Abstract:Physicochemical properties of aerosol particles were studied at Mt. Lu, an elevated site (115 degrees 59'E, 29 degrees 35'N, 1165 m) within the acid precipitation area. Northeast winds transport copious amounts of air pollutants and water vapor from the Yangtze River Delta into this acid precipitation area. NH4+ and SO42- the dominant ions in PM2.5 and determine aerosol acidity. Individual particle analysis shows abundant S-rich and metals (i.e. Fe-, Zn-, Mn-, and Pb-rich) particles. Unlike aerosol particles in North China and urban areas, there are little soot and mineral particles at Mt. Lu. Lack of mineral particles contributed to the higher acidity in precipitation in the research area. Nano-sized spherical metal particles were observed to be embedded in 37% of S-rich particles. These metal particles were likely originated from heavy industries and fired-power plants. Hygroscopic experiments show that most particles start to deliquesce at 73-76% but organic coating lowers the particle deliquescence relative humidity (DRH) to 63-73%. The DRHs of these aerosol particles are clearly smaller than that of pure ammonium sulfate particles which is 80%. Since RH in ambient air was relatively high, ranging from 65% to 85% during our study period, most particles at our sampling site were in liquid phase. Our results suggest that liquid phase reactions in aerosol particles may contribute to SO2 to sulfuric acid conversion in the acid precipitation area. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The aims of the present study were to determine the pH variation and chemical feature of atmospheric precipitation during the research period. We also investigated the redistribution characteristics of rainfall while passing through the canopy layer, leaf-litter layer and soil layer, successively to quantify the acid rain buffering capacity of these spatial levels in the evergreen broadleaved forest (EBF), deciduous broadleaved forest (DBF) and coniferous forest (CF) in Guangzhou urban area, China. Results showed that the rainfall was typically acidic, and the acid rain type in Guangzhou urban area is converted from sulfuric acid type to mixed type of sulfuric acid and nitric acid. The major ions from the canopy to the forest floor differed within the three forest types. However, the enrichment phenomenon of base cations in soil leachate in EBF and DBF implied that nutrient loss was more serious in the broadleaved forest than in the coniferous forest. Variability of ionic concentration and pH in the vertical sequence of different tree species showed that the net ion concentration variation index has a significant conic relationship with ne pH change rate. We also built an acid rain buffering index, which combines the neutralization and interception effects of vegetation to acid rainfall. The present results indicated that the three forest types in urban Guangzhou all have certain buffering capacity to acid rain, and following the order: DBF > EBF > CF. In the meanwhile, the forest canopy is the biggest acid rain buffer in urban Guangzhou, following by the soil.
Spatial distribution and forecast of acid rain in Zhejiang province

Abstract:Spatial distributions of pH of the average annual precipitations for two periods (1992 and 2002) were first established using monitoring data and interpolations. RAINS-ASIA model was employed for predicting annual SO2 emission and area of higher emission than critical loading of the local ecosystem for cases with and without emission control. The data and simulation results show that the area of acid rain in Zhejiang will continue to expand due to lower pH of the precipitations,that the SO2 emission rates will stay at a relatively high level for a long period of time even with control,and that the area beyond critical loading would go through a phase of rapid growth up to 2000 before leveling off with a notable time delay in the recovery process.
Wet Deposition of Low Molecular Weight Carboxylic Acids in Shenzhen

Abstract:Carboxylic acids possibly made significant contributions to acid rain, especially in Shenzhen,which is located at subtropical zone with strong solar radiation and active photochemical process,favorable to carboxylic acid formation.Rainwater samples were collected at Shenzhen from 2004 to 2005 and analyzed for low molecular weight monocarboxylic acids and dicarboxylic acids.Distributions of carboxylic acids showed a predominance of formic and oxalic acid followed by acetic acids and they were found to comprise over 98% of total carboxylic acids.Carboxylic acids accounted for 7% of total anions and 5% of total free acidity,respectively.The concentrations and contributions to anions and TFA of carboxylic acids in Shenzhen rainwater were higher than in Beijing rainwater.Carboxylic acids made certain contributions to acid rain in Shenzhen.Wet depositions of organic acids were mainly in the summer.This suggests that it is necessary to control emission of organic acids in Shenzhen in the summer.
Analysis on pH and Chemical Composition of Rainfall in Jinyun Mountain, Chongqing, China

