Abstract:Earthquake-induced loss of buildings is a fundamental concern for earthquake-resilient cities. The FEMA P-58 method is a state-of-the-art seismic loss assessment method for buildings. Nevertheless, because the FEMA P-58 method is a refined component-level loss assessment method, it requires highly detailed data as the input. Consequently, the knowledge of building details will affect the seismic loss assessment. In this study, a seismic loss assessment method for buildings combining building information modeling (BIM) with the FEMA P-58 method is proposed. The detailed building data are automatically obtained from the building information model in which the building components may have different levels of development (LODs). The determination of component type and the development of the component vulnerability function when the information is incomplete are proposed. The modeling rules and the information extraction from BIM through the Autodesk Revit application programming interface (API) are also proposed. Finally, to demonstrate the rationality of the proposed method, an office building that is available online is selected, and the seismic loss assessments with various-LOD BIM data are performed as case studies. The results show that, on the one hand, even if the available building information is limited, the proposed method can still produce an acceptable loss assessment; on the other hand, given more information, the accuracy of the assessment can be improved and the uncertainty can be reduced using the proposed method. Consequently, this study provides a useful reference for the automation of the refined seismic loss assessment of buildings.
Seismic Loss Prediction of a Building Based on BIM and FEMA P-58

Abstract:Predicting seismic loss is critical for improving the seismic resilience of a building. A prediction method of seismic loss is proposed based on building information model (BIM) technology and the next-generation performance-based design method in the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) P-58 report. Specially, to reduce the workload of structural modeling, an approach of seismic damage predictions is designed using BIM and FEMA P-58, which can directly convert BIM to structural model and provide the seismic damage for loss predictions. Then, an algorithm based on the repair norm and BIM is developed to modify the loss functions in FEMA P-58, through which the more accurate seismic loss can be predicted. Finally, a six-story office building in Beijing, China is used as a case study to predict the seismic loss. The results indicate the predicted loss agrees with the statistical loss from the actual earthquakes. The outcome of this study provides an efficient and accurate method for predicting the seismic loss of a building.

Abstract:Predicting the seismic loss of a building is critical for its resilience. A prediction method for building seismic loss based on the building information model (BIM) and FEMA P-58 is proposed in this study. First, a component-level damage prediction algorithm is designed to establish the mapping from BIM components to the performance groups (PGs) in FEMA P-58, and to predict the component damage using the BIM-based time-history analysis (THA) and the fragility curves of PGs. Subsequently, an ontology-based model considering the deduction rules in the local unit-repair-cost database is created for obtaining exact measurement data of components in a BIM. Meanwhile, a component-level loss prediction algorithm is developed using the measurement data and the unit repair costs corresponding to damage states, by which the predicted seismic losses can agree with the actual situation of the specific region. Finally, a component-level visualization algorithm is designed to display the seismic damage and loss in a virtual reality (VR) environment. A six-story office building in Beijing is used as a pilot test to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed method. The outcome of this study produces a component-level and visual loss prediction result that agrees with the actual situation of the specific region, which can be used to evaluate the post-earthquake economic resilience of different buildings.

Abstract:A multiple level-of-detail (LOD) simulation framework is proposed in this study, to take full consideration of the diversity of structural types, available data, and simulation scenarios in an actual application of seismic-damage simulation to urban buildings. Firstly, key features of the frequently used seismic simulation methods for buildings are discussed, and logical relationships of these simulation methods, as well as the available multi-source data, are established in different LODs. Secondly, implementation of the proposed multi-LOD simulation framework is presented, and a unified city data structure is proposed to enable effective management and storage of data with different LODs. Finally, the Beijing central business district, which has various types of buildings, is investigated in detail to demonstrate the proposed multi-LOD framework. The accuracy, efficiency, and corresponding requirements of different LOD simulations are compared and discussed. The outcomes of this work are expected to provide a useful reference for the application of seismic-damage simulations in complex urban areas.
Integrated Detection and Analysis of Earthquake Disaster Information Using Airborne Data

