Abstract:An Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) is a multi-input and multi-output (MIMO) multivariable controller and dynamic interactions are found among its multiple control functions. Focus of study in this paper is to investigate two cases of UPFC control interactions: (1) interactions caused by impropriate setting of UPFC controller's parameters; (2) interactions irrelevant with setting of UPFC controller's parameters, the case of inherent interactions of UPFC control. The work presented in this paper also reveals that with variations of power system and UPFC operating conditions, controllable parameter region of UPFC controllers moves in its parameter space. At two different operating conditions, there could be no union of the corresponding controllable parameter regions. Hence in this paper, a novel variable-parameter control for UPFC based on Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is proposed, in conjunction with a decoupling design of multi-variable UPFC control that is also based on an ANN decoupling control design. © 2005 IEEE.

Abstract:In the Software-defined networking（SDN）,when multiple control domains are used in control services,the transient state problem can occur causing the service flow interruption when border switches are updated asynchronously. We analyze the uniqueness of this problem for SDN, and propose a light-weight protocol for safe reconfiguration of the border switches in order to improve the availability of the services running in SDN. Our solution is designed as a generic supervision layer added in the control plane to support different types of services. To demonstrate the benefits, we implement a prototype of Informationcentric networks（ICN） with the protocol, and conduct experiments using Planet Lab. The results show the ICN service can continuously serve high volume requests for contents despite the congestions built by the heavy background traffic. The performance gains in terms of the mean and standard deviation of the content retrieve delay are40.5% and 21.56%.
Achieving Consistence for Cross-Domain WAN Control in Software-Defined Networks

Abstract:When applying Software-Defined Networks (SDN) to WANs, the SDN flexibility enables the cross-domain control to achieve a better control scalability. However, the control consistence is required by all the cross-domain services, to ensure the data plane configured in consensus for different domains. Such consistence process is complicated by potential failure and errors of WANs. In this paper, we propose. a consistence layer to actively and passively snapshot the cross-domain control states, to reduce the complexities of service realizations. We implement the layer and evaluate performance in the PlanetLab testbed for the WAN emulation. The testbed conditions are extremely enlarged comparing to the real network. The results show its scalability, reliability and responsiveness in dealing with the control dynamics. In the normalized results, the active and passive snapshots are executed with the mean times of 1.873s and 105ms in 135 controllers, indicating its readiness to be used in the real network.

Abstract:Firstly，the concept of SDN applications was proposed from the perspective of users payment for allocating network resources.Secondly，with the comparison between traditional desktop application programming and network programming，the advantage of SDN programming was described.Thirdly，the concept of software defined price （SDP）was introduced.Based on the characteristics of SDN applications，the framework of SDP-based SDN application so as to apply to the OpenDaylight open source project was designed.Finally，an implementation of creating a virtual tenant network based on SDP was showed.The results of experiment present that the users can choose their desired virtual tenant according to the mechanism of SDP.

Abstract:Through summarizing the general features of reconfigurable architectures,a reconfigurable architecture model,e.g.hierarchical-parameterized model,was presented in order to make the algorithm mapping and design space exploration method independent on any concrete reconfigurable architecture.This generalpurpose and hierarchical model consists of 4 parts.From top to bottom they are top structure,block structure,element structure and functional structure,where each part represents a structure level.With the corresponding parameters set into the description items,this model can describe the hierarchical architecture of target system,which is crucial to performance.The proposed parameterized model was applied to two domain representative components,in which one is dynamic system and the other is static one.The results showed that both these two cases can be described with this four-level model from top to down,which shows the good extensibility and universality of this modeling method.

Abstract:Programming a network for innovative services or for function improvements has never been easier using Software-Defined Networking (SDN). However, the programming tasks can also be significantly complicated by the asynchrony of data plane states and complexities of service control states. In order to reduce the complexity for programming a network service in Distributed Control Plane of SDN, we propose a proGRAmming Control (GRACE) layer as a generic solution, which provides two key features, namely, reconfigurability and reusability. Their implementations deal with aforementioned challenges, thus to achieve the consistency of the data plane states and the reusability of the service control states at the distributed controllers. This paper introduces the reconfigurability and reusability with their design goals and their impact on the programmability of DCP. We further use two popular network services, ICN (Information-Centric Networking) and CDN (Content Distribution Networks) to illustrate these concepts. NS-3 simulations and PlanetLab emulations are conducted to show the advantage of using the GRACE layer for ICN and CDN. Results show that the ICN Interest delay is reduced by 19.6% and CDN request delay is reduced by 81% in extremely harsh network conditions.

