Abstract:Flexible zinc ion batteries are a promising energy supply for flexible and wearable electronic devices due to their high theoretical capacity, superior safety, low cost, and eco-friendliness. The rational design of highly efficient flexible zinc ion batteries with high electrochemical performance, long cycling life, and excellent mechanical deformability is still a formidable challenge, limiting their widespread application in flexible electronics. This paper summarizes the recent progress in designing and fabricating flexible zinc ion batteries from three aspects: device configurations, battery constituent components, and practical applications. First, we introduce the energy storage mechanism and summarize modification strategies of constituent components, including current collector, zinc anode, cathode, and solid/gel electrolyte, revealing their positive effects on the performance of flexible zinc ion batteries. Then, we elucidate advanced device configurations for flexible zinc ion batteries such as sandwich-type, planar, and fiber-type structures, followed by discussion on the specific properties of flexible zinc ion batteries that enhance their adaptability in practical applications, such as integration with electronics, self-healing ability, resistance to extreme conditions, and responsiveness to environments. The current challenges and outlooks are also presented.

Abstract:Environmental friendliness and low-cost zinc-air batteries for flexible rechargeable applications have great potential in the field of flexible electronics and smart wearables owing to high energy density and long service life. However, the current technology of flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries to meet the commercialization needs still facing enormous challenges due to the poor adaptability of each flexible component of the zinc-air batteries. This review focused on the latest progress over the past 5 years in designing and fabricating flexible self-standing air electrodes, flexible electrolytes and zinc electrodes of flexible Zn-air batteries, meanwhile the basic working principle of each component of flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries and battery structures optimization are also described. Finally, challenges and prospects for the future development of flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries are discussed. This work is intended to provide insights and general guidance for future exploration of the design and fabrication on high-performance flexible rechargeable zinc-air batteries.

Abstract:Flexible zinc batteries have great potential in wearable electronic devices due to their high safety, low cost, and environmental friendliness. In the past few years, a great deal of work on flexible zinc batteries has been reported, with exciting results. Therefore, many solutions have been proposed in electrode design and electrolyte preparation to ensure the desired flexibility without sacrificing the capacity. This paper reviews the recent progress of flexible zinc batteries. We discuss the differences between various anode materials, cathode materials, and electrolytes, introduce the differences of electrode preparation methods of active materials on flexible substrates and their influence on the performance of the battery. Finally, the challenges and future research trends of flexible zinc batteries in capacity and mechanical properties are pointed out.

Abstract:The rapid popularization of wearable electronics, soft robots and implanted medical devices has stimulated extensive research in flexible batteries, which are bendable, foldable, knittable, wearable, and/or stretchable. Benefiting from these distinct characteristics, flexible batteries can be seamlessly integrated into various wearable/implantable devices, such as smart home systems, flexible displays, and implantable sensors. In contrast to conventional lithium-ion batteries necessitating the incorporation of stringent current collectors and packaging layers that are typically rigid, flexible batteries require the flexibility of each component to accommodate diverse shapes or sizes. Accordingly, significant advancements have been achieved in the development of flexible electrodes, current collectors, electrolytes, and flexible structures to uphold superior electrochemical performance and exceptional flexibility. In this review, typical structures of flexible batteries are firstly introduced and classified into mono-dimensional, two-dimensional, and three-dimensional structures according to their configurations. Subsequently, five distinct types of flexible batteries, including flexible lithium-ion batteries, flexible sodium-ion batteries, flexible zinc-ion batteries, flexible lithium/sodium-air batteries, and flexible zinc/magnesium-air batteries, are discussed in detail according to their configurations, respectively. Meanwhile, related comprehensive analysis is introduced to delve into the fundamental design principles pertaining to electrodes, electrolytes, current collectors, and integrated structures for various flexible batteries. Finally, the developments and challenges of flexible batteries are summarized, offering viable guidelines to promote the practical applications in the future.

