Abstract:According to the actual needs of underwater acoustic homing system in system debugging and setting up experiment parameters, a new design of real water double targets simulator is introduced. The system simulates the acoustic reflection characteristics of the target, receives active detection signal and emits signals of reflection echo characteristics. The target simulator can response up to two active detection signals in the condition of interference. This system is complete, accurate and can be extended. The user can monitor the working state of simulator and change the parameters of simulator. As a result of an echoic tank experiment and lake experiment, the system has been successfully applied to the underwater homing system.
Experimental verification of directional liquid surface wave emission at band edge frequencies

Abstract:Directional liquid surface wave emission at band edge frequencies is an interesting physical phenomenon and has already been studied in theoretical research. There has been no experimental validation of it to date, however. This paper has as its subject the experimental investigation of the emission effect when a point source is placed inside a finite square array of rigid cylinders standing vertically in liquid. Both the wave patterns and spatial intensities are obtained by experiment and compared with simulated results calculated by using the finite element method. We can see from this comparison that the two results correspond closely both at lower and upper band edge frequency. Obvious directional wave emission along a desired direction is observed in the source structures, confirming previous theoretical predictions. In the future, this method could serve as a directional liquid wave source in applications used in hydraulic and ocean engineering for the concentration of wave energy.
Experimental demonstration of time reversal communication in doubly dispersive underwater channels

Abstract:It is known that the conventional time reversal (or passive-phase conjugation) is not applicable to time-varying channels with large Doppler spreads. Recently a new time reversal communication technique that can simultaneously counteract delay and Doppler spreads has been proposed and tested via simulations [22]. In this paper, we present testing results from a field experiments of underwater acoustic communication, which was conducted with a fast mobile source in the Thousand-Island Lake located at Chunan, China, in December 2011. Experimental results demonstrate that the new time reversal receiver that uses a rake-like structure to compensate for multiple Doppler shifts can eliminate both Doppler spread introduced by temporal channel variations and delay spread caused by waveguide effects. As such, it provides a quite promising data transmission technique for underwater communication network.
Study of Wave-Induced Mass Transport and Internal Mixing Based on a Two-Liquid VOF Model

Abstract:In this study, the wave-induced mass transport and internal mixing under regular waves propagating in a flume are numerically investigated by a VOF-type (Volume of Fluid) method. A two-phase VOF method based on a multi-phase flow mathematical theory is implemented in a constraint interpolation profile (CIP)-based model to track the free surface and water-water interface simultaneously under Eulerian framework. First, the numerical validation is performed on Stokes drift distribution under regular waves propagating in a flat bottom flume. Good grid convergence and mass conservation are verified. The computed results show favorable agreement with theoretical solution and experimental data. The regular waves propagating over a submerged breakwater are further investigated, focusing on the mass transport and internal mixing in the long term evolution of flow field. The mass transport and water exchange in the vicinity of breakwater are presented qualitatively. A significant water mixing and broken interface are observed even if there is no regular waves breaking. Results indicate that the CIP-based model coupled with the two-phase VOF method can provide a different perspective to study wave-induced mass transport and internal mixing in coastal zone.
Doppler effect in the ripple tank: further experiments with a moving source

Abstract:In this paper we extend some recent works about Doppler effect in surface waves on water. We improve the experimental set up exploring several situations: source in motion with constant velocity and receiver at rest, source at rest and receiver in motion with constant velocity, as well as both source and receiver in motion. Thereby we produce fractional frequency changes of the order of 40-50%, far larger than those obtained by more traditional sound experiments. The experimental set-up, the data collection and the data analysis also allow to highlight some aspects relevant from a didactic point of view, in particular the experimental results clearly show the nonlinearity of the Doppler shift with the moving source velocity.

