Abstract:Exploring low-cost and high-efficiency electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of paramount importance to develop large-scale alkaline water-splitting electrolyzers (AWEs). Cobalt-based materials have been widely studied because of their promising activity and abundance. However, exposing more active sites for cobalt-based electrocatalysts with enhanced activity and durability still remains as a great challenge. Herein, we demonstrate that chlorine intercalated alpha-type cobalt hydroxide can be electrochemically etched to form a highly active OER catalyst, achieving a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) at an OER overpotential of similar to 320 mV. The improvement in the OER activity can be ascribed to the dechlorination induced defective structures and in situ formation of cobalt oxyhydroxide fragments as active sites via anodic polarization. Our findings suggest a novel strategy of electrochemical etching of chlorine containing hydroxide catalysts to obtain defective oxyhydroxides for continuous electrochemical water splitting.

Abstract:The electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction is a crucial means to support the conversion and storage of the sustainable renewable energy. Low-crystallinity can offer short-range structural ordering and high active site density. In this work, an efficient self-supported oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst, cobalt iron layered double hydroxide (LDH) grown on Ti3C2 modified nickel foam (NF) heterostructure anode (CoFe-LDH/Ti3C2/NF) was prepared using electrodeposition. The exceptional electrocatalytic OER performance is ensured by in situ decorating monolayer Ti3C2/NF (s-Ti3C2/NF) with low-crystallinity CoFe nanospheres. By harnessing the low crystallinity, well-chosen composition and reasonable heterostructure, the overpotential of CoFe-LDH/Ti3C2/NF decreases to 246mV at a current density of 10mA·cm-2 in alkaline media. After 3000 cyclic voltammograms cycles, the ignorable increase in overpotential of 14mV suggest the excellent long circular stability. Moreover, an accelerated reaction kinetics is implied by the smaller Tafel slope (28.76mV·dec-1) and higher double-layer specific capacitance (2.33 mF·cm-2), which surpassed the counterparts CoFe-LDH grown on NF (CoFe-LDH/NF) and s-Ti3C2/NF. This work paves a new way to fabricate the low-crystallinity materials for electrocatalysis and energy storage.
Enhanced electrocatalytic performance for oxygen evolution reaction via active interfaces of Co3O4arrays@FeOx/Carbon cloth heterostructure by plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition

Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a necessary procedure in various devices including water splitting and rechargeable metal-air batteries but required a higher potential to improve oxygen evolution efficiency due to its slow reaction kinetics. In order to solve this problem, a heterostructured electrocatalyst (Co3O4@FeOx/CC) is synthesized by deposition of iron oxides (FeOx) on carbon cloth (CC) via plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition (PE-ALD), then growth of the cobalt oxide (Co3O4) nanosheet arrays. The deposition cycle of FeOx on the CC strongly influences the in-situ growth and distribution of Co3O4 nanosheets and electronic conductivity of the electrocatalyst. Owing to the high accessible and electroactive areas and improved electrical conductivity, the free-standing electrode of Co3O4@FeOx/CC with 100 deposition cycles of FeOx exhibits excellent electrocatalytic performance for OER with a low overpotential of 314.0 mV at 10 mA cm−2 and a small Tafel slope of 29.2 mV dec−1 in alkaline solution, which is much better than that of Co3O4/CC (448 mV), and even commercial RuO2 (380 mV). This design and optimization strategy shows a promising way to synthesize ideally designed catalytic architectures for application in energy storage and conversion.

