Abstract:The aim of this paper is to analyse security aspects on home ownership in a European perspective. The conventional view is that homeowners' security is achieved through equity formation in their homes. This opens up possibilities to withdraw equity in order to supplement a faulting social support system, to retire early or, in general, to increase consumption. This can be achieved through re-mortgaging or by moving and scaling down. These opportunities are predominant in all parts of Europe, and have been proliferated through the recent price boom. Research demonstrates that equity release in any form seldom happens. Instead, security through home ownership seems to be mitigated through low housing expenditures in older age, as a result of debt repayments at an earlier age. This life cycle pattern of housing expenditures may change in the future with more debts and a lower inflation rate. The housing security aspect creates differences across tenure forms and has wider distributional effects, due to differences in household composition in different countries and due to the size of the owner-occupied sector.

Abstract:In the context of China's evolving urban landscape, this study examines the relationship between homeownership and the propensity for households to engage in risky financial investments, while considering the moderating role of social security and the mediating influence of subjective well-being. Leveraging data from the 2019 China Household Finance Survey (CHFS) and employing quantitative analysis, the findings reveal that homeownership positively correlates with riskier investment behaviors, a relationship nuanced by social security provisions and mediated by the homeowners' sense of well-being. These insights challenge traditional financial behavior theories by highlighting the complex interplay of socio-economic factors and personal well-being in investment decisions, suggesting significant implications for policymakers and financial advisors. The study emphasizes the importance of integrating psychological and economic security in understanding financial behaviors, opening avenues for further research into the impact of technological advancements and cross-cultural applicability.

Abstract:Australia's longstanding culture of homeownership, symbolising stability and achievement, also impacts positive ageing outcomes across multiple domains. Recently, demographic and economic factors, such as housing affordability issues, insufficient income and barriers to the housing market, pose challenges to homeownership, with implications for retirement planning as the use of home equity to support ageing evolves. Secure housing and financial security are critical for successful ageing, necessitating flexible solutions and innovative financing models like fractional ownership. We raise awareness of the changing dynamics of retirement planning and accentuate the increasing significance of innovative housing solutions in supporting health during retirement.

Abstract:In many countries, rental housing is associated with insecure occupant rights and limited control for residents and homeownership is linked with ontological security. In the literature on homemaking, ontological security comprises a set of attributes, i.e., secure occupancy, autonomy and control, but these are often bundled, or treated jointly. In this paper we draw on the lived experiences of residents in Rental Housing Cooperatives (RHC) in Honduras and Australia, and ask how the experience of ontological security in RHC is shaped by its distinct characteristics? We argue that, if the experience of ontological security can be 'unbundled', wellbeing in rental housing, particularly for population groups increasingly locked out of homeownerships, can be advanced through housing policy innovation that enhances these, or specific, attributes of ontological security. Methodologically the paper draws on relational thinking, interview data ( n = 15) and qualitative analysis of homemaking practices within RHC in Honduras and Australia. The paper utilises a four-quadrant qualitative assessment framework for evaluating occupants' sense of security and autonomy/control, relative to their sense of home and simply being housed. Our results suggest that secure occupancy more fundamentally underpins a sense of home, than autonomy/control. Implications for rental policy and research are considered.

Abstract:This paper analyzes the substitution and trade-off effects of homeownership and housing price on social security expenditure. We construct a theoretical model to investigate the optimal choice for individual and government in social security system with estate transaction. The model predicts that the government is more likely to decrease (increase) social security spending under a higher home rate when house price rises (falls). We test 35 metropolises panel data which spans the year of 1998–2012 under a two-way fixed effects framework. Our empirical analysis supports the theoretical prediction. The estimation results show that at the current home rate 82%, 1% increase in housing price will lead to 1.15 Yuan reduction in social security spending per capita.

Abstract:Homeownership has been shown to be related to various aspects of well-being, although both the causal nature of this relationship and the possible channels behind it have been difficult to identify. We examine an important mechanism which could be responsible for the positive effects of homeownership, namely its role in providing material security in old age. Using data from 15 European countries, we analyse the relationship between homeownership and material security, as measured through subjective evaluation of the likelihood of being better or worse off in the future. We find that homeowners have a higher level of material security than renters, and this association is especially strong for those living in big cities. For this subsample, in comparison to renters, owning a property in the top quartile of the home value distribution is associated with an increase in the probability of expecting to be better off in the future by as much as 43%. We interpret the results as support for the argument that homeownership offers a very particular form of material security, which, through reduction of perceived material risks, may be behind its positive implications for well-being.

