Abstract:We suggest here a possible classification of the thermodynamical potentials for phase transition systems with two state variables. Within each of the single-typed classes, the characters and typical diagrams of the internal energy, enthalpy, Helmholtz and Gibbs free energy are shown. Multivalued potentials appear to be the rules rather than the exceptions. Several known examples of phase transitions, e.g, van der Waals gas, Landau-Devonshire model, are studied within the framework of the present classification.

Abstract:bstract In the framework of Dyson-Schwinger equation (DSE) approach, we propose a chemical potential dependent effective gluon propagator and the quark gap equation is solved with such a gluon propagator. It is found for the first time in DSE approach that with light current quark mass m ≠ 0, the Wigner solution will appear at some chemical potential μ W . Based on this, the chiral phase transition at finite chemical potential is studied and the result shows that it is a first-order phase transition. The results are compared with the known results in the literature.

Abstract:We investigate the chemical potential effects of the equation of state and the chiral transition in an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton-scalar system, which is obtained from an improved soft-wall AdS/QCD model coupled with an Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system. The equations of state obtained from the model are in quantitative agreement with the lattice results at both zero and nonzero chemical potentials. The sensible chiral transition behaviors can be realized in the model. The QCD phase diagram with a CEP has also been obtained from the model.

Abstract:In this paper ,the phase transition process in two element system is simulated by using both of the Windows graphical operation interface and the powerful phase diagrams function of the Thermo Calc(TC) software .Firstly ,two typical phase diagrams of the two alloys were plotted ,and then from this phase diagram by the lever rule , the phase composition and the corresponding thermodynamic data as well as the thermodynamic properties of the system at the condition of equilibrium were obtained .By using this software ,we can not only quickly and accurately calculate the thermodynamic process ,obtain the relevant parameters of material .But also we could greatly save time and reduce the cost of design and development .Especially ,it is more important that for students to learn the basic method of solving practical problems by using computer simulation ,it could fully mobilize students′learning interest and also enhance the passion for self dependant innovation in the teaching and scientific research .

Abstract:We construct a hadron-quark two-phase model based on the Walecka-quantum hadrodynamics and the improved Polyakov-Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model with an explicit chemical potential dependence of Polyakov-loop potential ($\mu$PNJL model). With respect to the original PNJL model, the confined-deconfined phase transition is largely affected at low temperature and large chemical potential. Using the two-phase model, we investigate the equilibrium transition between hadronic and quark matter at finite chemical potentials and temperatures. The numerical results show that the transition boundaries from nuclear to quark matter move towards smaller chemical potential (lower density) when the $\mu$-dependent Polyakov loop potential is taken. In particular, for charge asymmetric matter, we compute the local asymmetry of $u, d$ quarks in the hadron-quark coexisting phase, and analyse the isospin-relevant observables possibly measurable in heavy-ion collision (HIC) experiments. In general new HIC data on the location and properties of the mixed phase would bring relevant information on the expected chemical potential dependence of the Polyakov Loop contribution.

Abstract:An elemental composition method for computation and analysis of simultaneous chemical and phase equilibrium (CPE) of non-ideal mixtures is proposed. The concept of element is defined, the relationship between component composition and elemental composition is derived, and the concept of elemental potential and its physical meaning are further cleared from the view point of thermodynamics. The relationship between chemical potential and elemental potential is derived in the thermodynamic principles, and the computation equations for CPE problem are obtained based on elemental potential. A simple form of necessary and sufficient condition in terms of elemental composition for reactive azeotropes is derived, which takes the same functional form as the condition for azeotropes in non-reactive systems. The element in this note may be atoms, molecules or group radicals. The presented method is applicable to CPE problem of non-ideal mixtures, and the computation can be simplified by the dimension reducing method. The presented method was supplied to compute and analyze CPE problem of several examples and it is found that it is a robust and efficient method.

