shell. We demonstrate further that the optimized TiN-TiO2 heterostructures can be used to drive an optical switch for pulse laser generation in the 1.5 mu m wavelength region. Our results delineate a topochemical process for optimization of the NLO properties of common plasmonic materials for photonic applications based on simple materials chemistry.

Abstract:Metallic nanoparticles (MNPs) have attracted great interest among scientists and researchers for years due to their unique optical, physiochemical, biological, and magnetic properties. As a result, MNPs have been widely utilized across a variety of scientific fields, including biomedicine, agriculture, electronics, food, cosmetics, and the environment. In this regard, the current review article offers a comprehensive overview of recent studies on the synthesis of MNPs (metal and metal oxide nanoparticles), outlining the benefits and drawbacks of chemical, physical, and biological methods. However, the biological synthesis of MNPs is of great importance considering the biocompatibility and biological activity of certain MNPs. A variety of characterization techniques, including X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, UV-visible spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, atomic force microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and others, have been discussed in depth to gain deeper insights into the unique structural and spectroscopic properties of MNPs. Furthermore, their unique properties and applications in the fields of medicine, agriculture, and the environment are summarized and deeply discussed. Finally, the main challenges and limitations of MNPs synthesis and applications, as well as their future prospects have also been discussed.

Abstract:Metal (Cu, Co, Ni, Pd, Pt, and Ag) nanowires (MNWs) have been produced using anodic aluminum oxide as template. The grown MNWs are characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and electron diffraction. The optical limiting properties of the MNWs are also studied and results obtained at 532 and 1064nm indicate that MNWs have broadband optical limiting capability and the optical limiting performances of some MNWs are comparable to or better than that of carbon nanotubes. It was found that the nonlinear response of MNWs is dominated by nonlinear scattering.

Abstract:Nonlinear optics investigates the light-matter interactions in media, in which the dielectric polarization of the medium responds nonlinearly to the electric and/or magnetic field of the light. Materials with the potential for a large, fast, and broadband nonlinear response have been explored for decades; if realized, these would revolutionize nonlinear optics, leading to low-power, compact, and ultrafast applications. However, the materials now available are limited, either by relatively low nonlinear susceptibilities for ultrafast nonlinear processes or by slow response times attributable to photorefractive effect and thermal nonlinear phenomena. Moreover, growing demand for integration of multiple optoelectronic functionalities on a chip calls for nonlinear materials that are compatible with standard fabrication approaches, such as complementary metal-oxide semiconductor technology. Metamaterials have been predicted to enable a plethora of novel light-matter interactions, including magnetic nonlinear response, backward phase-matching, and the nonlinear mirror ( 1 – 3 ). Linear optical properties such as dielectric permittivity, magnetic permeability, and refractive index can be designed to be positive, negative, or even zero by properly tailoring various properties of meta-atoms (the unit cells of metamaterials). Engineering nonlinear properties of metamaterials beyond those available in nature may be feasible by judiciously designing their quantum, geometric, and topological properties ( 4 ).

Abstract:Nanocomposites based on transparent polymer matrices containing nanoparticles (NPs) of noble metals are modern-day materials that can be specially designed for photonics, linear and nonlinear optics, laser physics and sensing applications. We present the improved photosensitive nanocomposites doped with Au and Ag NPs allowing fabrication of high effective submicrometer dimensional diffraction structures using holographic method. A general approach for the fabrication of holographic structures using a two-component mixture of the monomers of different reactivity was developed. Two different methods, ex situ and in situ, were studied to introduce Au and Ag NPs in the polymer matrix. The diffusion model of the grating formation upon holographic exposure as well as the process of Ag NP synthesis in a polymer matrix is considered. The influence of the NP size on the polymerization process, material dynamic range and nonlinear properties were investigated. The mechanisms and characteristics of the nanocomposite nonlinear optical response are discussed.

Abstract:Due to their exceptional optical properties, nanomaterials have garnered significant interest and found several domains in the fields of ultrafast photonics, optoelectronics, sensors, and biomedicine. In particular, the nonlinear optical response of metal-based nanomaterials is enhanced by surface plasmon resonance, making these nanomaterials a suitable saturable absorber for generating ultrashort pulses across a broad spectrum of wavelengths. Here, we mainly review the physical and chemical methods employed in the fabrication of metal-based nanomaterials. Subsequently, we explore the integration of these nanoparticles into laser cavities. Then, ultrafast application of metal-based nanomaterials based on Q-switching and mode-locking in a wide range of wavelengths are summarized. Finally, future perspectives regarding the advancement of ultrafast photonics facilitated by metal-based nanomaterials are discussed. The advancement of ultrafast photonics and ongoing research into saturable absorbers enabled by metal-based nanomaterials will pave the way for novel directions in the large-scale manufacturing of new optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:The basic theoretical understanding of light interacting with nanostructured metals that has existed since the early 1900s has become more relevant in the last two decades, largely because of new approaches to structure metals down to the nanometer scale or smaller. Here, a broad overview of the concepts and applications of nanostructuring metals for light-based technologies is given. The theory of the response of metals to an applied oscillating field is given, including a discussion of nonlocal, nonlinear and quantum effects. Using this metal response, the guiding of electromagnetic (light) waves using metals is given, with a particular emphasis on the impact of nanostructured metals for tighter confinement and slower propagation. Similarly, the influence of metal nanostructures on light scattering by isolated metal structures, like nanoparticles and nanoantennas, is described, with basic results presented including plasmonic/circuit resonances, the single channel limit, directivity enhancement, the maximum power transfer theorem, limits on the magnetic response from kinetic inductance and the scaling of gap plasmons to the nanometer scale and smaller. A brief overview of nanofabrication approaches to creating metal nanostructures is given. Finally, existing and emerging light-based applications are presented, including those for sensing, spectroscopy (including local refractive index, Raman, IR absorption), detection (including Schottky detectors), switching (including terahertz photoconductive antennas), modulation, energy harvesting and photocatalysis, light emission (including lasers and tunneling based light emission), optical tweezing, nonlinear optics, subwavelength imaging and lithography and high density data storage.
