Abstract:The surge in demand for cost-effective, lightweight, and rapidly responsive sensors has propelled research in various fields, and traditional sensors face limitations in performing up to the mark due to their intrinsic properties and a lack of innovative fabrication techniques. Consequently, over the last decade, a notable shift has been toward harnessing naturally existing nanostructures to develop efficient and versatile sensing devices. One such nanostructure in morpho butterfly wings has attracted attention because of its vibrant uniqueness and diverse sensing properties. This review will explore recent interdisciplinary research endeavors on the nanostructure, including chemical, vapor, and acoustic detection. Furthermore, its potential as an infrared sensor, considerations related to heat transfer properties, and a brief overview of various replication techniques and challenges encountered in reproducing the intricate nanostructure are discussed.

Morphological Study of Insect Mechanoreceptors to Develop Artificial Bio-Inspired Mechanosensors

Abstract:Mechanoreceptors of the insect play a vital role for the insect to sense and monitor the environmental parameters, like flow, tactile pressure, etc. This paper presents the studies made on the morphology of the mechanoreceptor of the insect Blattella asahinai (scientific name of cockroach) that is a hair-like structure known as trichoid sensilla, by scanning electron microscope and confocal laser microscope. The scanned images show the details of sensilla components in which the hair is embedded in the sockets, which are connected with the cuticle and joint membrane, where the dendrite touches at the base of the hair passing through the cuticle layers. The images also show that the tubular bodies and microtubules are tightly compacted inside the dendrite. This paper presents the details of how the sensilla work when an external stimulus act on them. The hair deflects with the disturbance of the cuticle and joint membrane, and this deformed hair leans on the dendrite, which is attached at the base of the hair that in turn presses the tubular bodies and microtubules, which develop negative ions passing down through the dendrite to the neuron, which provides information as an electric signal to the brain of the insect so that it responds for necessary action. Based on the morphological studies, sensing mechanism, material properties of the components, and design principles will be evolved for the development of an artificial bio-inspired sensor. A solid works model of the sensilla is also presented.

Abstract:Abstract Natural biological systems are constantly developing efficient mechanisms to counter adverse effects of increasing human population and depleting energy resources. Their intelligent mechanisms are characterized by the ability to detect changes in the environment, store and evaluate information, and respond to external stimuli. Bio-inspired replication into man-made functional materials guarantees enhancement of characteristics and performance. Specifically, butterfly architectures have inspired the fabrication of sensor and energy materials by replicating their unique micro/nanostructures, light-trapping mechanisms and selective responses to external stimuli. These bio-inspired sensor and energy materials have shown improved performance in harnessing renewable energy, environmental remediation and health monitoring. Therefore, this review highlights recent progress reported on the classification of butterfly wing scale architectures and explores several bio-inspired sensor and energy applications.

Abstract:<p>In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in the novel bioinspired sensors, especially for their selectivity, response time, and sensitivity. Particular attention is paid to the novel optical functional materials that are crucial for the sensors to achieve various energy transduction. Ideally, many critical parameters of the optical sensing materials can be appropriately tailored to meet various specific requirements using optimal design. Over a long and cruel evolution, nature's creatures have created a variety of photonic structures. One impressive example is the iridescent wings of butterfly. The natural photonic crystals on its surfaces have inspired diverse novel designs of optical functional sensing materials, especially in the past three years. Herein, this review mainly discusses recent advances of the burgeoning butterfly-inspired sensing materials with optical properties that can be modulated in response to different external stimuli. First, their optical sensing performance to infrared radiation/thermal, vapor, liquid, pH, and so on are discussed in details. Then, the fabrication methods and their working mechanisms are also introduced. Furthermore, the general strategies of these emerging sensing materials and their potential applications are also discussed in-depth as well as their limitations and the future challenges.</p>

Abstract:The revealed “Christmas-tree” nanostructures in the cover and ground scales of the butterfly Morpho menelaus are responsible for the observed iridescent blue color and the diffraction pattern of the wings. The aspect ratio of nanostructures in ground scales is more than 5 times higher than that of Morpho peleides cover scales. Inspired by the butterfly, artificial nanostructures are fabricated successfully by templating the scales imbricating in the wings with low-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) methods. Through structural characterizations and optical measurements, we reveal that the hybrid structures inherit not only the morphology of the scales with high fidelity but also the homologous optical features including iridescence and diffraction. Besides, water contact angle measurements on both uncoated and coated wings show hydrophobic results. The integration of bio-templates and ALD methods provide a potential route to fabricate the nanostructures with multi-functional features, which may be especially crucial in the applications of innovative functional optical devices.
Investigating the Effect of Reflectance Tuning on Photocatalytic Dye Degradation with Biotemplated ZnO Photonic Nanoarchitectures Based on Morpho Butterfly Wings