Abstract:The primary goal of this paper is to discuss an integrated approach to efficiently obtaining earthquake damage information. We developed a framework to rapidly obtain earthquake damage information using post-earthquake airborne optical images. The framework is a standard process that includes data selection, preprocessing, damage factor identification, damage factor evaluation and the development of an earthquake damage information map. We can obtain damage information on severely affected regions using this framework, which will aid in planning rescue and rehabilitation efforts following disasters. We used the integrated approach to obtain damage information using the Lushan earthquake (magnitude 7.0, 20 April 2013) as a case study. The result were as follows: (1) 644 collapsed buildings and 4599 damaged buildings accounted for 13.90% and 96.24%, respectively, of the total number of buildings in the study area; (2) 334 landslides (total area of 691,674.5 m2) were detected and were found at greater probabilities at elevations of 1400–1500 m and higher slope; (3) no secondary disasters, such as barrier lakes, were detected; (4) 15 damaged sections (total of 306 m) were detected in the lifelines, and road sections that are at a high risk of damage (total of 2.4 km) were identified; and (5) key structures, including Yuxi River Dam and three bridges, were intact. Integrating the earthquake damage factor information generated a comprehensive Lushan earthquake damage information map. The integrated approach was proven to be effective using the Lushan earthquake as a case study and can be applied to assess earthquake damage to facilitate efficient rescue efforts.
Regional Seismic Damage Simulation of Buildings: A Case Study of the Tsinghua Campus in China

Abstract:A seismic damage simulation of regional buildings can provide valuable information for earthquake disaster prevention and mitigation. A critical issue for such a simulation is to select an appropriate numerical model that balances accuracy and efficiency for an individual building. Therefore, a moderate-fidelity model, named the multi-story concentrated-mass shear (MCS) model, and an associated parameter determination approach based on the HAZUS performance database are proposed for the simulation, with which the seismic responses of each story can be predicted through a nonlinear time-history analysis (THA). The reliability of this model is validated by comparison with the results of refined finite element (FE) models. Furthermore, the seismic damage simulation of the Tsinghua campus, which includes 619 buildings, is performed. A 40 s nonlinear time-history analysis of the 619 buildings can be completed in 15 s on a desktop computer by using the proposed method. Finally, the seismic responses of the whole area are vividly displayed through a visualization interface. The different damage states for each story are clearly identified for every individual building. The research outcome will assist in providing a useful reference and an effective tool for quick damage assessment and emergency management.

Abstract:Rapid socioeconomic development in earthquake-prone areas can cause rapid changes in seismic loss risks. These changes make it difficult to ensure that risk reduction strategies are realistic, practical and effective over time. To overcome this difficulty, ongoing changes in risk should be captured timely, definitively, and accurately and then specific and well-timed adjustments of the relevant strategies should be made. However, methods for rapidly characterizing such seismic disaster risks over a large area have not been sufficiently developed. By focusing on building loss risks, this paper presents the development of an integrated method that combines remote sensing data and local knowledge to resolve this problem. This method includes two key interdependent steps. (1) To extract the heights and footprint areas of a large number of buildings accurately and quickly from single high-resolution optical remote sensing images; (2) To estimate the floor areas, identify structural types, develop damage probability matrixes, and determine economic parameters for calculating monetary losses due to seismic damage to the buildings by reviewing building-relevant local knowledge based on these two parameters (i.e., the building heights and footprint areas). This method is demonstrated in the Tangshan area of China. Based on the integrated method, the total floor area of the residential and public office buildings in central Tangshan in 2009 was 3.99% lower than the corresponding area number obtained by a conventional earthquake loss estimation project. Our field-based verification indicated that the mean relative error of the method for estimating the floor areas of the assessed buildings was 2.99%. A simulation of the impacts of the 1976 Ms 7.8 Tangshan earthquake using this method indicated that the total damaged floor area of the residential and public office buildings and the associated direct monetary loses in the study area could have been 8.00 and 28.73 times greater, respectively, than in 1976 if this earthquake had recurred in 2009, which is a strong warning to the local people regarding the increasing challenges they may face.

