Abstract:The combined use of two novel low-GWP HFC-based binary working pairs with low-pressure compression-assisted absorption refrigeration systems (LCARS) has the potential to overcome current drawbacks of traditional absorption systems. An experimental prototype with up to about 2 kW cooling capacity that can solely operate as LCARS and single-stage absorption refrigeration system (SSARS) was designed to explore the experimental performances of both working pairs. The R161-based mixture has a higher cooling capacity than the R152a-based, with a maximum cooling capacity of 1.012 kW in SSARS and 2.316 kW in LCARS. LCARS also shows higher cooling capacity while requiring slightly lower heating loads than SSARS, and maximumly increases cooling capacity by about 238.31% for the same R152a, thus presenting a maximum increase in COP of about 184.94%. Compared with R152a, R161 exhibits higher overall COPs of varying from 0.179 to 0.530 in SSARS and from 0.220 to 0.746 in LCARS, with a maximum difference of about 61.48% in SSARS and 75.17% in LCARS; while R152a performs better under the relatively lower-grade heat sources, with a maximum difference of about 125.19 % in SSARS and 34.01% in LCARS. This study lays a foundation for future absorption applications in the low-grade heat sources.
