Abstract:In recent years, with the continuous development of urbanization in China, construction equipment and technology in the field of building are developing rapidly. China has made much progress in this field, but there is also a gap in comparison. Rapid growth needs to follow the appropriate direction of development. In the future, China will further accelerate the speed of urban intensive construction, so it is of great significance to find a correct direction for the development of Chinese cities. Based on this purpose, this paper summarizes the current situation and rules of building equipment and technology in the view of the rapid development of modern architecture and related practical achievements. This article further analyses the building technology and equipment from the aspects of social culture, political economy, laws and regulations, and discipline development. The conclusion is that in the future development of buildings, the energy saving of construction equipment and technology will become an important symbol of construction technology progress. Finally, this paper puts forward the problems existing in the development of construction equipment and technology in China and the ways to solve these problems.

Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies for Global Change

Abstract:China is undergoing rapid urbanization, along with economic growth and transport automation. Because it is densely populated, China is constrained by natural resource limitations and potential impacts of global climate change. Significant challenges for sustainable urban development include urban sprawl, traffic congestion, air pollution, city layouts not oriented to twenty-first century lifestyles, declining traditional urban culture, selective over-development, and social inequities. Increasing awareness of these pressing problems has led national and provisional governments and cities to seek sustainable urban development solutions. Central ministries and non-government organizations have implemented pilot projects demonstrating best practices in the Chinese context. These are being scaled up to develop local and national guidelines and policies. This paper describes China’s urbanization issues and national and local efforts toward the realization of sustainable urbanization. It is hoped that China’s urbanization trends and challenges will stimulate sustainable and low-carbon concepts and approaches that can enrich sustainable urbanization theory and practices in and beyond China.

Abstract:In order to ensure China, a populous country, to develop in a sustainable way, it is an urgent task to disseminate the concept of sustainability and put it into practice for urban construction. However, it is impossible for China to simply copy the experiences of developed countries, since China has the higher population and building density and less availability of reusable energy per square meter floor area. Therefore, it is necessary to develop the sustainable building technologies applicable to various climate regions, economic conditions, and residential customs in China, as well as sustainable to the most occupants and owners. Based on an introduction of the current situation of the development of construction industry and the energy consumption of buildings in China, this paper analyses the requirements, characteristics, standards for sustainable housing and urban construction, and recommends series of technical approaches along with different phases of sustainable design and construction, which strengthen a good cooperation among researchers, designers and constructors of different majors including architecture, planning, building physics, building services, and so on. Moreover, some issues, which need further research and especially handling, are pointed out along with the recommendations. Finally, policy issue related with the sustainable development of urban construction in China is discussed.

Abstract:The “China Dream” is an “Urban Dream”. Urbanization is an inevitable requirement for promoting social progress. The Chinese government sees sustainable urbanization as an engine of modernization and economic growth. And the country's urbanization has followed a unique course and is perhaps the greatest human-resettlement experiment in the world history, unprecedentedly transforming the Chinese society in a very short period of time. Yet problems have arisen during the historical process, China's unique path to urbanization has avoided many of pitfalls existing in the developing countries in Africa, Asia and South America. This paper attempts to conclude the good jobs as well as problems in China's urbanizing process which might provide successful experience for the underdeveloped nations and regions to promote urbanization. The most brilliant achievement of urbanization in China is that thousands of years' agriculture-dominated country has ended and a new urbanized country has formed, which only consumed several decades. The country's urban infrastructure, living conditions and public service for urban residents have made great improvements. The fostering urban agglomerations are considered to lead the country's socio-economic transformation and possess the greatest potential for the urbanization and economic growth in the coming decades. In general, the traditional land-centered urbanization in China is a typical “incomplete urbanization” and “low-quality urbanization”, presenting impressive characteristics of “four highs and five lows”—high investment, consumption, emission and expansion, and low level, quality, harmony degree, inclusiveness and sustainability. Undoubtedly, the traditional urbanization of China is increasingly difficult to continue and the transformation process should be speeded up as soon as possible. The country should actively explore a people-oriented new-type urbanization way, i.e. an intensive, efficient, rural-urban integration, harmonious and sustainable urbanization model.

