Abstract:Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and localized SPR (LSPR) effects have been shown as the principles of some highlysensitive sensors in recent decades. Due to the advances in nano-fabrication technology, the plasmon nano-array sensors based on SPR and LSPR phenomena have been widely used in chemical and bioloical analysis. Sensing with surface-enhanced field and sensing for refractive index changes are able to identify the analytes quantitatively and qualitatively. With the newly developed ultrasensitive plasmonic biosensors, platforms with excellent performance have been built for various biomedical applications, including point-of-care diagnosis and personalized medicine. In addition, flexible integration of plasmonics nano-arrays and combining them with electrochemical sensing have significantly enlarged the application scenarios of the plasmonic nano-array sensors, as well as improved the sensing accuracy.

Abstract:Localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) associated with metal nanostructures has developed into a highly useful sensor technique. Optical LSPR spectroscopy of nanostructures often shows sharp absorption and scattering peaks, which can be used to probe several bio-molecular interactions. Here, we report nanoplasmonic biosensors using LSPR on nanocup arrays (nanoCA) to recognize bio-molecular binding for biochemical detection. These sensors can be modified to quantify binding of small molecules to proteins for odorant and explosive detections. Electrochemical LSPR biosensors can also be designed by coupling electrochemistry and LSPR spectroscopy measurements. Multiple sensing information can be obtained and electrochemical LSPR property can be investigated for biosensors. In some applications, the electrochemical LSPR biosensor can be used to quantify immunoreactions and enzymatic activity. The biosensors exhibit better performance than those of conventional optical LSPR measurements. With multi-transducers, the nanoplasmonic biosensor can provide a promising approach for bio-detection in environmental monitoring, healthcare diagnostics, and food quality control.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures hold great promise in the areas of materials science, chemical and biological sensing. They have been intensively investigated owing to their desirable structure-defined electronic and optical properties and considerable catalytic capacities. Localized surface plasmon resonance is associated with the collective oscillation of dielectrically confined conduction electrons in plasmonic nanostructures and is often excited by coupling with electromagnetic radiation, resulting in spatial confinement and localized field enhancement, which have been widely studied for use in plasmon-enhanced spectroscopy, even to a single-nanoparticle level. Notably, plasmonic nanoparticles can serve as nanoelectrodes with great potential in ultra-sensitive electrochemical detection. Thus, in this chapter, we discuss recent advances in the field of single-nanoparticle plasmonic spectroelectrochemistry. We focus on the fundamental theory as well as applications. Finally, the challenges that must be overcome in emerging key areas such as single-nanoparticle sensing and catalysis are highlighted.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructure biosensors based on metal are a powerful tool in the biosensing field. Surface plasmon resonance (SPR) can be classified into localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) and propagating surface plasmon polariton (PSPP), based on the transmission mode. Initially, the physical principles of LSPR and PSPP are elaborated. In what follows, the recent development of the biosensors related to SPR principle is summarized. For clarity, they are categorized into three groups according to the sensing principle: (i) inherent resonance-based biosensors, which are sensitive to the refractive index changes of the surroundings; (ii) plasmon nanoruler biosensors in which the distances of the nanostructure can be changed by biomolecules at the nanoscale; and (iii) surface-enhanced Raman scattering biosensors in which the nanostructure serves as an amplifier for Raman scattering signals. Moreover, the advanced application of single-molecule detection is discussed in terms of metal nanoparticle and nanopore structures. The review concludes by providing perspectives on the future development of plasmonic nanostructure biosensors.

Abstract:Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have extensive application prospects in high-sensitivity biosensing because of their extraordinary optical properties. However, the large size and cost of prism-based plasmonic sensors limit their commercial applications. Fortunately, the emergence of metallic nanostructured sensors has provided an effective approach to realize low-cost and highly integrated plasmonic sensors. In this review, we first assess the current status and advantages of plasmonic nanostructured sensors, then focus on our group's recent research on their miniaturization, integration, and fabrication cost reduction. Our work is of significance for the development of both plasmonic sensing theory and nanostructured sensing technology.

Abstract:AbstractNoble metal nanoparticles with plasmon resonance features have been widely applied in electrocatalysis and photo‐electrochemistry owing to their unique physical, optical, and catalytic properties. As heterogeneity of nanostructures has considerable influence on their catalytic activities, investigation of electrochemical process on a single nano‐catalyst is necessary to eliminate bulk effect and averaged results. Dark‐field microscopy (DFM) enables the measurements of plasmon resonance scattering spectroscopy of a single nanoparticle. Integrating with electrochemistry, DFM provides a powerful tool to real‐time monitor electrochemical reactions at the nanoscale surface to get new insight into the reaction mechanism. Herein, this mini‐review presented impressive applications of DFM in single‐nanoparticle electrochemistry and discussed recent progress on its performance with enhanced sensitivity and resolution.

