Abstract:Porous crystalline conjugated macrocyclic materials (CMMs) possess high porosity, tunable structure/function and efficient charge transport ability owing to their planar macrocyclic conjugated pi-electron system, which make them promising candidates for applications in energy storage. In this review, we thoroughly summarize the timely development of porous crystalline CMMs in energy storage related fields. Specifically, we summarize and discuss their structures and properties. In addition, their energy storage applications, such as lithium ion batteries, lithium sulfur batteries, sodium ion batteries, potassium ion batteries, Li-CO2 batteries, Li-O2 batteries, Zn-air batteries, supercapacitors and triboelectric nanogenerators, are also discussed. Finally, we present the existing challenges and future prospects. We hope this review will inspire the development of advanced energy storage materials based on porous crystalline CMMs. This review provides a summary on the recent progress of porous crystalline conjugated macrocyclic materials in energy storage applications.

Abstract:To attain the objectives of carbon peaking and carbon neutrality, the development of stable and high-performance ion-conducting materials holds enormous relevance in various energy storage and conversion devices. Particularly, crystalline porous materials possessing built-in ordered nanochannels exhibit remarkable superiority in comprehending the ion transfer mechanisms with precision. In this regard, covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are highly regarded as a promising alternative due to their pre-eminent structural tunability, accessible well-defined pores, and excellent thermal/chemical stability under hydrous/anhydrous conditions. By the availability of organic units and the diversity of topologies and connections, advances in COFs have been increasing rapidly over the last decade and they have emerged as a new field of proton-conducting materials. Therefore, a comprehensive summary and discussion are urgently needed to provide an "at a glance" understanding of the prospects and challenges in the development of proton-conducting COFs. In this review, we target a comprehensive review of COFs in the field of proton conductivity from the aspects of design strategies, the proton conducting mechanism/features, the relationships of structure-function, and the application of research. The relevant content of theoretical simulation, advanced structural characterizations, prospects, and challenges are also presented elaborately and critically. More importantly, we sincerely hope that this progress report will form a consistent view of this field and provide inspiration for future research.

Abstract:In the fields of proton exchange membrane fuel cells as well as impedance recognition, molecular sieve, and biochemistry, the development of proton conductive materials is essential. The design and preparation of the next generation of proton conductive materials—crystalline metal–organic framework (MOF) materials with high proton conductivity and excellent water stability—are facing great challenges. Due to the large radius and high positive charge of lanthanides, they often interact with organic ligands to exhibit high coordination numbers and flexible coordination configurations, resulting in the higher stability of lanthanide-based MOFs (Ln-MOFs) than their transition metal analogues, especially regarding water stability. Therefore, Ln-MOFs have attracted considerable attention. This review offers a view of the latest progress of proton conductive Ln-MOFs, including synthesis strategy, structural characteristics, and advantages, proton conductivity, proton conductive mechanism, and applications. Abstract:Proton exchange membranes (PEMs), especially for work under intermediate temperatures (100-200 °C), have attracted great interest because of the high CO toleration and facial water management of the corresponding proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). Traditional polymer PEMs faced challenges of low stability and proton carrier leaking. Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), are promising to overcome these issues contributed by nanometer-sized channels. Herein we summarized the recent development of MOF/COF-based intermediate-temperature proton conductors. The strategies of framework engineering and pore impregnation were introduced in detail for raising proton conductivity. The proton-conducting mechanism was described as well. This spotlight will provide new insight into the fabrication of MOF/COF proton conductors under intermediate-temperature and anhydrous conditions.

Abstract:Polyoxometalates (POMs), also known as transition metal‐oxygen clusters deliver unique physical and chemical properties such as low effective surface charge density, high thermal stability, and multi-electron acceptance, making them suitable for proton conductors. In recent years, proton conductive POMs have achieved significant progress in high performance (>10 −2 S/cm) comparable to conventional materials through structural regulation strategies. At the same time, the veiled conduction mechanism has been elucidated by structural analysis and characterization. In this review, the research of POMs (Keggin-type, Dawson-type, composite materials) in proton conduction is reviewed mainly from the design strategy, proton conductivity and mechanism, structure-function relationship, and application, finally with a detailed discussion of challenges and prospects. This review will provide more inspiration for exploring and applying proton-conducting POM materials.