Abstract:Chemical potential is an effective way to drive phase transition or express wettability. In this letter, we present a chemical-potential-based lattice Boltzmann model to simulate multiphase flows. The nonideal force is directly evaluated by a chemical potential. The model theoretically satisfies thermodynamics and Galilean invariance. The computational efficiency is improved owing to avoiding the calculation of pressure tensor. We have derived several chemical potentials of the popular equations of state from the free-energy density function. An effective chemical-potential boundary condition is implemented to investigate the wettability of a solid surface. Remarkably, the numerical results show that the contact angle can be linearly tuned by the surface chemical potential.

Complex phase diagram from simple interactions in a one-component system

Abstract:The pressure-temperature phase diagram of a one-component system, with particles interacting through a spherically symmetric pair potential is studied. It is shown that if the pair potential allows for a discontinuous reduction of the volume of the system when pressure is increased (at zero temperature), then the phase diagram obtained has many ``water like'' characteristics. Among these characteristics the negative thermal expansion and expansion upon freezing in some range of pressure, and the existence of many different crystaline structures are clearly observable in numerical simulations. This implies that complex phase diagrams are not necessarily originated in complex microscopic interactions.

Abstract:The PHASEGO package extracts the Helmholtz free energy from the phonon density of states obtained by the first-principles calculations. With the help of equation of states fitting, it reduces the Gibbs free energy as a function of pressure/temperature at fixed temperature/pressure. Based on the quasi-harmonic approximation (QHA), it calculates the possible phase boundaries among all the structures of interest and finally plots the phase diagram automatically. For the single phase analysis, PHASEGO can numerically derive many properties, such as the thermal expansion coefficients, the bulk moduli, the heat capacities, the thermal pressures, the Hugoniot pressure-volume-temperature relations, the Gruneisen parameters, and the Debye temperatures. In order to check its ability of phase transition analysis, I present here two examples: semiconductor GaN and metallic Fe. In the case of GaN, PHASEGO automatically determined and plotted the phase boundaries among the provided zinc blende (ZB), wurtzite (WZ) and rocksalt (RS) structures. In the case of Fe, the results indicate that at high temperature the electronic thermal excitation free energy corrections considerably alter the phase boundaries among the body-centered cubic (bcc), face-centered cubic (fcc) and hexagonal close-packed (hcp) structures.

Abstract:Using the Deep Potential methodology, we construct a model that reproduces accurately the potential energy surface of the SCAN approximation of density functional theory for water, from low temperature and pressure to about 2400 K and 50 GPa, excluding the vapor stability region. The computational efficiency of the model makes it possible to predict its phase diagram using molecular dynamics. Satisfactory overall agreement with experimental results is obtained. The fluid phases, molecular and ionic, and all the stable ice polymorphs, ordered and disordered, are predicted correctly, with the exception of ice III and XV that are stable in experiments, but metastable in the model. The evolution of the atomic dynamics upon heating, as ice VII transforms first into ice VII$''$ and then into an ionic fluid, reveals that molecular dissociation and breaking of the ice rules coexist with strong covalent fluctuations, explaining why only partial ionization was inferred in experiments.

Abstract:AbstractThe potential‐driven semiconductor‐to‐metal transition is investigated in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides by employing a new proposed method, i.e., the fixed‐potential method (FPM). Under the same voltage, the semiconducting and metallic phases will be charged differently due to their different electronic properties. The potential‐driven phase transition process is simulated by the injection of unequal electrons in the semiconducting and metallic phases. The unequal electron injection is more consistent with the actual experimental process, although equal electron injection also can theoretically induce a phase transition. MoTe2 is chosen as a prototypical example to examine the physical mechanism. When the fixed electrode potential is above the potential of zero‐charge, excess electrons are injected into the metallic 1T’ phase instead of the semiconducting 2H phase, stabilizing the 1T’ phase. In addition, the potential‐dependent kinetics, in which the charge transfer is fluctuating, suggests that increasing the electrode potential will decrease the kinetic barrier of the 2H→1T’ transition process. The calculated relative transition voltage of 2.5 V agrees well with the experimental results, demonstrating the validity of the FPM. This study provides new insight into potential‐driven semiconductor‐to‐metal phase transitions and suggests a new theoretical approach for studies under constant voltage conditions.

