Abstract:Janus nanomaterials composed of two compartments with dissimilar compositions and/or functionalities have garnered considerable interest over the past several decades owing to their diverse nanostructures and intriguing properties arising from the two constituents and microstructures. Janus polymer/inorganic nanocomposites represent a class of unique materials that afford synergistic features of polymers and inorganic substance, rendering appealing properties and promising applications. Various synthetic routes have been developed to craft a host of Janus materials with tunable composition, morphology and microstructures. This review focuses on the recent advances in rational design, precision synthesis, and performance of a set of Janus polymer/inorganic nanocomposites. Four main synthetic strategies are discussed, including Pickering emulsion interfacial synthesis, conventional emulsion interfacial synthesis, confined self-assembly of block copolymers, and seeded swelling emulsion polymerization. The detailed synthetic methods and strictly Janus characteristics are highlighted. This review aims to attract broad interests in the polymer and nanomaterial communities by directing the research focus on judicious design and synthesis as well as large-scale production of Janus polymer/inorganic nanocomposites, thereby imparting the further exploration of their extraordinary attributes and practical applications.

Abstract:Janus polymerization combines cationic and anionic polymerizations at two ends of a single propagating chain involving a living/controlled chain-growth polymerization and a self-triggered stepwise polycondensation, which provides a facile way to synthesize novel polymers with sophisticated topologies in one step directly from monomers. Di-/Multi-block copolymers, branch polymers, mikto-arm star copolymers and cylindrical polymer brushes are synthesized using rare earth triflates catalysts assisted by various epoxy initiators owing to their specific position at the middle of the chain. This work reviews recent progress on Janus polymerization in our group. Specifically, the characteristic of rare earth metal catalysts and mechanism of Janus polymerization are discussed in detail where tripedal crows are employed to illustrate the mechanism. New methodologies for the construction of topological polymers are introduced, together with the unique and prominent properties, such as thermoplastic properties, self-assembly and self-healing behaviors and the corresponding applications in self-sealing films for plants and electrostatic spinning. A new Janus system is put forward which affords a facile synthetic method for functional polyesters by incorporating a modifiable monomer 3,3-bis(chloromethyl)oxacyclobutane. Finally, the development of Janus polymerization including new catalytic systems and monomers is also prospected. The concept of Janus polymerization makes significant breakthroughs into traditional cognitions about incompatible cationic and anionic polymerization mechanisms in one system which motivates the power in the catalysis and synthesis of polymer chemistry.
Diblock Copolymer Based Janus Nanoparticles

Abstract:We present a facile and versatile approach to prepare diblock copolymer based Janus nanoparticles (NPs). Diblock copolymer PS-b-P4VP can self-assemble into patchy particles with P4VP protuberances on their surface using the emulsion solvent evaporation method. After cross-linking the P4VP protuberances, Janus NPs are produced by disassembling the particles. Within the P4VP domains, other species including metallic and inorganic are preferentially grown to extend composition and functionality. The Janus NPs are amphiphilic and capable to self-organize into superstructures. The size ratio of P4VP/PS and thus the Janus balance of the NPs are tunable by changing block chain length ratio of the block copolymers.

Abstract:We present a facile approach toward straightforward synthesis of Janus nanoparticles (NPs) of poly(4-vinylpyridine)-based block copolymers by solvent evaporation induced assembly within emulsion droplets. Formation of the Janus NPs is arisen from the synergistic effect between solvent selectivity and interfacial selectivity. This method is robust without the requisites of narrow molecular weight distribution and specific range of block fraction of the copolymers. Janus NPs can also be achieved from mixtures of copolymers, whose aspect size ratio and thus Janus balance are finely tunable. The Janus NPs are capable to self-assemble into ordered superstructures either onto substrates or in dispersions, whose morphology relies on Janus balance.
One-pot Synthesis of Octablock Copolymers of High-Molecular Weight Via RAFT Emulsion Polymerization

Abstract:Multiblock copolymers (mBCPs) could offer new opportunities to design new nanomaterials with multifunctions or enhanced properties in a cost-effective way. However, it is still very challenging to obtain high degree of polymerization in each block of mBCPs with large block number using one-pot synthesis via controlled radical polymerizations. This is due to the accumulation of the dead chains throughout the many step polymerization. In this work, we developed a new highly efficient strategy for preparing mBCPs with large block number using one-pot reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) emulsion polymerization, where every polymer block was formed by sequential addition of monomers. We achieved high block degree of polymerizations (similar to 100 per block) for a model system of "octablock" polystyrene (PS) in just 2 hr per block. Experimentally measured molecular weights are in excellent agreement with theoretical predictions. The dead chains generated through the polymerization are negligible due to the low initiator concentration. Yet the polymerization rates are still very fast due to the heterogeneous advantages of emulsion polymerization. We have also applied this strategy to a series of mBCPs from diblock (PS176-PnBA(286))(1) to octablock (PS176-PnBA(286))(4) (PnBA for poly(n-butyl acrylate)). The high degree of polymerization in our mBCPs ensures microphase separation even though PS/PnBA system is known for small chi values. We have also found that the tensile properties of our mBCPs increase significantly with increased number of blocks. Our work reveals that the number of blocks is an important molecular variable for tuning the mechanical properties of block copolymers.

