Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the link failure problem of network coding for point-to-point networks, multicast networks, and multi-source multi-sink networks, respectively. We decompose the total network link space into three disjoint parts such as the A-set, the B-set and another one, where the A-set include the most important edges to the network capacity and the B-set include the edges having less influence on the network capacity. It is shown that the A-set and B-set of a network can be found out in polynomial time. Abstract:In this correspondence, we investigate the link failure problem based on the recent results of network coding. We propose a concept, named capacity factor of a network, which is the minimum link set that can influence the network capacity, as our basic tool. We define the capacity rank to each link of the network to characterize its criticality and present the concept of the p-stable network. Based on these notions, an upper bound for the capacity factor size is derived and a family of p-stable networks is constructed

Abstract:Protecting against link failures in communication networks is essential to increase robustness, accessibility, and reliability of data transmission. Recently, network coding has been proposed as a solution to provide agile and cost efficient network protection against link failures, which does not require data rerouting, or packet retransmission. To achieve this, separate paths have to be provisioned to carry encoded packets, hence requiring either the addition of extra links, or reserving some of the resources for this purpose. In this paper, we propose network protection codes against a single link failure using network coding, where a separate path using reserved links is not needed. In this case portions of the link capacities are used to carry the encoded packets. The scheme is extended to protect against multiple link failures and can be implemented at an overlay layer. Although this leads to reducing the network capacity, the network capacity reduction is asymptotically small in most cases of practical interest. We demonstrate that such network protection codes are equivalent to error correcting codes for erasure channels. Finally, we study the encoding and decoding operations of such codes over the binary field.

Abstract:We consider communication over a noisy network under randomized linear network coding. Possible error mechanism include node- or link- failures, Byzantine behavior of nodes, or an over-estimate of the network min-cut. Building on the work of Koetter and Kschischang, we introduce a probabilistic model for errors. We compute the capacity of this channel and we define an error-correction scheme based on random sparse graphs and a low-complexity decoding algorithm. By optimizing over the code degree profile, we show that this construction achieves the channel capacity in complexity which is jointly quadratic in the number of coded information bits and sublogarithmic in the error probability.

Abstract:This paper introduces a network coding-based protection scheme against single and multiple link failures. The proposed strategy ensures that in a connection, each node receives two copies of the same data unit: one copy on the working circuit, and a second copy that can be extracted from linear combinations of data units transmitted on a shared protection path. This guarantees instantaneous recovery of data units upon the failure of a working circuit. The strategy can be implemented at an overlay layer, which makes its deployment simple and scalable. While the proposed strategy is similar in spirit to the work of Kamal '07 & '10, there are significant differences. In particular, it provides protection against multiple link failures. The new scheme is simpler, less expensive, and does not require the synchronization required by the original scheme. The sharing of the protection circuit by a number of connections is the key to the reduction of the cost of protection. The paper also conducts a comparison of the cost of the proposed scheme to the 1+1 and shared backup path protection (SBPP) strategies, and establishes the benefits of our strategy.

Abstract:Link and node failures are common two fundamental problems that affect operational networks. Hence, protection of communication networks is essential to increase their reliability, performance, and operations. Much research work has been done to protect against link and node failures, and to provide reliable solutions based on pre-defined provision or dynamic restoration of the domain. In this paper we develop network protection strategies against multiple link failures using network coding and joint capacities. In these strategies, the source nodes apply network coding for their transmitted data to provide backup copies for recovery at the receivers' nodes. Such techniques can be applied to optical, IP, and mesh networks. The encoding operations of protection codes are defined over finite fields. Furthermore, the normalized capacity of the communication network is given by $(n-t)/n$ in case of $t$ link failures. In addition, a bound on the minimum required field size is derived.

Abstract:Linear network coding provides a new communication diagram to significantly increase the network capacity by allowing the relay nodes to encode the incoming messages. However, this communication diagram is fragile to communication errors and node compromising attacks. How to combat errors while maintaining the network efficiency is a challenging research problem. In this paper, we characterize a linear network coding through a series of cascaded linear error-control codes. This representation enables us to determine the independent source of errors in the cascaded network level. It could lead to a successful decoding of the original message and locating of the malicious network nodes. We provide comprehensive theoretical analysis on network coding in both unicast and multicast scenarios. Our research provides a new approach to understand network coding schemes and also a novel methodology to develop network coding schemes that can combat node compromising attacks and locate the malicious nodes.