Abstract:A numerical approach was performed to predict the propagation and transformation of nonlinear water waves. A numerical wave flume was developed based on the non-periodic high-order spectral (HOS) method. The flume was applied to analyze the effect of wave steepness and wavelength on the propagation of nonlinear waves. The results show that for waves of low steepness, the wave profile and the wave energy spectrum are stable, and that the propagation can be predicted by the linear wave theory. For waves of moderate steepness and steep waves, the effects associated with the interactions between waves in a wave group become significant and a train of initially sinusoidal waves may drastically change its form within a short distance from its original position.

Abstract:We simplify the Ashworth-Davies special relativistic theory of a uniformly translating mirror with an arbitrary angle of incidence and direction of propagation in the non-relativistic limit. We show that it is in good agreement with a more intuitive derivation that only considers the constancy of the speed of light. We experimentally confirm the theory predictions with phase-insensitive frequency measurements using a liquid crystal light valve.

Abstract:Understanding the waveguide fields produced by moving directional sources is of crucial importance in underwater acoustic detection. In practice, moving underwater targets often exhibit directionality, especially at high frequencies. Herein, we present a semi-analytical method to calculate the Doppler-shifted field (DSF) from a directional source moving horizontally in a range-independent, shallow-water waveguide. We develop a novel normal-mode model using a modal-projection approach with a perfectly matched layer. This comprehensively accounts for changes in modal shape, eigenvalue shifts, and the branch-integral contribution. We derive an analytical expression for the DSF based on Huygens’ principle, and the solution is presented as a sum over propagating eigenmodes, with the modal excitation determined by the source directivity depending upon the grazing angle of each pair of modal plane waves. This expression is valid for any type of radiator moving in a range-independent environment with a smoothly varying sound-speed profile. We then present a theoretical analysis of the Doppler beam shift produced by a piston-like radiator. This reveals that the observed angular offset of modal plane waves can be attributed to the Doppler beam shift and confirms that this is a new mechanism causing considerable differences between the fields generated by a directional moving source and by the same source at rest. This has potential value in various applications, particularly for underwater acoustic detection of moving targets.

Abstract:It is important in practical engineering to study the propagation of water waves in coastal waters using mathematical modeling methods. The research of water waves has progressed very much in the recent decades. Water wave models, such as mild-slope equation, Boussinesq equation and so on, have been put into practical engineering applications. But different water wave models have different effectiveness. The respective theoretical basis of the water wave models determines the features of these models. As mathematical models, based on the conversation law of wave energy or wave action, spectral wave models are used to determine wave conditions in coastal regions, which can account for all relevant processes of generation, dissipation and propagation. But the conventional spectral wave models can not simulate the wave diffraction. With diffraction being incorporated, the spectral wave models can be more widely used to simulate waves in the coastal regions. In this paper, a new phase averaged wave model is developed, in which the conservation of wave energy or wave action is used to formulate the wave propagation and a combined refraction and diffraction contribution is coupled through introducing a diffraction factor based on analysis of the mild slope equation. Computational results in extreme diffraction cases agree reasonably well with observations. It is shown that the new model can be used to simulate refraction and diffraction of water waves in coastal regions.

Abstract:This study is to propose a wave model with both wave dispersivity and nonlinearity for the wave field without water depth restriction. A narrow-banded sea state centred around a certain dominant wave frequency is considered for applications in coastal engineering. A system of fully nonlinear governing equations is first derived by depth integration of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in conservative form. A set of second-order nonlinear time-dependent mild-slope equations is then developed by a perturbation scheme. The present nonlinear equations can be simplified to the linear time-dependent mild-slope equation, nonlinear long wave equation, and traditional Boussinesq wave equation, respectively. A finite volume method with the fourth-order Adams-Moulton predictor-corrector numerical scheme is adopted to directly compute the wave transformation. The validity of the present model is demonstrated by the simulation of the Stokes wave, cnoidal wave, and solitary wave on uniform depth, nonlinear wave shoaling on a sloping beach, and wave propagation over an elliptic shoal. The nearshore wave transformation across the surf zone is simulated for 1D wave on a uniform slope and on a composite bar profile and 2D wave field around a jetty. These computed wave height distributions show very good agreement with the experimental results available.