Abstract:The pH and chemical composition of 126 precipitation samples collected from April 1998 to November 1999 in Jinyun Mountain, Chongqing, China, were analyzed. Theresults showed that the average pH was 5.23 and the average conductivity was 33.90 μs·cm-1, which implied that the pollution in Jinyun Mountain was better than that in the other acid rain region of southern China and Chongqing urban areas. The concentration of accounted for 84.61%of total anions, and the concentration of and Ca2+accounted for 77.36%of total cations of rainfall inJinyun Mountain. The high concentration of and Ca2+neutralized greatly the acidity of acid ions, resulted in relatively high pH and lower frequency of acidrain, but the acidifying rain might injure the forest ecosystem potentially. The seasonal variations in the rainfall pH and chemical composition were evident, which may be related to the seasonal variations in precipitation amount in Jinyun Mountain. The effects of acid rain on forest ecosystem had time lag, so it wasnecessary to study the dynamic characteristics of acid deposition more carefully and comprehensively.
Characteristics of Acid Rain in the Suburb and Urban Areas of Nanchang During 2006 and 2007

Abstract:Based on the statistical analysis for pH value, occurring frequency, constituents of acid rain, and air pollutants measured during 2006 and 2007 in the protected farmlands, suburb, and urban areas of Nanchang, the characteristics of acid rain in this region were studied. Measurements taken at three sites indicate that the annual mean pH values of acid rain in Nanchang are lower than the criteria of serous acid rain. The occurring frequency of acid rain was in the range from 88% to 97% at three sites. The acidity of rainfall was more serious during the period from September to April than during the period from May to August. The pH value of rainfall is significantly correlated with the con- centration of atmospheric pollutants. Acid rain in this region is typically sulphuric acid, with SO24-, NO3-and Cl-as major anions and NH4+, Ca2+ and K+ as major positive ions. The ratio of SO24- to NO3-is low. Since the protected farmlands are situated to the leeward of urban area and industrial pollution sources, the total ion and SO24- here are high. The seriousness of acid rain in the protected farmlands is compatible to that of acid rain in the urban area. In order to alleviate pollutions in the protected farmlands and urban area of Nanchang, industrial park to be set up and enterprises emigrated out from the urban area should be allocated at locations away from predominant wind directions. The northwest and southeast areas are the potential homes for the pollutant emission sources.
Trends of Precipitation Acidification and Determining Factors in China During 2006–2015

Abstract:Precipitation acidification, often termed as acid rain (pH < 5.6), has been recognized as one of the major environmental issues in China since the 1980s and exerted detrimental effects on terrestrial ecosystems. In this study, we present the first investigation on the evolution of precipitation acidification over China during 2006-2015 based on a long-term nationwide precipitation observation network and chemical transport model (Weather Research and Forest model coupled with Chemistry) simulations. The observations demonstrate a clearly decreasing trend in precipitation acidification across China from 2006 to 2015. The percentages of the number of the stations experiencing heavy acidic precipitation (annual mean pH < 5.0) decrease from similar to 50% in 2006 to 20% in 2015, and those with pH < 4.5 decrease from 25% to less than 5%. Our model simulations reproduced this trend and show the notable decrease in the terrestrial area (from 30% to 16%) experiencing the mean precipitation pH < 5.6. The simulation experiments indicate that the mitigation of the acidification issue in China stemmed from the large reduction in SO2 emissions (by about 60% from 2006 to 2015), which would limit the formation of sulfate and also increase the wet scavenging of gaseous ammonia. The contributions of sulfuric acid on precipitation acidification were estimated to decrease from 0.70-0.82 to 0.44-0.60 from 2006 to 2015 over northern, southern, and southwestern China. This study suggests that nitric acid plays a more important role in acidifying precipitation in northern China at present, while sulfuric acid is still the dominant factor in southern areas.
Characterization of precipitation in the background of atmospheric pollutants reduction in Guilin: Temporal variation and source apportionment