Abstract:The development of wearable electronic systems has generated increasing demand for flexible power sources. Alkaline zinc (Zn)-based batteries, as one of the most mature energy storage technologies, have been considered as a promising power source owing to their exceptional safety, low costs, and outstanding electrochemical performance. However, the conventional alkaline Zn-based battery systems face many challenges associated with electrodes and electrolytes, causing low capacity, poor cycle life, and inferior mechanical performance. Recent advances in materials and structure design have enabled the revisitation of the alkaline Zn-based battery technology for applications in flexible electronics. Herein, we summarize the up-to-date works in flexible alkaline Zn-based batteries and analyze the strategies employed to improve battery performance. Firstly, we introduce the three most reported cathode materials (including Ag-based, Ni-based, and Co-based materials) for flexible alkaline Zn-based batteries. Then, challenges and modifications in battery anodes are investigated. Thirdly, the recently advanced gel electrolytes are introduced from their properties, functions as well as advanced fabrications. Finally, recent works and the advantages of sandwich-type, fiber-type and thin film-type flexible batteries are summarized and compared. This review provides insights and guidance for the design of high-performance flexible Zn-based batteries for next-generation electronics.

Herein, the recent advances on the development of flexible zinc-air batteries based on self-supported air electrodes are summarized, focusing on the multiscale and systematic design principles for the design of flexible air electrodes. With the electrocatalytic activity regulation and structural engineering strategies, the rational design of self-supported air electrodes is discussed in integrated devices to underpin the good flexibility for wearable requirement. The perspectives on promising developments of flexible zinc-air batteries and the accumulated knowledge from other flexible devices are also addressed for promoting the advances on flexible zinc-air batteries.

Abstract:This review article delves into the development of electrolytes for flexible zinc-air batteries (FZABs), a critical component driving the advancement of flexible electronics. We started by surveying the current advancements in electrolyte technologies, including solid-state and gel-based types, and their contributions to enhance the flexibility, efficiency, and durability of FZABs. Secondly, we explored the challenges in this domain, focusing on maintaining electrolyte stability under mechanical stress, ensuring compatibility with flexible substrates, optimizing ion conductivity, and under harsh environmental conditions. Furthermore, the key issues regarding interface details between electrolyte and the electrodes are covered as well. We then discussed the future of electrolyte development in FZABs, highlighting potential avenues such as materials development, sustainability, in-situ studies, and battery integration. This review offers an in-depth overview of the advancements, challenges, and potential breakthroughs in creating electrolytes for FZABs over the past five years. It serves as a guide for both researchers and industry professionals in this dynamic area.

Abstract:Flexible lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) can be seamlessly integrated into flexible devices, such as flexible displays, wearable devices, and smart cards, to provide power for steady operation under mechanical deformation. An ideal flexible battery should have high flexibility, high energy density, and high power density simultaneously, which are often in conflict with each other. In this Perspective, we analyze the flexible batteries based on structural designs from both the component level and device level. Recent progress in flexible LIBs, including advances in porous structures for battery components, superslim designs, topological architectures, and battery structures with decoupling concepts, is reviewed. In the end, perspectives on the future of flexible batteries are presented and discussed.

Abstract:Flexible energy storage devices have attracted wide attention as a key technology restricting the vigorous development of wearable electronic products. However, the practical application of flexible batteries faces great challenges, including the lack of good mechanical toughness of battery component materials and excellent adhesion between components, resulting in battery performance degradation or failure when subjected to different types of deformation. It is imperative to develop flexible batteries that can withstand deformation under different conditions and maintain stable battery performance. This paper reviews the latest research progress of flexible lithium batteries, from the research and development of new flexible battery materials, advanced preparation processes, and typical flexible structure design. First, the types of key component materials and corresponding modification technologies for flexible batteries are emphasized, mainly including carbon-based materials with flexibility, lithium anode materials, and solid-state electrolyte materials. In addition, the application of typical flexible structural designs (buckling, spiral, and origami) in flexible batteries is clarified, such as 3D printing and electrospinning, as well as advanced fabrication techniques commonly used in flexible materials and battery components. Finally, the limitations and coping strategies in the practical application of flexible lithium batteries are discussed, which provides new ideas for future research.