Abstract:Recent progress in plasmon-based sensors has greatly overcome the limitations of conventional optical sensors, in terms of sensitivity, tunability, photostability, and in vivo applicability, by employing nanostructured materials. In this review, we summarize three types of plasmon-based nanosensors categorized by the geometries of sensing platforms as plasmonic transducers, which are planar nanofilm, periodic nanoarrays, and individual nanoparticles, respectively. We then introduce the notable accomplishments to enhance the sensing performances for each sensing platform. Additionally, we present recent works for signal enhancement strategy based on the targeted nanoassemblies of particles, which can be applied to all plasmon-based sensing platforms. The focus of this review will be on how plasmonic nanostructures can be applied to detect biological and chemical analytes, and notable approaches to improve the sensitivity.

Abstract:Colorimetric detection of target analytes with high specificity and sensitivity is of fundamental importance to clinical and personalized point-of-care diagnostics. Because of their extraordinary optical properties, plasmonic nanomaterials have been introduced into colorimetric sensing systems, which provide significantly improved sensitivity in various biosensing applications. Here we review the recent progress on these plasmonic nanoparticles-based colorimetric nanosensors for ultrasensitive molecular diagnostics. According to their different colorimetric signal generation mechanisms, these plasmonic nanosensors are classified into two categories: (1) interparticle distance-dependent colorimetric assay based on target-induced forming cross-linking assembly/aggregate of plasmonic nanoparticles; and (2) size/morphology-dependent colorimetric assay by target-controlled growth/etching of the plasmonic nanoparticles. The sensing fundamentals and cutting-edge applications will be provided for each of them, particularly focusing on signal generation and/or amplification mechanisms that realize ultrasensitive molecular detection. Finally, we also discuss the challenge and give our future perspective in this emerging field.

Abstract:Metallic nanoparticles are used in every stage of science and are still charming the researchers to explore the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) properties for the promising application of sensors and catalysts. In this review, recent progresses on silver-based and gold-based single nanoparticle for resonance light scattering imaging analysis and applications are presented. Firstly, fundamental principles and technique of dark-field microscope (DFM) coupled the LSPR spectroscopy are described. Then, the species of silver-based and gold-based single nanoparticle are outlined, with an emphasis on the resonance light scattering imaging analysis of silver-based and gold-based single nanoparticle. Finally, recent achievements of the plasmonic single-particle imaging analysis technique in analytical determinations and reaction monitoring are also comprehensively introduced. We hope to shed some light on the forthcoming study by showing these advances and some future challenges of resonance light scattering imaging analysis.

Abstract:The localized surface plasmon resonance of metal nanoparticles is the collective oscillation of electrons on particle surface. The localized electromagnetic interaction brings a series of novel functions and applications. Plasmonic nanomaterials have been the significant part of nanophotonics, since its' localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) can focus incident phonons on the nanoscale surface. The unique plasmonic property is highly sensitive to their size, shape, coupling between particles as well as local dielectric environment. These properties can be utilized for the development of new biosensing and bioimaging applications. To date, many LSPR sensing strategies have been developed with outstanding measurement capabilities, enabling detection down to the single-molecule level, including LSPR-based sensing, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, metal-enhanced fluorescence, dark-field light-scattering, metal-mediated fluorescence resonance energy transfer. Moreover, the unique optical stability of plasmonic nanoparticles enables them as ideal probes in cellular imaging. Here, recent examples on application of plasmonic nanostructures in sensing and bioimaging are summarized, and perspectives are provided as well.

Abstract:In this Article, we report on plasmonic nanostructured surfaces with almost all colors by nanosphere lithography. The feature sizes,of the plasmonic nanostructures can be controlled by O-2 reactive ion etching and gold evaporation conditions. The optical properties of the plasmonic nanostructured surfaces can be easily tuned in the visible light region by changing etching time, and the color of plasmonic nanostructured surfaces does not change with the viewing angle up to 45 degrees. More importantly, such surfaces show high bulk sensitivity to the refractive index variation, and they can be used as label-free, real-time biosensors to detect biomacro-molecules.
Plasmonic-Nanopore Biosensors for Superior Single-Molecule Detection

Abstract:Plasmonic and nanopore sensors have separately received much attention for achieving single-molecule precision. A plasmonic "hotspot" confines and enhances optical excitation at the nanometer length scale sufficient to optically detect surface-analyte interactions. A nanopore biosensor actively funnels and threads analytes through a molecular-scale aperture, wherein they are interrogated by electrical or optical means. Recently, solid-state plasmonic and nanopore structures have been integrated within monolithic devices that address fundamental challenges in each of the individual sensing methods and offer complimentary improvements in overall single-molecule sensitivity, detection rates, dwell time and scalability. Here, the physical phenomena and sensing principles of plasmonic and nanopore sensing are summarized to highlight the novel complementarity in dovetailing these techniques for vastly improved single-molecule sensing. A literature review of recent plasmonic nanopore devices is then presented to delineate methods for solid-state fabrication of a range of hybrid device formats, evaluate the progress and challenges in the detection of unlabeled and labeled analyte, and assess the impact and utility of localized plasmonic heating. Finally, future directions and applications inspired by the present state of the art are discussed.