Abstract:This paper uses the method of literature review summarizes the changes of China’s housing security system of research,found that the study on in Chinese housing security system’s changes mainly focuses on three aspects:the study of the history of housing security system,the study of the origin and development of housing security system,empirical study of the housing security system changes.Previous studies mostly focus on housing security system’s history and the experience summarization.The main research methods are the collection and textual research method and rational system of material analysis paradigm.In addition,in the transition of housing security system,government is an important enabler,but in the process of pushing,problems that government functions on positioning housing security is not clear and the central and local governments’ different demand cause the housing security policies such as the imperfect legal system and the imperfect distribution system.Above conclusions mean that at present Chinese is needed especially to straighten out the relationship between the central government and local government during the housing security system reform and further defining government functions positioning housing security.Further research is needed to use appropriate methods from different angles to analyze the dynamic factor and the reform experience of housing security system’s changes.

Abstract:This paper aims to establish a new integrated analytic framework, within which to analyze the relationship between housing price and household consumption, financial market, and household characteristics (homeownership and credit conditions) to explore how to use these links to help industry optimization and urban development in the long run. The authors first present a behavioral economic model to show the asymmetric responses of consumption to housing price and the heterogeneous role of financial marketization across different household groups. Then, based on China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) 2010, 2012, and 2014, the authors find urban housing price influences some nonessential expenditure items like education, medical, and transportation, but such influence is subject to financial marketization. Further, the positive moderating effect of financial marketization on consumption is significant on homeowners, particularly for those being constrained. However, this moderating effect is not significant among renters. These heterogeneous responses offer meaningful implications for policy makers in formulating relevant long-term economic strategies that not only spearhead industry optimization and financial policy reform but also transform housing wealth into consumption, along with bolstering economic development in China. Abstract:English-language literature on the relationship between home and dwelling has largely focused on the benefits of homeownership and (to a lesser extent) social rental in facilitating ontological security. Less consideration has been given to the experiences of private tenants. This paper draws on findings of a study on security of occupancy to discuss the ability of private renters to exercise control over their dwellings in Australia. The paper discusses the limitations of Australian legislation, within its policy, market and cultural context, in enabling private tenants to exercise control over their dwellings, and compares the Australian situation with Germany to demonstrate that alternative approaches that afford more control to private tenants are possible in rental systems dominated by private rental. The paper concludes with a call for a wider debate about the importance of home and the impact of social norms regarding the purpose of different types of tenure on housing policy and thus on the rights and well-being of tenants.

Abstract:International Regional Science Review, Ahead of Print. This paper presents a three-country analysis of the relationship between housing, indicators of social capital, and life satisfaction (a proxy for wellbeing) using cross-sectional data from national surveys in Australia, the UK and the US. Addressing a key policy debate we construct, for each jurisdiction, models of life satisfaction as a function of housing and social capital, with a view to better targeting policy interventions to achieve wellbeing outcomes. First, we show that the wellbeing premium associated with homeownership remains resilient despite housing market instability early in the 21st century. Second, we find that while social capital is an important independent positive influence on life satisfaction, its effect is weaker than that of housing tenure. Third, we include two measures of housing risk (repayment risk and investment risk). These position mortgagors on a continuum across the edges of owner-occupation, placing them closer to, or further from, the 'ideal' of outright ownership. The impact of these measures varies across the three countries, raising questions about the way life satisfaction at the edges of ownership may be shaped by institutional forces.

Abstract:We examine the link between homeownership, collective efficacy, and subjective neighborhood crime and disorder. Although prior research suggests that homeownership provides social benefits, the housing downturn and foreclosure crisis, coupled with mounting evidence that people self-select into housing, raise questions about the role of homeownership. We adjust for respondents' decision to own or rent using a nationwide sample of lower-income households. We account for demographic and neighborhood characteristics as well as ratings of individual efficacy. We present a structural equation model that identifies how sense of community and informal social control jointly contribute to collective efficacy. The latent collective efficacy construct mediates the impact of homeownership on resident's perceptions of neighborhood disorder. Such perceptions matter because they have been linked to resident's physical and mental health. Our findings demonstrate that when coupled with sustainable mortgages, homeownership exerts a robust yet indirect effect in reducing subjective neighborhood crime and disorder. Our model also links collective efficacy to neighborhood racial homogeneity, a finding which presents challenges for the study of diversity and community. We discuss sense of community research as well as sustainable mortgages and implications of the foreclosure crisis for the future of homeownership opportunities among lower income households and neighborhoods.

