Abstract:The majority of existing research focuses on life expectancy calculation, with few stu-dies focusing on life expectancy confidence intervals and even fewer studies using Chinese data.In this study, the Chiang life expectancy variance method and its modifications by Lo et al.(method 1,method 2,and method 3)were used to calculate the 95 percent confidence intervals for life expectancy at birth in each province in 2010.Our findings show differences in the confidence intervals when using each of the four methods to calculate the life expectancy at birth. With a large population size, there are more deaths by age, and method 2 estimated the largest length of the confidence interval for life expectancy at birth. With a small population size, there are fewer deaths by age, and method 3 estimated the largest length of the confidence interval for life expectancy at birth. Therefore, while it is a valuable endeavor to analyze life expectancy, choosing an appropriate method is crucial. As shown, different methods produce different confidence intervals based on characteristics, including population size and number of deaths.
