Abstract:Results from response theory calculations of various hydrocarbon oligomers predict that there is a common localization length, longer than for which the two-photon spectrum is dominated by a single state. The excitation energy of that state varies for the oligomer systems studied in the range of 1.4–1.8 times the optical band gap energy. Strong correlations between the intensity of this maximum two-photon state and the length of the oligomers are found.

Power law dependences of the two-photon absorption intensities with respect to the length of the oligomers have been revealed, and localization lengths at which the intensities are completely dominated by one single state are found. Abstract:One- and two-photon absorption properties of organic chromophores consisting of interacting dipolar branches have been studied using density functional response theory in combination with molecular dynamics simulation. Effects of dipole interaction on optical absorptions have been examined. The importance of solvent effects on optical properties of charge-transfer states is explored by means of polarizable continuum model. It is found that for the interacting dipolar molecule with flexible conformations in solutions, the structural fluctuations can result in new spectral features or significant broadening of one-photon absorption spectrum. Our study highlights again the usefulness of the combined quantum chemical and molecular dynamics approach for modeling two-photon absorption materials in solutions.

Abstract:The electronic and vibronic contributions to the two-photon absorption of a series molecules with multi-branched structures have been studied using ab initio response theory. The results indicate that the electronic coupling between different branches alone cannot explain the experimental finding of a strong enhancement of the two-photon absorption cross section over the single branch structure, whereas it is predicted that vibronic contributions can play an important role in this respect. It is shown that for multi-branched molecules the use of circularly polarized light can increase the two-photon absorption cross section by a factor of 1.5 over linearly polarized light excitation.

Abstract:We present density-functional theory and calculations for two-photon absorption spectra of molecules. The two-photon absorption cross sections are defined in terms of the single residues of the quadratic response function, which was recently derived for density-functional theory using the time-dependent variation principle and the quasi-energy ansatz. The cross-section dependence on different functionals, including the general gradient approximation and hybrid theory, is examined for a set of small molecules. The results of hybrid density-functional theory compare favorably with those from singles-and-doubles coupled-cluster response calculations.

Abstract:We have theoretically examined a series of organic molecules that exhibit large two-photon absorption cross sections in the visible region and that have been synthesized in different laboratories. One- and two-photon absorption cross sections of the four lowest excited states of each molecule have been calculated at the same theoretical level using ab initio response theory. It is found that the molecular length and the one-photon absorption intensity are quite strongly correlated factors, but that a corresponding correlation for the two-photon absorption is much weaker or is missing. In contrast, a most crucial role for large two-photon absorption is played by the π center. For molecules with a given π center a symmetrical structure with strong donor groups can result in a maximum two-photon absorption cross section. Our theoretical findings are consistent with some recent experimental observations. The chromophore based on dithienothiophene as π center attached with symmetrical N,N-diphenylamine donors is found to have the largest two-photon cross section in the visible region among all known one-dimensional two-photon organic materials that have been reported in the literature.

Abstract:We have theoretically examined two series of tetrahedral octupolar molecules that exhibit large two-photon absorption cross-sections in the visible region. The density functional theory B3LYP/6-31G* associated with ZINDO–SOS methods has been used to calculate the molecular geometries, electronic structure, one-photon and two-photon absorption properties. The computational results are in good agreement with the available experimental and theoretical values. It is found that the molecular conjugation length and the one-photon absorption intensity are quite strongly correlated factors, and a corresponding correlation for large two-photon absorption cross-section is equally strong. A most important role for altering the position of one-photon absorption is played by the substitution of the conjugated bridged NN for CHCH. The center with stronger electron-accepting ability is favorable for the efficient increase of two-photon absorption (TPA) cross-section in the higher energy region. While the molecules centered by C atom all exhibit large TPA cross section in a fairly wide range and this property may lead tetrahedral octupolar molecules centered by C atom to more nonlinear optical applications.