Abstract:New results on the recently introduced steady-motion-based Dopplerlet transform is presented and an estimation scheme for both range and speed of moving sound source using Dopplerlet transform is considered. First, we derive the real, discrete, and real discrete Dopplerlet transforms from their complex counterpart. Second, we reformulate some of the existing integral transformations within the framework of the Dopplerlet transform. Finally, we provide the application results. Experimental results with real underwater acoustic data and land acoustic data, as well as Monte Carlo simulation results with computer-generated data, have confirmed the veracity and practical usefulness of the estimation scheme advocated.

On the Interaction of Deep Water Waves and Exponential Shear Currents

Abstract:A train of periodic deep-water waves propagating on a steady shear current with a vertical distribution of vorticity is investigated by an analytic method, namely the homotopy analysis method (HAM). The magnitude of the vorticity varies exponentially with the magnitude of the stream function, while remaining constant on a particular streamline. The so-called Dubreil–Jacotin transformation is used to transfer the original exponentially nonlinear boundary-value problem in an unknown domain into an algebraically nonlinear boundary-value problem in a known domain. Convergent series solutions are obtained not only for small amplitude water waves on a weak current but also for large amplitude waves on a strong current. The nonlinear wave-current interaction is studied in detail. It is found that an aiding shear current tends to enlarge the wave phase speed, sharpen the wave crest, but shorten the maximum wave height, while an opposing shear current has the opposite effect. Besides, the amplitude of waves and fluid velocity decay over the depth more quickly on an aiding shear current but more slowly on an opposing shear current than that of waves on still water. Furthermore, it is found that Stokes criteria of wave breaking is still valid for waves on a shear current: a train of propagating waves on a shear current breaks as the fiuid velocity at crest equals the wave phase speed. Especially, it is found that the highest waves on an opposing shear current are even higher and steeper than that of waves on still water. Mathematically, this analytic method is rather general in principle and can be employed to solve many types of nonlinear partial differential equations with variable coefficients in science, finance and engineering.

Abstract:The dual Doppler effect, in the simultaneous occurrence of both normal and inverse Doppler effect in one moving two-dimensional wedge-type photonic crystal, is proposed. An improved finite-different time-domain algorithm is used to verify this phenomenon. The spatial Fourier Transformation has been applied to complex electrical field data to reveal the mechanism. The harmonics with negative spatial frequencies show a lagging phase evolution, while those with positive spatial frequencies show a front phase evolution. Different wedge-type photonic crystals are designed to filter out the required harmonics based on the systematic study of spatial Fourier Transformation and wave vector diagram. Our work paves a new way for Doppler cooling of atomic gases, radar deception, invisibility cloaks, microstructure dual frequency interferometer and so on.

Abstract:This article presents a numerical method for modeling nonlinear water waves based on the High Order Spectral（HOS） method proposed by Dommermuth and Yue and West et al.,involving Taylor expansion of the Dirichlet problem and the Fast Fourier Transform（FFT） algorithm. The validation and efficiency of the numerical scheme is illustrated by a number of case studies on wave and wave train configuration including the evolution of fifth-order Stokes waves,wave dispersive focusing and the instability of Stokes wave with finite slope. The results agree well with those obtained by other studies.
The Effect of Horizontal Shear on Extracting Water Currents From Surface Wave Data

Abstract:The dispersive motion of surface waves is now routinely used to remotely measure the currents close beneath the surface of oceans and other natural flows. The current manifests as wavelength-dependent Doppler shifts in the spatiotemporal wave spectrum, which is obtained by performing a Fourier transform of an observed wave field, a procedure which assumes that the current is horizontally uniform within the field of view. This assumption is frequently not satisfied. We here analyze the effects of the presence of horizontal shear in the velocity field, with special emphasis on biases: ``measured'' velocities which differ systematically in magnitude and/or direction compared to the average current within the field of view. We generate random synthetic wave data according to a spectrum prescribed at the domain center while varying the current and its gradient, and the mean direction $\theta_0$ and angular spread of the waves' propagation direction, from which we extract Doppler shift velocities (DSVs) using one of the most common numerical schemes. Assuming currents vary by up to 10\% of a characteristic wave phase velocity across the field of view, we find that strong biases can occur for highly directional wave spectra, strongly dependent on $\theta_0$ and the current direction relative to that of its magnitude gradient. We discuss how biases arise in the DSV extraction procedure and suggest practical steps to discover the presence of biases.