Abstract:For network coding, each received packet is the combination of multiple independent packets. Thus, the decoding of the whole block of packets may fail even if only one combined packet is incorrectly received, which is referred to as the Error Propagation problem in this work. To solve this problem and make network coding more robust, we shall propose a distributed product code and a corresponding iterative decoding algorithm. By our scheme, the relays can simply forward its incorrectly received packets to the destination without retransmission, hence the transmission delay can be reduced. Simulation result will show that this product coding approach can improve the BER performance of network coding compared to the conventional link-by-link error correction.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose LOCL, a loop coding layer which sits between IP and traditional MAC. Traditional network coding schemes mainly focus on reducing transmissions, while loop coding exploits network coding to reduce link loss rate. We analyze the performance of traditional network coding schemes and loop coding based on a rather general traffic pattern. We find that loop coding is more applicable in highly lossy wireless networks.

Abstract:Uniform network partition is a type of network partitioning problem that consists of dividing a network into components, such that the components are of about the same size and there are few connections between the components. This paper presents a network partition method using dichotomy based on a criterion called sub network exchange gain. We put forward the network fragmentation degree to evaluate the efficiency of a network. Using dichotomy with the criterion of sub network exchange gain, we proved that a network can be split into two communities totally by cutting the least connecting lines.

Abstract:Recent work in network coding shows that, it is necessary to consider both the routing and coding strategies to achieve optimal throughput of information transmission in data networks. So far, most research on network coding has focused on the model of di- rected networks, where each communication link has a fixed direc- tion. In this paper, we study the benefits of network coding in undi- rected networks, where each communication link is bidirectional. Our theoretical results show that, for a single unicast or broadcast session, there are no improvements with respect to throughput due to network coding. In the case of a single multicast session, such an improvement is bounded by a factor of two, as long as half integer routing is permitted. This is dramatically different from previous results obtained in directed networks. We also show that multicast throughput in an undirected network is independent of the selec- tion of the sender within the multicast group. We finally show that, rather than improving the optimal achievable throughput, the ben- efit of network coding is to significantly facilitate the design of effi- cient algorithms to compute and achieve such optimal throughput. Similar to source erasure codes, encoding and decoding op- erations in network coding are also defined over finite fields, which have fixed length representation of symbols. Therefore, information flows do not increase in size after being encoded. The introduction of network coding has essentially expanded the available strategies to achieve optimal transmission throughput: rather than only relying on routing strategies, an optimal trans- mission strategy to achieve the maximum throughput includes both a routing scheme and a corresponding coding scheme. Op- timal throughput achieved with coding is always lower bounded by that achieved without coding. While previous studies of network coding focus on directed networks with unidirectional links, in this paper, we consider undirected networks with bidirectional links. We compare the achievable throughput with coding to other parameters that have been previously defined to reflect a communication network's connectivity or capacity. Such parameters include the packing number (which is also the achievable throughput without cod- ing), strength, and connectivity. We consider three types of communication sessions: unicast (one-to-one), broadcast (one- to-all) and multicast (one-to-many). We examine the relative or- der among the above four quantities, from which we derive upper bounds for the coding advantage, i.e., the ratio of throughput im- provement due to network coding. In contrast to previous work, which shows the coding advantage is not finitely bounded in di- rected networks (3), we show that the coding advantage is always bounded by a constant factor of two in undirected networks. Our proof holds for half-integer routing, where each information flow being transmitted has either an integer or half-integer rate. In addition, we prove that the achievable throughput is inde- pendent of the location of the information source within the com- munication group, which is a unique property that is only valid in undirected settings. Abstract:Link failures in wide area networks are common. To recover from such failures, a number of methods such as SONET rings, protection cycles, and source rerouting have been investigated. Two important considerations in such approaches are the recovery time and the needed spare capacity to complete the recovery. Usually, these techniques attempt to achieve a recovery time less than 50 ms. In this paper we introduce an approach that provides link failure recovery in a hitless manner, or without any appreciable delay. This is achieved by means of a method called diversity coding. We present an algorithm for the design of an overlay network to achieve recovery from single link failures in arbitrary networks via diversity coding. This algorithm is designed to minimize spare capacity for recovery. We compare the recovery time and spare capacity performance of this algorithm against conventional techniques in terms of recovery time, spare capacity, and a joint metric called Quality of Recovery (QoR). QoR incorporates both the spare capacity percentages and worst case recovery times. Based on these results, we conclude that the proposed technique provides much shorter recovery times while achieving similar extra capacity, or better QoR performance overall.

Abstract:Network coding is an emerging area in information theory and is expected to have a signification impact on future design of switching systems. Preliminary studied show that network coding may increase the achievable multicast throughput by significant amounts. Thus, deployment of network coding could help better exploit shared resources such as Internet connections or wireless bandwidth. Construction of network coding has become a hotspot in this area. After introducing the basic concepts of network coding, this paper summarizes the research work on required alphabet size and distribute coding scheme. Applications and open problems of network coding are also discussed.