Abstract:Since the easy-to-design and customization of structures, guest accessibility of cavities, and functional tunability, MOFs have evolved into a burgeoning type of proton conductors. The sulfonic acid groups in MOFs can not only be used as proton sources but also can be involved in the formation of hydrogen bonds within the frameworks, which is extremely conducive to the efficient transfer of protons. In this review, recent advances of proton conductive sulfonate-based MOFs are provided covering sulfonic acid coordinated MOFs, MOFs encapsulated sulfate groups and the composite membrane contained these MOFs and so on. In-depth discussion of the relationship of structures and proton conducting properties on such MOFs is presented. Perspectives on the opportunities and challenges are proposed and highlighted.

Abstract:Proton conduction is a fundamental process in biology and in devices such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells. To maximize proton conduction, three-dimensional conduction pathways are preferred over one-dimensional pathways, which prevent conduction in two dimensions. Many crystalline porous solids to date show one-dimensional proton conduction. Here we report porous molecular cages with proton conductivities (up to 10−3 S cm−1 at high relative humidity) that compete with extended metal-organic frameworks. The structure of the organic cage imposes a conduction pathway that is necessarily three-dimensional. The cage molecules also promote proton transfer by confining the water molecules while being sufficiently flexible to allow hydrogen bond reorganization. The proton conduction is explained at the molecular level through a combination of proton conductivity measurements, crystallography, molecular simulations and quasi-elastic neutron scattering. These results provide a starting point for high-temperature, anhydrous proton conductors through inclusion of guests other than water in the cage pores.

Accelerating Anhydrous Proton Transport in Covalent Organic Frameworks: Pore Chemistry and Its Impacts

Abstract:Proton conduction is important in both fundamental research and technological development. Here we report designed synthesis of crystalline porous covalent organic frameworks as a new platform for high‐rate anhydrous proton conduction. By developing nanochannels with different topologies as proton pathways and loading neat phosphoric acid to construct robust proton carrier networks in the pores, we found that pore topology is crucial for proton conduction. Its effect on increasing proton conductivity is in an exponential mode other than linear fashion, endowing the materials with exceptional proton conductivities exceeding 10–2 S cm–1 over a broad range of temperature and a low activation energy barrier down to 0.24 eV. Remarkably, the pore size controls conduction mechanism, where mesopores promote proton conduction via a fast‐hopping mechanism, while micropores follow a sluggish vehicle process. Notably, decreasing phosphoric acid loading content drastically reduces proton conductivity and greatly increases activation energy barrier, emphasizing the pivotal role of well‐developed proton carrier network in proton transport. These findings and insights unveil a new general and transformative guidance for designing porous framework materials and systems for high‐rate ion conduction, energy storage, and energy conversion.

Abstract:This review summarizes recent progress on the understanding of mechanism, materials, influential factors, and characterization techniques of the protonic conduction on the surface of oxide ceramics, and discusses present problems and future perspectives. Surface protonic conduction originates from a common phenomenon of surface adsorption of water, which occurs almost everywhere when the temperature and humidity are properly controlled. Different from the volume transport of protons inside the oxide ceramics, which exhibits an Arrhenius relationship with the temperature and asks for at least 500 °C to activate sufficiently high proton conductivity, the surface protonic conduction exhibits an anti‐Arrhenius behavior, enabling to achieve high surface proton conductivity at much lower temperature (e.g., close to room temperature). Therefore, the surface protonic conduction is attracting increasing attention due to its promising application in the areas of low temperature catalysis and solid‐state electrochemical devices. This review paper summarizes recent progress on the mechanism, materials, influential factors, and characterization methods of the protonic conduction on the surface of oxide ceramics, and discusses present problems and future perspectives.

Abstract:Attracted by the excellent structural stability and structural diversity of the metal–organic frameworks based on main group metals, we review the proton conductive properties of such MOFs herein, and hope to provide comprehensive and accurate guidance for related research. The properties of these MOFs are classified and reviewed according to the types of main group metal elements (s-block and p-block). We mainly focus on the following aspects: preparation strategy and synthesis techniques, influence of organic ligands on the final structures, structural stability including thermal, water and chemical stability, the proton conductivity under humidity or anhydrous conditions, the proton conducting mechanisms, and the structure–property relationship. In the end, the highlights and deficiencies of the previous research and the future challenges and trend of the research will be highlighted.

