Abstract:Multipath TCP (MPTCP) is considered as a promising protocol that enables multi-homed terminals with multiple interfaces, to transmit data concurrently through all the available paths in heterogeneous wireless networks. However, the dissimilar characteristics among different paths may cause the out-of-order problem at the receiver with limited receiving buffer, which will significantly degrade the overall throughput. Many packet scheduling schemes for MPTCP have been proposed to keep data in-order delivery, but most of them only consider the path latency, ignoring the bandwidth and packet loss rate. In this paper, we propose a new dynamic packet scheduling method for MPTCP. We first use a low-complexity way to estimate the packets sent on other paths concurrently, taking both the bandwidth and packet loss rate into consideration, then modify the scheduling value with the feedback information. Simulation results show that our method can enhance the overall throughput and reduce the unordered packets at the receiver.
XRMCCP: a XCP framework based reliable multicast transport protocol

Abstract:This paper introduces a XCP framework based reliable multicast transport protocol XRMCCP (XCP framework based Reliable Multicast Congestion controlled protocol) that has been designed to be simple, scalable and reliable for high bandwidth-delay product (BDP) networks. We observe that TCP Friendly Throughput Equation (TFTE), which many current multicast transport protocols use to estimate available rates of multicast sessions, has limits of performance in high BDP networks. XRMCCP generalizes XCP framework to support one-to-many transport congestion control. The scalability issue is addressed with an exponential timers scheme that is also used to estimate the number of receivers involved in the communication. The paper presents a number of simulation results on its performance. Besides, some design choices are evaluated.

Abstract:Multipath TCP (MPTCP) proxy is a way to provide multipath transmissions for current Internet hosts. However, previous works on MPTCP mainly focus on the scenario where one end of the connection is MPTCP-capable, which is not the case in current networks. In this article, we propose a transparent MPTCP (T-MPTCP) transmission scheme to achieve MPTCP transmission for TCP hosts at both ends. Specifically, T-MPTCP contains two components in the network: an aggregation box at the user side acting as an implicit proxy, and an aggregation server at the server side acting as an explicit proxy. The aggregation server can be deployed in different places of the network for optimized performance, and we thus propose a Proxy Location Selected (PLS) algorithm to determine the best aggregation server placement. To validate our design, T-MPTCP is deployed in a real network for experiments, whose results exhibit higher network throughput under T-MPTCP and further improvement with the PLS algorithm.

Abstract:This paper models a theoretical framework of energy efficiency concurrent multipath transfer based on MPTCP. An optimal energy efficient splitting way was proposed. By exploring the theoretical relationship between transmission rate and energy efficiency, a multi-network concurrent multipath transmission energy efficiency optimization model is developed. For downlink and concurrent transmission scenarios in heterogeneous wireless networks, the relationship between different network channel states, energy consumption and transmission rate is studied. In order to ensure that the data leave the send queue within a limited time, the Lyapunov optimization method is used in this paper, and then obtained an optimal splitting strategy.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a receiver energy efficient congestion control algorithm based on multipath transmission control protocol (MPTCP) to enable the battery powered mobile devices receive more data than MPTCP with the same energy consumption. First, based on the receiver energy consumption model of wireless interface, a constrained optimization problem to maximize energy efficiency is formed. With genetic algorithm, a rate distribution vector is obtained as a near-optimal solution. Second, we adjust the congestion windows based on the acquired vector to schedule packets over each path directly. Jointly considering energy efficiency, round trip time and path loss rate, a novel congestion control algorithm is proposed to adjust the increment of congestion window when an acknowledgement is received in the congestion avoidance phase. The energy efficiency term is obtained by extending the energy efficient rate distribution vector into the window-based congestion control algorithm via fluid model. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm shifts part of traffic from the higher energy consumption paths to the lower ones. It improves throughput greatly and achieves higher energy efficiency, almost twice the size of MPTCP.

Abstract:A basic need in datacenter networks is to provide high throughput for large flows such as the massive shuffle traffic flows in a MapReduce application. Multipath TCP (MPTCP) has been investigated as an effective approach toward this goal, by spreading one TCP flow onto multiple paths. However, the current MPTCP implementation has two major limitations: (1) a fixed number of subflows are used without reacting to the actual traffic condition; (2) the routing of subflows of a multipath TCP connection relies heavily on the ECMP-based random hashing. The former may lead to a waste of both the server and network resources, while the latter can cause throughput degradation when multiple subflows collide on the same path. This paper proposes a responsive MPTCP system to resolve the two limitations simultaneously. Our system employs a centralized controller for intelligent subflow route calculation and a monitor running on each server for actively adjusting the number of subflows. Working in synergy, the two modules enable MPTCP flows to respond to the traffic conditions and pursue high throughput on the fly, at very low computation and messaging overhead. NS3-based experiments show that our system achieves satisfactory throughput with less resource overhead, or better throughput at similar amounts of overhead, as compared to common alternatives.