Abstract:Surface self-reconstruction by the electrochemical activation is considered as an effective strategy to increase the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance of transition metal compounds. Herein, uniform Co2(OH)3Cl microspheres are developed and present an activation-enhanced OER performance caused by the etching of lattice Cl- after 500 cyclic voltammetry (CV) cycles. Furthermore, the OER activity of Co2(OH)3Cl can be further enhanced after small amounts of Fe modification (Fe2+ as precursor). Fe doping into Co2(OH)3Cl lattices can make the etching of surface lattice Cl- easier and generate more surface vacancies to absorb oxygen species. Meanwhile, small amounts of Fe modification can result in a moderate surface oxygen adsorption affinity, facilitating the activation of intermediate oxygen species. Consequently, the 10% Fe-Co2(OH)3Cl exhibits a superior OER activity with a lower overpotential of 273 mV at 10 mA cm-2 (after 500 CV cycles) along with an excellent stability as compared with commercial RuO2.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a key process involved in energy and environment‐related technologies. An ideal OER electrocatalyst should show high exposure of active sites and optimal adsorption energies of oxygenated species. However, earth‐abundant transition‐metal‐based OER electrocatalysts still operate with sluggish OER kinetics. Here, a cation‐exchange route is reported to fabricate cobalt‐vanadium‐iron (oxy)hydroxide (CoV‐Fe0.28) nanosheets with tunable binding energies for the oxygenated intermediates. The formation of an amorphous/crystalline heterostructure in the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst boosts the exposure of active sites compared to their crystalline and amorphous counterparts. Furthermore, the synergetic interaction of Co, V, and Fe cations in the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst subtly regulates the local coordination environment and electronic structure, resulting in the optimal thermodynamic barrier for this elementary reaction step. As a result, the CoV‐Fe0.28 catalyst exhibits superior electrocatalytic activity toward the OER. A low overpotential of 215 mV is required to afford a current density of 10 mA cm−2 with a small Tafel slope of 39.1 mV dec−1, which outperforms commercial RuO2 (321 mV and 86.2 mV dec−1, respectively).

Abstract:Abstract Given that the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) faces challenges due to its sluggish kinetics, development of efficient and robust OER catalytic electrodes is critical for reducing the cost of hydrogen production through electrochemical water splitting. In this study, a biphasic CoNi/Zn(Fe,Al,Cr) 2 O 4 coating, characterized by a densely organized stalagmite‐like microarray structure, is deposited on a commercial pure titanium plate, creating an exceptionally effective OER catalytic electrode. The formation of numerous metal/spinel oxide heterogeneous interfaces is demonstrated to enhance its electron transfer ability and conductivity. At high potentials, aluminum leaching and lattice oxygen consumption can facilitate deep surface reconstruction of highly active Fe‐doped CoNiOOH phase inducing electrochemical activation, further optimizing thermodynamic barrier of the fundamental reaction step. Ultimately, this electrode showcases exceptional OER catalytic performance (low overpotential of 248 and 335 mV to deliver the current density of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 ) compared to commercial IrO 2 catalyst (overpotential of ≈310 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ). Moreover, it demonstrates high current stability sustaining a current density of 500 mA cm −2 for 100 h. This work deepens the comprehension of the surface reconstruction process in OER and, more broadly, introduces a new avenue for designing and enhancing the performance of catalytic materials.

Abstract:Cobalt oxohydroxides (CoOOH) is widely recognized as the true active species for Co‐based oxygen evolution reaction. The OER mechanism and controlled synthesis methods of CoOOH are reviewed, and the strategies for enhancing the OER performance of CoOOH are also summarized. Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the bottleneck for electrochemical water splitting due to its sluggish 4‐electron kinetics and high formation energy of O═O bond. Multiple kinds of Co‐based compounds such as oxides, hydroxides, sulfides, phosphides and so on are demonstrated to possess excellent OER activity. However, these materials will partially or fully convert to CoOOH after OER, and therefore CoOOH receive extensive research interests as the true active species for Co‐based OER catalyst in the past decade. Herein, the OER mechanism and synthesis of CoOOH and the strategies are reviewed for enhancing the OER performance of this kind of catalyst. The synthetic methods for CoOOH, including wet‐chemical oxidation method, electrochemical oxidation method, molten‐salt‐assisted synthesis and hydrothermal method will be reviewed and compared. Moreover, the strategies will be summarized for design active CoOOH‐based OER catalysts such as element doping and construction of hybrid catalysts in detail. Finally, an outlook is provided about the remaining challenges and future opportunities in this area.

Abstract:Exploration of high-efficient and structurally stable electrocatalysts for electrocatalytic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at anode by a simple and feasible strategy is remained challenging for achieving hydrogen production with low-energy consumption. Herein, we successfully constructed a tri-phase interfacial structure of CoFe alloy/CoFe oxide/cobalt-doped iron oxide (denoted as CoFe/CoFeOx/Co-Fe3O4) as a high-efficient and low-cost OER electrocatalyst by one-step chemical bath deposition approach. The tri-phase interfacial structure was achieved by controlling the dosage of reductants/oxidants and tuning the proportion of Co/Fe salts. The as-prepared CoFe/CoFeOx/Co-Fe3O4 not only delivered remarkable OER activity, i.e., a low overpotential of 291 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a small Tafel slope of 47.8 mV dec-1, but also exhibited a decent stability for long-term electrolysis. To unveil the catalytic mechanism, two reasonable aspects about adsorption regulation of oxygenate intermediates and interfacial charge transfer at electrode/electrolyte were predictively proposed.

