Abstract:Under the pump of a diode laser at 790 nm, self-pulsing phenomena of ~2 μm Tm3+-doped fiber lasers are investigated. Laser cavity configuration is changed by using different output-coupling mirrors. When the polished fiber-end (Fresnel reflection) is used as the output coupler, the cavity is dubbed as "bad" cavity. With this "bad" cavity, regular laser pulse trains can be obtained near threshold pump level. The pulse width and repetition rate are several micro seconds and several kilohertz, respectively. At higher pump levels, the regular pulse-train shape is broken, and some random pulses occur. At the same time, similar mode-locking phenomenon can be observed. When the output coupler is changed to a T=10% (at 2μm) mirror, regular laser pulse train still can be observed near threshold pump. However, a slight increase of pump leads to randomization of the pulse train. Similar mode-locking phenomenon was not observed with this kind of cavity. When the output coupling is decreased to T=5%, even near the pump threshold, regular pulse train can not be achieved. With increased pump powers, laser output changes from pulse state to continuous wave. Based on the experimental results, a theoretical model is proposed and the origin of self-pulsing is discussed.
Effects of Excited-State Absorption on Self-Pulsing in Tm 3+ -Doped Fiber Lasers

Abstract:Based on theoretical analysis and numerical simulation, the mechanism of self-pulsing operation of 2-μm Tm3+-doped fiber lasers is explored. A simplified rate-equation model is proposed to analyze stable operation of Tm3+-doped fiber lasers. It is shown that the continuous-wave (CW) solution does not exist for certain pump intensities when excited-state absorption (ESA) is included. In numerical simulation, four energy-transfer processes are calculated to identify the origin of self-pulsing in Tm3+-doped fiber lasers. The phonon-assisted ESA process 3H5→3H4 is identified as the key factor for self-pulsing in Tm3+-doped fiber lasers, which confirms the absence of a CW solution in the theoretical analysis. The numerical simulation gives out a regular pulse train, whose characteristics are in excellent agreement with the experimental results. The impacts of ESA cross section and pump intensity on the self-pulsing characteristics are also investigated.

Abstract:In this paper, a theoretical model, taking into account the phonon-assisted excited-state absorption process (H-3(5) -> H-3(4)), has been constructed to explain the self-pulsing (SP) phenomenon in the Tm3+-doped fiber lasers. Both numerical simulation and experimental investigation on the SP characteristics of similar to 2-mu m Tm3+-doped fiber lasers have been carried out. The numerical simulation shows agreement with the experimental results. Furthermore, the impacts of output coupling, pump intensity, and Tm3+-ion doping concentration on the SP characteristics of the Tm3+-doped fiber lasers have been studied explicitly, and optimization of the SP features has been discussed. In addition, the potential applications of SP in fiber lasers or solid-state lasers have also been proposed.

Abstract:Influence of fiber length on the self-pulsing (SP) characteristics of 2 mu m Tm3+-doped silica fiber lasers are investigated experimentally and theoretically. In SP operation, the laser pulse width narrows and the repetition rate increases with the decrease of fiber length. By shortening the fiber length to 2m and angle-polishing the output fiber-end facet, SP pulse width less than 100 ns is achieved, comparable to that from conventional actively Q-switched Tm3+ fiber lasers. Theoretically simulated SP characteristics of the 2 mu m Tm3+-doped fiber laser show good agreement with the experimental results. Further narrowing the pulse width in SP fiber lasers and their potential applications are also discussed. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Compared with the solid laser,the length of gain fiber is approximately considered as the cavity length in fi-ber laser. The traditional rate equation model only considers the relationships of laser parameters and time variation. It doesn’t consider the parameter variations along the axial orientation,which lead to analyzing error of laser output characteristics in theory. The traveling wave equations of in-band pumped gain-switched Tm3+-doped fiber laser are built,and the variations of cavity photon density,upper level population density,and pump power along the fiber axial orientation are investigated. The pulse extractable energy in different repetition rate and fiber core diameter is ana-lyzed. With 1 00ns pulse width and 1 5 μJ pulse energy,the multi-pulse oscillation phenomenon is observed when the repetition frequency is increased to 5MHz. All fiber gain-switched Tm3+-doped fiber laser pumped by 1 558 nm fiber amplifier is realized,and the experimental results are in good agreement with theoretically prediction data.
Pulsing mechanism based on power adiabatic evolution of pump in Tm-doped fiber laser

