A Highly Stretchable and Real‐Time Healable Supercapacitor

Abstract:In addition to a high specific capacitance, a large stretchability and self‐healing properties are also essential to improve the practicality and reliability of supercapacitors in portable and wearable electronics. However, the integration of multiple functions into one device remains challenging. Here, the construction of a highly stretchable and real‐time omni‐healable supercapacitor is demonstrated by sandwiching the polypyrrole‐incorporated gold nanoparticle/carbon nanotube (CNT)/poly(acrylamide) (GCP@PPy) hydrogel electrodes with a CNT‐free GCP (GP) hydrogel as the electrolyte and chemically soldering an Ag nanowire film to the hydrogel electrode as the current collector. The newly developed dynamic metal‐thiolate (M‐SR, M = Au, Ag) bond‐induced integrated configuration, with an intrinsically powerful electrode and electrolyte, enables the assembled supercapacitor to deliver an areal capacitance of 885 mF cm −2 and an energy density of 123 µWh cm −2 , which are among the highest‐reported values for stretchable supercapacitors. Notably, the device exhibits a superhigh stretching strain of 800%, rapid optical healing capability, and significant real‐time healability during the charge–discharge process. The exceptional performance combined with the facile assembly method confirms this multifunctional device as the best performer among all the flexible supercapacitors reported to date.

Abstract:Abstract Self-healability is essential for supercapacitors to improve their reliability and lifespan when powering the electronics. However, the lack of a universal healing mechanism leads to low capacitive performance and unsatisfactory intelligence. Here, we demonstrate a multi-responsive healable supercapacitor with integrated configuration assembled from magnetic Fe 3 O 4 @Au/polyacrylamide (MFP) hydrogel-based electrodes and electrolyte and Ag nanowire films as current collectors. Beside a high mechanical strength, MFP hydrogel exhibits fast optical and magnetic healing properties arising from distinct photothermal and magneto-thermal triggered interfacial reconstructions. By growing electroactive polypyrrole nanoparticles into MFP framework as electrodes, the assembled supercapacitor exhibits triply-responsive healing performance under optical, electrical and magnetic stimuli. Notably, the device delivers a highest areal capacitance of 1264 mF cm −2 among the reported healable supercapacitors and restores ~ 90% of initial capacitances over ten healing cycles. These prominent performance advantages along with the facile device-assembly method make this emerging supercapacitor highly potential in the next-generation electronics.

Abstract:A suite of wearable supercapacitors integrates the desirable properties of repeated shape editability, excellent self‐healing capability, and long‐term cycling durability. The supercapacitor sheets are repeatedly programmed into a series of shapes with no apparent loss in capacitance during the shape editing process. A strategy is proposed to enhance the long‐term cycling durability by utilizing hydrogel electrolytes with unique cross‐linking structures. Shape editability combined with a self‐healing capability and long‐term cycling durability are highly desirable properties for wearable supercapacitors. Most wearable supercapacitors have rigid architecture and lack the capacity for editability into desirable shapes. Through sandwiching hydrogel electrolytes between two electrodes, a suite of wearable supercapacitors that integrate desirable properties namely: repeated shape editability, excellent self‐healing capability, and long‐term cycling durability is demonstrated. A strategy is proposed to enhance the long‐term cycling durability by utilizing hydrogel electrolytes with unique cross‐linking structures. The dynamic crosslinking sites are formed by quadruple H bonds and hydrophobic association, stabilizing the supercapacitors from inorganic ion disruption during charge–discharge processes. The fabricated supercapacitors result in the capacitance retention rates of 99.6% and 95.8% after 5000 and 10 000 charge–discharge cycles, respectively, which are much higher than others reported in the literature. Furthermore, the supercapacitor sheets can be repeatedly processed into various shapes without any capacitance loss. The supercapacitors exhibit a 95% capacitance retention rate after five cutting/self‐healing cycles, indicative of their excellent self‐healing performance. To demonstrate real‐life applicability, the wearable supercapacitors are successfully used to power a light‐emitting diode and an electronic watch.

Abstract:Due to inherently poor healable and stretchable features, the most explored polyvinyl alcohol-based gel electrolytes cannot well meet the requirements of stretchable, healable and multifunctional supercapacitors. Here, we report a hydrogel of a copolymer cross-linked by double linkers of Laponite (synthetic hectorite-type clay) and graphene oxide. The resultant hydrogel shows high mechanical stretchability, excellent ionic conductivity, and superior healable performance. Along with designing wrinkled-structure electrodes, supercapacitors fabricated by using this hydrogel as a gel electrolyte not only exhibit ultrahigh mechanical stretchability of 1000%, but also achieve repeated healable performance under treatments of both infrared light irradiation and heating. More significantly, a broken/healed supercapacitor also possesses an ultrahigh stretchability up to 900% with slight performance decay. This hydrogel electrolyte could be easily functionalized by introducing other functional components, and extended for use in other portable and wearable energy related devices with multifunction.