Abstract:Photonic nanoarchitectures of butterfly wings can serve as biotemplates to prepare semiconductor thin films of ZnO by atomic layer deposition. The resulting biotemplated ZnO nanoarchitecture preserves the structural and optical properties of the natural system, while it will also have the features of the functional material. The ZnO-coated wings can be used directly in heterogeneous photocatalysis to decompose pollutants dissolved in water upon visible light illumination. We used the photonic nanoarchitectures of different Morpho butterflies with different structural colors as biotemplates and examined the dependence of decomposition rates of methyl orange and rhodamine B dyes on the structural color of the biotemplates and the thickness of the ZnO coating. Using methyl orange, we measured a ten-fold increase in photodegradation rate when the 20 nm ZnO-coated wings were compared to similarly coated glass substrates. Using rhodamine B, a saturating relationship was found between the degradation rate and the thickness of the deposited ZnO on butterfly wings. We concluded that the enhancement of the catalytic efficiency can be attributed to the slow light effect due to a spectral overlap between the ZnO-coated Morpho butterfly wings reflectance with the absorption band of dyes, thus the photocatalytic performance could be changed by the tuning of the structural color of the butterfly biotemplates. The photodegradation mechanism of the dyes was investigated by liquid chromatography–mass spectroscopy.

Abstract:Abstract Photonic crystals are some of the more spectacular realizations that periodic arrays can change the behavior of electromagnetic waves. In nature, so-called structural colors appear in insects and even plants. Some species create beautiful color patterns as part of biological behavior such as reproduction or defense mechanisms as a form of biomimetics. The interaction between light and matter occurs at the surface, producing diffraction, interference and reflectance, and light transmission is possible under suitable conditions. In particular, there are two Colombian butterflies, Morpho cypris and Greta oto , that exhibit iridescence phenomena on their wings, and in this work, we relate these phenomena to the photonic effect. The experimental and theoretical approaches of the optical response visible region were studied to understand the underlying mechanism behind the light–matter interaction on the wings of these Colombian butterflies. Our results can guide the design of novel devices that use iridescence as angular filters or even for cosmetic purposes.

Biologically inspired flexible quasi-single-mode random laser: an integration of Pieris canidia butterfly wing and semiconductors

Abstract:Quasi-periodic structures of natural biomaterial membranes have great potentials to serve as resonance cavities to generate ecological friendly optoelectronic devices with low cost. To achieve the first attempt for the illustration of the underlying principle, the Pieris canidia butterfly wing was embedded with ZnO nanoparticles. Quite interestingly, it is found that the bio-inspired quasi-single-mode random laser can be achieved by the assistance of the skeleton of the membrane, in which ZnO nanoparticles act as emitting gain media. Such unique characteristics can be interpreted well by the Fabry-Perot resonance existing in the window-like quasi-periodic structure of butterfly wing. Due to the inherently promising flexibility of butterfly wing membrane, the laser action can still be maintained during the bending process. Our demonstrated approach not only indicates that the natural biological structures can provide effective scattering feedbacks but also pave a new avenue towards designing bio-controlled photonic devices.

Abstract:The mechanism of biological sensors for three typical arthropods in mechanical sensing, as well as recent research and application on bio‐mimetic devices, are discussed in this study. The structure of biological sensor and bionic sensor are creatively separated into environmental information capture device, transduction unit, and intelligent processing module from the standpoint of biological sensing mechanism and engineering technology. The high‐performance optimized design of industrial sensor has been a challenging point of breakthrough in high‐end equipment manufacturing technology since its invention. Highly sensitive detectors have emerged during a long evolutionary period and have shown to be essential tools for ensuring species survival and reproduction. As a result, bio‐sensors have served as a great source of inspiration for high‐sensitivity and high‐performance sensor. Mechanism of bio‐sensors in mechanical detection of three common arthropods, as well as the most recent research results in bio‐mimetic devices, have been discussed in this study. The structure of bio‐detectors and bio‐sensors has been creatively split into environmental information capture device and transduction unit from the standpoint of biological sensing mechanisms and engineering technology. And development of bio‐sensors will rely on design and exploitation of mechanical structures and functional materials with various couplings. Exploration of bionic mechanical sensors is in its early stages and further research is required. High‐performance research on biological detectors and multi‐level bionic design on industrial sensors have been enhanced by revealing mechanism of environmental information capture in environment capture device from basic science and synthesizing new multi‐functional materials of transduction unit with a combination of biological materials and production technology.