Abstract:Rainfall samples were collected from three observation sites in Guilin from 2013 to 2017, and the chemical composition characteristics of precipitation and the contribution made by different ion sources were analyzed when atmospheric pollutants levels were reduced. The results showed that acid gas emissions and atmospheric pollutant concentrations continued to decline during the study period. However, the change in the volume-weighted mean pH at the three sites suggested that acid rain pollution was not alleviated and began to deteriorate after 2015. The continuing downward trend for alkaline neutralizing ions (Ca2+, NH4+) in precipitation indicated that the reduction in alkaline neutralizing substances in the atmosphere was an important factor that led to the deterioration in acid rain across Guilin. The principal component analysis and spearman correlation analysis indicated five sources of ions in precipitation. Quantitative assessment of these five sources indicated that fossil fuel combustion contributed the most ions concentration in precipitation at the three sites, followed by agriculture, terrestrial (crustal) sources, marine sources, and biomass burning. Long-distance airflow might affect the acidity, the electrical conductivity (EC), and ion concentrations in precipitation across Guilin. The airflow trajectory from the west and southeast directions corresponded to higher acidity and ion concentrations. According to the current air pollution control strategy planned by Guilin, reducing atmospheric coarse particles and NH3 at the same time may potentially lead to further deteriorations in acid rain contents. Therefore, Guilin needs to develop more reasonable pollution prevention measures that synergistically control atmospheric pollutants and acid rain pollution.

Abstract:Acid rain is a major regional-scale environmental problem in China. To control acid rain pollution and to protect the ecological environment, it is urgent to document acid rain patterns in various regions of China. Taking Liaoning Province as the study area, the present work focused on the spatial and temporal variations of acid rains in northeastern China. It presents a means for predicting the occurrence of acid rain using geographic position, terrain characteristics, routinely monitored meteorological factors and column concentrations of atmospheric SO2 and NO2. The analysis applies a decision tree approach to the foregoing observation data. Results showed that: (1) acid rain occurred at 17 stations among the 81 monitoring stations in Liaoning Province, with the frequency of acid rain from 0 to 84.38%; (2) summer had the most acid rain occurrences followed by spring and autumn, and the winter had the least; (3) the total accuracy for the simulation of precipitation pH (pH ≤ 4.5, 4.5 < pH ≤ 5.6, and pH > 5.6) was 98.04% using the decision tree method known as C5. The simulation results also indicated that the distance to coastline, elevation, wind direction, wind speed, rainfall amount, atmospheric pressure, and the precursors of acid rain all have a strong influence on the occurrence of acid rains in northeastern China.

Abstract:Fifty-three rain events throughout the entire year of 2003 were collected in Beijing and the concentration of 15 major ions with the pH of the rainwater were analyzed. The close correlations of the acidity in rainwater with the concentrations of aerosol and gases in the air were observed and elaborated. The scavenging of the pollutants from the air directly affects the pH and composition of the rainwater. The major ions in rainwater in Beijing were SO42−, NO3−, Cl−, NH4+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and F−. The alkaline cations, NH4+ and Ca2+, acted as acid neutralizers and buffered the acidity of rain. The temporal variation of those major pollution ions in rainwater was similar to that of the air pollution. The concentrations of SO42−, NO3−, and NH4+ have increased for the last two decades and likely indicated that the air pollution has become more and more serious in Beijing since the 1980s. The ratio of the concentration of SO42− to NO3− observed in 2003 was much lower than that in 1981, indicating that the air pollution resulting from the traffic emission, NOx, has been more significant. A remarkably positive correlation between pH and Ca2+ concentration illustrates that Ca2+ generally from mineral aerosols plays an important role in buffering rainwater acidity in Beijing and in northern China at all times. The concentrations of SO42− and NO3−, the predominant acid anions in rain, was much higher in Beijing than other cities, suggesting that the anthropogenic air pollution in Beijing has been a much more serious problem than other places.