Abstract:Next-generation wearable electronics are expected to endure significant deformations and mechanical damage. Therefore, self-healing stretchable electrolytes with high ionic conductivity and robust mechanical strength, that are high tolerance of deformations and to spontaneously recover electrochemical properties after external damage, are necessary conditions for the realization of flexible supercapacitors. Here, a new type of zwitterionic supramolecular hydrogels crosslinked through rationally designed ionic associations and hydrogen bonds is reported (PAD/H2SO4). The resultant supramolecular network realizes high ionic conductivity (57 mS cm-1) as well as unprecedented mechanical properties such as high toughness of 35000 J m-2, notch-insensitive up to 2200% strain, and efficient instantaneous self-healing within 5 minutes. Acting as electrolyte, a novel flexible supercapacitor design strategy is proposed by integrating capacitive materials directly onto the PAD/H2SO4 hydrogel to achieve exceptional electrochemical performance, which can be repeatable for at least 50 cutting/healing cycles. The facile and versatile strategy for construction of the integrated all-gel-state supercapacitors with self-healing stretchable electrolytes will provide new directions for future long-life flexible devices.

Abstract:Realizing autonomous self-healing and high stretchability of flexible supercapacitors over a wide temperature range remains a big challenge because of simultaneous incorporation of self-healing, stretchable and temperature-tolerant elements into a device as well as unfavorable electrochemical kinetics in harsh conditions. Here, we demonstrate for the first time an autonomous self-healing and intrinsically stretchable supercapacitor that can work at all-climate environments assembled by universally self-healing and highly stretchable organohydrogel electrodes with record-high temperature-invariant conductivity of ∼965 S/cm. Benefiting from multiple hydrogen bonding and dynamic metal coordination combined with electrochemistry-favorable components and integrated device configuration, the supercapacitor exhibits outstanding long-term stability, high stretchability, instantaneous and complete capacitive self-healability, and real-time mechanical healing at harsh temperatures from -35 to 80 °C. The superiorities in stretchability, self-healability, and all-climate tolerance enable the supercapacitor presented here as the best performer among the flexible supercapacitors reported to date.

Abstract:Supercapacitors with multiple functions, such as high capacitance, high flexibility and self-healing properties, are capturing more and more attention in portable and wearable electronics. Herein, an all-hydrogel supercapacitor with multiple functions was fabricated, by sandwiching the polyaniline (PANI)-polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel electrodes with a PVA-based hydrogel electrolyte which both contain the same healable and tough hydrogel matrix. The special efficient assembly between of PANI and PVA enables the hydrogel electrodes with superior electric conductivity of 136 S m−1 and large specific capacitance of 351 F g−1, as well as the great robustness and self-healing ability. The all-hydrogel supercapacitor exhibited a tensile strength of 2.21 MPa, a breaking elongation of 633%, a capacitance of 78.5 F g−1, and an energy density of 7.8 Wh kg−1. Due to its great toughness and flexibility, the supercapacitor could maintain stable energy output even after being subjected to various deformations (e. g., stretching, compressing, bending and even pinning). In addition, the severed supercapacitor could heal itself within 4 h at 70 °C, and the healed supercapacitor could restore good electrochemical properties with a healing efficiency of 49.8%. These highlighted properties enable this supercapacitor as a promising smart storage device for wearable application.

Abstract:Superior self-healability and stretchability are critical elements for the practical wide-scale adoption of personalized electronics such as portable and wearable energy storage devices. However, the low healing efficiency of self-healable supercapacitors and the small strain of stretchable supercapacitors are fundamentally limited by conventional polyvinyl alcohol-based acidic electrolytes, which are intrinsically neither self-healable nor highly stretchable. Here we report an electrolyte comprising polyacrylic acid dual crosslinked by hydrogen bonding and vinyl hybrid silica nanoparticles, which displays all superior functions and provides a solution to the intrinsic self-healability and high stretchability problems of a supercapacitor. Supercapacitors with this electrolyte are non-autonomic self-healable, retaining the capacitance completely even after 20 cycles of breaking/healing. These supercapacitors are stretched up to 600% strain with enhanced performance using a designed facile electrode fabrication procedure.