Abstract:Janus particles have a noncentral symmetric structure. Since they have two or more different physical and chemical properties, they show different properties and application potential of isotropic particles. Janus nanoparticles have been extensively used in catalysts, surfactants, nanosensors and cancer therapy. This review outlines the different types of techniques for designing and synthesizing Janus nanoparticles. It also describes the latest developments in Janus nanoparticle research in cancer treatment, catalysis, nanosensors and surfactants over the past few years. Finally, the future orientations of the research and the possibilities of application are discussed.

Abstract:This chapter reviews recent progress in the emerging field of synthesis, self-assembly, and applications of amphiphilic Janus nanoparticles (JNPs) and triblock JNP analogs formed by the phase separation of ligands on the inorganic nanoparticle (NP) surface. In particular, JNPs, composed of NPs tethered with phase-separated polymer brushes, have recently emerged as a novel class of building blocks for fabricating new functional hybrid materials. This type of JNP shows great promise in the nanoscale design of new hybrid materials with increasing complexity and functionality. On the one hand, the JNPs can be structurally considered as organic molecular analogs that are capable of self-assembly at multiple hierarchical levels. On the other hand, the assembly of JNPs is significantly different from molecular assembly owing to their unique dimensions, hybrid composition, complex geometry, and multiscale interactions throughout the course of assembly. In this chapter, we will summarize the recent progresses on the self-assembly of JNPs into functional materials and their corresponding biological applications.

Abstract:Block copolymer single crystals (BCPSCs) have attracted widespread attentions due to their unique two-dimensional (2D) structure, good controllability, and great potential applications in recent years. In this paper, the morphology, surface structure of BCPSCs and the related influencing factors are reviewed. We also summarize the studies of 2D crystalline assemblies of block copolymers (BCPs) driven by crystallization and intermolecular pi-pi interaction. Moreover, the functionalization and properties of BCPSCs and 2D crystalline assemblies of BCPs are introduced. Finally, we put forward some unsolved problems in this field.

Abstract:Named after the two-faced Roman god, Janus particles are defined by their distinct dual chemical compositions on a single particle. Research on micron-sized Janus particles has yielded remarkable insights, showcasing their unique assembly behaviors both in bulk and at interfaces. However, significant challenges persist, particularly in the synthesis of smaller (< 500 nm) Janus particles (JPs), which remains complex and difficult to scale up. To date, there has been no commercial success with JPs. Recently, seeded synthesis methods, such as emulsion polymerization that already employed in industrial-scale manufacturing, have shown great promise. These methods enable the production of high-quality JPs with different sizes, morphologies, and functionalities. This advancement has inspired more efforts in exploring JP applications across various fields, including emulsion stabilization, drug delivery, electronic devices, and coatings. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the recent progress in the synthesis and application of polymeric JP, with an emphasis on the seeded synthesis approach. It discusses the underlying reaction mechanisms and explores different strategies for controlling JP morphology. Serving as a roadmap, this review aims to guide the design of novel functional JPs and their potential future applications. The successful implementation of JPs will require careful consideration and a deep understanding of both synthesis and applications, as these are indeed two sides of the same coin.

Abstract:Comprehensive SummaryJanus polymerization consists of anionic and cationic ring opening polymerizations (AROP and CROP) at the two ends of a single propagating polymer chain, followed by a self‐triggered chain extension generating multiblock copolymers (MBCPs) in one step. In the contribution, Janus polymerization by Tm(OTf)3 or Er(OTf)3 catalyst with an epoxy initiator is applied to synthesize MBCPs of semi‐crystalline poly(ε‐caprolactone) (PCL) blocks from coordinated AROP and poly(1,3‐dioxolane‐co‐ε‐caprolactone) (P(DO‐co‐CL)) blocks from CROP of DO with CL. Meanwhile, amorphous random copolymers [P(DO‐r‐CL)] are synthesized as control by employing other rare earth triflates [RE(OTf)3, RE = Y, Nd, Gd and Lu] as catalysts or in the absence of an initiator via CROP. On account of the distinguishable chemical structures and thermal properties between Janus MBCPs and cationic random copolymers, Janus features are confirmed including the CROP and AROP at a single propagating chain. The resultant amphiphilic copolymers self‐assemble to nanoparticles in aqueous solution with designable diameters with the corresponding ratios of hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments. MBCPs exhibit good shape memory properties with appropriate deformation temperature close to human body's, providing a prospect on the applications in biomedical devices.