Abstract:Mobile devices are emerging with multiple interfaces with diverse access technologies. Simultaneously use multiple interfaces can bring lots of benefits to users. However, current TCP fails to support to simultaneously use multiple interfaces. Thus Multi-Path TCP is proposed to overcome the limitation. But MPTCP itself cannot provide mobility support, which may impose mobility restriction on mobile devices. We thus propose a mobility management scheme inside MPTCP protocol. We first propose several requirements for Multi-Path TCP mobility management and then present our solution. Our solution is based on the concept of ID/Locator separation. We use a permanent address and several temporary addresses to separate host identity and locations. By the cooperation of dynamic DNS and MPTCP, our solution has a good support in MPTCP mobility. Finally, we implement a real-world system of MPTCP with mobility support as a proof of feasibility of our approach.

Abstract:<p>Multipath data transmission techniques have been proposed to aggregate the resource of multiple heterogeneous access networks to enhance the robustness and throughput of multi-homed mobile devices.The Multipath TCP (MPTCP) protocol has been standardized by the IETF as an extension of conventional TCP, which enables establishing several subflows over multiple interfaces for simultaneous data transmission. However, current implementation of MPTCP only supports static subflow management strategies, which cannot adapt to the changing to network environment. In this paper, we focus on the issues of dynamic subflow management for MPTCP. We present theoretical analysis to the overall throughput of establishing multiple subflows with MPTCP, based on which we propose an adaptive subflow allocation algorithm to determine the proper number of subflows for each network interface to optimize the performance gain. We implement the proposed algorithm, integrate it into the MPTCP Linux Kernel implementation, and evaluate its performance on a wireless network testbed. Extensive experiments show that the proposed allocation algorithm significantly outperforms the existing subflow management strategies with 57% improvement.</p>

A measurement study on multi-path TCP with multiple cellular carriers on high speed rails

Abstract:Recent advances in high speed rails (HSRs) are propelling the need for acceptable network service in high speed mobility environments. However, previous studies show that the performance of traditional single-path transmission degrades significantly during high speed mobility due to frequent handoff. Multi-path transmission with multiple carriers is a promising way to enhance the performance, because at any time, there is possibly at least one path not suffering a handoff. In this paper, for the first time, we measure multi-path TCP (MPTCP) with two cellular carriers on HSRs with a peak speed of 310km/h. We find a significant difference in handoff time between the two carriers. Moreover, we observe that MPTCP can provide much better performance than TCP in the poorer of the two paths. This indicates that MPTCP's robustness to handoff is much higher than TCP's. However, the efficiency of MPTCP is far from satisfactory. MPTCP performs worse than TCP in the better path most of the time. We find that the low efficiency can be attributed to poor adaptability to frequent handoff by MPTCP's key operations in sub-flow establishment, congestion control and scheduling. Finally, we discuss possible directions for improving MPTCP for such scenarios.

Abstract:The multi-home host will become increasingly popular within IPv6, especially in data center Fat-tree networks. MPTCP protocol is designed to transmit over multipath load, providing users with transparent multi-path utilization and high data transmission rate. As the characteristics of Many-to-one pattern and a large number of short bursts, all of flows collide on the shared link and same output port, creating an inevitable bottleneck collapse during transmission process. In order to avoid the collapse of throughput and improve the throughput of the receiving end, the MPTCP protocol in the data center network should have the characteristics of minimal packet loss and rapid convergence. In this paper, we focus on throughput collapse avoidance and design a MPTCP Transmission Control method based Queuing Cache Balance Factor called QCBF in Multi-homed FatTree topology. This method can realize the sub-flows are allocated by the size of ToRs cluster cache. We first propose a buffer pool balance factor and build a ToRs cluster cache balance queue. Then according to ToRs cluster cache allocation to calculate a sub-flow congestion window value. QCBF not only avoids the MPTCP Incast problem effectively, but also makes full use of the aggregate bandwidth. Based the software NS3, the experiment results of experiment show the QCBF transmission control method could avoid loss of packet, and achieve the load balance of MPTCP data transmission.

Abstract:Internet was originally designed for one-to-one application process communication. With the tremendous growth and popularity of Internet, a number of new Internet applications have been introduced. Many applications exist today including live media streaming and video on demand which breach the one to one communication paradigm. With the increased use of multicast applications there is greater need for making communication reliable and bandwidth efficient. A large number of applications running on the Internet today use Transmission Control Protocol (TCP). Multipath TCP (MPTCP) allows multiple communication paths to exist between communicating devices. In this paper the performance of MPTCP is evaluated in wireless multicast scenarios for the first time. We run simulations to measure parameters of throughput, latency, and jitter. We also show the effects of varying multicast group size. The results show that MPTCP provides increased bandwidth with more reliable communication compared to base TCP.

