Abstract:We here report a molecule with chiral recognition capability by a mechanism of complexation-induced circularly polarised luminescence (CPL) in the solid thin film state. A molecule (1) containing the luminogenic unit silole and chiral phenylethanamine pendants is synthesized and characterized with standard spectroscopic methods. In a solution of 1, no circular dichroism (CD) or fluorescence emission are observed. When aggregated into nanoparticles in a poor solvent, fluorescence is turned on but CD is still silent. When complexed with chiral acids to form a thin film, molecule 1 becomes CD-active and strongly fluorescent, showing simultaneous complexation-induced CD (CICD) and aggregation-induced emission (AIE) effects. The assemblies of 1 with different enantiomers of mandelic acid emit distinctly handed circularly polarised light and display CPL dissymmetry factors with absolute value around 0.01. This work provides a new platform for creating molecular functional materials with solid-state chiral sensing ability through reading CPL output signals.

Abstract:Novel task-specific ionic liquids derived from (S)-phenyl amino acid were prepared as a chiral sensor for the first time. It was found that the ionic liquids exhibited different chiral visual responses to the enantiomers. When (S)-tryptophan was treated with the sensor and Cu(II) in water, the clear solution would change to a sapphire suspension. Differently, another enantiomer could not produce the precipitate. Furthermore, the enantiomers could generate different colors in DMSO under the same conditions. The substantial difference contributes to the easy discrimination with visual determination. Four racemates were successfully tested with this strategy. The precipitation was isolated in the range of 90-94% yields after complete formation of the coordinative bonds, which could be as a simple way for enantioseparation. The responsive mechanism of the sensor was studied by NMR spectroscopy, FTIR and SEM. UV-vis spectrophotometer was used to monitor the colorimetric signal of the racemate with different e.e. values. Abstract:The chiral polymer P-1 incorporating (S)-2,2′-binaphthol (BINOL) and (S)-2,2′-binaphthyldiamine (BINAM) moieties in the main chain of the polymer backbone was synthesized by the polymerization of (S)-6,6′-dibutyl-3,3′-diformyl-2,2′-binaphthol (S-M-1) with (S)-2,2′-binaphthyldiamine (S-M-2) via nucleophilic addition–elimination reaction, and the chiral polymer P-2 could be obtained by the reduction reaction of P-1 with NaBH4. The fluorescence intensity of the chiral polymer P-1 exhibits gradual enhancement upon addition of (d)- or (l)-phenylalaninol and keeps nearly a linear correlation with the concentration molar ratios of (d)- or (l)-phenylalaninol. The value of enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratio (ef) is 6.85 for the chiral polymer on (d)-phenylalaninol. Abstract:A chiral host L1 incorporating (S)-BINOL and substituted coumarin moieties was synthesized via a nucleophilic addition-elimination reaction, and ligand L2 could be obtained by the reduction reaction of the imine-based L1 with NaBH4. The fluorescence responses of chiral compounds L1 and L2 on (L)-/(D)-phenylalaninol were investigated by fluorescence spectra. The fluorescence intensity of L1 in cooperation with (L)-/(D)-phenylalaninol shows a gradual enhancement upon addition of (L)-/(D)phenylalaninol and keeps a nearly linear correlation with the concentration molar ratios from 1 : 10 to 1 : 180. Stoichiometries and association constants of L1 with (L)-/(D)-phenylalaninol were calculated. The results indicate that chiral sensor L1 can exhibit a remarkable "turn-on'' fluorescence enhancement response and excellent enantioselective behaviour for (L)-phenylalaninol by direct visual observation at low concentration, and the value of the enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratio (ef) is 3.07. On the contrary, no obvious fluorescence response and enantioselective recognition effect can be detected for L2 towards either (L)-/(D)-phenylalaninol.
Preparation of amino acid chiral ionic liquid and visual chiral recognition of glutamine and phenylalanine enantiomers

Abstract:In this paper, the amino acid chiral ionic liquid (AACIL) was prepared with L-phenylalanine and imidazole. It was characterized by CD, FT-IR, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectrum. The chiral recognition sensor was constructed with AACIL and Cu(II), which exhibited different chiral visual responses (solubility or color difference) to the enantiomers of glutamine (Gln) and phenylalanine (Phe). The effects of solvent, pH, time, temperature, metal ions, and other amino acids on visual chiral recognition were optimized. The minimum concentrations of Gln and Phe for visual chiral recognition were 0.20 mg/ml and 0.28 mg/ml, respectively. The mechanism of chiral recognition was investigated by FT-IR, TEM, SEM, TG, XPS, and CD. The location of the host-guest inclusion or molecular placement has been conformationally searched based on Gaussian 09 software.

