Abstract:Airborne laser bathymetry (ALB) is employed to measure shallow depth water by using a high sampling rate and point density. Thus, the problems of using traditional detection methods in inaccessible areas can be avoided. This study focuses on practical solutions for receiving echo signals, identifying target echoes, and integrating land and underwater terrain point cloud data in coastal environments. Optimization of the system design and its data processing scheme is undertaken to improve the performance of the receiving system based on a single-band ALB system developed by the authors at Shenzhen University. A flight experiment over eastern Hainan Island was conducted, during which the effectiveness of the proposed strategy was verified. Finally, the technical characteristics of the self-developed system are summarized to provide a reliable reference source for the subsequent industrialization and production of related marine light detection and ranging (LiDAR) laser systems.

Abstract:Airborne LiDAR bathymetry (ALB) has shown great potential in shallow water and coastal mapping. However, due to the variability of the waveforms, it is hard to detect the signals from the received waveforms with a single algorithm. This study proposed a depth-adaptive waveform decomposition method to fit the waveforms of different depths with different models. In the proposed method, waveforms are divided into two categories based on the water depth, labeled as "shallow water (SW)" and "deep water (DW)". An empirical waveform model (EW) based on the calibration waveform is constructed for SW waveform decomposition which is more suitable than classical models, and an exponential function with second-order polynomial model (EFSP) is proposed for DW waveform decomposition which performs better than the quadrilateral model. In solving the model's parameters, a trust region algorithm is introduced to improve the probability of convergence. The proposed method is tested on two field datasets and two simulated datasets to assess the accuracy of the water surface detected in the shallow water and water bottom detected in the deep water. The experimental results show that, compared with the traditional methods, the proposed method performs best, with a high signal detection rate (99.11% in shallow water and 74.64% in deep water), low RMSE (0.09 m for water surface and 0.11 m for water bottom) and wide bathymetric range (0.22 m to 40.49 m).

Abstract:With about 2 years' work, the Instituted of Acoustic, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IACAS) and the Teledyne RD Technology (Shanghai) Inc. (RDT) have developed the Shallow water High Resolution Bathymetric Side Scan Sonar (SBSSS). It is mainly composed of sonar deck control unit, sonar housing (include electronic unit and watertight pod) and two sonar arrays. The SBSSS can obtain the incidence angle of the backscatter from the water bottom on sonar array, directly. Using this system, the grazing angle, distance and signal intensity (acoustic intensity) of the target on the water bottom or in the water can be measured. Working with motion sensor, CTD sensor and GPS (or RTK) system, the SBSSS can get the high resolution terrain and geomorphy of the water bottom, synchronously. After post-processing, the contour map and side scanning map, which is better than the normal side scanning map, can be obtained. The SBSSS also can be used to detect the target on the water bottom or in the water.The technique of sea bottom automatic detect and estimation direction of arrival (DOA) based on multi-subarray subspace fitting (SBAD-EDMSF) is researched and progressed. It can improve the accuracy of depth measurement. Some other theory about the SBSSS, such as estimation technique about the number of signal sources, signal copy technique, attitude correct technique, real time signal processing technique and etc., is studied. Using these methods, the sonar can get better result in the complex acoustic field in the shallow water. So the theory info about the SBSSS is found. It is used to design the sonar and processing the sonar data. The good results are obtained.The maximum working depth of this system is 300 meters. The maximum working range for the depth is 12 times water depth, and for the side scan is 400 meters per side. The cross track resolution is 5 cm, and the minimum detect height is 10 cm.The lake test at Qiandao Lake, P. R. China and the ultra shallow water sea test (5 to 10 meters) in Qingdao, P. R. China are implemented. A water area of 2000mx800m is surveyed. The contour map and the side scan map are obtained. Using the SBSSS, a 30 cm diameter buoyant plastic sphere is detected. After the post processing for the survey data, the measurement accuracy of depth is basically corresponded with the special order standard of IHO.The SBSSS also can be mounted on the automatic underwater vehicle (AUV), remote operated vehicle (ROV), towed body and other underwater vehicles. It can be used to measure the small target, the terrain and the geomorphy of the sea bottom.This paper makes a brief introduce of the system structure, the theory info, the lake test results and the sea test results of the SBSSS.
Airborne LiDAR: state-of-the-art of system design, technology and application

Abstract:In the last two decades, airborne LiDAR, as an active remote sensing technique, has emerged as one of the most effective and reliable means of 3D point clouds collection. This paper presents a survey of the literature related to these techniques, emphasizing state-of-art trends in system design as well as data processing techniques and their impact on various applications. With the challenging requirements of airborne surveying and mapping, the novel LiDAR system design appears to improve data collection ability and derived product resolution/accuracy. Based on a full range of spectral, spatial and temporal properties of the data obtained, recently proposed methods and techniques are presented here to instigate further possibilities for land and urban topography, forest and bathymetric surveying. The conclusion discusses possible developments for more advanced high performance airborne LiDAR systems, allowing spectral detection and geometrical extraction for improved understanding of urban infrastructure planning and natural resource management.