Abstract:In the smart building control industry, creating a platform to integrate different communication protocols and ease the interaction between users and devices is becoming increasingly important. BATMP is a platform designed to achieve this goal. In this paper, the authors describe a novel mechanism for information exchange, which introduces a new concept, Parameter, and uses it as the common object among all the BATMP components: Gateway Manager, Technology Manager, Application Manager, Model Manager and Data Warehouse. Parameter is an object which represents a physical magnitude and contains the information about its presentation, available actions, access type, etc. Each component of BATMP has a copy of the parameters. In the Technology Manager, three drivers for different communication protocols, KNX, CoAP and Modbus, are implemented to convert devices into parameters. In the Gateway Manager, users can control the parameters directly or by defining a scenario. In the Application Manager, the applications can subscribe to parameters and decide the values of parameters by negotiating. Finally, a Negotiator is implemented in the Model Manager to notify other components about the changes taking place in any component. By applying this mechanism, BATMP ensures the simultaneous and concurrent communication among users, applications and devices.
A Reconfigurable Architecture For Implementation Of Network Traffic Control Function

Abstract:Traffic control computation in high speed routers and switches is usually implemented with ad hoc hardware which is not reusable. This paper presents a reconfigurable architecture for network traffic control computations, based on an Augmented Finite State Machine (AFSM) controller, and the architecture is reconfigurable. The implementation of new traffic control features is realized in software, thus relieves the burden on hardware designers. Additionally, several traffic control algorithms in this paper are realized with the architecture to prove its hardware circuit high-speeded, reliable and stable. At last, with the electronic design automation tools (EDA), the frequency of the hardware circuit is up to 260MHz.

Abstract:As the next generation network architecture, software-defined networking (SDN) has exciting application prospects. Its core idea is to separate the forwarding layer and control layer of network system, where network operators can program packet forwarding behavior to significantly improve the innovation capability of network applications. Traffic engineering (TE) is an important network application, which studies measurement and management of network traffic, and designs reasonable routing mechanisms to guide network traffic to improve utilization of network resources, and better meet requirements of the network quality of service (QoS). Compared with the traditional networks, the SDN has many advantages to support TE due to its distinguish characteristics, such as isolation of control and forwarding, global centralized control, and programmability of network behavior. This paper focuses on the traffic engineering technology based on the SDN. First, we propose a reference framework for TE in the SDN, which consists of two parts, traffic measurement and traffic management. Traffic measurement is responsible for monitoring and analyzing real-time network traffic, as a prerequisite for traffic management. In the proposed framework, technologies related to traffic measurement include network parameters measurement, a general measurement framework, and traffic analysis and prediction; technologies related to traffic management include traffic load balancing, QoS-guarantee scheduling, energy-saving scheduling, and traffic management for the hybrid IP/SDN. Current existing technologies are discussed in detail, and our insights into future development of TE in the SDN are offered.

A Programmable Network Management Architecture for Address Driven Network

Abstract:The operation and management of network is facing increasing complexities brought by the evolution of network protocols and the demands of rapid service delivery. In this paper, we propose a programmable network management architecture, which manages network based on NETCONF protocol and provides REST APIs to upper layer so that further programming can be done based on the APIs to implement flexible management. Functions of devices can be modeled based on YANG language, and the models can be translated into REST APIs. We apply it to the management of ADN (Address Driven Network), an innovative network architecture proposed by Tsinghua University to inhibit IP spoofing, improve network security and provide high service quality. We model the functions of ADN based on YANG language, and implement the network management functions based on the REST APIs. We deploy and evaluate it in a laboratory environment. Test result shows that the programmable network management architecture is flexible to implement management for new network services.

Abstract:In recent years, various types of heterogeneous networks develop rapidly. The integration of multi-type networks have great values in the fields of military and civil applications. The challenges of integrating multiple networks covers the heterogeneity of multiple aspects, e.g., the architectures, protocols, and switching mechanisms. The existing interconnection technologies of heterogeneous networks mainly include traditional static protocol gateways, traditional software-defined network (SDN) gateways, and improved SDN gateways. However, traditional static protocol gateways need to be customed in advance according to specific scenarios, which leads to the lack of flexibility. Traditional SDN gateways are often used for connecting homogeneous networks. The existing improved SDN gateways often neglect the efficiency and cost of integrating heterogeneous networks. In our work, we propose a software-defined architecture for integrating heterogeneous space and ground networks (SD-SGN). First, we propose an integrated architecture that utilizes SDN gateways and southbound interfaces to shield subnets' heterogeneity ranging from the physical layer to the network layer. Second, we use the multi-class multi-level flow tables to provide a flexible data plane. Third, we offer an efficient control plane based on the subnet abstraction and global collaborative optimization. Fourth, we give a further discussion on customizing a complete network service based on the proposed SDN architecture. Last, extensive simulations demonstrate that this SDN architecture is effective and performs well in terms of costs, efficiency, and performance.

