Abstract:The temperature distribution characteristics in tunnel fire scenarios are not only crucial for evaluating the hot damage of tunnel structure, but also pivotal fundation to study the smoke kinetic characteristics. In the present work, the scaled-model tests and the CFD simulations were adopted to investigate the effects of aspect ratio, longitudinal ventilation velocity and fire heat release rate on smoke temperature decay characteristics at both transverse and longitudinal directions in tunnel fires. Results indicate that: Tunnel aspect ratio has a significant influence on smoke temperature rate at both transverse and longitudinal directions. The increase of aspect ratio will increase the contact area between the smoke layer and the ceiling, enhancing the heat loss of the smoke backflow layer. As a result, smoke temperature decays faster in a wide-shallow cross-section tunnel. The longitudinal temperature decay rate in the wide-shallow tunnel (AR = 9.3) is almost eight times as large as that in the normal tunnel (AR = 1.1). The increase of fire heat release rate will reduce the smoke temperature decay rate at both transverse and longitudinal direction; As the ventilation velocity increases, the longitudinal temperature decay rate increases while the transverse temperature decay rate decreases. The definition of smoke backflow ratio was proposed to establish the fire smoke temperature decay model of the smoke backflow layer, which considers the effects of aspect ratio, longitudinal ventilation velocity and fire heat release rate. By comparing the test results in previous research work, the new model shows relatively good applicability in the full-scaled tunnel and is valid for a wide range of testing conditions.

Abstract:The critical air velocity,i.e.the minimum air velocity required to suppress the smoke spreading against the longitudinal ventilation flow during tunnel fire situations,is a key criterion for the tunnel fire smoke control.Available reports indicated that the critical velocity is preliminarily concerned with the fire power,and the tunnel geometry etc.There may be some difference between the critical velocity in a sloping tunnel and that in a horizontal tunnel,due to effect of slope.In this paper,a series of numerical simulations for the critical air velocities corresponding to the uphill and downhill tunnels with slopes between 0 to 10 degrees are conducted by the CFD software FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator),and the effect of tunnel slope on the critical air velocity are investigated.

Abstract:As a widely used fundamental transportation facility, tunnels always have a specific longitudinal slope, which may significantly affect smoke transportation, but the knowledge of smoke transportation in the sloped tunnel is relatively insufficient. In this work, a series of numerical simulations are performed to explore the influence of longitudinal slope on smoke transportation and temperature distribution in tunnels. The heat release rate ranges from 3 MW to 10 MW, and the tunnel slope varies from 0 % (horizontal tunnel) to 8 %. The outcomes of this work reveal that as tunnel slope and heat release rate rise, due to the growth of the induced air inflow velocity at the lower tunnel entrance, the fire plume and the high-temperature combustion region incline downstream of the tunnel. Consequently, the ceiling smoke needs to propagate a farther distance for approaching the one-dimensional spread stage. Moreover, a correlation to predict the smoke ceiling temperature distribution along the tunnel longitudinal direction is established by selecting the one-dimensional spread stage starting position as the reference point. Finally, for validating the applicability and reliability of the predictive equation, it is compared with the outcomes of previous small-scale and full-scale studies in horizontal and sloped tunnels.

Abstract:To control the harmful releases in a tunnel, a longitudinal ventilation flow has to be imposed. The concept of critical velocity has been the focus of numerous tunnel fire studies, with researches focus on horizontal tunnels and tunnels with inclination have received much less attention. Due to the stack effect, smoke movement in inclined tunnels (with inclination angle θ) is different from that in horizontal tunnels and the critical velocity can be affected. In this study, we tackle the problem of critical velocity theoretically, experimentally and numerically. The theoretical model relies on a top-hat plume impinging on the ceiling, and predicts a dependence, in case of buoyancy-driven releases, of the form Vc/Vc0=1+Cksinθ. Experiments are performed in a reduced scale tunnel, inclined from -5° to +5°, and using light gas mixture (air/helium) to simulate the presence of light smokes. Numerical simulations are performed using FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator) with hot-air plume and propane fire. Experimental results show that the dynamical condition at the source affects the critical velocity: when the buoyant plume is momentum-driven, the influence of slope is small; when the buoyant plume is buoyancy-driven, the influence of slope is large. This feature is conveniently reproduced by the analytical model adopting Ck=2.1. Similar influence of Γi has been observed in the hot-air plume simulation with that in the experiment. Finally, in the numerical simulation of propane fire, results show that the influence of the slope on the ratio Vc/Vc0 is not affected by the heat release rate.

