Abstract:of benazepril and hydrochlorothiazide in the treatment of essential hypertension as comparedwith the fixed combination of irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide. Methods: An 8-week, randomized, open, parallel study design was used. 53 cases of essential hypertension were taken into the study, three patients withdrew because of adverse experiences. Patients received benazepril and hydrochlorothiazide (10 mg/12.5 mg), patients received irbesartan andhydrochlorothiazide (150mg/12.5mg), once daily for 8weeks.Results: The fixed combination of benazepril and hydrochlorothiazide produced statistically significant reductions from baseline in sitting diastolic and systolic blood pressures at the study end point as well as the combination of irbesartan and hydrochlorothiazide (P=0.001). There were no differences in antihypertensive efficacy between the two drugs (P>0.05). All therapies were generally well tolerated. Conclusion: The fixed combination of benazepril and hydrochlorothiazide is effective and safe in reducing sittingdiastolic and systolic blood pressure in patients with hypertension as well as the fixed combination of irbesartan and hydrochlorothide. There were no significant differences in antihypertensive efficacy and safety between the two drugs.