Abstract:Various methods have been developed to detect and assess building’s damages due to earthquakes using remotely sensed data. After the launch of the high resolution sensors such as IKONOS and QuickBird, it becomes realistic to identify damages on the scale of individual building. However the low accuracy of the results has often led to the use of visual interpretation techniques. Moreover, it is very difficult to estimate the degree of building damage (e.g. slight damage, moderate damage, or severe damage) in detail using the existing methods. Therefore, a novel approach integrating LiDAR data and high resolution optical imagery is proposed for evaluating building damage degree quantitatively. The approach consists of two steps: 3D building model reconstruction and rooftop patch-oriented 3D change detection. Firstly, a method is proposed for automatically reconstructing 3D building models with precise geometric position and fine details, using pre-earthquake LiDAR data and high resolution imagery. Secondly, focusing on each rooftop patch of the 3D building models, the pre- and post-earthquake LiDAR points belonging to the patch are collected and compared to detect whether it was destroyed or not, and then the degree of building damage can be identified based on the ratio of the destroyed rooftop patches to all rooftop patches. The novelty of the proposed approach is to detect damages on the scale of building’s rooftop patch and realize quantitative estimation of building damage degree.

Abstract:Assessing the actual seismic economic losses of regional building portfolios is essential to quantify the seismic resilience of urban and rural areas. Various building clusters indicate different damage levels under real earthquakes of different intensities, which directly leads to apparent anomalies in the actual economic losses of various building portfolios. This paper proposes an economic loss assessment model for large-scale regional building portfolios, considering the damage probability matrices. The traditional empirical vulnerability quantification method is optimized and updated by combining the analysis methods of probability risk, reliability, macroseismic intensity, and instrument intensity. Five typical building sample sets (total survey area: 56,937.1893 × 10 4 m 2 ) of 57 typical cataclysmic earthquakes that occurred in Yunnan Province, China, from 1993 to 2022 are collected and processed, and an updated fragility dataset is established. The calculation model considering empirical structural vulnerability and economic loss quantitative parameters is innovatively developed. Combined with the quantitative approaches of the multidimensional nonlinear fitting model and the established regional empirical structural vulnerability database, the seismic loss evaluation model of large-scale regional structures is established. Ultimately, the earthquake loss point cloud and matrix of typical building portfolios in the large-scale zone are developed using cloud analysis and the proposed seismic loss evaluation model.

Improving the accuracy of near real-time seismic loss estimation using post-earthquake remote sensing images

Abstract:With the rapid development of remote sensing technology, satellite or aerial images from the disaster area become available within 24 hours after an earthquake. The collapsed buildings can be easily identified from these images. In this work, a framework for near real-time seismic loss estimation for regional buildings is proposed, which improves the accuracy of nonlinear time-history analysis (THA)-based loss estimations by taking advantage of the identified building collapse scene of the disaster area. Specifically, a series of THA are performed for the target regional buildings, thereby generating a number of simulation results. Those simulation results that bear strong similarities to the identified collapse scene are identified as the optimal solutions, which will be used to estimate the seismic loss. The simulation results of the case studies signify that the use of the identified building collapse scene leads to much closer estimations to actual economic losses.

Abstract:Regional seismic damage simulation of buildings provides decision-makers with important information for earthquake disaster prevention and mitigation. Utilizing nonlinear time history analysis using multiple-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) models for buildings, and the next-generation performance-based earthquake engineering, an open-source general-purpose scientific workflow for seismic damage simulation and loss prediction of urban buildings (referred to as SimCenter Workflow) is presented in this study. To introduce the SimCenter Workflow process in detail and demonstrate its advantages, a seismic damage simulation and loss prediction for 1.8 million buildings in the San Francisco Bay Area were performed using the SimCenter Workflow. The open nature and modularization of the SimCenter Workflow facilitate its extensibility and make it practical for researchers to apply to seismic damage simulations in other regions.