Abstract:In the last decade, plasmonic nanoparticles-based scattering imaging and spectroscopy has introduced the analysis and sensing to the single nanoparticle and molecule level, such as the biomolecules adsorption process and the quantitative detection of small molecules and ions. Recently, this technology has also been focus on the real-time and in-situ reaction monitoring, which is a new emerging branch of the single-nanoparticle imaging, revealing the reaction dynamic information and the related controlling factors. In this mini-review, recent applications of plasmon resonance scattering imaging and spectroscopy in the real-time reaction monitoring in the past 5 years are highlighted and discussed.

Abstract:Surface plasmonic sensors have been widely used in biology, chemistry, and environment monitoring. These sensors exhibit extraordinary sensitivity based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR) or localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) effects, and they have found commercial applications. In this review, we present recent progress in the field of surface plasmonic sensors, mainly in the configurations of planar metastructures and optical-fiber waveguides. In the metastructure platform, the optical sensors based on LSPR, hyperbolic dispersion, Fano resonance, and two-dimensional (2D) materials integration are introduced. The optical-fiber sensors integrated with LSPR/SPR structures and 2D materials are summarized. We also introduce the recent advances in quantum plasmonic sensing beyond the classical shot noise limit. The challenges and opportunities in this field are discussed.

Abstract:The subwavelength confinement feature of localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) allows plasmonic nanostructures to be functionalized as powerful platforms for detecting various molecular analytes as well as weak processes with nanoscale spatial resolution. One of the main goals of this field of research is to lower the absolute limit-of-detection (LOD) of LSPR-based sensors. This involves the improvement of (i) the figure-of-merit associated with structural parameters such as the size, shape and interparticle arrangement and, (ii) the spectral resolution. The latter involves advanced target identification and noise reduction techniques. By highlighting the strategies for improving the LOD, this review introduces the fundamental principles and recent progress of LSPR sensing based on different schemes including 1) refractometric sensing realized by observing target-induced refractive index changes, 2) plasmon rulers based on target-induced relative displacement of coupled plasmonic structures, 3) other relevant LSPR-based sensing schemes including chiral plasmonics, nanoparticle growth, and optomechanics. The ultimate LOD and the future trends of these LSPR-based sensing are also discussed.

Abstract:Plasmonic nanostructures have immense potentials for extreme concentration of light into deep‐subwavelength spaces with giant local field intensity, which can be exploited for novel applications including nanoscale optical trapping, biosensing, and enhanced spectroscopy. Herein, a succinct overview of the potentials of engineered plasmonic nanoarchitectures of various geometries including nanoparticles, nanodimers, nanoapertures, nanoporous surfaces, and picometer‐scale gap systems for single‐molecule analysis is provided. In particular, the potentials of single plasmonic nanoparticles for single‐molecule sensing, coupled plasmonic nanodimers for few‐molecule strong coupling, metallic nanocavities for optical manipulation of single molecules, nanoporous metasurfaces for enhanced single‐molecule spectroscopy, and plasmonic picocavities for single‐molecule optomechanics are extensively discussed. Finally, as an outlook, exploiting such novel nanoarchitectures for developing innovative biosensing platforms that will be able to trap and detect objects at the single‐molecule level is forwarded. A succinct overview of the potentials of various geometries of plasmonic nanoarchitectures for single‐molecule analysis is presented. Particular focus is given to exploiting individual nanoparticles, coupled nanodimers, nanoapertures, nanoporous metasurfaces, and picocavities for single‐molecule explorations. Finally, utilizing plasmonic nanopore geometry as a potential candidate for developing innovative biosensing platform that will be able to trap and detect single‐molecules is forwarded.

Abstract:An ideal sensor capable of quantifying analytes in minuscule sample volumes represents a significant technological advancement. Plasmonic nanoparticles integrated with optical dark-field spectroscopy have reached this capability, demonstrating versatility and expanding applicability across in vitro and in vivo subjects. This review underscores the applicability of optical dark-field spectroscopy with single plasmonic nanoparticles to elucidate a wide range of biomolecular characteristics, including binding constants, molecular dynamics, distances, and forces, as well as recording cell communication signals. Perspectives highlight the potential for the development of implantable nanosensors for metabolite detection in animal models, illustrating the technique's efficacy without the need for labeling molecules. In summary, this review aims to consolidate knowledge of this adaptable and robust technique for decoding molecular biological phenomena within the nano- and bio-scientific community.

Abstract:By combining different plasmonic nanostructures with conventional sensing configurations, chemical/biosensors with significantly enhanced device performance can be achieved. The fast development of plasmon-assisted devices benefits from the advance of nanofabrication technology. In this review, we first briefly show the experimental configurations for testing plasmon enhanced sensing signals and then summarize the classic nanogeometries which are extensively used in sensing applications. By design, dramatic increment of optical signals can be obtained and further applied to gas, refractive index and liquid sensing.