Unraveling the Dynamic Reconstruction of Active Co(IV)‐O Sites on Ultrathin Amorphous Cobalt‐Iron Hydroxide Nanosheets for Efficient Oxygen‐Evolving

Abstract:Corrosion engineered 1‐nm‐thick amorphous cobalt‐iron hydroxide nanosheets in situ grown on NiFe foam for highly efficient oxygen evolution reaction: in situ Raman spectroscopy unraveling the dynamic reconstruction of active Co(IV)‐O sites and DFT calculation underscoring the supporting effect of the NiFe substrate in enhancing the electrode's OER activity. Highly‐efficient and cost‐effective electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) are crucial for advancing sustainable energy technologies. Herein, a novel approach leveraging corrosion engineering is presented to facilitate the in situ growth of amorphous cobalt‐iron hydroxides on nickel‐iron foam (CoFe(OH)x‐m/NFF) within a NaCl‐CoCl2 aqueous solution. By adjusting the concentration of the solution, the compositions can tailored and morphologies of these hydroxides to optimize the OER electrocatalytic performance. Specifically, the CoFe(OH)x‐500/NFF electrode manifests as distinctive 3D flower‐like clusters composed of remarkably thin nanosheets, measuring a mere 1 nm in thickness. By virtue of the amorphous and ultrathin nanosheet structure, the CoFe(OH)x‐500/NFF electrode exhibits superior OER activity, characterized by notably low overpotentials (η100, 274 mV) and an exceptionally small Tafel slope of 40.54 mV dec−1. Moreover, the electrode's performance remains robust, maintaining low overpotentials for 168 h at 100 mA cm−2. In situ Raman spectroscopy indicates that the hydroxides experience surface structural reconstruction and transform into high‐valent CoFeO2 with active Co(IV)‐O sites during the OER. Theoretical calculations underscore the critical role of the NiFe substrate in enhancing the electrode's OER activity by improving electrical conductivity and modifying the adsorption energy of reaction intermediates, thereby reducing the energy barrier for the reaction.

Abstract:Octahedral coordinated trivalent cobalt cations (CoOh3+) in metal oxyhydroxides are highly active catalytic sites for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER), a critical bottleneck for efficient water splitting; however, previous synthetic methods have limited control over these sites. Herein, a scalable electrodeposition method coupled with in situ oxidation to produce amorphous Co–Fe–W trimetallic oxyhydroxides enriched with CoOh3+ is developed. X‐ray absorption, in operando spectroscopic analysis, and computational studies reveal that 72% of the Co atoms are present in CoOh3+ sites. Fe and W synergistically affect the electronic structure of Co and provide a favorable coordination environment. The Co–Fe–W oxyhydroxide exhibits superior OER catalytic performance with an impressive turnover frequency of 1.96 s−1 at an overpotential of 300 mV, a low Tafel slope of 32 mV dec−1, and small activation energy of 53 kJ mol−1 in alkaline electrolyte. The catalyst directly deposited on Ni foams can serve as a robust OER electrode in two‐electrode water electrolyzers; they deliver a current density of 100 mA cm−2 at a small overpotential of 234 mV in alkaline electrolyte with excellent durability under 100 mA cm−2 over 120 h. These catalysts are excellent for practical water splitting applications.

Abstract:It has been extensively researched that oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline conditions involves dynamic surface restructuring. In particular, the development and design of sulfide/oxide pre-catalyst can reasonably adjust the composition and structure after surface reconstruction, which is very important for oxygen evolution reaction. Herein, a simple two-step hydrothermal method was used to achieve in situ S leaching and doping by precipitation-dissolution equilibrium, inducing the composition change and structure reconstruction of CoFe oxides. In addition, the cross-linked nanosheet structure generated in situ widely exposes the active area, and the crystal/amorphous interface accelerates the charge and mass transfer efficiency. The structurally transformed FeOOH and CoOOH showed excellent OER activity, with overpotentials of 299 and 322.2 mV at 50 and 100 mA cm −2 , significantly superior to one-step or uncured catalysts. Low-cost iron based materials combined with simple methods can be easily mass-produced. This provides an opportunity for the effective design of heterogeneous surface reconfigurable electrocatalysts for practical water electrolysis.