Controlled Replication of Butterfly Wings for Achieving Tunable Photonic Properties

Abstract:The fine structure of the wing scale of a Morpho Peleides butterfly was examined carefully, and the entire configuration was completely replicated by a uniform Al2O3 coating through a low-temperature ALD process. An inverted structure was achieved by removing the butterfly wing template at high temperature, forming a polycrystalline Al2O3 shell structure with precisely controlled thickness. Other than the copy of the morphology of the structure, the optical property, such as the existence of PBG, was also inherited by the alumina replica. Reflection peaks at the violet/blue range were detected on both original wings and their replica, while a simple alumina coating shifted the reflection peak to longer wavelength because of the change of periodicity and refraction index. The alumina replicas also exhibited similar functional structures as waveguide and beam splitter, which may be used as the building blocks for photonic ICs with high reproducibility and lower fabrication cost compared to traditional lithography techniques.
Integrating Cu2O Colloidal Mie Resonators in Structurally Colored Butterfly Wings for Bio-Nanohybrid Photonic Applications

Abstract:Colloidal Cu2O nanoparticles can exhibit both photocatalytic activity under visible light illumination and resonant Mie scattering, but, for their practical application, they have to be immobilized on a substrate. Butterfly wings, with complex hierarchical photonic nanoarchitectures, constitute a promising substrate for the immobilization of nanoparticles and for the tuning of their optical properties. The native wax layer covering the wing scales of Polyommatus icarus butterflies was removed by simple ethanol pretreatment prior to the deposition of Cu2O nanoparticles, which allowed reproducible deposition on the dorsal blue wing scale nanoarchitectures via drop casting. The samples were investigated by optical and electron microscopy, attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible spectrophotometry, microspectrophotometry, and hyperspectral spectrophotometry. It was found that the Cu2O nanoparticles integrated well into the photonic nanoarchitecture of the P. icarus wing scales, they exhibited Mie resonance on the glass slides, and the spectral signature of this resonance was absent on Si(100). A novel bio-nanohybrid photonic nanoarchitecture was produced in which the spectral properties of the butterfly wings were tuned by the Cu2O nanoparticles and their backscattering due to the Mie resonance was suppressed despite the low refractive index of the chitinous substrate.

Phototunable Morpho Butterfly Microstructures Modified by Liquid Crystal Polymers

Abstract:The unique hierarchical microstructures of the Morpho butterfly wing (MBW) exhibit angle independent blue iridescence. Biomimicking these microstructures and turning them into functional photonic crystals (PhCs) have fascinated scientists yet remain challenging. Here, a phototunable PhC is fabricated by depositing the azobenzene‐containing linear liquid crystal polymer (LLCP) onto the MBW template. Thanks to the excellent mechanical properties and deformability of LLCP, the generated 3D bilayer microstructures demonstrate hierarchical deformation upon UV light irradiation, leading to a blueshift of the reflection peak (70 nm) and a remarkable change of reflectance (40%). This phototunable PhC may have potential applications in pigments, cosmetics, and sensors.
An ingenious replica templated from the light trapping structure in butterfly wing scales

Abstract:Although the physical mechanism of light trapping property of butterfly wings is well understood, it remains a challenge to create artificial replicas of these natural functional structures. Here, we synthesized a SiO2 inverse replica of a light trapping structure in butterfly wing scales using a method combining a sol-gel process and subsequent selective etching. First, the reflectance spectrum was taken to measure the reflectivity. Then, FESEM and TEM were used to observe the coupling structure of scales and the replicas. Afterwards, assisted by SEM and TEM data, 3D optimized models of the structures and fabrication process were generated by software. Finally, the parametric comparisons of the morphologies and structures between the original template and the inverse SiO2 replica were carefully conducted, and it was found that the original structures of bio-templates were well inherited by the structures of the inverse replica. This work would open up possibilities for an extensive study of mimicking novel bio-inspired functional materials, and the reported biomimetic technique confirms the feasibility of extending the functional structures in butterfly wings to particular optical devices in the field of space exploration, space equipment, photoelectrical devices and photo-induced sensors.

