Abstract:Users expect high and constant rendering frame rates when they interactively navigate in a Virtual Environment (VE). However, when the VE is too large to t into the main memory, the frame rates can become unacceptable. In this paper, we combine walkthrough semantics and database techniques, such as indexing, caching and prefetching, to improve the performance of walkthrough of a very large VE. We implemented a prototype walkthrough system called REVIEW (REaltime VIrtual Environment Walkthrough) and evaluated its performance on a 1 GB synthetic data-set generated to simulate a large cityscape. Our results show that the proposed techniques are e ective for generating constant frame rate and improving the visual e ects.

Abstract:Recent advances in Internet and WWW techniques motivate desire for systems with interactive 3D graphics on the Web, which draws attention and effectively assist human understanding with spatial intuitiveness and interactivity. Web-based application with virtual environment walkthrough capability is expected to have a profound impact to the travel based applications, such as virtual e-commerce, online travelling and shopping, just to name a few. However, it is well known that it is extremely difficult to render complex 3D scenes at interactive frame rates through the Web known for their lack of proper ability needed to process large volume of 3D virtual environment data. In order to provide virtual environment navigation on the Web, we propose a hybrid technique which combines both remote geometry rendering and image compression transportation technique. In our approach, the server renders a partial panoramic view, which is based on the user's viewpoint and last movements or sends image from real life. The server then compress images, and streams the images to the client device, which will progressively build the panoramic representation of the scene. Furthermore, in order to enhance streaming performance and quality of the interaction, we propose to use a prediction of the user's movements as well as a rate control mechanism within the virtual scene. In this paper we discuss our scheme for Web-based remote rendering and streaming of progressive panoramas. Our results indicate clearly that the proposed solution is able to achieve stable frame rates and throughput in general network environment.
BALANCING FIDELITY AND PERFOR MANCE IN VIRTUAL WALKTHROUGH

Abstract:In a virtual reality (VR) system, users expect both high visual quality as well as a high constant frame rate when they interact with the system (walkthrough). However, realizing these two requirements for very large virtual environments (VE) that cannot fit in the main memory has not been adequately addressed in the literature. In this paper, we present a novel access method, called ViSA (Vis ibility and Spatial data Access method) that, given a region of the current view point, returns the set of 3D objects of VEs that are visible from, as well as those that are in, the region. Ideally, these 3D objects will be loaded into memory and rendered during walkthrough. However, to balance the visual fidelity (showing all visible objects) and constant high frame rate, we dynamically determine the number and set of objects that are to be loaded based on the current memory size and frame rate. In order to minimize 110 cost, we propose an optimized search technique. We have implemented the ViSA structure in a prototype walkthrough system and our experiments show that it can provide quality visual fidelity with an acceptable constant real time frame rate.

Abstract:In this paper we utilize some hybrid rendering techniques combining image-based, point-based and geometry-based technique for the modeling and display of immersive virtual heritage environments (VHEs). This paper also uses a generic computation method of indirect illumination based on Monte Carlo sampling and on the sequential analysis theory, which is faster and more automatic than classical methods.The resulting VHEs aim to realistically recreate archaeological site that can be displayed in a range of immersive VR systems using a high-quality, view-dependent algorithm, the observer can act just like the ancients by interacting with the objects of the scenes. The observers are able to participate to lumber or fish in VHEs. We implement a collaborative system platform based on multi-PC called Multipro, which provide a platform to display immersive application which can be extended to be used in the areas of urban planning/architecture and cultural heritage education. In order to display photo-realistic virtual environment we implement a prototype system which is implemented on the Multipro. In order to enhance realism of the virtual environment, we adopt a view-dependent texture mapping technique to rendering the heritage model, furthermore the interaction and animation also are included into Hemudu virtual scenes, finally the lighting , vegetation rendering and hybrid rendering are addressed for enhancing the sense of realism. Examples of the prototype system in use are described and demonstrated in this paper.

Abstract:Although many virtual walkthrough system for visible scene have been carried out by now, little work has been reported about the virtual walkthrough of multi-spectral scene. In this paper, we present a virtual walkthrough system which can real-time simulate the dynamic multi-spectral scenes. We first construct the target and non-target areas with different kinds of modeling techniques such as geometry and texture based hybrid method, free viewpoint visual hulls and spectral depth image model. To realistically generate the multi-spectral images of objects under changed situations, we present a realistic imaging model which is suitable for both visual and infrared scene. We also propose a new model to simulate the effect of high-dynamic range. To further speed up the rendering process, several simplification and acceleration techniques like LOD, pre-calculation and GPU are adopted. Finally the virtual real-time walkthrough of large-scale multi-spectral scenes is successfully carried out and the average walkthrough speed is larger than 30 frames per second.

