Tourism Management Perspectives
Abstract:People with cancer consider wellness tourism to be an alternative way of seeking healing in China. However, how those people relate to tourism destinations and obtain healing effects is not well known. This study attempts to identify the mechanism by which tourists with cancer interact with material-social-affective resources in Bama Longevity Town to obtain healing effects through an examination of existing therapeutic assemblages. Nature acts as a sociomaterial “technology” to regenerate health, and sociability in Bama enables tourists' communication competence and empathy. Following that, affective atmospheres crucial for healing emerge. This study also demonstrates that the hope of “returning to normality” and “becoming well” drives the formation of assemblages in Bama, while the tourism context enables these processes. Overall, this article provides an insightful lens to understand wellness tourism and contributes to the advancement of the idea of therapeutic assemblages.