Abstract:Nano-precision machining using focused ion beam (FIB) is widely applied in many fields. So far, FIB-based nanofabrication for specific nanoscale applications has become an interesting topic to realize more diversities for nano-construction. Through FIB machining, we can easily achieve the required nano- and micro-scale patterning, device fabrication, and preparation of experimental samples. Nowadays, there is an increasing trend to learn from nature to design novel multi-functional materials and devices. Thus, more interestingly, another advantage of FIB is that it can be conveniently used to analyze the natural photonic structures, e.g., those in the butterfly which exhibits amazing optical phenomena due to sub-wavelength structural color. Accordingly, in the present study, structural analyses for butterfly wings were carried out using FIB. It is found that the photonic structures for the backside and frontside of the butterfly wing studied differ considerably. The difference accounts for the different colors on the dorsal and ventral sides of butterfly wings.
Bioinspired Morphing Wings: Mechanical Design and Wind Tunnel Experiments.

Abstract:Bioinspired morphing wings are part of a novel research direction offering greatly increased adaptability for use in unmanned aerial vehicles. Recent models published in the literature often rely on simplifications of the bird wing apparatus and fail to preserve many of the macroscopic morphological features. Therefore, a more holistic design approach could uncover further benefits of truly bioinspired bird wing models. With this issue in mind, a prototype inspired by crow wings (Corvus genus) is developed, which is capable of planform wing morphing. The prototype imitates the feather structure of real birds and replicates the folding motion with a carbon fiber reinforced polymer skeleton with one controllable degree of freedom. The mechanism supplies a smooth airfoil lifting surface through a continuous morphing motion between a fully extended and a folded state. When extended, it has an elliptic planform and emarginated slots between primary remiges. In the folded state, the wingspan is reduced by 50% with a 40% reduction in surface area and the aspect ratio decreases from 2.9 to 1.2. Experimental data from a subsonic wind tunnel investigation is presented for flow velocities ranging from 5 to 20 m s(-1), corresponding to Reynolds numbers between 0.7 x 10(5)-2.8 x 10(5). The wing is analyzed in the three static states (folded, intermediate, and extended) through aerodynamic coefficients and flow visualizations along the surface. The bioinspired design enables the wing to capture several phenomena found on real bird wings. Through its morphing capabilities and intrinsic softness, the wing can sustain large angles of attack with greatly delayed stall and maintain optimal performance at different velocities.

Abstract:Biological systems contain various amazing examples that can display adaptive and active behaviors in response to external stimuli. The changes of skin color and/or shapes according to environmental changes are common examples of the adaptive and active behaviors of creatures for better survival. To mimic these outstanding sensing and actuating behaviors of creatures, a new generation of bio-inspired sensing and actuating materials, have been recently attracting extensive attentions. Based on stimuli-responsive materials, these bio-inspired sensing and actuating materials can also exhibit the capabilities of changing their colors and/or shapes upon specific external stimuli, which hold great promise in a variety of fields such as sensors, actuators, flexible electronics, soft robotics and various biomedical applications. This review summarizes the-state-of-the-art progress of bio-inspired sensing and actuating materials, with focuses on the design principles and the technologies for forming these materials, as well as the introduction of their potential for versatile applications. Finally, an outlook is presented for discussing the challenges and future direction for the bio-inspired sensing and actuating materials.

Abstract:A biomimetic strain sensor was designed and constructed based on Ir nanoparticles-modified multi-wall carbon nanotubes (Ir NPs@MWCNTs) and parallel Pt layer/dragon skin with carbonized butterfly wing patterns. This sensor exhibits high gauge factor (similar to 515.4), extensive tensile range (0%-96%), and swift response (similar to 300 ms), especially remarkable stability up to 60 000 cycles. The work mechanism has been proposed based on the experimental test and finite-element method. Some important applications such as human motion and micro-expression recognition have been confirmed using 3 x 3 flexible biomimetic sensor array.
Anti-reflective properties of butterfly-wing-micro-nano structures in the infrared band

Abstract:The delicate and intricate micro-nano structure on the surface of butterfly wings is genuinely remarkable. Despite its potential for anti-reflection purposes, this surface structure's theoretical analysis, optimal design, and anti-reflection performance regulation remain a mystery. The anti-reflection characteristics of butterfly Papilio epiphorbas , butterfly Parthenos syvia , and butterfly Sasakia charonda butterfly wings in the infrared band were carefully examined using finite difference time domain simulation and equivalent medium theoretical calculation. The anti-reflection mechanism of the surface micro-nano structure parameters and infrared wavelength of the butterfly wings of butterfly Papilio epiphorbas , butterfly Parthenos syvia , and butterfly Sasakia charonda were revealed. By Fourier infrared reflectance test and simulation of the three butterfly wings, the results show that the structural color scales of the three butterfly wings can achieve a better anti-reflection effect in the infrared band. The anti-reflection performance of the extracted bionic butterfly wings is improved by 0.34%, 2.44%, and 5.46%, respectively, compared with the original butterfly wings.