Abstract:With recent technological advances, electronic learning (e-learning) has been enabled to operate via the World Wide Web (WWW). Being an important education method, online virtual experiment systems have also been developed greatly over the last few years. These have been used to aid education in certain areas, e.g. control engineering and the understanding of physical phenomena. For the sake of aiding the education of undergraduates in an experimental engineering curriculum, we have developed the infrastructure of a virtual reality (VR) form of Web-based Virtual Laboratory (WBVL). Using this infrastructure, we have successfully implemented several virtual chemical and mechanical engineering experiments. With its four important features (3D, interactive, Web based and virtual), WBVL can make its users feel as if they are performing a real-world experiment. VRML is used to build the virtual 3D scene, and Script nodes, EAI (External Authoring Interface) and SDK (Software Development Kit) are used to extend VRML's interactive and computational abilities. Using a client/server model, WBVL has a well-defined system architecture. The set-up of WBVL is composed of a user's guide, laboratory experiments, online help and experiment reporting. The "combined model" is the most-used virtual experiment operation model of WBVL.

Abstract:In order to represent real world precisely, the hybrid approach using geometric modeling and image based rendering is promising. Based on the existing algorithms of creating geometric model of buildings with texture mapping from pictures, this paper presents a virtual environment construction and walkthrough system, named VECW. The system supports modeling from photographs and accepts the common model data form of Wavefront. Using the system, users can edit the positions and material properties of models in the scene, and also the lighting environment. Especially, it can save the scene data as VRML file. This system helps to construct a virtual scene conveniently and walkthrough it. Examples illustrate the efficiency of the system.

Abstract:With the development and popularization of virtual reality (VR) technology, it has been widely used in the field of online experimental education. Due to the large volume of VR digital assets for online experimental education, the existing VR digital asset management systems have problems such as low bandwidth utilization and high latency. In this research, in order to alleviate these problems, we designed a novel VR digital asset distributed management system, which is composed of a micro-service module, a distributed storage sub-module, a distributed retrieval module and a user module. The system has the ability to integrate centralized cloud storage and distributed storage at the same time, has secondary development interfaces, has multiple customer service terminals, supports Operation Support Systems, InterPlanetary File System and other storage modes, and has developed a complete set of Restful API interfaces to facilitate upper-level application calls. Finally, experiments demonstrate that the system has the characteristics of decentralization, high bandwidth utilization and low latency.
Image Based Real-time Walkthrough in Virtual Environment

Abstract:An image-based parallel rendering technology is proposed to achieve real-time interactive walkthrough in virtual 3D scene by dividing the image into strip regions. In order to achieve load balancing, sub-tasks are assigned according to the computation capacity of each node. Moreover, by exploiting the coherency of neighboring frames, a communication strategy combining with run length encoded compression algorithm is presented to reduce communication cost. Experiment results show that real-time interactive walkthrough with 512 × 512 image is achieved by employing PC cluster.

Abstract:In this paper, we describe a client-server image-based walkthrough system. This system employs pictures, panoramas, and concentric mosaics captured from real scenes. These data are compressed and stored in a remote server, and can be retrieved over the Internet. Rather than transmitting a video sequence frame by frame, our system at the client end allows users to selectively retrieve image segments at specific viewpoints and viewing directions. This selective retrieval is achieved by implementing a client-server communication protocol. Cache strategies are designed to ensure a smooth viewing experience for the users. Experiments show that within a local area network, our system can reach over 15 frames per second (fps) with a resolution of 360× 288 pixels while the user is rotating and 3 fps while the user is translating. Even with a 56Kbps modem, our system can still reach over 15 fps with a resolution of 180× 144 pixels for rotation and 1 fps for translation. With partial cache scheme, our system uses no more than 1MB of RAM at the client end. Therefore our system is particularly suitable for online virtual tours, shopping, and communication on hand-held, palm-size PCs or mobile phones.

Abstract:Real-time rendering of complex 3D scene on mobile devices is a challenging task. The main reason is that mobile devices have limited computational capabilities and are lack of powerful 3D graphics hardware support. In this paper, we propose an Image-Based Rendering (IBR) system for mobile devices to visualize real-world or synthetic scenes in network environment. Our system uses server for computing the required image segments of pre-captured panoramic video, and transmitting them to client. After receiving data, mobile client carries out rendering using simple image warping. The rendering process needs less computational power and is insensitive to the scene's complexity. A rate-control scheme is designed for efficient use of network bandwidth for handling network congestion. Pre-fetching and cache management are also considered on client and server sides for efficient memory use and reducing transmission request. With this client-server architecture and local rendering scheme, interactive exploration of 3D scene on mobile devices becomes possible. Experimental results show that our system can achieve acceptable rendering speed on common mobile devices.

It is well known that when the viewer walks through the scenequickly, he actually pays little attention to the detail of the scene. Abstract:This paper proposes a new preprocessing method for interactive rendering of complex polygonal virtual environments. The approach divides the space that observer can reach into many rectangular viewpoint regions. For each region, an outer rectangular volume (ORV) is established to surround it. By adaptively partitioning the boundary of the ORV together with the viewpoint region, all the rays that originate from the viewpoint region are divided into the beams whose potentially visible polygon number is less than a preset threshold: If a resultant beam is the smallest and intersects many potentially visible polygons, the beam is simplified as a fixed number of rays and the averaged color of the hit polygons is recorded For other beams, their potentially visible sets (PVS) of polygons are stored respectively. During an interactive walkthrough, the visual information related to the current viewpoint is retrieved from the storage. The view volume clipping, visibility culling and detail simplification are efficiently supported by these stored data. The rendering time is independent of the scene complexity.

