Abstract:Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Beijing 100081) Outdoors cage studies were conducted during 1991 1993 in Beijing to determine k ey factors influencing the overwintering survival rate of the predacious bug, Orius sauteri. It was found that the predator overwintered as either mated or unmated female adults in the soil. Neither male adults nor nymphs overwinter. Th e overwintering survival rate was found to be affected most significantly by the soil moisture content. Under natural soil moisture levels, the survival rate w as averaged 7.74% when checked in March of the following year. When the soil moi sture was kept at 4%, 12% and 20%, the survival rate became higher as the soil m oisture content increased, with the highest rate obtained in the experiment as 8 1.11% under 20% soil moisture. The overwintered adults were moved to a refrigera tor of 7℃ in March when the air temperature began to increase. After two months of storage, the survival rate of the adults was 55% in May, while no survivor o f the overwintered adults could be found under matural conditions. Applications o f these results to the conservation and inoculative augmentation programs for O.sauteri are discussed.