Abstract:With the continuous development of flexible electronic devices, the corresponding demands for electrochemical storage devices with flexibility and self-healing properties have been raised. However, the current supercapacitors still have great limitations in mechanical and self-healing performance. Herein, flexible and self-healing poly (2-acrylamido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid) (PAMPSA)/polyvinylimidazole (PVI)/LiCl polyelectrolyte is easily fabricated by a one-step copolymerization. The combined effect of electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding significantly enhances the mechanical and self-repairing ability of polyelectrolytes, showing excellent stretchability of 1137%, fracture stress of 154.57 kPa, and high healing efficiency of 91% at room temperature for 24 h. Besides, flexible electrode is prepared by adsorbing poly 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene/polystyrene sulfonate on a polyurethane sponge. After assembly with a polyelectrolyte, the as-prepared supercapacitor proves excellent electrochemical performance. The area capacitance is 106 mF cm−2 at 50 mV s−1 and excellent cycle stability (97% capacity retention rate after 2000 cycles). In addition, the completely cut off supercapacitor can be successfully restored to 90% of the original capacitance, and still maintain a capacitance retention rate of up to 98% after 1000 cycles. This work provides a possible solution for designing low-cost intelligent and durable electrochemical storage device for smart clothing or electronic skin.

Abstract:Flexible electrochemical energy storage devices have great potential in wearable and portable electronic devices. However, their practical applications have been deferred by mechanical damages such as repeated stretching, bending and squeezing. Self-healing hydrogel electrolytes can automatically repair such physical damages and maintain good electric contact at electrode/electrolyte interface. Herein, we report a hydrogel electrolyte with excellent tensile properties and good conductivity under large strain/stress. A solid state supercapacitor was further demonstrated, showing a high energy density of 21.3 Wh kg-1 at a power density of 350 W kg-1. The as-fabricated supercapacitor possesses good stretchability, with a 68% of retention of its initial capacitance after 40 breaking/healing cycles. The excellent self-healing capability of the hydrogel electrolyte can be attributed to the presence of hydrogen bonds and molecular chain fluidity within its structural motif. Our work provides promising routes towards developing new self-healing solid-state electrolytes for next-generation electrochemical energy storage and conversion applications with good performance and high safety.

Abstract:Flexible supercapacitors have attracted widespread attention due to the rapid development of wearable electronics. Nevertheless, most supercapacitors will degrade after being stretched and cannot work underwater. Here, a new kind of stretchable superhydrophobic supercapacitor was proposed. On the basis of the freeze–thaw treatment of PVA hydrogel, carrageenan and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were further introduced to construct a triple network hydrogel that achieved self-healing, high elasticity, and stretchability simultaneously. Then, hydrophobic modified CNTs and NiO/CoO nanoparticles were sprayed onto the surface of the hydrogel to construct electrodes. The energy storage performance was improved by combining pseudocapacitive (CoO and NiO) and electric double-layer capacitive (MWCNT) behaviors. The superhydrophobic supercapacitor has excellent flexibility, self-healing, and self-cleaning properties. Furthermore, it can maintain superhydrophobic and good energy storage performance even after being stretched 400%, abraded 65 cycles, and cut 20 times. Owing to superhydrophobicity, this supercapacitor would have a bright application for underwater workings.

Abstract:Stretchable supercapacitors have received widespread attention due to their potential applications in wearable electronics and health monitoring. Stretchable supercapacitors not only possess advantages such as high power density, long cycle life, safety, and low cost of conventional supercapacitors but also have excellent flexibility and stretchability, which make them well integrated with other wearable systems. In this review, various strategies to fabricate stretchable supercapacitors are focused. The preparation methods for stretchable electrodes/devices in the literature are carefully classified and analyzed. Three strategies for preparing stretchable electrodes/devices are summarized in detail-the design of elastic polymer substrates, stretchable electrode structures, and composite electrodes combined with elastic polymers and stretchable structures. Meanwhile, the interface problem of electrodes/devices in the stretching process is studied in depth. The research progress of multifunctional stretchable supercapacitors is also introduced. Finally, challenges and possible solutions that still need to be addressed in the future development of stretchable supercapacitors are highlighted and prospected. This review comprehensively discusses the latest research progress in the field of stretchable supercapacitors and systematically elucidates the electrochemical and mechanical properties of these devices, hoping to improve the roadmap for scientists and engineers to develop supercapacitors with high electrochemical performance and good stretchability.