Abstract:Interleaving is a scheme of adapting random error-correcting codes to bursty channels in the classical coding theory. Network coding has been first introduced as a new paradigm of improving network throughput by allowing coding of incoming messages at the intermediate nodes. Recently network coding has been implemented in the practical case such as the P2P network. In this paper we investigate to build a connection between interleaving and network coding. This coupling is desirable in the applications such as P2P media streaming where burst-errors could severely reduce the performance (like Mosaic). Analysis shows that it is effective and feasible to implement interleaving at sink and source node without introducing extra delay at the intermediate nodes.
Linear Network Coding for Robust Function Computation and Its Applications in Distributed Computing

Abstract:We investigate linear network coding in the context of robust function computation, where a sink node is tasked with computing a target function of messages generated at multiple source nodes. In a previous work, a new distance measure was introduced to evaluate the error tolerance of a linear network code for function computation, along with a Singleton-like bound for this distance. In this paper, we first present a minimum distance decoder for these linear network codes. We then focus on the sum function and the identity function, showing that in any directed acyclic network there are two classes of linear network codes for these target functions, respectively, that attain the Singleton-like bound. Additionally, we explore the application of these codes in distributed computing and design a distributed gradient coding scheme in a heterogeneous setting, optimizing the trade-off between straggler tolerance, computation cost, and communication cost. This scheme can also defend against Byzantine attacks.

Abstract:In wireless distributed computing systems, worker nodes connect to a master node wirelessly and perform large-scale computational tasks that are parallelized across them. However, the common phenomenon of straggling (i.e., worker nodes often experience unpredictable slowdown during computation and communication) and packet losses due to severe channel fading can significantly increase the latency of computational tasks. In this paper, we consider a heterogeneous, wireless, distributed computing system performing large-scale matrix multiplications which form the core of many machine learning applications. To address the aforementioned challenges, we first propose a random linear network coding (RLNC) approach that leverages the linearity of matrix multiplication, which has many salient properties, including ratelessness, maximum straggler tolerance and near-ideal load balancing. We then theoretically demonstrate that its latency converges to the optimum in probability when the matrix size grows to infinity. To combat the high encoding and decoding overheads of the RLNC approach, we further propose a practical variation based on batched sparse (BATS) code. The effectiveness of our proposed approaches is demonstrated by numerical simulations.

Abstract:Wireless network coding is a useful technology that can increase the total throughput of wireless networks. There are, however, few works focusing on wireless network coding over fading channels, which is an important characteristic of many real wireless channels and may result in performance degradation. To investigate the fading channel's impact on network coding, based on the constant transmission power scheme and the channel inversion-transmission scheme, we analyze network throughput over Rayleigh fading channels. It is shown that, when the difference between average channel gains over two broadcasting channels is very large, the throughput of network coding greatly decreases, and the advantage of network coding almost disappears. To address this issue and to maximize the throughput of network coding over fading channels, we formulate the fading compensation for network coding as optimization problems and present the optimal transmission data rate and transmission power level of the relay node. Furthermore, to consider the realization problem of network coding over fading channels, including unbalanced traffic load and asynchronization of packet arrivals, we present two opportunistic optimal network coding (OONC) schemes. Performance evaluation has shown that the proposed opportunistic schemes perform well in various scenarios.

Abstract:Network coding has been proven to be an effective way to achieve the maximum flow capacity in a multicast network, which is bounded by the famous maximum-flow minimum-cut theorem. This technique is specially fit for some new types of network, e.g., ad-hoc, sensor network etc. In order to reduce the cost and complexity of network coding, rather than carrying out encoding at all the nodes along the routes of traffic flow, it is better to find out the nodes that need encoding, and perform the coding algorithm at these nodes only, so that the number of encoding nodes are as few as possible. Fragouli et al. (2004) presented a method to get the encoding nodes by subtree decomposition. In this paper, we take a random graph as the model of wireless ad-hoc multicast network, and apply a modified Ford-Fulkerson algorithm to obtain the maximum flow and encoding nodes in an undirected graph. Its correctness can be proven in theory. Furthermore, simulations are done in different conditions to get some meaningful results of this scheme. We also investigate the statistical properties of encoding nodes and maximum flow in ad-hoc multicast networks by random graph theory. We showed that the number of encoding nodes is approximately binomial-distributed, and as the size of the network tends to infinite, it is approximately a Poisson distribution

Abstract:Network coding has been shown to help achieve optimal throughput in directed networks with known link capacities. However, as real-world networks in the Internet are bi-directed in nature, it is important to investigate theoretical and practical advantages of network coding in more realistic bi-directed and peerto-peer (P2P) network settings. In this chapter, we begin with a discussion of the fundamental limitations of network coding in improving routing throughput and cost in the classic undirected network model. A finite bound of 2 is proved for a single communication session. We then extend the discussions to bi-directed Internet-like networks and to the case of multiple communication sessions. Finally, we investigate advantages of network coding in a practical peerto-peer network setting, and present both theoretical and experimental results on the use of network coding in P2P content distribution and media streaming.
