Abstract:In China, the rapid development greatly greatly promotes the national economic power and living standard but also inevitably brings a series of environmental problems. In order to resolve these problems fundamentally, Chinese scientists have been undertaking research in the area of green chemical engineering (GCE) for many years and achieved great progresses. In this paper, we reviewed the research progresses related to GCE in China and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese and screened four typical topics related to the Chinese resources characteristics and environmental requirements, i.e. ionic liquids and their applications, biomass utilization and bio-based materials/products, green solvent-mediated extraction technologies, and cold plas-mas for coal conversion. Afterwards, the perspectives and development tendencies of GCE were proposed, and the challenges which will be faced while developing available industrial technologies in China were mentioned.

China’s research in chemical engineering journals in Science Citation Index Expanded: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract:This study was designed to evaluate China’s scientific output of chemical engineering in Science Citation Index Expanded in the Web of Science from 1992 to 2011. The document type, language, trend and collaboration patterns were analyzed, as well as the output of different journals. Distributions of article titles and abstracts, author keywords, KeyWords Plus of different periods, and the most cited articles were studied to figure out the research focuses and trends. Chinese Journal of Catalysis , Industrial & Engineering Chemistry Research , and Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering published most of Chinese articles in the area of chemical engineering. The Chemical Engineering Department of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, and East China University of Science and Technology were the top four institutions that published most articles in China. This study showed that adsorption, photocatalysis and synthesis have been the hot points of research in the past two decades, while ionic liquid tends to be the new area of special interest in future. Pseudo-second order model for sorption processes is getting more and more popular with great influence since its publication. In addition, the ratio of institutional independent articles: nationally collaborative articles: internationally collaborative articles has been developed to compare different institutions’ publication characteristics.

Abstract:Chemical product engineering represents an emerging discipline rooted to chemical engineering. Its core content of research lies in precision production of chemical structures. Polymer products contain complex structures at multiple scales. Polymerization processes, to a large extent, determine polymer chain microstructures and morphologies. In the recent years, we developed various polymerization processes and produced polymers having precisely designed chain microstructures. These polymer products showed high performances and superior material properties in targeted applications. Our methodology employs kinetic modeling combined with reactor technologies, based on extensive mechanistic research on polymerization mechanisms. In controlled/living radical(co)polymeri-zation, we developed a novel model-based computer-programed semi-batch copolymerization technology that allows unprecedented precise control over end-to-end copolymer composition of individual chains. In catalytic polymerization of olefins, we developed a reactor technology for in-situ production of polyolefin alloys. This paper provides a brief summary of the recent advances in the polymer product engineering researches.

Abstract:The need to address ecological problems arising from China's increasing industrial growth is the impetus behind many recent developments in China's surging chemical industry. Pollution control is one of the biggest challenges faced by the Chinese chemical industry. The government issued guidelines requiring the SO2 emissions index and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) index to be reduced by 10%. The ENN Group, a private enterprise in China, has established a research center where it has been pursuing the integration of novel technologies and engineering methodologies. China has been exploring coal pyrolysis to produce acetylene in thermal plasma reactors. A mercury-free process to synthesize VCM is also being explored, and is expected to be commercialized within five to ten years. Chinese professors have proposed a new chemical engineering paradigm, defining it as the transfer and transformation of materials, energy, and information, a definition that integrates the three key elements of any chemical process and, by extension, of the chemical engineering discipline.

Abstract:The historical development of chemical reaction engineering and its related milestone contribution in industry is reviewed. The new paradigm of "transfer and transformation of materials, energy and information" is proposed as the extension of the chemical engineering discipline. Multi-scale methodology is acknowledged as the key to exploring the complex problems in reaction engineering. Sophisticated computational techniques promote the rapid development of reaction engineering theory. The frontier areas in reaction engineering are pointed out from the viewpoint of interdisciplinary research and development. The authors anticipate that the industrial development of coal chemical and natural gas(shale gas)conversion would bring new opportunities for Chinese chemical engineers to become the international leaders in relevant areas, which is also the challenge for chemical reaction engineering in the future. © All Rights Reserved.

Abstract:Materials-oriented chemical engineering involves the intersection of materials science and chemical engineering. Development of materials-oriented chemical engineering not only contributes to material research and industrialization techniques but also opens new avenues for chemical engineering science. This review details the major achievements of materials-oriented chemical engineering fields in China, including preparation strategies for advanced materials based on the principles of chemical engineering as well as innovative separation and reaction techniques determined by new materials. Representative industrial applications are also illustrated, highlighting recent advances in the field of materials-oriented chemical engineering technologies. In addition, we also look at the ongoing trends in materials-oriented chemical engineering in China.

Abstract:A comprehensive bibliometric analysis of Chemical Engineering area has been carried out through the analysis of the scientific production covered in Web of Science during the period 2000-2011. Three complementary studies have been carried out. Part 1 analyzes total scientific production in the area. An important displacement of the scientific production to the Far East has occurred, mainly by the increase in publications from China (the world most productive country since 2008) but also from countries such as India and Iran. Although the share of publications from Europe, and especially from North America, have been decreased significantly, United States is still the country with the highest number of articles among the 1,000 most cited (31.5%), followed by Germany (8.4%) and China (7.5%). Switzerland, Italy, Netherlands, Singapore and Spain outstands as the countries with the highest number of cites per article and year and average impact factors of their publications. The international collaboration in the area is considerably high, especially within European countries (>40% publications are in international collaboration). The scientific production of the area is concentrated in a few journals (top 10 journals publishing around 30% publications and top 25 journals, around 50%) and publishers (Elsevier, Wiley-Blackwell, Taylor & Francis and the American Chemical Society). The countries with the highest number of institutions among the top 100 most productive are China and United States (12 each), followed by France (9), Japan (7) and United Kingdom (7). The top five institutions were from France, China, India, United States and Russia.