Abstract:This study investigates the smoke flow behaviors in an inclined tunnel under natural ventilation. Numerical simulations are conducted considering different tunnel slopes, heat release rates (HRR), tunnel lengths, and tunnel widths. The focus is on the effects of tunnel slope on smoke propagation, maximum smoke temperature beneath the tunnel ceiling, tunnel inlet air velocity, and smoke back-layering length. The findings indicate that in an inclined tunnel, the dispersion of upstream smoke is influenced by downstream smoke plume propagation. The upstream smoke plume exhibits a reflow towards the fire source after reaching its maximum travel distance, ultimately achieving a quasi-steady state. The maximum smoke temperature beneath the ceiling decreases with increasing slope or decreasing tunnel width, but increases with increasing HRR. The wind speed at the tunnel entrance increases with the increase of slope and HRR, and decreases with the increase of tunnel width. Based on dimensional analysis, using the hydraulic tunnel height as a characteristic length, a simple model is developed to predict the tunnel inlet air velocity, considering the effects of tunnel slope, HRR, tunnel length, and tunnel width. The dimensionless induced airflow velocity is directly proportional to the 0.26 power of the dimensionless heat release rate, the −0.88 power of the dimensionless tunnel width, the 0.47 power of the dimensionless downstream tunnel length and the 0.59 power of the tunnel slope. On this basis, a simplified model for predicting the smoke back-layering length is established using the Richardson number, and its accuracy and feasibility are further validated by comparing with experimental data at different scales.

Abstract:Inclined tunnel fires exhibit unique characteristics compared to horizontal tunnel fires as a result of the stack effect. Nevertheless, there is still a lack of consensus among previous scholars regarding the smoke temperature distribution in inclined tunnel fires. This work conducts a numerical investigation on the smoke back-layering length upstream of the fire source and the temperature decay downstream of the fire source in naturally ventilated inclined tunnels with varying widths and slopes. Results indicate that as the tunnel slope increases from 0° to 8°, the smoke back-layering length first decreases and then continues at a constant value of , while the effect of tunnel width is negligible. The decay factor in the one-dimensional flow stage () exhibits two distinct patterns related to tunnel width: it initially remains constant and then drops when the tunnel is wide, whereas it monotonically drops when the tunnel is narrow. Two empirical models are developed to identify the segmented characteristics and verified through the relevant data from existing literature with similar fire scenarios. This work offers a method for estimating the smoke temperature distribution in inclined tunnels, providing crucial insights for fire prevention, smoke detection, and safety strategies in tunnel engineering.

Abstract:By varying tunnel slope, shaft height and fire source location, a series of numerical simulations were conducted to investigate the smoke back-layering length in a tilted tunnel with a vertical shaft. The simulation results were verified by corresponding reduced-scale experiments. Five possible smoke exhaust modes in tilted tunnels with single shaft were concluded through the flow field analysis. The dimensionless relationships between tunnel slope, shaft height, fire source distance and back-layering length were analyzed. When the fire source is located upstream of the shaft, smoke back-layering occurs when the tunnel slope is less than 1.5%. When the fire source is located downstream of the shaft, smoke back-layering disappears until the tunnel slope is bigger than 2.5%. The dimensionless analysis shows that the back-layering length is related to the fire source location and the tunnel slope, but has no significant dependency on the shaft height. Using the Froude number, the location of hot smoke is identified, when Frc < 1, part of the high-temperature smoke below the shaft cannot enter the shaft but spread to the tunnel exit. Dimensionless correlations between smoke back-laying length and Richardson number (Ri) were proposed. Moreover, the critical conditions that changes the smoke exhaust mode of the tunnel were determined only by the tunnel slope and the shaft height.