Abstract:The popularization of personalized wearable devices has accelerated the development of flexible/stretchable supercapacitors (SCs) that possess remarkable features of miniaturization, high security, and easy integration to build an all-in-one integrated system, and realize the functions of comfortable, noninvasive and continuous health monitoring, motion records, and information acquisition, etc. This Review presents a brief phylogeny of flexible/stretchable SCs, represented by planar micro-supercapacitors (MSCs) and 1D fibrous SCs. The latest progress and advantages of different flexible/stretchable/self-healing substrate, solid-state electrolyte and electrode materials for the fabrication of wearable SCs devices are summarized. The various configurations used in planar MSCs and 1D fibrous SCs aiming at the improvement of performance are also discussed. In addition, from the viewpoint of practical value and large-scale production, a survey of integrated systems, from different types of SC powered wearable sensing (gas, pressure, tactile…) systems, wearable all-in-one systems (including energy harvest, storage, and functional groups), to device packaging is presented. Finally, the challenges and future perspectives of wearable SCs are also considered.

Abstract:During the past decade, flexible/stretchable energy storage devices have garnered increasing attention, with the successful development of wearable electronics. However, due to the repeated deformation accompanied with the electrochemical depletion process, these devices suffer from unavoidable damage, including cracks, crazing, puncture and delamination, which can lead to serious performance degradation or even safety issues. Simultaneously, inspired by biological organs, self-healing capability is found to be a promising approach to address these issues by restoring the mechanical and electrochemical performance. This review first summarizes the structural design and features of various flexible/stretchable energy storage devices, from 1D to 3D configurations. Then, basic concepts and three self-healing mechanisms, including capsule-based systems, vascular-based systems, and intrinsic healing systems are analyzed along with a brief look at existing applications. Then we review all the important parts of state-of-art flexible/stretchable self-healing supercapacitors and batteries including electrodes, electrolytes, substrates and encapsulation. Moreover, a detailed evaluation of methodologies for flexibility, stretchability and self-healing capabilities are described in detail. Finally, the critical challenges and prospects of future promising solutions for self-healing flexible/stretchable energy storage devices or even electronics are provided.

Abstract:The rise of personalized flexible electronics has promoted the rapid development of flexible supercapacitors due to their long service life, fast charging-discharging rates and safe operation. Different from the traditional flexible supercapacitors, the all-in-one integrated flexible supercapacitors are more resistant to deformation and lower interface resistance, which have a broader application prospect in the field of flexible electronics. This review briefly summarizes the preparation methods and electrochemical properties of some typical all-in-one supercapacitors, represented by planar and fibrous structures in recent years. Firstly, the basic understanding of traditional flexible supercapacitors and all-in-one integrated flexible supercapacitors, and the key parameters of the performance of flexible supercapacitors are introduced. Subsequently, the hydrogel matrix all-in-one supercapacitors with different functional characteristics (stretchable, self-healing and compressible) and the nonhydrogel matrix (separator, flexible membrane) all-in-one supercapacitors are discussed. Furthermore, the challenges and future development of flexible supercapacitors are considered.

Herein, a novel PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel electrolyte with slide-ring structure and hydrogen bonds was synthesized by copolymerization method. The PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel exhibits outstanding ionic conductivity (35 mS cm -1 ), remarkable self-healing behavior (healing efficiency of 91.3%) and large tensile strain (over 1000%). Furthermore, the supercapacitor with PAM/β-CD/EMIMBF 4 hydrogel electrolyte has a large specific capacitance (124 F g -1 ) and maintains 82.9% of its initial value after 5000 cycles. This study designed a multifunctional hydrogel electrolyte, which provides a promising insight for the development of emerging electronic products with customization functions.

Abstract:The inception of flexible supercapacitors that can work steadily under large deformation has been a research hotspot in recent years. To improve the device's stability, one needs to find innovative solutions to inevitable delaminations of electroactive components, which are resulted by relative displacement under external force. Herein, an extensive all-in-one hydrogel-based supercapacitor is designed. Based on the special physical properties of hydrogels, the polypyrrole-polyvinyl alcohol/dilute sulphuric acid-polypyrrole (PHP) sandwiched device shows the harmonious mechanical and electrical properties. When the tensile strain of PHP reaches to 110%, the areal capacitance still maintains at 90%. Similarly, the high areal capacitance retention under compression and twisting also verifies that the PPy active layer tightly permeates and adheres to the PVA-H2SO4 electrolyte layer. In addition to the fascinating mechanical properties, the undetectable contact angle reveals a superhydrophilic surface which is beneficial to provide an easy access for electrolyte ions, thus enhancing the electrochemical performance. Moreover, a stable cycle performance (97% after 10000 cycles) is obtained due to the excellent water retention ability which prevents the loss of electrolyte. The maximum extended voltage window is 1 V with the power density of 500 μW cm−2 (the energy density of 6.94 μW h cm−2). These hydrogel-based supercapacitors can be immune to the harm caused by external forces and maintain good mechanical integrity and electrochemical stability. Developing the hydrogel-based supercapacitors can provide a fresh perspective on multifunction applications and herald a new territory for flexible energy storage devices.