Abstract:We prove an alternative pulsing mechanism based on power adiabatic evolution of pump in Tm-doped fiber laser. A pulsed laser technique, unlike Q-switching and gain-switching, is explored under the equilibrium between the stimulated emission and absorption. After the laser reaching a CW steady state, the temporal fluctuation of pump power is called power adiabatic evolution if it does not break the balance between the stimulated emission and the absorption. Under the pump power adiabatic evolution the population densities in the upper and lower laser levels get clamped to their steady-state values, and the temporal shape of output laser is identical with that of pump. Based on the power adiabatic evolution of pump a laser pulse can therefore be generated by a pulsed pump which is added to a CW pump. Moreover, the temporal profile, duration and peak power of the laser pulse can all be precisely controlled. Power adiabatic evolution of pump can be achieved in the three pumping shemes of Tm-doped fiber laser, provided that the duration of pump pulse is broader than a certain value. The study on the pulsing mechanism highlights an alternative pulsed technique possessing several advantages over Q-switching and gain-switching.

Abstract:Resonantly pumped by a 1.914-mu m Q-switched Tm:YLF laser, high-peak-power stable laser pulse from gain-switched similar to 1.94-mu m Tm3+-doped silica fiber lasers are reported for the first time. The slope efficiency was over 80% with respect to absorbed pump power, and chaotic spiking was effectively eliminated by using fast gain switching. With a 4-m Tm3+ fiber, pulse energy of 1.3 mJ and pulsewidth of 61 ns were obtained, corresponding to peak power of 21.3 kW.
High Power Tunable Tm-fiber Lasers and Its Application in Pumping Cr:ZnSe Lasers

Abstract:1.1 Research background Interest in the Tm3+-doped fiber laser originates from its emission band in the range of 14002700nm lying between the bands of Er3+ and Nd3+ ions. Since the advent of double-cladding configuration of fiber and the recent technological development of high-power laser diodes, output power (performance) of Tm3+-doped fiber lasers has scaled exponentially. Up to date, the maximum output achieved in Tm3+-doped fiber lasers has been comparable with that from Yb3+-doped fiber lasers. Laser beam in the 2~3┤m wavelength range has wide applications. First, it is a good candidate in laser microsurgery due to high absorption of water in this spectral region thus can provide high-quality laser tissue cutting and welding. In addition, this wavelength-range laser has potential applications in environment monitoring, LIDAR, optical-parametric-oscillation (OPO) pump sources, and so on [1-4]. For obtaining laser emission in the mid-infrared wavelength region, the Tm3+-doped fiber is an excellent candidate due to several unique advantages it possesses. First, the Tm3+-doped fiber has a strong absorption spectrum that has good overlap with the emission band of commercially available AlGaAs laser diodes, which have been significantly developed and are being developed with an unprecedented speed. Second, the specific energy-level structure of Tm3+ ions provides the Tm3+-doped fiber laser a special advantageous energytransfer process-the 3H4+3H6→3F4+3F4 cross relaxation process. In this process, two excitedstate ions can be obtained with depletion of just one absorbed pump photon. With an appropriately high doping level, the cross relaxation process can offer a quantum efficiency close to two, which greatly improves the efficiency of the Tm3+-doped fiber laser. Thirdly, the Tm3+-doped fiber has a very broad emission band, spanning over more than 400 nm. This feature offers the Tm3+-doped fiber laser an especially high-degree wavelength tunability, which is very useful in applications such as spectroscopy, atmospheric sensing and so on.

