This difficulty results from the similarity and overlaps of the sensitivity kernels. Since density perturbation generates both P- and S-wave scatterings with different radiation characteristics, the parameter couplings between density and two velocities becomes more complex and significant. The inverse Hessian is proved to mitigate the tradeoff effects, and thus reasonable parameter reconstructions are feasible. We develop an improved scattering-integral-based truncated Gauss-Newton (SI-TGN) method to recover density and P- and S-wave velocities simultaneously. In this method, the inverse Gauss-Newton Hessian is estimated by iteratively solving the Gauss-Newton equation using a matrix-free conjugate gradient algorithm. The analysis on wavefield-separated sensitivity kernels illustrate the tradeoffs between P- and S-wave velocities and density in EFWI. Numerical experiments on a canonical inclusion model and a complicated SEG/EAGE Overthrust model demonstrate that this SI-TGN is effective to mitigate the tradeoff effects, accelerate convergence rate, and thus provide an accurate density reconstruction as well as P- and S-wave velocities.