Abstract:Based on the overly technique, the authors propose a novel algorithm for interactive walkthrough of complex polygonal virtual environments with global specular reflection effects in this paper. This algorithm integrates the global specular reflection preprocessing with visibility preprocessing. The problem of computing global specular reflection is then converted to that of determining the potential visible polygon set (PVS) through each mirror. A mirror-PVS-mapping G is constructed, associating the potential incidence beams with their respective PVS. At the stage of walkthrough, the proposed algorithm can synthesize the global specular reflection in real time by G mapping while calculating the other intensity components of the environment.

Abstract:A new algorithm that combines visibility precomputing and image-based rendering to accelerate walkthroughs of complex scenes is presented in the paper, In the preprocessing phase, our algorithm samples the environment in a 3D lattice structure, tile potentially visible surface list of square-frustum at each cell in the lattice are pre-computed and stored in a cube at the center of the cell. Thr intermediate views of the whole scent: from any viewpoint inside the cell are generated by rendering only the potentially visible surfaces lying within the current view-frustum. Environment map: synthesized by the image of distant visible surfaces in tile PVSLs, are employed to speedup the algorithm further. Experiment results show that only a small fraction of the surfaces in a complex scene are involved in the rendering phase by our algorithm, so it is not only very effective for densely occluded environments, but also suitable for mostly unoccluded outdoor scenes.

Abstract:Most practical virtual environments are constructed of 3D models with top-quality textures. Therefore, large application systems of distributed virtual environment inevitably involve huge transmission of texture data. However, transmitting huge texture data over the network will bring severe delays that would affect the characteristics of reality and real-time of Distributed Virtual Environment. To solve this problem we have implemented the texture progressive transmission with the classic Laplacian pyramid algorithm and the Haar transform algorithm. The experimental results in our prototype DVE system show that these two algorithms both effectively decrease initial load latency. However the former algorithm increases the data amount needed to represent a texture map while the latter keeps the amount unchanged. Furthermore to lighten the burden of the network, we use some data compression methods to reduce the total number of the data to be transmitted in our DVE system.

Abstract:The last years have witnessed a dramatic growth in the number as well as the variety of graphics intensive mobile applications, which allow users to interact and navigate through large scenes such as ancient places, museums and even virtual cities. These applications support many clients and impose a heavy requirement on network resources and computational resources. One key issue in the design of cost efficient mobile walkthrough applications is the data transmission between servers and mobile client devices. In this paper, we propose an effective progressive mesh transmission framework that stores and divide scene objects into different resolutions. This way, each mobile progressively receives and process the only object's details that match with its display resolution, and hence improving the user's perception and overall system's response time. A fine grained cache mechanism is used to keep the most frequently requested objects' details in the device memory and consequently reduce the network traffics. Lastly, practical experiments are carried out to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework under various setting of the virtual scene and mobile devices configuration/types.

Abstract:This paper presents an image based rendering approach for interactive walkthrough in large and complex environments. Parallel technique is introduced to improve the computation capability. The display window is divided into several strip regions that represent sub-tasks to be assigned to rendering nodes. In order to achieve load balancing, we dynamically test the node performance, and adjust the task distribution scheme to guarantee that each node is distributed with proper size of sub-task to match its computation capability. Moreover, a communication strategy combined with run length encoded compressing algorithm is presented to reduce the communication cost. By exploiting the coherency of frame-to frame, the new generated frame is compared with previous frame to compute the difference. So the previous frame can be reused and only the difference compressed by RLE need to be sent. BY employing four PCs, we achieve the rate of 12 frames per second, which is more than 3 times of that on a single PC.

Abstract:Real-time rendering for large-scale, complex dynamic virtual scenes is a challenging problem in computer graphics. In this paper, we propose a hybrid rendering algorithm of dynamic virtual environments that seamlessly fuses the point-based scheme and polygon-based scheme. In our algorithm, the scene is organized into a BSP-tree. Objects in the leaf-nodes of the BSP tree are further subdivided into a quad-tree hierarchy, which contains both the sample points and polygon rendering information at each level. The accelerated rendering algorithm integrates the hierarchical occlusion map technique, image caching technique and BSP technique to fast render complex dynamic scenes. During navigation, our system adaptively determines the rendering mode and the level of details of objects, and achieves smooth transition between the two rendering modes by effectively controlling the rendering precision. The dynamic objects can be processed in the system uniformly. Our experimental results have demonstrated the satisfactory performance of the proposed hybrid-rendering scheme for the dynamic virtual environments.