Abstract:The commercial demand and urbanization demand brought about by economic development have increased the quantity and quality requirements of construction projects. Civil engineering in the construction process needs to be supported by a number of technologies, such as foundation technology, steel structure technology, concrete technology, etc., the only way to promote the sustainable development of China's construction industry is to accurately master these technologies. With the continuous improvement of China's economic development, people's living standards have also been improved, and therefore also more aspiring to a better life experience, so for the living environment and conditions put forward higher requirements. As the main place for people to live and reside, the quality of the building and its environment have a greater impact on people's living experience, so the quality of the building is given more attention. As the main participant in the implementation of the building, the construction industry in the construction of housing, it is necessary to pay more attention to the quality, while ensuring the quality of construction, but also need to pay attention to the economic benefits. Along with the rapid development of the country, the scale of urban infrastructure is getting bigger and bigger. The breakthrough and innovation of construction technology in civil engineering construction can not only bring more profits for construction enterprises, but also provide a strong guarantee for the smooth progress of construction projects. In order to realize the quality of civil engineering construction projects, building construction units need to be careful and detailed planning for construction details, standardize the corresponding construction technology. Abstract:China’s construction industry has maintained a strong momentum of development these years; however, it still requires improvement in terms of efficiency, quality, safety, and environment protection. China’s construction industry is expected to be transformed and upgraded through digital science and technology innovation, thereby achieving high-quality development. Research methods used in this study include literature review, expert interview, and questionnaire survey. In this article, we first summarize the relationship between digital technology and construction industry transformation and analyze the development status of digital science and technology innovation in the construction industry. Subsequently, we summarize the ecological elements that drive the digital science and technology innovation of the construction industry from the perspectives of government departments, participating organizations, and market environment. Furthermore, we propose strategic paths to drive the high-quality development of the construction industry by means of digital science and technology innovation. This study is expected to provide policy recommendations and an implementation framework for the high-quality development of the industry.

Abstract:Abstract China’s economic growth is one of the most important sources of growth and stabilization of the world economy. Currently, the state has accelerated investment in new infrastructure programs. In addition to traditional infrastructure projects, the Chinese initiative is aimed at developing new technologies.Despite the new coronavirus pandemic, China’s GDP is growing quite fast today. The main support for various sectors of the economy is provided by the state and gives priority to domestic consumption demand, rather than external demand. In the construction industry, investments are increasing in infrastructure projects that contain the idea of modernizing the industry and introducing innovative technologies, including: Bcore CTS construction technology; BIM technologies; 3D printing construction technology; construction technologies using “green concrete”, and modular construction technologies continue to improve. The success of China’s economic reforms is facilitated by the fact that the state focuses on education, among other things, and this has resulted in many highly skilled workers who are able to effectively solve problems in the construction sector. Education reform and the use of new technologies contribute to the rapid development of the construction industry in China.

Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to provide useful information and suggestions for future improvement in relation to China's construction industry and market. With China's rapid economical development and its entry to the World Trade Organization (WTO), much attention has been paid to the China construction business opportunities. However, not much information is available on the history, practices and business cultures of the Chinese construction industry. Design/methodology/approach Through literature review and interviews with industry professionals, this paper discusses the Chinese construction industry in terms of its market and management practice with a focus on tendering processes, contract management, project on‐site supervision and occupational health and safety (OHS) issues. It also discusses the challenges that face the Chinese construction industry. Findings China has gone over a long way in construction tendering, contract management and OHS. Its current practice is in the right direction. However, further development and improvements are necessary. Originality/value This paper provides useful information to Chinese construction personnel for future improvement. This paper also provides useful information to overseas companies who are planning to enter China's construction market in the near future.