Abstract:In order to understand the main chemical constituents within precipitations and their spatiotemporal variations in the Three Gorges Reservoir Region,the atmospheric precipitation samples were collected from three stations along the reservoir during 2000 to 2009.pH,conductivity,and ions were analyzed.Average pH values were 5.76,6.03,and 5.52,and average conductivity were 117.3,72.3,and 63.1 μS · cm-1 in Banan,Fuling and Wanzhou,respectively.The rainwater in these districts exhibited a significant acidification trend over the past decade with more serious pollution levels than those in Beijing,Chengdu,Shenzhen,and Hunan.The concentration of SO2-4 accounted for 77% of total anions,while NH+4 and Ca2+ were the major cations.The relatively low mass ratio of NO-3 to SO2-4 in the three stations indicated that the type of rain acidity was still dominantly from sulfuric acid.The ionic constituents of precipitation presented clear spatial-temporal variations,due to seasonal variations in emissions and meteorology,including the rainfall intensity.The ion concentrations were higher in winter and spring and lower in summer and autumn.Precipitation pollution in the three stations exhibited a clearly decreasing trend with distance from downtown Chongqing.

Abstract:The pollutants from anthropogenic activities can affect precipitation composition and subsequently affect aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Here, we reported the results from the simultaneous collection and chemical analysis (including F-, Cl-, NO3-, SO42-, HCOO-, CH3COO-, Na+, NH4+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, pH) of spring rain, mold rain and typhoon rain during 1990 and 1991 in the region of Xiamen, Quanzhou, Zhangzhou and Tongan, which is called 'Minnan Golden Triangle' and is a rapidly growing urban area in the southeastern Coast of China. It was found that the average pHs of spring rain, mold rain and typhoon rain in 1990 in this region were 4.51, 4.93 and 5.14, respectively. Obviously, the spring rain was the most acidic in the three types of rains in this region. The average concentrations of formic and acetic acids in Xiamen mold rain were 5.67 and 2.91 mu eq/l, respectively, and the average maximum contribution of organic acids to free acidity was in the range of 2.8% to 100% (average 66.3%). The regression equations between acidity and ions showed that SO42, NO3-, NH4+ and organic acids (formic and acetic) made the major contribution to the precipitation acidity in this region. The chemical characteristics of different precipitation types in this region indicated that spring rain had the character of continental origin, but the mold rain and typhoon rain had more effects from ocean. Since spring rain, mold rain, and typhoon rain were caused by precipitation cloud approaching to this region from different directions and had different acidity, and the average pH of cloud rainwater on the mountain site was 4.90, it is suggested that acid rain in this region might be mainly caused by long-range transport of pollutants from the southern Chinese mainland, and the local pollution sources were less as significant. Abstract:With the process of urbanization,mankind activities, special ground constructions and changes of atmosphere layers affect the precipitation in related urban regions.Suzhou is a typical city with dense water bodies and with rapid urbanization process in the Yangtze Delta Region.Based on the analysis of Suzhou's urbanization process and annual rainfall time series analysis of Suzhou and Wangting precipitation stations during 1953~2000,by comparing rural precipitation(Wangting precipitation station)with urban precipitation(Suzhou precipitation station) and comparing rainfalls at each station in different periods,the authors analyzed the effect of urbanization on distribution of annual rainfall,precipitation,rainfall frequency etc.In the end,the authors concluded that because of urbanization,annual rainfall,flood season rainfall and maximum daily precipitation have all increased,especially the maximum daily precipitation;distribution of annual rainfall and the frequency of all patterns of rainfall precipitation has increased,especially storm rainfall.
Variation characteristics of acid rain in Zhuzhou, Central China over the period 2011-2020

Abstract:Zhuzhou was one of the most polluted cities in China with the serious acid rain. Due to the implementation of air pollution control measures from 2016 to 2018, the acid rain pollution in this city has reduced. In order to understand the recent situation, a comprehensive study on the acid rain was carried out from January 2011 to December 2020. The pH values during the study period varied from 3.3 to 7.5, with a volume-weighted mean value of 4.7. The predominant acidic components of the precipitation were SO4 2− and NO3 −, accounting for 89.3% of the total anions. The ratio of non-sea-salt SO4 2− to NO3 − showed a decreasing trend, revealing that the pollution type of acid rain changed from sulfuric acid type to sulfuric acid and nitric acid compound type. The correlation analysis (p < 0.05) showed that SO4 2− was positively correlated with NH4 +, Ca2+, and Mg2+; hence, it predominated in precipitation as (NH4)2SO4, NH4HSO4, CaSO4, and MgSO4. Significant positive correlation of Ca2+ with Mg2+ shows that they may originated mainly from crust. Significant positive correlation between SO4 2− and F− and Cl− indicate that their source may be related to the non-ferrous metal smelting industry in Zhuzhou. Further correlation analysis shows that emissions from the non-ferrous metal smelting industry in the area have a large significant on SO4 2− and F− in precipitation, while Cl− may still be emitted from other anthropogenic sources.