Boosted Oxygen Evolution Reactivity via Atomic Iron Doping in Cobalt Carbonate Hydroxide Hydrate

Abstract:Cobalt carbonate hydroxide hydrate (CCHH) has long been functioning merely as a precursor to prepare compound catalysts; however, its intrinsic potential for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is quite limited due to its poor catalytic activity. Herein, a concept has been proposed to solve this issue by doping Fe into CCHH nanowires grown on nickel foam (denoted as Fe-CCHH/NF) for achieving efficient OER catalysis by electrochemical transformation. The obtained Fe-CCHH/NF-30 exhibits OER catalytic performance with an overpotential of only 200 mV versus the reversible hydrogen electrode (vs. RHE) at a current density of 10 mA cm–2 and small Tafel slope of 50 mV dec–1 in 1 M KOH. Moreover, it displays stability for over 130 h at a large current density of 55 mA cm–2, and no activity decline is observed after the 3000 cycle test. The performance of Fe-CCHH/NF-30 renders it one of the most promising OER catalysts. Abstract:Abstract Computational calculations and experimental studies reveal that the CoOOH phase and the intermediate-spin (IS) state are the key factors for realizing efficient Co-based electrocatalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, according to thermodynamics, general cobalt oxide converts to the CoO 2 phase under OER condition, retarding the OER kinetics. Herein, we demonstrate a simple and scalable strategy to fabricate electrodes with maintaining Fe-CoOOH phase and an IS state under the OER. The changes of phase and spin states were uncovered by combining in-situ /operando X-ray based absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Electrochemical reconstruction of chalcogenide treated Co foam affords a highly enlarged active surface that conferred excellent catalytic activity and stability in a large-scale water electrolyzer. Our findings are meaningful in that the calculated results were experimentally verified through the operando analyses. It also proposes a new strategy for electrode fabrication and confirms the importance of real active phases and spin states under a particular reaction condition.

Abstract:Basic cobalt salts with distinct acidic anion Co(OH) x (A) y are efficient electrocatalysts toward the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, plenty of present studies are still in the try-and-wrong stage, while the underlying anion effect remains unclear. Herein, a series of Co(OH) x (A) y (A = F–, Cl–, and CO3 2–) are synthesized via a hydrothermal strategy, and the order of the OER activity is determined to be Co(OH)(CO3)0.5 > Co2(OH)3Cl > Co(OH)F > Co(OH)2. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy studies reveal that these Co(OH) x (A) y materials undergo surface oxidation during the OER process, and the highly active Co(IV) content is the dominant factor in deciding the OER performance. Furthermore, quantitative analysis of anion concentrations in the electrolyte solution reveals that the anion leaching ability in Co(OH) x (A) y directly relates to the Co(IV) content and finally the OER catalytic activity, which is the essence of the anion effect and can be summarized as an “anion leachingmetal oxidation” model. Our work not only provides deep understanding of the anion effect of metal basic salt-based OER catalysts but also profound insights for the activation process of the OER pre-catalysts.

Abstract:Providing the direct experimental evidence for confirming active and stable phase in cobalt-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline medium is crucial to design and fabricate high-performance electrocatalysts. Herein, we report the in situ fabrication of pure cobalt oxyhydroxide (CoOOH) phase with highly porous structures during OER testing process, which exhibits outstanding performance for OER with a low overpotential of 245 mV at 10 mAcm(-2) and retain stable catalytic activity for 250 h with no appreciable decay. Experimental characterizations revealed that the superior catalytic activity of as-formed CoOOH phase mainly arises from the highly porous structures, which endows the electrocatalyst with high specific surface area (similar to 200m(2) g(-1)), numerous accessible channels and abundant active sites. Evidence has been produced showing that the in situ formed pure CoOOH is the active and stable phase in cobalt-based electrocatalysts for OER in alkaline medium. In addition, the synthetic strategy applied here could provide a novel way to fabricate nanoporous structures under mild conditions using electrochemical oxidation method. (c) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for hydrogen production as well as other energy storage technologies. CoFe-layered double hydroxide (CoFe-OH) has been widely considered as one of the most efficient electrocatalysts for OER in basic aqueous solution. However, it still suffers from low activity in neutral electrolyte. This paper describes partially oxidized CoFe-OH (PO-CoFe-OH) with enhanced covalency of M-O bonds and displays enhanced OER performance under mild condition. Mechanism studies reveal the suitably enhanced M-O covalency in PO-CoFe-OH shifts the OER mechanism to lattice oxygen oxidation mechanism and also promotes the rate-limiting deprotonation, providing superior OER performance. It just requires the overpotentials of 186 and 365 mV to drive the current density densities of 1 and 10 mA·cm−2 in 0.1 M KHCO3 aqueous solution (pH = 8.3), respectively. It provides a new process for rational design of efficient catalysts for water oxidation in mild conditions.