Abstract:With the rapid iteration and update of wearable flexible devices, high-energy-density flexible lithium-ion batteries are rapidly thriving. Flexibility, energy density, and safety are all important indicators for flexible lithiumion batteries, which can be determined jointly by material selection and structural design. Here, recent progress on high-energy-density electrode materials and flexible structure designs are discussed. Commercialized electrode materials and the next-generation high-energy-density electrode materials are analyzed in detail. The electrolytes with high safety and excellent flexibility are classified and discussed. The strategies to increase the mass loading of active materials on the electrodes by designing the current collector and electrode structure are discussed with keys of representative works. And the novel configuration structures to enhance the flexibility of batteries are displayed. In the end, it is pointed out that it is necessary to quantify the comprehensive performance of flexible lithium-ion batteries and simultaneously enhance the energy density, flexibility, and safety of batteries for the development of the next-generation high-energy-density flexible lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Flexible metal-gas batteries have become increasingly attractive for use in wearable electronics in the recent years due to their large theoretical energy density and superior adaptability to irregular geometric surfaces, such as the human body. With continuous improvements in design strategies and assembly technologies, the fabrication of various advanced flexible metal-gas batteries has been attempted. In spite of these efforts, the synchronous integration of high flexibility, safety, comfort, and high performance into flexible metal-gas batteries with specifically functionalized configurations still remains a formidable challenge. To resolve these dilemmas, the redesign of cathode catalysts, gel polymer electrolyte, and battery configurations/components has been investigated. In this paper, we review the recent technical advances together with the major dilemmas facing currently available flexible metal-gas batteries, highlighting how flexible cathodes and gel polymer electrolytes with various structures and components can affect the electrochemical performance and functionality of flexible metal-gas batteries. Flexible Zn-air, Li-O-2/air, and Li-CO2 batteries are mainly exemplified to elucidate their promising potential. Finally, based on our considerations, unresolved technical hurdles and future research perspectives involving flexible metal-gas batteries for wearable electronics are proposed.

Abstract:Metal-air batteries in fiber shape, which are theoretically endowed with high energy densities, have emerged as a versatile platform for the advance of next-generation flexible electronics. The past decade has witnessed the booming development of fiber-shaped metal-air batteries including flexible lithium-air (oxygen) batteries, zinc-air batteries, aluminum-air batteries and lithium-CO2 batteries. Here the recent advances of fiber-shaped metal-air batteries are briefly summarized, with particular emphasis on the fabrication of flexible electrodes, the electrolyte exploitation and encapsulating material optimization. The remaining challenges and promising directions are highlighted to provide clues for the practical implementation of fiber-shaped metal-air batteries.

Abstract:The emerging flexible electronic devices have stimulated the development of flexible batteries, in which flexible electrodes are indispensable components. Graphene, known for its excellent electrical conductivity and mechanical stability, can be used as an ideal flexible substrate. Recently, many efforts have been devoted to graphene-based electrodes for flexible batteries. Herein, this review summarizes recent advances in the development of graphene-based electrodes for various flexible batteries, including metal-ion batteries (ions of Li, Na, Zn, Al, etc.), lithium-sulfur batteries, and metal-air batteries (Li- and Zn-air batteries). Besides, major challenges and future developments of flexible batteries are also discussed.

Abstract:Abstract Flexible batteries, which maintain their functions potently under various mechanical deformations, attract increasing interest due to potential applications in emerging portable and wearable electronics. Significant efforts have been devoted to material synthesis and structural designs to realize the mechanical flexibility of various batteries. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have a unique one-dimensional (1D) nanostructure and are convenient to further assemble into diverse macroscopic structures, such as 1D fibers, 2D films and 3D sponges/aerogels. Due to their outstanding mechanical and electrical properties, CNTs and CNT-based hybrid materials are superior building blocks for different components in flexible batteries. This review summarizes recent progress on the application of CNTs in developing flexible batteries, from closed-system to open-system batteries, with a focus on different structural designs of CNT-based material systems and their roles in various batteries. We also provide perspectives on the challenges and future research directions for realizing practical applications of CNT-based flexible batteries.