Abstract:Software defined network (SDN) is a newly emerging network architecture with the core concept of separating the control plane and data plane. Centralized controller is introduced to manage and configure network equipments to realize flexible control of network traffic and provide a good platform for application-oriented network innovation. It thus be able to improve network resource utilization, simplify network management, reduce operating cost, and promote innovation and evolution. Routing is always a major concern in network management. When SDN devices (e.g., OpenFlow switches) are introduced, routing becomes different. The flow table is usually implemented in expensive and power-hungry Ternary Content Addressable Memory (TCAM), which is thus capacity-limited. How to optimize the network performance in the consideration of limited TCAM capacity is therefore significant. For example, multi-path routing (MPR) has been widely regarded as a promising method to promote the network performance. But MPR is at the expense of additional forwarding rule, imposing burden on the limited flow table. On the other hand, a logical centralized programmable controller manages the whole SDN by installing rules onto switches. It is widely regarded that one controller is restricted on both performance and scalability. To address these limitations, pioneering researchers advocate deploying multiple controllers in SDNs where each controller is in charge of a set of switches. This raises the switch-controller association problem on a switch shall be managed by which controller. In this chapter, we first investigate how to schedule MPR with joint consideration of forwarding rule placement. Then, we study a minimum cost switch-controller association (MC-SCA) problem on how to minimize the number of controllers needed in an SDN while guaranteeing the flow setup time.

Abstract:To ensure an efficient data transport, meeting the requirements requested by today's transport services, the unification of control and management of microwave and millimeter wave radio link interfaces is a precondition for seamless multilayer networking and automated network wide provisioning and operation. This document describes the required characteristics and use cases for control and management of radio link interface parameters using a YANG Data Model. It focuses on the benefits of a standardized management model that is aligned with how other packet technology interfaces in a microwave/millimeter wave node are modeled, the need to support core parameters and at the same time allow for optional product/feature specific parameters supporting new, unique innovative features until they have become mature enough to be included in the standardized model. The purpose is to create a framework for identification of the necessary information elements and definition of a YANG Data Model for control and management of the radio link interfaces in a microwave/millimeter wave node.

Abstract:Software-Defined Networking proposes to fundamentally change the current practice of network control. The two basic ideas are Centralized State Control and Uniform Device Abstraction, which support the Software-Defined promise. SDN has made significant progress. The opportunities of SDN in carrier access networks have been largely ignored by both industry and academia. In access networks, Quality-of-Service (QoS) oriented bandwidth management is more critical; the flexible QoS provisioning could be the most important opportunity for SDN. In this position paper, the authors show that the unique characteristics of access networks pose significant challenges to the two basic ideas. Contrary to the common agreement on “match-action” abstraction, the authors argue that the object-oriented abstraction might be a better choice for access networks to make a better software-defined implementation.
SDPA: Enhancing Stateful Forwarding for Software-Defined Networking

Abstract:As the prevailing technique of Software-Defined Networking (SDN), OpenFlow introduces significant programmability, granularity and flexibility for many network applications to effectively manage and process network flows. However, OpenFlow only provides a simple "match-action" paradigm and lacks the function of stateful forwarding for SDN data plane, which limits it to support advanced network applications. Heavily relying on SDN controllers for all state maintenance incurs both scalability and performance issues. In this paper, we propose a novel Stateful Data Plane Architecture (SDPA) for SDN data plane. A co-processing unit, Forwarding Processor (FP), is designed for SDN switches to manage state information through new instructions and state tables. We design and implement an extended OpenFlow protocol to implement the communication between the controller and FP. To demonstrate the practicality and feasibility of our approach, we implement both software and hardware prototypes of SDPA switches, and develop a sample network function chain with stateful firewall, DNS reflection attack defense and NAT applications in one SDPA-based switch. Experimental results show that the SDPA architecture can effectively improve the forwarding efficiency with manageable processing overhead for those applications that need stateful forwarding in SDN-based networks.