Analysis on the Chemical Composition of Precipitation in Hefei

Abstract:To investigate the chemical features of precipitation in Hefei,precipitation samples were collected and analyzed during April to September,2010.The chemical characteristics of rainwater were discussed.The major anions was SO2-4,and the major cations were NH+4 and Ca2+.The ratio of / ranged from 1.23 to 6.33,it was below 3.0 in the most cases,this fact suggested that the acid rain in Hefei belonged to sulfuric and nitric acid mixture.No significant correlation was found between the acidity of precipitation and any single ion concentration.The acidity was decided by multiple ions.Significant correlations were observed between SO2-4 and NO-3,Ca+2 and Mg+2,NH+4 and SO2-4,NH+4 and NO-3.
Analysis on the forest soil acidification status quo in typical acid rain areas of Central and South China.

Abstract:Soil samples from 4 observation stations of Tieshanping (TSP) in Chongqing municipality, Caijiatang(CJT) inHunan province, Liuxihe(LXH) in Guangdong province and Leigongshan(LGS) in Guizhou province were studied. These4 stations were all seriously acidified with the acidification strength of TSPCJTLXHLGS. The cation exchangecapacity (CEC) and the base cation saturation (BS) were all decreased with the soil depth, while the capacity of adsorbentSO42- and the aluminium ion saturation (AlS) were all increased with the soil depth. The BS and AlS of these 4 stationshowed negative correlativity, indicating that Al3+ had stronger displacement ability to the base cation saturation.

Rain-Water Chemical Composition of Frontal Rainfall in Fog-Sector at Dayaoshan of the Nanling Mountains

Abstract:Based on the rain-water data of January 1999, and February and March, 2001, the chemical compositions of rain-water in frontal processes have been analyzed to assess the ion concentrations of rain-water and sources in four typical frontal rainfall processes. The analyses show that the frequency of acid rain reaches 88%, and the harms caused by acid rain should be paid attention. All ion concentrations of fog-water in heavy fog processes are much higher than those in rain-water. Therefore, fogs not only cause bad visibility, but also do harm to people's health due to its highly polluted particles. When fogs occur, the high concentration polluted ion compositions will stimulate mucous membrane of respiratory tract, causing respiratory disease. The chemical features are obviously different between various rainfall processes. The highest negative ion concentration in rain-water is SO 4 2-, followed by Cl -, while the Ca 2+ and NR 4 + are the highest positive ion concentrations. Rain-water is more acid than fog-water, suggesting that there are more cushioning substances in the large ion compositions like NH 4 + and Ca 2+ although ion concentrations of fog-water are much higher than those in rain-water of fog-water. The NH 4 +, Ca 2+, and K + are obviously enriched. The rain-water in the Nanling mountains is mainly influenced by mainland environment and human activities.

Abstract:South China is one of the major regions suffering from acid rain in the world, especially for its urban environments. However, long-term and comprehensive studies on rainwater chemistry in this region have been scarce in the literature. In order to characterize the current acid rain status in South China, a total of 208 rainfall events were collected and measured systematically at an urban site in Shenzhen, a mega-city on the southeast coast of China, from 2005 to 2009. The volume-weighted mean (VWM) pH was observed to be 4.56 during the five years, with an acid rain frequency of 84.6%. SO42− was the most abundant ionic species, followed by Ca2+, NH4+, H+, NO3−, Cl−, Na+, Mg2+, K+ and F− in sequence. Formic, acetic and oxalic acids together contributed 2.32% to the total organic carbon (TOC) content and 2.86% to the total free acidity. SO42−, NO3−, Ca2+, NH4+ and TOC presented a seasonal trend of being lower in summer and higher in winter, while the other species did not show clear seasonal patterns. Based on the dataset, the sources of the species in rainwater in Shenzhen were explored using different statistical techniques, which indicated strong impact of anthropogenic pollution on the rainwater chemistry in this area.
The Contributions of Socioeconomic and Natural Factors to the Acid Deposition over China