Abstract:Critical velocity and smoke back-layering length are two of the determining parameters to the fire risk assessment of subway tunnel. These two parameters of a sloping subway tunnel with train blockage were investigated both experimentally and numerically in this paper. To address the influences of slope, the slopes of 0, 3, 6, 9, 12, 15% in downhill subway tunnel were studied and the height (H) of the tunnel was replaced by the inclined tunnel height (\( H/\cos \theta \)). The train model with a dimension of 2 m (length) × 0.3 m (width) × 0.38 m (height) was also chosen in simulations and experiments for the tunnel blockage. Thenceforward, 30 reduced-scale experimental and 150 numerical scenarios were analyzed to predict the critical velocity and smoke back-layering length in various sloping subway tunnels. Six different heat release rates including 5.58, 11.17, 16.67, 22.35, 27.94, and 33.52 kW were considered in the experiments and five different heat release rates including 2.79, 5.58, 8.38, 11.17 and 16.67 kW were considered in the simulations. Based on the comparison in the horizontal tunnel, numerical results were quite consistent with the experiments. The results showed that train blockage influenced the smoke back-layering length, and the critical velocity increases with the tunnel slope. Finally, empirical models were developed to predict the critical velocity and smoke back-layering length in a sloping subway tunnel with train blockage.

Abstract:When a fire occurs in an inclined tunnel, the tunnel inlet air velocity induced by the stack effect will help to prevent the smoke backflow. This work presents numerical studies on the smoke flow behaviors induced by fires in inclined tunnels under natural ventilation with a vertical shaft. The tunnel slope, heat release rate (HRR) and distance from the fire source to the downhill inlet of tunnel were varied. The effect of tunnel slope on temperature distributions in the shaft and tunnel, smoke back-layering length and tunnel inlet air velocity were specifically focused. Results showed that the maximum ceiling gas temperatures are presented in the downstream of fire axis for all slopes (5%–25%). The plug-holing phenomenon occurs for small slopes and disappears for large slopes. Increasing the slope can help to diminish the plug-holing while it decreases the smoke temperature in the inner region of shaft as well. The established correlation shows that the ratio of the back-layering length to the hydraulic tunnel height (which is defined as the 4 times the tunnel cross-sectional area to the tunnel perimeter) is proportional to −1.57 power of the slope, while it is independent on the HRR and fire source location. The tunnel inlet air velocity increases with increasing the tunnel slope and HRR while it decreases as the fire source placed far away from the downhill inlet of tunnel. Based on dimensional analysis and using the hydraulic tunnel height as the characteristic length, the final equation suggests that the normalized tunnel inlet air velocity is proportional to 0.42 power of the normalized HRR and −0.57 power of the normalized fire source location and it increases exponentially with the tunnel slope.