Abstract:Summary Extracting the dispersion energy image is one of the key steps of surface wave analysis, which is considered an effective and important way to obtain the vertical velocity structure. The quality of the dispersion energy image directly affects the accuracy of selected dispersion curves and the subsequent inversion. However, if we can theoretically obtain an accurate two-dimensional dispersion energy diagram, we will skip the step of extracting the dispersion curves. Here, we present the double-source frequency wavenumber transform to extract theoretical 2D dispersion energy images from multichannel data. Unlike 1D dispersion energy images, which are based on the assumption of a horizontally layered medium structure, 2D dispersion energy images also reflect information about the irregular interfaces of media. We adopt a geometry in which two reciprocal sources are on both ends of a receiver array. Then, the multichannel data obtained by this geometry are transformed into the frequency domain, and a 2D dispersion energy image that corresponds to the 2D structure is obtained by the double-source frequency wavenumber transform. By producing a variety of synthetic data and processing active source data from the Salton Seismic Imaging Project, we confirm the accuracy and applicability of the double-source frequency wavenumber transform. As demonstrated by the results, the double-source frequency wavenumber transform can obtain the theoretical 2D dispersion energy distribution and shows significant potential in the field of seismic tomography.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. This paper's goal is to investigate the oscillatory flow of double-diffusive convection in a Voigt fluid. We re-design the basic equations of the channel flow, which initially appear dimensional, in a dimensionless manner using non-dimensional variables. The oscillation technique transforms the governing equations into coupled ordinary differential equations (CODEs). We have derived the analytical expressions for velocity, temperature, and concentration distribution by solving the CODEs using the direct analytical method. The study focuses on how physical factors, like the thermal Grashof number, the solutal Grashof number, the Prandtl number, the Lewis number, and the Voigt fluid parameter, affect different aspects of flow, such as speed, temperature, concentration, rate of heat transfer, and mass transfer. Notably, the study finds that skin friction increases on both channel plates with increasing injection on the heated plate. The significance of double-diffusive oscillatory flow lies in its ability to improve heat and mass transfer rates, as well as its impact on pattern formation and stability, which influences a wide range of applications from engineering design to environmental studies.

Self-induced transparency of long water waves over bathymetry: the dispersive shock mechanism

Abstract:Dispersive shock waves (DSW) are a salient feature of long water waves often observed in tidal bores and tsunami/meteotsunami contexts. Their interaction with bathymetry is poorly understood. The shoreline hazard from tsunamis and meteotsunamis critically depends on the fraction of incoming energy flux transmitted across the shallow nearshore shelf. Here, by considering nonlinear dynamics of waves over variable depth within the framework of the Boussinesq equations we show that the transmitted energy flux fraction can strongly depend on the initial amplitude of the incoming wave and the distance it travels. The phenomenon is similar to self-induced transparency in nonlinear optics: small amplitude waves are reflected by bathymetry inhomogeneity, while a larger amplitude ones pass through. The mechanism of self-induced transparency of long water waves can be explained as follows. In linear setting a bathymetry inhomogeneity, of length comparable to that of the incident wavelength, by transmitting high wavenumber components acts as a high-pass filter. The DSW evolution efficiently transfers wave energy into high wavenumber band, where reflection is negligible. By examining an idealized model of bathymetry we show that this is an order one effect and explore its dependence on parameters in the range relevant for meteotsunamis. The role of wave energy transfer into high wavenumber band owing to the growth of bound harmonics unrelated to the DSW was found to be small.