Abstract:The utilization of Multi-path TCP (MPTCP) has been demonstrated to provide superior transport-layer support for data center networks (DCNs) due to its exceptional resource utilization and load-balancing capabilities. However, the substantial path diversity can make it challenging to utilize network resources to their full potential in DCNs. This paper focuses on studying the resource allocation issue of MPTCP from a resource optimization perspective. Based on theoretical analysis, we propose FMPTCP, which uses a feedback-based congestion control algorithm (FCC) and a feedback-based multi-path routing algorithm (FMP) to jointly achieve high bandwidth utilization and low round-trip time (RTT) in DCNs. The FCC algorithm utilizes probabilistic explicit congestion notification (ECN) to provide feedback on path congestion degree, and uses a gradient descent method to adjust the congestion window for optimal resource utilization and load balancing under a fixed routing topology. On the other hand, the FMP algorithm employs a hop-by-hop feedback mechanism to notify in-network congestion and path delay information, allowing for transparent multi-path routing for MPTCP flows. Our extensive simulations demonstrate that FMPTCP enables effective network resource utilization, which not only enhances overall throughput but also reduces transmission latency for DCNs.

Abstract:Multipath TCP protocol (MPTCP) is a complicated transport layer protocol that transfers data by multiple paths simultaneously. It can improve end to end transmission throughput and increase network utilization. However, we find there are still deficiencies in the congestion control algorithm and throughput model of MPTCP, so we investigate these deficiencies in this study. Firstly, we design a novel congestion control algorithm, Path Associativity Congestion Control (PACC), which further enhances the throughput of MPTCP. PACC is based on fairness, the definition of which is more reasonable. Secondly, we find the adaptation problem of MPTCP that affects its performance, and propose a MPTCP throughput model, which can predict the throughput in real network environment. Finally, by analyzing the main factors causing the adaptation problem based on the throughput model, we design a dynamic reservation algorithm to improve the tra_c distribution and eliminate that issue. Extensive ns-2 simulation study has been performed to validate our design and algorithms.

Abstract:The core idea of the Multi-Path Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) is to utilize multiple network connections by distributing payload data transmission among several sub-flows. Then, multiple paths in the underlying networks can be used to maximize the overall connection throughput. However, the concurrent transmission on only a subset of all possible sub-flows’ aggregation can improve network performance, because of performance differences between the subflow. In this paper, we propose a new FullMesh algorithm based on Path Characteristic and Data Characteristic (PCDC), in which a Subflow Impact Factor (IF) is used as a subflow characteristic to predict the impact of a subflow on the overall throughput. Then, different path sets are adopted for different sizes of traffic. The PCDC algorithm is evaluated in the NORNET CORE testbed, comparing it to the FullMesh algorithm. Our research results show that the PCDC algorithm can improve the network throughput and reduce the overall completion time of small data streams. 1 2 3

Abstract:Load balancing in datacenter networks (DCNs) is an important and challenging task for datacenter managers. A number of sophisticated technologies have been proposed to improve load balancing performance in a complicated circumstance, i.e., with various traffic characteristics. Many approaches need a high cost to implement, such as changing switch hardware. The efficiency problem has not been well addressed. MPTCP was proposed as a low-cost approach to improve data transmission in DCNs, which uses subflows to balance workloads across multiple paths. However, current MPTCP is not satisfying, especially when there are rack-local flows or many-to-one short flows. In this article, we propose DCMPTCP to improve the efficacy of MPTCP. We gradually develop three mechanisms. First, DCMPTCP identifies rack-local traffic and eliminates unnecessary subflows to reduce the overhead. Second, DCMPTCP estimates flow length and establishes subflows in a smarter way. Third, DCMPTCP strengthens explicit congestion notification to improve the congestion control performance on inter-rack many-to-one short flows. We have implemented DCMPTCP in both the Linux kernel and ns-3 simulator. Our comprehensive testbed experiments and simulations show that DCMPTCP outperforms MPTCP in both 1 Gbps testbed, and 10 Gbps large-scale simulation network.

Abstract:Multipath TCP (MPTCP) can significantly improve the performance of bulk data transfer in Data Center Networks (DCNs). To achieve this, an MPTCP flow wants each of its subflows to run on a different under-utilized path. Existing routing schemes fail to meet this requirement. we propose to dynamically construct disjoint paths for each MPTCP flow so as to fully utilize the path diversity of DCNs to achieve high data transfer performance. The simulations show that, compared to current practice, our scheme can increase goodputs by more than 60%.

Abstract:Multi-Path Transmission Control Protocol (MPTCP) is emerging as a dominant paradigm that enables users to utilize multiple Network Interface Controllers (NICs) simultaneously. Due to the complexity of its protocol design, the steady-state performance of MPTCP still remains largely unclear through model analysis. This introduces severe challenges to quantitatively study the efficiency, fairness and stability of existing MPTCP implementations. In this paper, we for the first time investigate the modeling of coupled congestion control and flow control algorithms in MPTCP. By proposing a closed-form throughput model, we reveal the relationship between MPTCP throughput and subflow characters, such as Round Trip Time (RTT), packet loss rate and receive buffer size. The extensive NS2-based evaluation indicates that the proposed model can be applied to understand the throughput of MPTCP in various situations. In particular, when MPTCP subflows have similar RTTs, the average Error Rate (ER) of the proposed model is less than 8%. Even in the situation where huge RTT difference exists between subflows, the model can still behave well with average ER less than 10%.