Abstract:China has experienced severe acid rain pollution during the past decades due to excessive sulfur oxides (SO2) and nitrous oxides (NOx) emissions, which further caused lake acidification, biodiversity losses and climate change. Although the major sources of acid deposition have been clarified previously, the contributions of socioeconomic (natural) factors to the regional acid deposition remained unknown. Therefore, a series of valuable data including socioeconomic (natural) variables and measured pH value in the rainwater at the city level were collected to identify the key factors influencing the rainwater pH value at the national and the regional scale using the spatial econometric model/geographical detector technique and geographical weight regression (GWR) model, respectively. The results showed that the annual mean pH value in the rainwater in China was 6.54 +/- 0.72. The rainwater pH in winter (6.01 +/- 0.41) was significantly lower than those observed during summer (6.74 +/- 0.64), spring (6.71 +/- 0.71) and autumn (6.71 +/- 0.69). The spatial econometric model indicated that socioeconomic indicators including per capita gross industrial production (GIP), ratio of built-up area to the urban land (RBU), foreign direct investment (FDI), SO2 emission, and meteorological factors of annual mean precipitation (AMP), and annual mean relative humidity (AMRH) were the main factors for the acid deposition. The geographical detector technique implied that the power of determinants were in the order of AMRH (10.00%) = AMP (10.00%) > SO2 emission (8.51%) > FDI (8.32%) > RBU (7.64%) > per capita GIP (7.00%). The GWR implied that GIP, FDI, and SO2 emission made relatively higher contribution to acid deposition in East China relative to other regions owning to the huge population and the higher energy consumption. The higher rainfall amount and RH in Southeast China significantly increased the pollutant deposition fluxes and promoted the heterogeneous transformations of precursors of acid rain, respectively. The findings herein shed light upon the socioeconomic forces for the acid deposition in China for the first time and provided the new information for government sectors to control the acid rain pollution in the future. Abstract:The areas suffering from acid rain in China have extended northwards from the south of Yangtzee River in 1986 to the whole East China at present. The statistical results from the Acid Rain Survey in 82 cities from 1991 to 1995 indicate that the annual average pH value of the precipitation was lower than pH 5.6 in nearly half of these cities or in 87% of the southern cities which are located in the south to the Qingling Mountain and Huaihe River, and the lowest even reached pH 3.52 in Changsha, Hunan province. In addition, the frequency of acid rain was very high (higher than 60%) in one fourth of these cities. Up to date, acid deposition appears quite severe in wide areas southern to the Changjiang (Yangtze) River and eastern to the Qingzang (Tibet) Plateau, covering 12 provinces/autonomous regions, with the formation of four core zones, namely Chongqing-Guiyang area in the southwest, Changsha-Nanchang area in the south, the southeast coastal area and the area near Qingdao in Shandong province.The chemical composition of acid rain in China is generally different from that in Europe, with the lower pH value and the higher sulfate, calcium and ammonium concentration. Another difference is that the concentration of calcium relative to sulfate is very high in China, while the nitrate concentration relative to other components is low. In some cases, the fluoride concentration in precipitation appears also high in China, owing possibly to the combustion of coal with high fluoride content. Besides, the alkaline fly ash and soil dust build the capacity for acid neutralizing during washout.Based on the mineralogy controlling weathering and soil development, sensitivity of ecosystem to acid deposition was assessed with the comprehensive consideration on the effect of temperature, soil texture, land use and precipitation. The results show that the most sensitive area to acid deposition in China is podzolic soil zone in the Northeast, then followed by latosol, dark brown forest soil and black soil zones, the less sensitive area is ferralsol and yellow-brown earth zone in the Southeast, and the least sensitive areas are mainly referred to as xerosol zone in the Northwest, alpine soil zone in the Tibet Plateau, and dark loessial soil and chernozem zone in central China. The reason why the areas in Northeast China are the most sensitive to acid deposition and the ferralsol and yellow-brown earth areas in the south are less can be attributed to the obvious difference in temperature, humidity and soil texture between them.In order to control acid rain and sulfur dioxide pollution, China will designate areas where acid rain or serious SO2 pollution occur or may occur as the Acid Rain Control Areas and the Sulfur Dioxide Pollution Control Areas. Thermal power plants and enterprises within these areas must take measures to abate SO2 emission.