Abstract:Acquisition, tracking, and pointing (ATP) is a key technology in free space laser communication that has a characteristically high precision. In this paper, we report the acquisition and tracking of low-Earth-orbit satellites using shipborne ATP and verify the feasibility of establishing optical links between laser communication satellites and ships in the future. In particular, we developed a shipborne ATP system for satellite-to-sea applications in laser communications. We also designed an acquisition strategy for satellite-to-sea laser communication. In addition, a method was proposed for improving shipborne ATP pointing error. We tracked some stars at sea, achieving a pointing accuracy of less than 180μrad.We then acquired and tracked some low-Earth-orbit satellites at sea, achieving a tracking accuracy of about 20μrad. The results achieved in this work experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of ATP in satellite-to-sea laser communications.

Abstract:The research and protection of the ocean ecosystem are key works to maintain the marine status and develop marine functions. However, human’s knowledge about the ocean is greatly limited. Now, in situ, acoustic and remote sensing methods have been applied in the research to understand and explore the ocean. Especially, the lidar is one outstanding remote sensing method for its high spatial and temporal resolution as well as the ability of the vertical detection. Highspectral- resolution lidar (HSRL) employs an ultra-narrow spectral filter to distinguish scattering signals between particles and water molecules without assuming a lidar ratio and obtains optical properties of the ocean with a high accuracy. Nevertheless, the complexity of the seawater causes variable marine optical properties, which gives huge potentiality to develop a HSRL working at different wavelengths in order to promote the inversion accuracy and increase the detection depth. The field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI), whose central transmittance can be tuned to any wavelength and field of view is large, can be employed as the HSRL spectral filter and solves problems that the operating wavelength of the iodine filter is fixed and the field of view of Fabry-Perot interferometer is small. The principle of the HSRL based on the FWMI designing for the ocean remote sensing will be presented in detail. In addition, the availability of the application of the FWMI influenced by the disturbance of the states of Brillouin scattering is analyzed and the preliminary theory shows that the HSRL instrument basing on FWMI could be employed in the marine remote sensing with a high accuracy.

Abstract:Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has been used extensively to accumulate high-resolution topographical data in air. Over the last few decades, the technology has been extended to capture bathymetric data in coastal waters. With a large portion of the ocean unmapped, there is opportunity for technology advancement to deliver improved quality and efficiency in the mapping of shallow water regions. This paper assesses existing technology and the history of underwater LiDAR profiling and bathymetric mapping to identify potential opportunities for future growth. Alternative uses for laser ranging systems, both subsea and in-air will drive expected system specifications. The findings assist with classifying important design choices that drive the functionality and suitability of a LiDAR for different marine science applications.

Abstract:Bathy LiDAR has over the last ten years seen a dramatic development, in the range of ten times the resolution, dramatically improved hydrographic object detection, operation in higher turbidity waters and complex river environments. There has been a strong increase of the use of the technology globally for applications such as coastal surveys for sea-charts, shoreline erosion monitoring, coastal infrastructure planning, environmental mapping, river surveys for flood risk analysis and mitigation. Leading hydrographic offices have implemented the technology for shallow water surveys in their national coastal mapping programs, and further countries are planning for the doing the same. The latest advancements also include developments of bathy LiDAR for Maritime surveillance applications, where the data must be available in close to real time already in the survey aircraft, to enable immediate analysis and response related to safety at sea and prevention of illegal activities.