Abstract:The construction industry has been developing rapidly over the past decades with rapid urbanization in China. The stream of construction and demolition (C&D) waste must be dealt with special attention because of the shortage of landfill space for disposal and the various dangerous substances contained in it. This study aims to analyze the current status of MSW management and provide some recommendations for the C&D waste management system improvement in China based on statistical data. There are many challenges for the C&D waste management system of China. Lack of legal provisions, appropriate on-site management, public awareness, and effective technology are the main challenges. The findings will assist in the formulation of appropriate policy and Legal provision interventions in addressing the construction waste management problems in China and other countries.

Abstract:The research aims to determine the direction of sustainable development of the construction industry in China and ensure its regular and stable development. A series of data comparisons and methods of the comprehensive analysis showed that the construction industry in China, on the one hand, is a major industry with a huge scale and a significant position on the international market. On the other hand, it is also an industry with low investment in technology, high energy consumption, relatively backward engineering technology, and management. Besides, management and operation methods are relatively traditional and associated with challenges of industry development. The comparison with advanced manufacturing industries and foreign developed countries clarified the shortcomings of China's construction industry and set the directions for future development. These include (1) active development of green building, (2) promotion of the industrialization process, (3) improvement of the technology application level, and (4) timely improvements of the relevant regulations. China also needs to adjust the industrial form of the construction industry and increase the internationalization level. Based on the methods of data description research and literature review, we identified the conditions for sustainable development of the construction industry and proved the importance of using Integrated Project Delivery [IPD] and BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology in the development of the Chinese construction industry. The research allowed us to understand the important role of technology and organization management in developing the construction industry. When we continue to learn lessons from advanced science and technology, smart organization, and management and implement them in the construction industry, only then it will develop sustainably.

Abstract:Industrialised building (IB) is considered by many to have an important role to play in China's residential construction industry due to its potential for improved quality, productivity, efficiency, safety and sustainability. It is surprising, therefore, that although a large number of construction programmes have been completed in the country in recent years, very few have been built in this manner. Quite why this situation exists is unknown. The well-known problems with IB, such as the constraints placed on designer freedom, may be the cause. It is equally possible that, as is typical with developing countries such as China, cost or government issues dominate. On the other hand, in comparison with other countries, the construction industry in China has been widely criticised for its lack of modernity. Either way, there is an urgent need to assess and understand the hindrances to the adoption of IB in residential construction in order to identify what corrective measures, if any, need to be taken.

Abstract:China is becoming the largest construction site in the world. Along with the appearance of a large number of fiercely competitive construction companies and the introduction of new construction techniques and materials, personal injury and fatal accidents in construction sites have continued to occur. However, the law regarding construction safety is also changing and improving. This paper on the construction safety legislative framework was prepared with the support of the Ministry of Construction and the State Administration of Working Safety in China. It is based on a comprehensive literature review and in-depth interviews with legislators, government officials and other participants in the construction process. A clear picture of the current situation relating to construction safety legislation in China is presented. After a brief review of the history of construction safety, the newly formed legal framework is described. Several major challenges have been identified and discussed, for example insufficient regulations and codes, poor coordination within and between the ministries and commissions, pervasive corruption. Suggestions are made for the promotion of construction safety in China, including the improvement of the legislative system based on the three principal laws, and the requirement that owners should bear legal responsibilities.

Abstract:The fast urbanization in China has brought forth many unforeseeable problems and issues for China cities and raised many new challenges to China's urban governance. Among the issues facing China's urban leaders, one of the most urgent challenges is how to develop their urban communities. This paper, on the basis of China's urban reality, categorized its urban communities into four types: old communities, work-unit communities, urban villages, and urban-rural fringe communities; analyzed the unique problems their faces, and proposes the usage of a new community development perspective to design community development strategies and seek to develop these communities according to their unique characteristics.