Abstract:The recent housing crisis's devastating effects on U.S. households’ economic situations provides reason to examine the risks, pitfalls and assumptions underlying contemporary housing policy. This paper examines issues associated with renting and owning housing in America. It argues that housing operates as (1) a dimension of the U.S. system of stratification, (2) a method for the unfair distribution of resources in metropolitan space, and (3) a mechanism for the construction of the “other” and as a vehicle for social exclusion. Homeownership restricts people to homogeneous neighborhoods, renders low-income families and renters of all types unacceptable, makes neighborhoods fertile ground for learning who is socially undesirable, breeds class-based distinctions, and puts people in financially risky situations. Rethinking questions about renting and owning may allow consideration of how housing can play a more constructive role in pursing economic opportunities, redistribution and social and economic justice in America.

Abstract:Ever since housing was transformed from the most important welfare benefit to the most valuable form of private property through radical housing reform in 1998, housing allocation mechanisms in China have been characterized by the coexistence of market logic and socialist legacy. Thus, the Chinese housing system exhibits a transitional nature as the country moves away from a socialist housing system towards a privatized housing system. Using the 2011 Chinese Household Finance Survey, we not only examine these changes in private ownership of housing, but also give an updated evaluation of the privatization process with new empirical evidence. We develop a conceptual framework and an empirical analysis to shed light on distinct housing inequality patterns in transitional urban China. Our results show that both socioeconomic characteristics and socialist institutions contribute to housing inequality, but they follow different paths in the reform and have different impacts on housing inequality.

Abstract:While the emergent literature has clearly documented the unfolding of housing financialisation in urban China, a counter-trend occurring simultaneously has received little attention. Focusing on the revival of affordable housing and Shanghai’s shared-ownership housing (SOH) scheme, this study examines how housing financialisation is simultaneously facilitated and managed by the state. Rather than extending housing finance to low-income groups as in many Western societies, the statecraft in China is characterised by segmented housing (de-)financialisation. On the one hand, the strategy has included as many families as possible for housing financialisation; on the other hand, it has excluded low- to middle-income families to reduce financial risk and maintain social stability. SOH merges the two rationales into one by using financial capacity as an implicit eligibility criterion. While lower-middle-class families have been drawn into shared homeownership, they have been frustrated by constraints on assetisation and have become losing subjects of financialisation.

Abstract:Tenure choice is the vital households' decisions of great importance not only for the households but also for the country in which they resides. There is extensive literature on tenure choice and access to home-ownership coming from scholars of different areas. According to their study, we summarize the factors influencing the households' transition to home-ownership. The householder's age, gender, marital status, educational background, wealth, income, parental socio-economic characteristics, as well as the household's life cycle stage and life course events all can influence the process at the micro-level. The economic environment and local housing market circumstance such as inflation rate, housing price, average rental cost, new construction, etc. as well as relevant policies and systems like loan policies and tax system can influence the transition at macro-level. © 2013 American Society of Civil Engineers.

Abstract:With the proposal of new urbanization strategy in China, people-centered urbanization turns to be the core, and the housing problem of the urban population becomes extremely important. In order to satisfy the primary needs of families with financial difficulties among the urban population, Chinese government made a great effort to establish a housing security system. However, actual execution process deviates from the original intention of the system. Local government as a dual agent of the economic development and housing security, it is not only to pursue efficiency mechanism, but also to meet the legitimacy mechanism. Under the incentive of efficiency mechanism and restraint of legitimacy mechanism, local government carries out the “goal displacement” in the implementation process of the housing security system. Therefore, this paper studied on the mechanism of housing security system, and further provided policy suggestions to the development of affordable housing in China’s urbanization process.

Abstract:<span>Home is often dually conceptualized as a physical space of living and a psycho-social place of belonging. To engage with this dual nature of home, housing scholars refer to the concept of ontological security to understand how different forms of housing affect subjective well-being. This paper extends the scope of this research. Developing a framework inspired by the psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, we aim to understand what kind of psycho-spatial arrangements of home-making are involved in establishing ontological security. Based on empirical research in Vancouver, BC, Canada, we suggest three modalities involved in home-making: the need for shelter as the most basic psychic relation to survival, the demand for housing as a psycho-social arrangement with the Other, and the desire for home as a psycho-spatial constitution in the fantasy. Through this, the paper calls for a deeper understanding of how the subject is inscribed actively and dynamically into their social and built environment. </span>

Abstract:Finally, after a lengthy hiatus, the empirical facts of economic inequality need no introduction. In a blaze of publicity during a decade or more, the re-polarization of income and wealth across nearly half a century has been widely documented and is substantially uncontested. There is debate on whether incomes have peaked, no doubt that capital is back, and a great deal of speculation on what might happen next. What is surprising is the limited attention afforded to the pivotal role of housing. To address that gap, conceptually and empirically, this paper draws from panel surveys in three countries across two decades to locate residential property generally, and owner-occupation in particular, within a wider literature on the shape of economic inequality in the long run.