Abstract:Building Services Engineering Research and Technology, Ahead of Print. The smoke back-layering length is a crucial parameter for evacuating people in both road and subway tunnel fires. This study investigates the fire hazard induced by carriage fire in inclined metro tunnels under natural ventilation. The parameter 'transition slope' is defined to measure the smoke flow from the carriage head in the upstream direction to the tunnel or not due to the stack effect of the tunnel slope. The aim of this paper is to analyse the effects of changes in cross-section, downstream length, tunnel slope, and carriage side-door coupling on smoke behaviour characteristics by experiment and simulation methods. A piecewise function expression between dimensionless smoke back-layering length, downstream length, and tunnel slope for carriage fires in an inclined tunnel under natural ventilation is proposed by theoretical analysis. At the same time, a 1:15 scale model experiment was conducted to initially analyse the characteristics of smoke movement. Following this, full-scale numerical simulations were employed to complement the model experiment and quantify the principles governing smoke movement. The experimental results show that the tunnel slope has a significant effect on the smoke back-layering length. In contrast, the influence of the heat release rate was found to be relatively minor. In addition, simulation results show that the tunnel slope has no significant effect on the smoke back-layering length when the fire location is approximately 20 m from the train head, and the tunnel slope is in the range of 2.29° ∼ 3.43° (4% ∼ 6%). For small tunnel slopes, smoke spreads in the tunnel, and the smoke back-layering length produced by the virtual fire source shows a different law from the previous study model. Finally, the correlation coefficient of the piecewise function in theoretical analysis is fitted by combining the experimental and numerical simulation results.Practical applicationThis study provides valuable insights into the practical implications of controlling and mitigating the impact of fires in inclined metro tunnels. By understanding the critical role of tunnel slope and providing a quantitative tool for smoke spread law assessment, this study contributes to the enhancement of safety measures and the protection of lives in tunnel environments during fire incidents.

Abstract:In the case of fires in inclined immersed tunnels, smoke flow patterns differ from those of horizontal tunnels, and require a unique approach to lateral centralized smoke exhaust. In this study, we propose a prediction model for the exhausted mass flow rate near each vent and use Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) to analyze the flow field and components. Our findings indicate that temperature and smoke velocity distributions follow exponential decay with varying slopes, with exhaust efficiency and entrainment coefficient first increasing then decreasing at 1% and 2% slopes, and continuously decreasing at 3%, 4%, and 5% slopes. Only at a 6% slope can the smoke reach the nearest vent. Exhausted mass flow rate and exhaust volume have a positive correlation, and calculated values and simulated results agree well. This study can guide the design and management of lateral centralized smoke exhaust systems for inclined tunnels.

Abstract:The maximum ceiling temperature and smoke temperature longitudinal distribution are very important for the evaluation of tunnel fire risk. Aiming at the particularities of sloping tunnel structure, the smoke temperature distribution characteristics under different ventilation conditions were studied through the combination of theoretical analysis, small-scale model experiments and numerical simulations. The impact factors of longitudinal airflow velocity caused by stack effect in a sloped tunnel fire were deeply studied, and the induced airflow velocity prediction model has been established. Based on the ideal fire plume model and hydrodynamic equations, the influence of slope effect on the smoke temperature characteristics was deeply studied, a prediction model for the maximum ceiling temperature rise in a sloped tunnel was derived, and a new modified dimensionless longitudinal airflow velocity of the sloped tunnel was proposed as the criterion for the model. In addition, a theoretical model of smoke spread in sloped tunnel was deduced, the empirical model of temperature longitudinal distribution under different ventilation conditions was further established, and the relevant parameters were fitted. By comparing the predicted results of the modified model with the data from numerical simulation and small-scale experiment, it can be found that the fitting results are better.

Abstract:The influences of the slope composition on both sides of the variable slope point and the opening numbers of the exhaust vent on the smoke diffusion and the smoke and heat exhaust efficiency in V-shaped tunnel were investigated by the numerical method. The results showed that for the asymmetric V-shaped tunnel, increasing the number of exhaust vents on the large slope side can improve the smoke and heat exhaust efficiency, but control the smoke in a smaller rang is relatively difficult. The corresponding smoke exhaust vent opening strategy should be drawn up in accordance with the composition of the slope of the V-shaped tunnel and the goal of the smoke control system in practice.

