Abstract:From December 1977 through December 1983, 352 heart valve replacements were performed in 351 patients. The operative mortality rate was 11.4% for single valve replacement, and 15.0% for multi-valvular operations. The cumulative follow-up periods were 872.7 patient-year and 314.3 patient-year for mitral group and aortic group respectively. The valve failure rate was 1.15%/patient-year (10/ 872.7) for mitral valve replacement and 0.64%/patient-year (2/314.3) for aortic valve replacement. The valve failure rates were 3.3%(8/240), 2.1%(3/145), and 3.1%(1/32) for bovine, porcine and homologous dura mater valves respectively. The advantages and disadvantages of the use of bioprosthetic heart valves were discussed. With the use of flexible stents and purified glutaraldehyde, the durability of bioprosthetio valves may be greatly improved.