Abstract:A highly porous and fluorescent metal-organic framework (MOF), 1, was built from a chiral tetracarboxylate bridging ligand derived from 1,1'-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) and a cadmium carboxylate infinite-chain secondary building unit. The fluorescence of 1 can be effectively quenched by amino alcohols via H-bonding with the binaphthol moieties decorating the MOF, leading to a remarkable chiral sensor for amino alcohols with greatly enhanced sensitivity and enantioselectivity over BINOL-based homogeneous systems. The higher detection sensitivity of 1 is due to a preconcentration effect by which the analytes are absorbed and concentrated inside the MOF channels, whereas the higher enantioselectivity of 1 is believed to result from enhanced chiral discrimination owing to the cavity confinement effect and the conformational rigidity of the BINOL groups in the framework. 1 was quenched by four chiral amino alcohols with unprecedentedly high Stern-Volmer constants of 490-31200 M-1 and enantioselectivity ratios of 1.17-3.12.

Abstract:A new (S)-binaphthalene-based polymer (P-1) was synthesized by the polymerization of 5,5-((2,5-dibutoxy-1,4-phenylene)bis(ethyne-2,1-diyl))bis(2-hydroxy-3-(piperidin-1-ylmethyl) benzaldehyde (M-1) with (S)-2,2-dimethoxy-(1,1-binaphthalene)-3,3-diamine (M-2) through the formation of a Schiff base; the corresponding chiral polymer (P-2) could be obtained by the reduction of polymer P-1 with NaBH4. Chiral polymer P-1 exhibited a remarkable turn-on fluorescence-enhancement response towards (D)-phenylalaninol and excellent enantioselective recognition behavior with enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratios (ef) as high as 8.99. More importantly, chiral polymer P-1 displays a bright blue fluorescence color change upon the addition of (D)-phenylalaninol under a commercially available UV lamp, which can be clearly observed by the naked eye. On the contrary, chiral polymer P-2 showed weaker enantioselective fluorescence ability towards the enantiomers of phenylalaninol.

Abstract:A novel chiral (S)-BINAM-based fluorescence polymer sensor was designed and synthesized by the polymerization of 5,5'4(2,5-dioctyloxy-1,4-phenylene)bis-(ethyne-2,1-diyl)bis(2-hydroxy-3-(piperidin-1-ylmethyl)-benzaldehyde (M-1) with (S)-2,2'-binaphthyldiamine (S-BINAM, M-2) via Schiff's base formation. The resulting chiral polymer sensor shows very weak fluorescence but exhibits the obvious fluorescence enhancement response toward Zn2+. The in situ generated 1:1 Zn(II)-containing complex of chiral polymer can serve as a fluorescence sensor for highly enantioselective recognition of N-Boc-protected alanine, and the value of enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratio (ef) can reach as high as 6.90. This is the first report on the in situ generated chiral polymer complex used as a fluorescence sensor for highly enantioselective recognition of N-Boc-protected alanine.

Abstract:Chirality is a fundamental phenomenon of nature, and the enantioselective recognition of amino acids isomers is especially important for life science. In this study, chiroptical system based on chiral assembly graphene quantum dots (GQDs) was developed for visual testing of D-phenylalanine (D-Phe). Here, GQDs were used as the fluorescent element, and chiral functional moieties of 1,3,5-triformylphloroglucinol-functionalized chiral ( +)-diacetyl-L-tartaric anhydride (TPTA) were used as the chiral recognition elements. Based on the formed chiral microenvironment, the fluorescence intensity of TPTA-assembled GQDs had a good linear relationship with D-Phe in the concentration range of 0.1–5 μM, and the detection limit was 0.023 μM. According to the variation in luminance of TPTA-assembled GQDs, visual testing to D-Phe was realized using a smartphone-assisted chiroptical system with a detection limit of 0.050 μM. The spiked recoveries of both chiroptical sensing methods based on TPTA-assembled GQDs from the food matrix ranged from 86.20 to 110.0%. Furthermore, TPTA-assembled GQDs were successfully applied to intracellular chiroptical imaging in response to D-Phe in vitro. The developed chiral nanomaterial TPTA-assembled GQDs with excellent photochemical stability, optical properties, and bioimaging capabilities provide a promising technique for the visual detection of amino acid isomers in the field of smart devices.
An ionic-based carbon dot for enantioselective discrimination of nonaromatic amino alcohols