Abstract:Traditional bathymetry LiDAR (light detection and ranging) onboard manned and/or unmanned airborne systems cannot operate in the context of narrow rivers in urban areas with high buildings and in mountainous areas with high peaks. Therefore, this study presents a prototype of a lightweight bathymetry LiDAR onboard an unmanned shipborne vehicle (called "GQ-Cor 19"). The GQ-Cor 19 system primarily includes an emitting optical module, a receiving optical module, control module, detection module, high-speed A/D sampling module, and data processing system. Considering that the "GQ-Cor 19" is extremely close to the water surface, various new technical challenges are encountered, such as significant laser scattering energy from the surface of the water, which saturates signals received by the photomultiplier tube detector. Therefore, this study presents various new technical solutions, including (1) an improved Bresenham algorithm, (2) a small and lightweight receiving optical system with a split-field method, and (3) a data acquisition module with a high-speech A/D collector. Following a series of different experimental verifications, the results demonstrate that the new generation of single-band LiDAR onboard an unmanned shipborne vehicle can swiftly measure the underwater depth, and the maximum measurement depth is more than 25 m. The measurement accuracy is better than 30 cm and the weight is less than 12 kg.

Abstract:Airborne light detection and ranging (LiDAR) bathymetry (ALB) is an effective technique for seamless topobathymetric mapping in shallow water. A green laser beam spreads due to the forward scattering effect in the water column, which significantly influences the shape of seafloor reflected waveforms and further introduces bathymetric error. To quantitatively analyze the water column forward scattering effect, this study develops an ALB waveform simulator (ALBWS) based on the semianalytical Monte Carlo numerical simulation (MCNS) and Fournier–Forand (FF) phase function. The ALBWS is first verified by waveforms collected by the Chinese Academy of Sciences Mapper5000 and Optech Aquarius ALB systems around Yuanzhi Island in the South China Sea. Then, based on the ALBWS, the specific bathymetric error and received energy influenced by the forward scattering effect are quantitatively investigated under different system and environmental parameters. Please note that the bathymetric error is obtained by processing noiseless waveforms using the centroiding algorithm. The results indicate that, when the water quality varies from Type I (clear) to Type II (coastal) at a depth of 30 m, the bathymetric error due to the forward scattering effect alone increases from 40 cm to 70 cm, which no longer satisfies the requirements of IHO S44 Level 1a. To achieve more accurate bathymetric results, the ALB collection should be conducted in water areas where the particle size distribution slope is less than 3.91. Moreover, the ALB system can acquire higher bathymetric accuracy and received energy when the instantaneous field of view is approximately 3–11 times greater than the laser divergence angle. This study proposes a robust and flexible model to evaluate the scattering influence on ALB systems, which is not only beneficial for acquiring and processing ALB data but also helpful for optimizing the design of ALB system configurations.

Abstract:Spaceborne environmental detection lidar, acquiring vertical profiles of environmental information at both day and night, has become an important remote sensing technology for several countries. After nearly 30 years of development, this technology has obtained a large amount of global surface information and atmospheric oceanic environmental information, which has made a great contribution to the rational utilization of earth resources and dealing with global ecological environment and climate problems. In this paper, the development history of spaceborne environmental detection lidar is summarized. The key technologies including the space-borne lidar simulator, satellite-ground validation, and data processing and application are emphasized. The future development directions of spaceborne environmental detection lidar are discussed. The background knowledge of spaceborne environmental detection lidar and its key technologies are introduced to help researchers understand how spaceborne environmental detection lidar provides key data for earth system detection , so that the data accuracy can he better guaranteed and lidar data can he more applied into earth science studies.

Abstract:The rapid development of laser altimetry satellite has a great impact on the traditional satellite earth observation field. The accurate elevation data can effectively compensate the lack of optical satellites, while laser altimetry satellite data processing and mapping applications are worthy of attention. Firstly, the principle and characteristics of laser altimetry satellite was introduced, and the its development history was presented. Then, the current on-orbit LiDAR satellite ICESat-2 was focued on, which had a high degree of attention. The satellite configuration characteristics and data processing methods were discussed, and its surveying and mapping capabilities in many fields, such as image joint adjustment, multi-source terrain fusion, global vegetation survey, and shallow water bathymetry et al. were analyzed and revealed. Finally, some thoughts about the development and construction of laser altimetry satellite in China were shared.