Abstract:Large earthquakes frequently occurred and caused substantial damage and losses in Chinese densely populated urban areas. It is worth clarifying that the existing earthquake loss assessment tools in China do not consider its special characteristics (e.g., tectonics, geology and building inventory). In this paper, an integrated framework for earthquake loss assessment in China is proposed and a geographic information system (GIS)-based system, referred to as China Earthquake Disaster Loss Assessment System, is developed. The individual building is considered as the basic geographical unit and described in three levels (i.e., basic attributes, structural performance parameters, and functional parameters. A three-step data collection method is proposed, and the mobile GIS-based field collection tool is developed. A broad, reasonable, and upgradeable building typology is then presented for the seismic fragility assessment of building blocks. A new economic loss model and casualty model are also presented by considering the characteristics of economics and population. The proposed methodology is implemented in Baqiao District, and the estimation of economic losses and casualties under a scenario earthquake is discussed, which can provide information for urban disaster risk assessment and mitigation.

Abstract:Seismic loss assessment of two RC frame-core tube buildings respectively designed according to Chinese and US codes were systematically conducted.In terms of economic losses,repair time and casualties,the loss assessments of these two buildings under earthquakes were performed and compared using the new-generation seismic performance assessment method provided by FEMA P-58 in the USA.The analysis results indicate that there exists a certain extent differences between the seismic loss of these two buildings,and more attention should be paid to the performance-based seismic design of nonstructural components.In addition,the seismic performance assessment method of FEMA P-58 is more intuitive and understandable compared with the conventional method.The research outcome will provide a useful reference for the research of resilience-based earthquake design of buildings.

Abstract:Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) has been suggested as a remote sensing tool for condition monitoring of structures. The laser‐generated point cloud data contains 3‐dimensional (3D) coordinate information of the object of interest, which can be processed for structural assessment. Commercial LiDARs also report the reflection intensity, representing the scattering of laser energy on the object surface. This paper proposes an innovative technique to enhance the structure damage quantification by integrating LiDAR point cloud 3D coordinate data and reflection intensity data using photogrammetric techniques. Unlike existing methods, the proposed algorithm simultaneously uses both 3D coordinate and reflection intensity information to improve the accuracy of damage assessment results. LiDAR scan data of an earthquake damaged building was used to demonstrate the damage assessment method of a wall component. The study indicates that the proposed method can significantly improve on the quantification of surface damage of the structure component.

Abstract:Loss assessment methodologies have been introduced to assess the seismic performance of buildings using more meaningful metrics like direct monetary losses. Different approaches exist, each with varying degrees of complexity and requiring different levels of detail, regarding structural behaviour characterisation or damage and loss estimation, for example. With these developments, loss assessment is increasingly becoming a more commonplace instrument in the seismic evaluation and retrofitting of existing buildings. Despite these developments, there is arguably still a need to provide practising engineers with simplified tools with which to conduct building-specific loss assessment. Displacement-based methodologies have been developed over the past number of years with a particular focus on design. The extension of this approach to loss assessment via displacement-based assessment (DBA) is the subject of this article, where a general framework for its implementation to different structural typologies is outlined and illustrated. This forms a general overview of a recently-concluded 5-year research project on the topic in Italy, where different research groups from various universities focused on specific building typologies as part of a coordinated effort to develop DBA for simplified loss assessment. An overview of the DBA method employed is presented here in addition to an overall description of the results of each working group. A summary of the developments for each typology examined is presented along with an illustration of the potential benefits of different retrofitting techniques in reducing monetary losses, whose details are found in the different typology-specific contributions to the special issue in which this paper is presented. To conclude, a comparative implementation of these simplified methodologies is described for three school buildings in Italy.

Regional seismic damage simulation for the buildings in the epicenter area of 2014 ludian earthquake