Abstract:The correction vector method has been used to investigate structure to property relationships for multiphoton absorption properties in covalently linked porphyrin dimers. The electronic structure of the system is described within the multireference single and double configuration interaction (MRDCI) method coupled with the intermediate neglect of differential overlap (INDO) Hamiltonian. We find a strong increase in the two-photon absorption (2PA) and three-photon absorption (3PA) cross sections when going from an isolated porphyrin to the dimers. The nature of the 2PA and 3PA active states as well as the cross sections show a strong but not straightforward dependence on the length of the bridge between the two porphyrins. Our theoretical results are in very good agreement with experimental data for 2PA. The resulting structure to property relationships are analyzed on the basis of essential-state models, where it turns out that a three-state model considering only the Q(x) intermediate state proposed in literature does not provide a full description of the actual situation.

Abstract:Isomer-dependent two-photon absorption spectra of organic molecules in solutions have been identified by time-dependent density functional theory calculations. Experimentally observed enhancements in two-photon absorptions of V-shaped hydroxypyrimidine derivatives are not due to the formation of molecular dimers but to mainly the co-occurrence of geometrical isomers. Solvent effects on both one- and two-photon absorption spectra have been carefully examined by using a supermolecular approach in combination with a polarizable continuum model. Special attention has been paid to understand the effects of hydrogen bonds on electronic structure and absorption spectra of these chromophores. Our calculated results are very helpful for understanding the corresponding experimental observations.

Abstract:Based on essential-state models for three-photon absorption (3PA), we have investigated the structure-property relationships for stilbene-based dipolar and quadrupolar chromophores. The emphasis lies on the evolution of the 3PA cross section with the degree of ground-state polarization. For dipolar systems, we find a dominant role played by Delta mu, which expresses the change in dipole moment between the ground state and the 3PA active excited state. Thus, the strategies usually applied to maximize the second-order polarizability beta are also applicable to optimize the 3PA cross section. For quadrupolar systems, the 3PA response is dominated by contributions from channels including various low-lying two-photon allowed states, which limits the applicability of essential-state models. Optimization strategies can be proposed but vary for different ranges of ground-state polarization. (c) 2006 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract:The equilibrium geometries, electronic structures, and one- and two-photon absorption properties of a series of paracyclophane derivatives have been determined by using the AMI and ZINDO methods. The results show that the paracyclophane core as a multidimensional tunneling barrier remarkably increases the two-photon absorption cross section of molecules. As far as this series of paracyclophane derivatives is concerned, there exists a nonconventional "through- space" charge transfer. Our theoretical findings are consistent with recent experimental observations. It is found that the molecular length plays the most crucial role in the one-photon absorption intensity and the two-photon absorption cross section. For molecules with a given framework, a symmetrical structure with strong donor groups can result in a maximum two-photon absorption cross section. The three-state approximation is applicable to this series of paracyclophane derivatives. It is notable that paracyclophane-based molecules may afford advantages in the tradeoff of nonlinearity and transparency by generating a strong NLO response while providing a favorable displacement of the region of transparency.
Two-Photon Absorption and Excited State Dynamics of Two Organic Molecules Containing Donor/Acceptor Moieties

Abstract:Two new two-photon absorption (TPA) molecules, named SK-G1 and NT-G1, are synthesized and the photophysical characteristics are investigated by using linear absorption spectra, one-photon fluorescence spectra and two-photon excited fluorescence spectra. Both the compounds exhibit TPA properties, and the TPA values determined by z-scan measurement are 10 GM and 39 GM for SK-G1 and NT-G1, respectively, at wavelength 800 nm. Time-resolved spectroscopic techniques are employed to further explore the excited state dynamics of NT-G1 with larger TPA cross section. The research results show that there is an ultrafast intraband energy transfer process (about 3 ps) before the formation of charge transfer state with a relatively long lifetime.