Abstract:In article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/aenm.202002464">2002464</a>, Shi Chen, Lei Wang, Guichuan Xing, Hui Pan and co‐workers develop a vanadium‐cobalt‐iron trimetal nitride system with greatly enhanced electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). The metal oxyhydroxide formed in the OER process due to the surface reconstruction and phase transition is the intrinsic active species for the OER. In addition, the promoted oxygen evolution is possibly activated by a peroxo‐like (O22−) species through a combined lattice‐oxygen‐oxidation and adsorbate‐escape mechanism.

Abstract:Transition metal cobalt (oxy)hydroxides are promising catalyst candidates for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Their activity can be significantly enhanced by doping chromium; however, the optimal catalyst elemental composition is unknown, and the exact role of Cr remains elusive. Here, density functional theory (DFT) calculations and comprehensive catalyst characterization are combined to address these two questions. Guided by DFT calculations, a series of amorphous ternary Co‐iron(Fe)‐Cr (oxy)hydroxides with systematically tuned elemental compositions are synthesized. Performance atlases of these catalysts are established based on different experimental descriptors, which show that the optimal Co5Fe3Cr2 (oxy)hydroxide reaches a current density of 10 mA cm−2 at an overpotential of 232 mV. It delivers a Co‐based mass activity of 1486 A g−1 and a high turnover frequency of 0.23 s−1, over two orders higher than monometallic Co (oxy)hydroxide. X‐ray absorption and photoelectron spectroscopies reveal that Cr promotes Co atoms to occupy octahedral sites and modifies the Co electronic structure. Quasi‐operando electron energy loss spectroscopy further experimentally confirm that Cr accelerates the pre‐oxidation of Co2+ to higher valence species, resulting in significantly higher catalytic activity. The findings here pave the way to use Co–Fe–Cr (oxy)hydroxides as an efficient OER catalyst.

Abstract:Identification of active sites for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a key role in the design and fabrication of high-performance cobalt-based electrocatalysts. Herein, we report the synthesis of two types of two-dimensional monometallic cobalt hydroxide nanoplates in aqueous solution for OER: α-Co(OH)2 with both Co2+Td and Co2+Oh sites and β-Co(OH)2 with Co2+Oh sites. Electrochemical characterization reveals that α-Co(OH)2 is more active than β-Co(OH)2 towards OER. The better activity can be attributed to the presence of Co2+Td sites in α-Co(OH)2, which are more active than Co2+Oh sites. Our finding clarifies the contribution of the two catalytic sites and helps future rational design of high-performance OER electrocatalysts.
Engineering Water-Lotus-like Iridium-Cobalt Carbonate Hydroxides on Plasma-Treated Carbon Fibers for Enhanced Electrocatalytic Oxygen Evolution

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline water electrolysis remains a significant challenge for developing high-efficiency electrocatalytic systems. In this study, we present a three-dimensional, micrometer-sized iridium oxide (IrO2)-decorated cobalt carbonate hydroxide (IrO2-P-CoCH) electrocatalyst, which is engineered in situ on a carbon cloth (CC) substrate pretreated with atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma (PCC). The electrocatalyst features petal-like structures composed of nanosized rods, providing abundant reactive areas and sites, including the oxygen vacancy caused by the air-DBD plasma. As a result, the IrO2-P-CoCH/PCC electrocatalyst demonstrates an outstanding OER performance, with overpotentials of only 190 and 300 mV required to achieve current densities of 10 mA cm-2 (j10) and 300 mA cm-2 (j300), respectively, along with a low Tafel slope of 48.1 mV dec-1 in 1.0 M KOH. Remarkably, benefiting from rich active sites exposed on the IrO2-P-CoCH (Ir) heterostructure, the synergistic effect between IrO2 and CoCH enhances the charge delivery rates, and the IrO2-P-CoCH/PCC exhibits a superior electrocatalytic activity at a high current density (300 mV/j300) compared to the commercial benchmarked RuO2/PCC (470 mV/j300). Furthermore, the IrO2-P-CoCH/PCC electrocatalyst shows exceptional OER stability, with a mere 1.3% decrease with a current density of j10 for 100 h testing, surpassing most OER catalysts based on CC substrates. This work introduces a novel approach for designing high-performance OER electrocatalysts on flexible electrode substrates.