Abstract:Back-layering length and critical velocity are important parameters in longitudinally ventilated tunnel fires. The present study explored the effects of tunnel aspect ratios on smoke back flow by scale model tests and theoretical analyses. Results show that the increase of the tunnel width will enhance the heat transfer between the smoke and the tunnel boundaries and decrease the smoke layer thickness, reducing the back-layering length and critical velocity. New correlations to predict back-layering length and critical velocity with more comprehensive physical significance were proposed by improving the aspect ratio correction coefficient. The prediction results of the model are in good agreement with the experimental data. The new model indicates that under small fire conditions, non-dimensional critical velocity gradually decreases as the aspect ratio increases and eventually approaches a limiting value, which is the critical velocity without sidewall constraints. The determination of the fire scale relies on the aspect ratio when non-dimensional heat release rate Q* is lower than 0.44. In contrast, the fire is always a large one when Q* is larger than 0.44.

Abstract:Underground utility tunnels with various municipal pipelines inside provide convenience for cities and contribute to their sustainable development, but also bring potential fire risks. Previously, the relevant studies have predominately focused on horizontal section, while ignoring the influence of slope at the intersection of utility tunnels. In the present study, the smoke movement and temperature distribution were investigated in utility tunnel fires with five slopes and six heat release rates by numerical simulation. Four different sizes of pool fire experiments were also conducted in a full-scale utility tunnel. The results indicated that: (1) Smoke movement can be divided into five stages, including free rise, diffusion under inclined ceiling, diffusion under horizontal ceiling, flow back, and steady circulation. (2) Temperature upstream is larger than that downstream of the fire source, which is asymmetrically distributed and shows different characteristics with the change in slope. (3) Downstream ceiling temperature decreases gradually with increasing distance from the fire source. An empirical formula is proposed to predict the downstream maximum ceiling temperature rise considering the slope and dimensionless heat release rate. Good agreement was obtained between predicted and experimental values.

Abstract:This paper systematically studied the coupling effect of ambient pressure and tunnel slope on temperature distribution and smoke propagation in full-scale tunnel fires under natural ventilation by FDS. The downstream length (longitudinal length from fire source center to tunnel downstream exit) was also considered. The concept of "height difference of stack effect" was put forward when analyzing the mutual effect of tunnel slope and downstream length on smoke movement. The results show that the maximum smoke temperature beneath the ceiling decreases with the increasing ambient pressure or tunnel slope. The longitudinal smoke temperature decays faster with the decreasing ambient pressure or slope in inclined tunnel. The induced inlet airflow velocity increases with the increasing height difference of stack effect, while decreases with the increasing ambient pressure. And the smoke backlayering length decreases with the increasing height difference of stack effect. Taking heat release rate (HRR), ambient pressure, tunnel slope and downstream length into account, the prediction models of dimensionless induced inlet airflow velocity and smoke backlayering length in inclined tunnel fires at high altitude were developed, which agree well with our and others' results. The outcomes of current study are great meaningful to fire detection and smoke control in inclined tunnel fires at high altitude.
Inclination Effects on Temperature Distribution of Fire Smoke for Highway Tunnel

Abstract:Fire fighting in the highway tunnel has been the main threat to the tunnel operation safety. In the present study, a small-scale tunnel model has been established based on Caihongling Tunnel in Jiangmen at China and 24 sets of small-scaled fire model tests have been carried out with tunnel slope gradient, ventilation velocity and fire power as main factors. The slope takes gradient of 0.0%, 1.5% and 3.0%, respectively, and the ventilation velocity is successively set at 0 m/s, 0.3 m/s, 0.6 m/s and 0.9 m/s. Furthermore, the fire power, based on pool fire, is classified as type A and B. As a result of the error of measurement and the influence of environmental factors, the fire source power for type A is set to 17.2 kW and 22 kW for type B. In view of the tests, the present study investigates the smoke flow and longitudinal distribution of temperature along the highway tunnel, with an aim to analyze the range and direction of smoke flow under different operating conditions and further reveal the law of longitudinal distribution of temperature at different levels. According to the test results, it is hoped that the present study can provide some basis and insight for the tunnel structure, fire protection of equipment and the setting of ventilation velocity and evacuation in the case of fire.