Abstract:The incorporation of a material-based or artificial saturable absorber into a fiber laser cavity imposes a limitation on energy enhancement owing to its low damage threshold and high environmental sensitivity. To address this issue, one promising alternative approach is the utilization of the self-mode-locking technique. Here, we present a robust self-mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser with high pulse energy emission. A simple and compact fiber laser structure is realized by utilizing a section of a Tm-doped fiber, serving both as a gain medium and a saturable absorber. Thus, the operational stability is enhanced, especially under high-energy conditions. Furthermore, the realization of high-energy pulses is accomplished through the integration of dispersion management technique. Experimental results reveal that the maximum single-pulse energy increases from 34.8 pJ to 120.2 nJ as the round-trip group delay dispersion decreases from −0.43 to −12.40 ps2. The proposed self-mode-locked Tm-doped fiber laser under high-energy operation exhibits remarkable performance. Our results provide a simple approach to obtaining a mid-infrared laser source with high pulse energy and hold significant potential for advancing high-energy laser systems.

Abstract:Tm3+-doped fiber is very suitable for producing ~2-μm laser emission due to its several unique advantages. First, Tm3+-doped fiber has a strong absorption spectrum that has good overlap with the emission spectrum of commercially available AlGaAs laser diodes. Second, the specific energy-level structure of Tm3+ ions provides the Tm3+-doped fiber laser (TDFL) quantum efficiency close to two through the cross relaxation (CR) process. Thirdly, the Tm3+-doped fiber has a very broad emission band (~400 nm), offering great wavelength tunability for the fiber laser.

Abstract:In the Tm3+ doped YAG crystal, the Tm3+ ions are excited into the H-3(4) state from H-3(6) state by absorbing pump radiation at similar to 785 nm, and the ions then relax down to the upper lasing level F-3(4). The laser radiation takes place between the lower Stark level of 3F4 and the higher Stark level of H-3(6). The considerable phonon broadening and high multiplicity of the Stark levels of the 4f electron provides tunability from 1.87 to 2.16 mu m. We presented an analysis for the performance of side pumped quasi-three-level laser oscillators. Taking into account reabsorption loss, we present a theoretical model studies of quasi-three-level laser with particular attention given to the Tm:YAG laser. Equation for Tm: YAG quasi three-level laser system is founded, and a formula of the threshold pump power of the laser is described. The threshold pump power with different emission wavelengths versus the transmission of the output coupler is discussed, and we also analysis the influence on the threshold pump power with different emission wavelengths affected by the crystal length. With the same pump power, a lower transmission of the output coupler would result in a higher intracavity intensity. As a result, the lower laser sub-level within H-3(6) ground state manifold has higher reabsorption loss and therefore, the higher Stark sub-level within H-3(6) ground state manifold has a lower laser threshold and longer laser wavelength.

Abstract:The theoretically determined slope efficiency and threshold pump power for continuous wave (CW) operation of a Tm-doped silica fiber laser are presented. The associated rate equations are solved using standard techniques and, in conjunction with the published and our measured spectroscopic parameters as input, the model was used to examine the fiber laser output for a variety of fiber and pump configurations. After good agreement was achieved between the model calculations and the published experimental measurements, the model was used to examine the relative performance of the fiber laser when the pump wavelength was varied over the /sup 3/F/sub 4/, /sup 3/H/sub 5/, and /sup 3/H/sub 4/ absorption bands of Tm/sup 3+/. The calculated maximum slope efficiencies were determined to be /spl sim/40, /spl sim/57, and /spl sim/84%, respectively, for each of the /sup 3/F/sub 4/, /sup 3/H/sub 5/, and /sup 3/H/sub 4/ absorption band pump schemes and the threshold pump power over the range of pump schemes was determined to vary by only 28%. The model was further used to analyze the fiber laser output when the fiber length, Tm/sup 3+/ concentration and /sup 3/H/sub 4/ energy level lifetime were varied and the consequences on the operation of the fiber laser with these variations are discussed.