Abstract:Z. Z. Yang, J. Zhu, F. X. Liang, and co-workers develop on page 4469 a facile approach to synthesize regular and uniform polymeric Janus nanodiscs with alternative layers of block copolymers by partial disintegration of ellipsoidal nano particles. Further selective growth of materials onto the desired sides of the discs extends the composition and tunes the microstructure for achieving functional nanodiscs. Many other Janus nanomaterials with tunable shapes are expected using similar methods.

Abstract:Block copolymer are ideal matrices to control the localisation of colloids. Furthermore, anisotropic nanoparticles such as Janus nanoparticles possess an additional orientational degree of freedom that can play a crucial role in the formation of highly ordered materials made of block copolymers. This work presents a mesoscopic simulation method to assert the co-assembly of Janus nanoparticles in a block copolymer mixture, finding numerous instances of aggregation and formation of ordered configurations which can be related to dispersions of pure Janus colloids. Comparison with chemically homogeneous neutral nanoparticles determines that Janus nanoparticles are less prone to induce bridging along lamellar domains, thus being a less destructive way to segregate nanoparticles at interfaces. The combination of asymmetric block copolymer and asymmetric Janus nanoparticles can result in assembly of colloids in an even number of layers within one of the block domains.

Abstract:Janus nanoparticles with two chemically different compartments have been shown to be a unique class of building blocks in solution, Here we perform mesoscale simulations to explore the self-assembly of Janus nanoparticles with widely varying architectures in diblock copolymers. We demonstrate that the coassembly of these amphiphilic building blocks forms novel and tunable structures at the interfaces of block copolymers, and consequently influences the interface stabilization and structural evolution kinetics. Our simulations suggest that Janus nanoparticle self-assembly at block copolymer interfaces yields considerable control over the creation of polymer nanocomposites with improved shear behavior. In this context, the approach is a viable strategy for creating functional materials with enhanced processing properties.

Abstract:Gold Janus nanomaterials have a tremendous significance for the novel bifunctional materials, significantly expanding the application scope of gold nanomaterials, especially Janus gold-thiol coordination polymer due to their exceptional biological characteristics, stability, plasmon effect, etc. The recent research on Janus gold nanoparticles and monolayer films of preparation and application has been summarized and in this review. To begin, we briefly introduce overview of Janus nanomaterials which received intense attention, outline current research trends, and detail the preparation and application of gold nanomaterials. Subsequently, we present comprehensively detailing fabrication strategies and applications of Janus gold nanoparticles. Additionally, we survey recent studies on the Janus gold nano-thickness films and point out the outstanding advantage of application on the tunable surface plasmon resonance, high sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering and electrical analysis fields. Finally, we discuss the emerging trends in Janus gold nanomaterials and address the associated challenges, thereby providing a comprehensive overview of this area of research.
Janus Composite Nanorod from a Molecular Bottlebrush Containing a Block Copolymer.

Abstract:The asymmetric ABC-type Janus polymer composite nanorods are synthesized by the in situ preferential growth of functional materials against the molecular bottlebrush containing a triblock copolymer of poly(ethylene oxide)-b-poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl pentynoate-g-poly(acrylic acid))-b-polystyrene. PEO and PS single chains are terminated onto the opposite ends of the composite nanorods. The two polymer chains are responsible for amphiphilic performance, while the composite nanorod is responsible for the functionality. The Janus nanorods can stand vertically at an emulsion interface, making the interfaces easily functionalized and manipulated. Protection of the PAA molecular bottlebrush via electrostatic interaction is important to obtaining individual nanorods at high solid contents. A huge family of Janus composite nanorods is expected by changing the compositions of the two polymer chains and the nanorod.

Abstract:Although the concept of Janus particles was raised in the early 1990s, the related research has not attracted considerable interest until recently due to the special properties and applications of these colloidal particles as well as the advances in new fabrications. Janus particles can be divided into three categories: polymeric, inorganic, and polymeric-inorganic, and each kind of Janus particles can be spherical, dumbbell-like, half raspberry-like, cylindrical, disk-like, or any of a variety of other shapes. Different Janus particles may share common preparation principles or require specific fabrication processes, and may have different assembly behaviours and properties. This critical review discusses the main fabrication methods of the three kinds of Janus particles, and then highlights the important properties and applications of these Janus particles developed in recent years, and finally proposes some perspectives on the future of Janus particle research and development.