Abstract:Fire smoke is one of the most important factors causing casualties, but also has the potential to bring some harm to the surrounding environment. In this work, the longitudinal temperature profile and the pollutant toxicity of a ceiling jet induced by a wall-attached fire with different tunnel slopes, were numerically and experimentally investigated by using a 1:8 reduced-scale inclined tunnel. The results show that for a given heat release rate (HRR), the flame extension is longer and the temperature decay is slower in ceiling jets induced by a wall-attached fire than for similar free-burning fires, because the air entrainment is restricted by the tunnel side walls. Further, the uphill pollutant toxicity was found to be higher with greater HRR and lower tunnel slope. Finally, a correlation between the non-dimensional longitudinal smoke temperature and CO concentration could be established for the inclined tunnel fire.

Abstract:CFD simulation tests were carried out to study the asymmetric flow phenomenon caused by the combination effect of tunnel slope and longitudinal fire location in a naturally ventilated tunnel. The result shows that the tunnel slope and the longitudinal fire location can both create the induced longitudinal flow solely. The longitudinal flow within tunnel induced by the stack effect caused by the tunnel slope is normally unidirectional, flowing uphill and the speed increases gradually with the tunnel slope. While the longitudinal flow induced by the thermal pressure difference caused by the uneven distribution of upstream and downstream smoke transportation can be bidirectional, which depends on the longitudinal fire location (also known as the downstream and upstream tunnel length difference, ΔL = Ldown − Lup). Therefore, the induced longitudinal flow under the combination effect of tunnel slope and longitudinal fire location is very complex. For tunnels going uphill from left (upstream) to the right (downstream) portals, the two effects are positively added when the fire is located at the upstream tunnel (ΔL > 0), while the two effects are counteracted when the fire is located at the downstream (ΔL < 0). To quantify the strength of asymmetric flow caused by the two effects, an empirical equation of mass flow rate of induced longitudinal flow is proposed. Meanwhile, a model to predict the smoke back-layering length under the two effects is also proposed and validated by former experimental data. A prediction model on the upper critical fire position where the two effects are completely canceled out is proposed. Another critical position (the lower critical fire position) where the smoke flow can achieve unidirectional transportation in an inclined tunnel under natural ventilation conditions is deduced as well.

Energy Sources Part A Recovery Utilization and Environmental Effects

Abstract:When a fire occurs in a large cross-section tunnel with slope, the distribution characteristic of ceiling smoke temperature illustrates special laws under the effect of chimney effect, the thermal radiation feedback, and the air entrance limit from walls. A series of numerical simulations are conducted through FDS simulation software based on the actual size of highway tunnel. The influence of large cross-section tunnel width and slope on ceiling smoke temperature when fire occurs are discussed. The research results show that (1) as the tunnel slope increases from 5° to 20°, the distance between the maximum ceiling smoke temperature point and the fire source is 0.5 m, 1 m, 1.7 m, 2.4 m, respectively, and the distance between the ceiling impact point and the fire source is 1 m, 1.8 m, 2.3 m, 3 m, respectively. As the tunnel width increases from 10 m to 20 m, the distance between maximum ceiling smoke temperature point and fire source increases 0.9 m, 1.1 m, 1.3 m, 1.8 m, 2.5 m, and 2.6 m. (2) The prediction formula of maximum ceiling smoke temperature is modified, and a dimensionless relationship among the maximum ceiling smoke temperature and tunnel slope and tunnel width is established. (3) The formula of longitudinal ceiling smoke temperature distribution is modified, and the relationship among tunnel slope, tunnel width, tunnel height, and longitudinal ceiling smoke temperature distribution is established. The research conclusions can provide a theoretical basis for fire prevention design, smoke control and evacuation of this kind of large cross-section tunnel fire.