Abstract:We report a novel passively Q-switched 2 μm Tm(3+) fiber laser simply by distributed stimulated Brillouin scattering with an all-fiber configuration. The maximum output power is 2.49 W with an optical-to-optical slope efficiency of 12%, and the laser wavelength is centered at ~1991 nm with a spectral width of >10 nm. The single pulse energy can be over 50 μJ with a pulse width of about 20 ns, and the pulse repetition rate can be tuned from several kilohertz to tens of kilohertz by changing the pump power. To the best of our knowledge, this is the highest-average-power passively Q-switched 2 μm Tm(3+) fiber laser in the nanosecond regime.

Abstract:Gain-switched by a 1.914-µm Tm:YLF crystal laser, a two-stage Tm(3+) fiber laser has been achieved 100-W level ~2-µm pulsed laser output with a slope efficiency of ~52%. With the 6-m length of Tm fiber, the laser wavelength was centered at 2020 nm with a bandwidth of ~25 nm. Based on an acousto-optic switch, the pulse repetition rate can be modulated from 500 Hz to 50 kHz, and the laser pulse width can be tuned between 75 ns and ~1 µs. The maximum pulse energy was over 10 mJ, and the maximum pulse peak power was 138 kW. By using the fiber-coiling-induced mode-filtering effect, laser beam quality of M2 = 1.01 was obtained. Further scaling the pulse energy and average power from such kind of gain-switched fiber lasers was also discussed.

Abstract:We describe fundamental measurements of the properties of thulium (Tm)-doped silica and power scaling studies of fiber lasers based on the material. Data on the high-lying Tm:silica energy levels, the first taken to our knowledge, indicate that pumping at 790 nm is unlikely to lead to fiber darkening via multiphoton excitation. Measurement of the cross-relaxation dynamics produces an estimate that, at the doping levels used, as much as 80% of the decay of the Tm level pumped is due to cross relaxation. Using a fiber having a 25-$\mu$m-diameter, 0.08 numerical aperture (NA) core, we observed fiber laser efficiencies as high as 64.5% and output powers of 300 W (around 2040 nm) for 500 W of launched pump power, with a nearly diffraction-limited beam. At these efficiencies, the cross-relaxation process was producing 1.8 laser photons per pump photon. We generated 885 W from a multimode laser using a 35-$\mu$m, 0.2-NA core fiber and set a new record for Tm-doped fiber laser continuous-wave power.

Abstract:High-power operation of diode-pumped fiber lasers at wavelength near 2 pm are demonstrated with short length of heavily Tm3+-doped silica glass fibers. With 7-cm long fiber, a laser at near 2 mu m is obtained with the threshold of 135 mW, maximum output power of 1.09 W, and slope efficiency of 9.6% with respect to the launched power from a laser diode at 790 nm. The output stability of this fiber laser is within 5%. The dependence of the performance of fiber lasers on the operation temperature and cavity configuration parameters is also investigated.

Abstract:As a pump source,1565nm pumping band can efficiently diminish the loss of manifold fast non-radiative decay and upconversion losses compared to 800nm and 1180nm bands.Theoretical model of Tm3+∶Ho3+ co-doped silica fiber for 2μm laser pumped at 1565nm laser is established.After the comprehensive rate equations and propagation equations are given,characteristics of the system in steady state at hypothesis situation are analyzed by using numerical simulation way.As high as 1.7W laser output power was achieved with a slope efficiency of 67% and quantum efficiency of 57% when the pump power is 3W and fiber length is 2.2m.Numerical simulation results indicate better capability of the fiber and higher conversion efficiency as far as we know.

Abstract:We present a theoretical and experimental analysis of a diode-pumped single frequency Tm,Ho:YLF laser. A new model for a diode-pumped Tm,Ho:YLF quasi-three-level laser is described. The influence of energy-transfer up-conversion (ETU) and ground-state re-absorption (GSA) has been taken into account. When the incident pump power is 2.8W, a maximum single frequency output power of 118mW is obtained from the Tm,Ho:YLF laser at room temperature. The line narrowing elements used are two solid etalons. The single frequency laser can be used as a seed laser for either a larger oscillator or an amplifier. The theoretical results are in good agreement with experimental data.