Abstract:The pseudo-critical temperature of the confinement-deconfinement transition and the phase transition surface are investigated by using the complex chemical potential. We can interpret the imaginary chemical potential as the Aharonov-Bohm phase, then the analogy of the topological order suggests that the Roberge-Weiss endpoint would define the pseudo-critical temperature. The behavior of the Roberge-Weiss endpoint at small real quark chemical potential is investigated with the perturbative expansion. The expected QCD phase diagram at complex chemical potential is presented.

Abstract:We construct the effective potential for a QCD-like theory using the auxiliary field method. The chiral phase transition exhibited by the model at finite temperature and the quark chemical potential is studied from the viewpoint of the shape change of the potential near the critical point. We further generalize the effective potential so as to have quark number and scalar quark densities as independent variables near the tri-critical point.

Abstract:In this paper, chiral chemical potential [Formula: see text] is introduced to investigate the QCD susceptibilities and chiral phase transition within the Polyakov-loop-extended Nambu–Jona-Lasinio models in the mean-field approximation. We concentrate on the effect of chiral chemical potential on the phase diagram and the QCD susceptibilities. Moreover, it is worth noting that chiral chemical potential has more and more prominent impact on the susceptibilities and the phase diagram with the decrease of temperature based on our results, which coincides with the prediction that the chiral symmetry is dynamically broken in the first-order phase transition region and gets partly restored in the crossover region.

Abstract:Thermodynamic conventions suffer from describing dynamical distinctions, especially when the structural and energetic changes induced by rare events are insignificant. By using the ensemble theory in the trajectory space, we present a statistical approach to address this problem. Rather than spatial particle-particle interaction which dominates thermodynamics, the temporal correlation of events dominates the dynamics. The zeros of dynamic partition function mark phase transitions in the space-time, i.e., dynamic phase transition (DPT), as Yang and Lee formulate traditional phase transitions, and hence determine dynamic phases on both sides of the zeros. Analogous to the role of temperature (pressure) as thermal (mechanical) potential, we interpret the controlling variable of DPT, i.e., dynamic field, as the dynamical potential. These findings offer possibility towards a unified picture of phase and phase transition.

Abstract:Multicomponent phase separation is a routine occurrence in both living and synthetic systems. Thermodynamics provides a straightforward path to determine the phase boundaries that characterize these transitions for systems at equilibrium. The prevalence of phase separation in complex systems outside the confines of equilibrium motivates the need for a genuinely nonequilibrium theory of multicomponent phase coexistence. Here, we develop a mechanical theory for coexistence that casts coexistence criteria into the familiar form of equality of state functions. Our theory generalizes traditional equilibrium notions such as the species chemical potential and thermodynamic pressure to systems out of equilibrium. Crucially, while these notions may not be identifiable for all nonequilibrium systems, we numerically verify their existence for a variety of systems by introducing the phenomenological Multicomponent Active Model B+. Our work establishes an initial framework for understanding multicomponent coexistence that we hope can serve as the basis for a comprehensive theory for high-dimensional nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Abstract:Recent experimental and theoretical results have shown the existence of a liquid-liquid phase transition in isotropic systems, such as biological solutions and colloids, whose interaction can be represented via an effective potential with a repulsive soft-core and an attractive part. We investigate how the phase diagram of a schematic general isotropic system, interacting via a soft-core squared attractive potential, changes by varying the parameters of the potential. It has been shown that this potential has a phase diagram with a liquid-liquid phase transition in addition to the standard gas-liquid phase transition and that, for a short-range soft-core, the phase diagram resulting from molecular dynamics simulations can be interpreted through a modified van der Waals equation. Here we consider the case of soft-core ranges comparable with or larger than the hard-core diameter. Because an analysis using molecular dynamics simulations of such systems or potentials is too time-demanding, we adopt an integral equation approach in the hypernetted-chain approximation. Thus we can estimate how the temperature and density of both critical points depend on the potential's parameters for large soft-core ranges. The present results confirm and extend our previous analysis, showing that this potential has two fluid-fluid critical points that are well separated in temperature and in density only if there is a balance between the attractive and repulsive part of the potential. We find that for large soft-core ranges our results satisfy a simple relation between the potential's parameters.