Abstract:Different theoretical models for the computation of multiphoton absorption response are described and reviewed. The influences of intrinsic molecular structure parameters on the multiphoton absorption properties for organic conjugated molecules are discussed in terms of: i) the donor/acceptor substitutions; ii) the pi conjugation length; iii) the ground-state polarization mimicking structural character such as bond-length alternation; iv) the molecular dimensionality; and, v) some other possible factors, such as vibronic coupling and the solvent, as well as aggregation effects. Some theoretical designing strategies for organic materials with large multiphoton cross-sections are then proposed.
Studies on the Two-Photon Absorption Properties of Trigonal Dehydrobenzo[18]Annulenes

Abstract:The one-photon and two-photon absorption properties of donoracceptor substituted dehydrobenzo[18]annulenes were determined by using density functional theory and ZINDO methods. The macrocycle containing C2v symmetry exhibited the largest TPA cross-section value of 3376 × 1050 cm4 s/photon. The calculated results indicate that the TPA response in the whole molecule comes from the contribution of that in the every side in the trigon. It is notable that the magnitudes of the transition dipole moment from the virtual intermediate state to the TPA final state and the dipole moment difference between the ground state and the virtual intermediate state play important roles in increasing the TPA cross-section value. This series of molecules can circumvent the trade-off between efficiency and transparency, and they provide a promising direction for the further development of novel two-dimensional molecules with such properties.Key words: two-photon absorption, ZINDO, sum-over-states, dehydrobenzo[18] annulenes, transparency.

Abstract:The one-photon absorption (OPA) properties of tetrabenzoporphyrins (TBPs) and phthalocyanines (Pcs) were studied using the semiempirical ZINDO method and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), respectively. The compared results confirmed that the semiempirical ZINDO method was reasonably reliable when calculating the OPA of tetrabenzoporphyrins and phthalocyanines. On the basis of the OPA properties obtained from the ZINDO method, two-photon absorption (TPA) properties of two series of molecules were investigated, using ZINDO and sum-over-states (SOS) methods. The results showed that the TPA cross-sections of all molecules were in the range of 220.6 × 1050 345.9 × 1050 cm4·s·photon1, which were in the same order of magnitude as the values reported in the literature. The relatively larger δ(ω) value for Pcs with respect to that for corresponding TBPs originates from larger intramolecular charge transfer, which can be characterized by the difference of dipole moment between S0 and S1 and the transition dipole moment between S1 and S5.Key words: two-photon absorption, ZINDO, sum-over-states, tetrabenzoporphyrin, phthalocyanines.

Abstract:One- and two-photon absorption properties of a series of fluorene derivatives with symmetrical charge transfer D-IT-D and A-IT-A structural motifs have been theoretically investigated with ZINDO/S method. The optimized structures and the characterization of frontier molecular orbitals were obtained by using AMI calculations. Two-photon absorption properties of molecules have been studied using three-state model. The calculation results have shown that fluorene-thiophene derivatives exhibit larger two-photon absorption cross-section as compared with other studied molecules. To illustrate the results, the crucial effects of thiophene ring on fluorenethiophene derivatives and the net charge changes on the pi-conjugated bridges are analyzed theoretically. Abstract:A necessary first step in the development of technologies such as artificial photosynthesis is understanding the photoexcitation process within the basic building blocks of naturally-occurring light harvesting complexes (LHCs). The most important of these building blocks in biological LHCs such as LHC II from green plants are the chlorophyll $a$ (Chl $a$) and chlorophyll $b$ (Chl $b$) chromophores dispersed throughout the protein matrix. However, efforts to describe such systems are still hampered by the lack of computationally efficient and accurate methods that are able to describe optical absorption in large biomolecules. In this work we employ a highly efficient linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAOs) to represent the Kohn--Sham (KS) wave functions at the density functional theory (DFT) level and perform time dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) in either the reciprocal space and frequency domain (LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$) or real space and time (LCAO-TDDFT-$r$-$t$) calculations of the optical absorption spectra of Chl $a$ and $b$ monomers and dimers. We find our LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$ and LCAO-TDDFT-$r$-$t$ calculations reproduce results obtained with a plane wave (PW) representation of the KS wave functions (PW-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$), but with a significant reduction in computational effort. Moreover, by applying the GLLB-SC derivative discontinuity correction $\Delta_x$ to the KS eigenenergies, with both LCAO-TDDFT-$k$-$\omega$ and LCAO-TDDFT-$r$-$t$ methods we are able to semi-quantitatively reproduce the experimentally measured photoinduced dissociation (PID) results. This work opens the path to first principles calculations of optical excitations in macromolecular systems.