Abstract:Alongside widely accepted geometric information, airborne laser bathymetry (ALB) typically captures the temporal profile sample (waveforms) of both the emitted laser pulses and their echoes. These waveforms provide radiometric properties (backscattering intensity) of sensed targets and assist with precise strip registration, classification of fine ground cover (sediment), and advanced geometric modelling. However, effective intensity data extraction is essential because the intensity provided by the LAS file is mixed with invalid signals, multiple echo intensity, and intermittent intensity variations caused by improper interference of automatic gain control, making it unusable for direct analysis. To address this issue, a flexible index sharing mechanism between waveform, coordinate, and intensity data is constructed for interference intensity tracking. A novel waveform classification-based approach is proposed to efficiently extract ALB intensity by dividing waveform data into six categories using morphological differences and topographic data of waveforms. To ensure accurate analysis, duplicate and invalid waveforms are eliminated, leaving only genuine intensity readings. Additionally, a triple spline fit is employed to restore oversaturated waveform segments that were previously suppressed due to exceeding the device's maximum measurable limit. To address the problem of mixing multiple return intensities, waveforms are decomposed using various decomposition models. This approach ensures that different waveform categories retain their respective varying return intensities. The approach is then tested on an ALB dataset collected using Optech Aquarius around Yuanzhi Island in the South China Sea. The results demonstrate a considerable advancement in data quality when compared to LAS file intensity products with a reduction in maximum deviation of 883 [digital number, DN], standard deviation of 350 [DN], and mean absolute error of 310 [DN].

Abstract:Multi-beam bathymetry technology plays an important role in ocean, river and lake surveying and mapping. According to the measurement principle and technical requirements of MS8200 multi-beam bathymetry system, this paper introduces the composition and working principle of the system, the installation and calibration of the system, and the data in the post-processing process, the sea area and terrain characteristics near Wenchang Qinglan Port are taken as the research object to discuss the dual multi-beam bathymetric technology and data processing process, and compare the data of single multi-beam in the same sea area. The research results show that the dual probe of multibeam bathymetry system can better reflect the topographic features of the seafloor compared with the single probe, and shorten the time of mapping, reduce the labor intensity and improve the measurement efficiency, and provide data reference for the stability and reliability evaluation study of the dual probe of multibeam bathymetry system.

Abstract:A traditional bathymetric light detection and ranging (B-LiDAR) has disadvantages such as large volume, heavy weight, necessity for airport and runway, and high cost for operation. For these reasons, this article presents an off-axis four-reflection optical structure for single-band (532 nm) B-LiDAR carried on unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). This optical system fully considers characteristics of the laser echo energy under different water conditions, which relate to the optical system parameters, such as peak power of laser emission, field of view (FOV), and receiver aperture area. The proposed optical system designs the objective lens, which is composed of one avalanche photodiode (APD) detector and two photomultipliers (PMTs) detectors, the primary mirror, the second mirror, the plane mirror, and the third mirror, two split field mirrors that separate the echo signals from shallow water, medium water, and deep water, respectively. This proposed optical system was verified in a laboratory tank, swimming pool, Lijiang river, lake, and the Qiaogang Sea Bay. It is found that the maximum water depth measured can reach 25.0 m with an error of less than 0.1 m on average. The dimension and weight of this LiDAR reach mm and 10.25 kg, respectively, which is the lightest and smallest B-LiDAR worldwide.

Abstract:Building a high-precision bathymetry digital elevation model is essential for navigation planning, marine and lake resource planning, port construction, and underwater archaeological projects. However, existing bathymetry methods have yet to be effectively and comparatively analyzed. This paper comprehensively reviews state-of-the-art bathymetry methods, including data acquisition techniques, model accuracy, and interpolation algorithms for underwater terrain mapping. First, We assess the merits and drawbacks of novel data acquisition devices, such as single-beam/multi-beam echo sounders and light detection and ranging systems. After that, we analyze the accuracy of the ETOPO1, GEBCO_2022 and SRTM15 to provide valuable insights into their performance. Furthermore, we evaluate ANUDEM, Inverse Distance Weighting, Kriging and Nearest Neighbor interpolation algorithms in different underwater terrains by comparing their applicability, reliability, and accuracy in various underwater environments. Finally, we discuss the development trends and challenges in underwater bathymetry technology and offer a forward-looking perspective on the future of this essential field.

Abstract:The feasibility of an overwater light-sheet Scheimpflug lidar system for underwater three-dimensional (3D) profiling is considered. Corrections for the refraction at the air-water interface are proposed. Applications for profiling marine ecosystems are explored in distance up to several meters, and millimeter precision is accomplished. The experimental results demonstrate that our system is suitable for underwater 3D profiling and has great potential in marine biological detection.

Abstract:Airborne LiDAR bathymetry (ALB) is a useful technology for seamless topobathymetric mapping, offering high acquisition rate and point density. However, in very shallow waters ( 90%). In the simulated dataset, the root mean square error of the laser travel time between the estimated and truth values is 0.22 ns (corresponding to 2.5-cm slant range). The results indicate that the proposed method provides a new solution for filling the bathymetric gap in very shallow water, which is very essential for topobathymetry mapping.