Abstract:Crystalline porous materials (CPMs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) have captured widespread interest in various fields, such as gas storage and separation, sensor, catalysis, energy storage, biological engineering, etc. With increasing demand for synthesis of more diverse and functionalized CPMs, multivariate synthetic strategy has been used extensively to design and prepare novel CPMs by taking advantage of tunable void space, specific functionalities and desired structural stability. Abstract:Proton conductivity is the paramount property of proton-conducting materials that are playing significant roles in diverse electrochemical devices with applications in proton exchange membranes (PEMs) for fuel cells (PEMFCs). Considering the scarcity of fossil fuels, the development of clean and green renewable energy resources is in-demand across the globe. Toward this direction, the development of solid-state proton conductors is of significant interest. The higher structural tunability, lower density, good crystallinity, accessible well-defined pores, excellent thermal and chemical stability of covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) make them versatile platforms as proton conductors both under hydrous and anhydrous conditions. Taking advantage of such superior properties, the reports on proton-conducting COFs have been increasing swiftly since 2014, which demands a summarization and comprehensive discussion for "at a glance" visualization and further development. In this review, the COFs are showcased as a newer class of solid-state proton-conducting material. A comprehensive discussion is presented by organizing the strategies taken to develop the proton-conducting COFs. Establishment of structure–function relationships and the implementation of COFs as proton conductors are discussed as well. Moreover, challenges and future prospects are presented elaborately and are critically analyzed.

Theoretical Understanding of Mechanisms of Proton Exchange Membranes Made of 2D Crystals with Ultrahigh Selectivity

Abstract:Recent reports on proton conduction across pristine graphene and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) provide a new avenue for the design of proton exchange membranes. The uniform pores formed by the electron clouds of two-dimensional (2D) crystals can effectively block the undesired transportation of other species thus ultrahigh selectivity can be achieved. With the aid of first-principles calculations, we investigate the proton conduction process across six kinds of intact 2D crystals, namely graphene, h-BN, β12 boron sheet, χ3 boron sheet, phosphorene, and silicene. To clarify the proton conduction mechanism, three proton penetration modes are proposed: dissociation-penetration, adsorption-penetration, and direct penetration. Based on our calculation results, for graphene and h-BN without atomic defects, they are unlikely to provide sufficient proton conductivity at room temperature when no bias potential is applied. By contrast, the β12 boron sheet, χ3 boron sheets, and silicene exhibit relatively lower proton penetration energy barriers, making them prospective candidates for future proton exchange membrane applications.

Abstract:Developing new materials for anhydrous proton conduction under high-temperature conditions is significant and challenging. Herein, we create a series of highly crystalline covalent organic frameworks (COFs) via a pore engineering approach. We simultaneously engineer the pore geometry (generating concave dodecagonal nanopores) and pore surface (installing multiple functional groups such as -C=N-, -OH, -N=N- and -CF3 ) to improve the utilization efficiency and host-guest interaction of proton carriers, hence benefiting the enhancement of anhydrous proton conduction. Upon loading with H3 PO4 , COFs can realize a proton conductivity of 2.33×10-2 S cm-1 under anhydrous conditions, among the highest values of all COF materials. These materials demonstrate good stability and maintain high proton conductivity over a wide temperature range (80-160 °C). This work paves a new way for designing COFs for anhydrous proton conduction applications, which shows great potential as high-temperature proton exchange membranes.

Abstract:Crystalline porous materials, such as metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and covalent organic frameworks (COFs), have been demonstrated to be versatile material platforms for the development of solid proton conductors. However, most crystalline porous proton conductors suffer from decreasing proton conductivity with increasing temperature due to releasing water molecules, and this disadvantage severely restricts their practical application in electrochemical devices. In this work, for the first time, hydrophilic carbon dots (CDs) were utilized to hybridize with high proton conductivity MOF-802, which is a model of MOF proton conductors, aiming to improve its water-retention capacity and thus enhance proton conduction. The resultant CDs@MOF-802 exhibits impregnable proton conduction with increasing temperature, and the proton conductivity reaches 10<sup>-1</sup> S cm<sup>-1</sup>, much superior to that of MOF-802, making CDs@MOF-802 one of the most efficient MOF proton conductors reported so far. This study provides a new strategy to improve the water-retention capacity of porous proton conductors and further realize excellent proton conduction.