Abstract:A M6.5 earthquake struck Ludian County, Yunan Province, China on August 3, 2014. The earthquake was proved to be very destructive, although the magnitude is moderate. The seismic damage of buildings predicted by the conventional intensity-based damage probability matrix method differs significantly from the actual damage. To better simulate the seismic damage of urban areas by taking full consideration of the seismic resistances of buildings and the features of ground motions, an improved seismic damage simulation method based on multiple-degree-of-freedom concentrated mass shear (MCS) model and nonlinear time-history analysis (THA) is proposed. The method has the following advantages: (1) easyto-construct building model; (2) reliable nonlinear parameter determination method; and (3) high computation efficiency. Only the building attribute data (i.e., year of construction, number of stories, height, design intensity and structural type) are needed as input for the automatic model generation and parameter determination. Based on extensive experimental and analytical results, the parameter determination method for three types of most widely used multi-story buildings (i.e., reinforced concrete frame structures, reinforced masonry structures and unreinforced masonry structures) is proposed, the reliability of which is verified by comparing with the experimental results of individual structures. Powered by the GPUbased high-performance computing, the simulation can be performed with very high efficiency, which is sufficient for regional damage simulation of large urban areas. With the proposed method, the seismic damage of buildings at the epicenter area of 2014 Ludian Earthquake is simulated. The method can better consider the capacity of each building on each floor and the time/spectral domain characteristics of the ground motions. In consequence, the prediction results agree well with the actual damage. This research may provide a reference for the vulnerability analysis of multi-story buildings in pre-earthquake scenario and the fast seismic damage assessment in post-earthquake scenario.
Seismic damage simulation in urban areas based on a high-fidelity structural model and a physics engine

Abstract:Effective seismic damage simulation is an important task in improving earthquake resistance and safety of dense urban areas. There exist two significant technical challenges for realizing such a simulation: accurate prediction and realistic display. A high-fidelity structural model is proposed herein to accurately predict the seismic damage that was inflicted on a large number of buildings in an urban area via time-history analysis, with which the local damage to different building stories is also explicitly obtained. The accuracy and efficiency of the proposed model are validated by a refined finite element analysis of a typical building. A physics engine-based algorithm is also proposed that realistically displays building collapse, thus overcoming the limitations of the high-fidelity structural model. Furthermore, a visualization system integrating the proposed model and collapse simulation is developed so as to completely display the seismic damage in detail. Finally, the simulated seismic damage of a real medium-sized Chinese city is evaluated to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed techniques, which can provide critically important reference information for urban disaster prevention and mitigation.
Developing a novel hybrid model for seismic loss prediction of regional-scale buildings

Abstract:Seismic loss prediction of regional-scale buildings provides key information for disaster management. However, previous seismic loss prediction models ignored the time-lag effect of cost information and adopted rough loss ratios without considering the characteristics of a region and disaster (including GDP, magnitude, focal depth, epicentre intensity, seismic precautionary intensity, and design basic acceleration of ground motion), which prevented the earthquake loss prediction from achieving sufficient forecasting accuracy. This study develops a novel storey-based seismic direct loss prediction model of regional-scale buildings for the pre-earthquake hazard mitigation and post-earthquake disaster responses based on the machine learning approach. Specifically, the multi-factor support vector machine (SVM) model is established to predict loss ratios, and the hybrid model (ARIMA-SVM) composed of the autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA) model and SVM is built to forecast unit replacement costs. The results show that the above models can achieve promising forecasting performance. Finally, the prediction framework has been applied to Wangjiang Campus of Sichuan University in China, and the spatial distribution of storey-level seismic damage and losses in this region can be visualized. Importantly, the outcome of this study provides a comprehensive and realistic understanding of future losses in a region, which supports decision makings in disaster mitigation.

Building Losses Assessment for Lushan Earthquake Utilization Multisource Remote Sensing Data and GIS

Abstract:On 20 April 2013, a catastrophic earthquake of magnitude 7.0 struck the Lushan County, northwestern Sichuan Province, China. This earthquake named Lushan earthquake in China. The Lushan earthquake damaged many buildings. The situation of building loss is one basis for emergency relief and reconstruction. Thus, the building losses of the Lushan earthquake must be assessed. Remote sensing data and geographic information systems (GIS) can be employed to assess the building loss of the Lushan earthquake. The building losses assessment results for Lushan earthquake disaster utilization multisource remote sensing dada and GIS were reported in this paper. The assessment results indicated that 3.2% of buildings in the affected areas were complete collapsed. 12% and 12.5% of buildings were heavy damaged and slight damaged, respectively. The complete collapsed buildings, heavy damaged buildings, and slight damaged buildings mainly located at Danling County, Hongya County, Lushan County, Mingshan County, Qionglai County, Tianquan County, and Yingjing County.