Abstract:Janus is named after the Roman god who is depicted to have two opposite faces looking at the past and the future. In 1991, de Gennes introduced the Janus particles in his Nobel lecture. Janus materials have triggered extensive research interests in academia and industry. Janus composites possess two different chemical regions and functions that are distinctly compartmentalized onto the same object. While the organic polymer components provide tunable wettability and responsive performances, the inorganic (or metallic) components offer desired functionalities such as magnetic manipulation and light thermal effect. We have developed methods to precisely tune shape, size, microstructure and chemistry of Janus composites and therefore their performance. In analogy to molecular surfactants or copolymers, the amphiphilic Janus composites can stabilize interfaces more effectively. Similarly, the Janus composites can serve as emulsifiers in emulsion polymerization and as compatibilizers for polymer alloys. Moreover, the interfaces stabilized with the Janus composites can be easily manipulated by using external stimuli, and functionalized by delivering desired species thereby. By grafting responsive polymer chains, the emulsions can be de-stabilized by simple changing pH, temperature, light irradiation or exchanging of ions. When Janus composites contain paramagnetic species, the emulsion droplets can be withdrawn with a magnet. The droplets are further coalesced, leading to de-emulsification under a stronger magnetic field. This performance is important to remedy polluted water or soil with organic species in the presence of surfactants. By conjugation of heterogeneous catalysts onto the Janus composites, the catalytic efficiency of the catalysts is greatly enhanced. Functional species such as Fe3O4 or Au nanoparticles (NPs) can be delivered toward an oil/water interface when these NPs are grafted with hydrophobic and thermally responsive chains such as PNIPAM at the opposite sides. The de-emulsification can be easily achieved under NIR irradiation even when the continuous phase temperature is below the LCST of PNIPAM (similar to 32 degrees C). The performance is enhanced from an interactive interplay between the hyperthermia effect of nanoparticles and a thermal energy transfer to fast locally heat PNIPAM. This performance is promising in heterogeneous catalysis and recycling of expensive catalysts. Wettability of Janus composites can be significantly magnified by nanoscale roughness. Robust superhydrophobic coatings are easily fabricated by forming a self-assembled monolayer of coarsening Janus microparticles and catalytic crosslinking the intermediate epoxy resin adhesive. In this Review, recent progress in manipulation of interfaces by Janus composites is summarized, including in emulsions and polymer alloys, interfacial heterogeneous catalysis, functional coatings, cell diagnosis and therapy.

Abstract:Janus composites with two different components divided on the same object have gained growing interest in many fields, such as solid emulsion stabilizers, sensors, optical probes and self‐propellers. Over the past twenty years, various synthesis methods have been developed including Pickering emulsion interfacial modification, block copolymer self‐assembly, microfluidics, electro co‐jetting, and swelling emulsion polymerization. Anisotropic shape and asymmetric spatial distribution of compositions and functionalities determine their unique performances. Rational design and large scale synthesis of functional Janus materials are crucial for the systematical characterization of performance and exploitation of practical applications.

Abstract:<p>Anisotropic Janus nanoparticles have been widely investigated in recent years on both the nanoparticles preparation strategies and the advanced applications. Janus nanoparticles possess biphasic geometry of distinct compositions or asymmetric morphologies that bring distinct novel properties. Janus nanoparticles have been widely used in various applications such as catalysts, nanomotors, and nanomedicine. In biomedical fields, the special spatially separated surface chemistry of Janus nanoparticles provides efficient targeting and delivery capability, which can be used to design next generation delivery vectors. Moreover, the unique asymmetric morphology of Janus nano-particles exhibits unusual behaviours when internalized by cells. Janus nanoparticles can be developed as new probes to investigate the nanoparticle-cell interaction during the critical cellular delivery processes. This review focuses on recent progress of the design and synthesis of novel Janus nanoparticles and their unusual performance in cellular delivery related applications. The advantages and new opportunities of Janus nanoparticles as cellular delivery vectors are discussed.</p>

Abstract:A general approach is proposed to synthesize Janus polymer/inorganic composite nanosheets. Onto the amine-group-terminated side of the Janus inorganic nanosheets, initiators are covalently bonded. By a favorable grafting from initiator-terminated side, responsive polymers, for example PDEAEMA and PNIPAM, are synthesized by controlled polymerization for example ATRP or RAFT polymerization. Stable emulsions are easily formed in the presence of the Janus nanosheets, which can be easily de-emulsified by subtle changing physicochemical parameters, for example temperature and pH.