Abstract:Here, ionized chiral carbon dots, (S,S)-C-dots-1 (λex = 430 nm, λem = 480 nm), were synthesized via a facile route with relatively high quantum yield (∼24.4%) and used as a fluorescent chiral sensor. One of the advantages of the synthetic process is that it avoids the loss of the chiral center. That is, the chiral bromo compound can directly form an ionic pair with the pyridyl group, which is derived from the amine precursor in the first step. Furthermore, (S,S)-C-dots-1 shows clear discrimination toward different configurations of nonaromatic amino alcohols in the presence of Cu(ii). When the (R)-isomer is added to a solution of (S,S)-C-dots-1 + Cu(ii), it shows much higher fluorescent intensity than the (S)-isomer. The values of IR/IS are 2.9 and 2.3 for 2-aminobutan-1-ol and 2-aminopropan-1-ol, respectively. In summary, we believe that this work can expand the synthetic routes and potential applications of functional carbon dots in the field of enantioselective sensing.

Abstract:Four chiral fluorescence sensors (S)-L1–4 incorporating boronic ester and (S)-1,1′-bi-2-naphthol (BINOL) moieties were synthesized and developed for the enantioselective recognition of α-phenylethylamine and phenylglycinol enantiomers. The sensor (S)-L1 shows an obvious fluorescence quenching “turn-off” response towards enantiomers of both α-phenylethylamine and phenylglycinol. Interestingly, the sensor (S)-L2 can exhibit remarkable fluorescent enhancement “turn-on” response behavior towards (S)-α-phenylethylamine, but shows no response towards phenylglycinol enantiomers. The Stern–Volmer constant (Ksv) values of (S)-L1 are 0.63 × 103 L mol−1 and 4.48 × 103 L mol−1 for (L)- and (D)-phenylglycinol, respectively, and the value of the enantiomeric fluorescence difference ratio (ef) of (S)-L2 is 4.6 for α-phenylethylamine, demonstrating that (S)-L2 could be used as a fluorescence sensor for simple and direct visual discrimination of organic molecule enantiomers. On the contrary, no fluorescence enantioselective recognition response could be observed when using the (S)-BINOL-based boronic ester sensors (S)-L3 and (S)-L4 incorporating bigger naphthyl or 8-methoxyquinolinyl substituent groups.

Abstract:Chiral recognition of l-amino acids is of significant importance due to the crucial role of l-amino acids in life sciences and pharmaceutics. In this work, a chiral sensor with capability of probing two chiral amino acids by an attractive single-template molecular imprinting strategy is introduced and used in the simultaneous chiral recognition of d/l-alanine (d/l-Ala) and d/l-tyrosine (d/l-Tyr). The assay relies on the hydrolysis of l-alanyl-l-tyrosine dipeptide doped in silica/polypyrrole (SiO2/PPy) under acidic conditions, resulting in l-Ala and l-Tyr coimprinted chiral sensor. This work opens up a new avenue for simultaneous chiral sensing of two or more chiral amino acids by incorporating only one template, circumventing the shortcomings encountered with multitemplate molecularly imprinted technology.
Rapid room-temperature phosphorescence chiral recognition of natural amino acids

Abstract:Chiral recognition of amino acids is very important in both chemical and life sciences. Although chiral recognition with luminescence has many advantages such as being inexpensive, it is usually slow and lacks generality as the recognition module relies on structural complementarity. Here, we show that one single molecular-solid sensor, L-phenylalanine derived benzamide, can manifest the structural difference between the natural, left-handed amino acid and its right-handed counterpart via the difference of room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) irrespective of the specific chemical structure. To realize rapid and reliable sensing, the doped samples are obtained as nanocrystals from evaporation of the tetrahydrofuran solutions, which allows for efficient triplet-triplet energy transfer to the chiral analytes generated in situ from chiral amino acids. The results show that L-analytes induce strong RTP, whereas the unnatural D-analytes produce barely any afterglow. The method expands the scope of luminescence chiral sensing by lessening the requirement for specific molecular structures.
